“Potter” Stars Steal the Show at WhatsOnStage Awards
Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint were victorious at the WhatsOnStage Awards this Sunday evening, winning in both their respective categories.
Hosted at the Prince of Wales Theatre, currently home to The Book of Mormon, the WhatsOnStage Awards celebrate the best of West End and British theater. The awards, voted for by the audiences, are an annual affair, attended by the stars and public alike, and were once again hosted by comedians Rufus Hound and Mel Giedroyc.
Rupert walked away with the award for Best Newcomer, after receiving a whopping 50.3% of the votes for his role in the star-studded revival of Jez Butterworth’s Mojo. Daniel Radcliffe, meanwhile, secured 30.7% of the votes for Best Actor in a Play for his role in The Cripple of Inishmaan, beating the likes of Ben Whishaw and James McAvoy.
The two actors were reunited backstage at the awards, going in for hug, before posing for a string of photographs. As they parted for their individual interviews, they were heard arranging to catch up after the show.
Speaking of his role in The Cripple of Inishmaan, Radcliffe commented that it was a “truly joyous experience” and is looking forward to reprising the role when the production opens on Broadway this April. He also went on to talk of his pride in Rupert’s win and how he knew the latter would enjoy doing theater since they had always cherished the same thing on Potter – the community created when making a film that is also present when working in theater. Although Potter-related questions were strictly limited at the event, Radcliffe confirmed that he “knows nothing” about the upcoming Harry Potter stage play, which, incidentally, is to be produced by the same company behind Mojo.
