“Harry Potter” items to feature in “The Fault in Our Stars” movie
In some exciting fandom crossover news, production designer Molly Hughes has revealed that some items from the Potter films will be seen in the upcoming The Fault in Our Stars movie.
Hughes, who worked as a set designer on both book-to-screen adaptations, talks about the fandoms being linked:
It’s interesting because I worked on the Harry Potter movies, so it’s like the same fans grown up, kind of. So I was sort of fascinated by that and the absolute love of this book.
Working on the Potter films, Hughes became close friends with set decorator Stephenie McMillan, who sadly passed away while Hughes was working on The Fault in Our Stars. The character of Hazel is revealed to be a Potter fan in the novel, so it seemed only natural to place some Potter items in her bedroom. It was when the department went to dress the items, they decided to do it in honor of McMillan. She explains,
We put a few things for [McMillan] in the room. Hermione’s Time-Turner is hanging on the bedpost, and there’s a Triwizard Cup by the shelf, and she has all the Harry Potter books.
Designers Eduardo Lima and Miraphora Mina, who designed props for the Potter films, also helped to design the book cover for Hazel’s most important (fictional) book: An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten. Hughes said,
It felt like they could tap into a kind of classic look. We also felt it would be nice for the fans of the book to know that the Harry Potter graphic artists designed this book too.
While Warner Bros. did not produce the big screen adaptation of John Green’s bestselling novel, they kindly allowed the movie to use Potter items on the sets. Hughes said of the collaboration,
Even the publicity people over there are obsessed with this book, so they were so happy to help and help me.
A truly touching story and such a lovely way to pay tribute to her late friend. The Fault in Our Stars hits theaters Friday, June 6. What do you think about this story? Let us know in the comments.
