UPDATED: Lumos Launches Indiegogo Campaign, Includes “Potter”-Related Perks
Lumos, the charity founded by J.K. Rowling, recently released a video highlighting the life of many European children in orphanages and institutions. The feature, called “Behind the Walls,” was a chilling reminder of the way that thousands of children are forced to live. Now, Lumos has launched an Indiegogo campaign in order to raise money to help these children.
This specific campaign is looking to help send children in Moldova to school.
Since 2006, we have been working in Moldova, the poorest country in Europe. We have been part of establishing an inclusive education system; this has meant that hundreds of children have been able to return home from institutions. But special care and attention is needed for the children with the most severe disabilities, to ensure that they receive an education – a good education!
The money raised by the Indiegogo campaign will help Lumos to build a special education unit in Ialoveni, Moldova.
The Unit will be attached to the local mainstream school and will enable children with severe and complex physical and learning disabilities to attend the school for the first time in their lives. They will be educated alongside all the other children and will have the opportunity to get to know them and play with them.
The Special Education Unit will be adapted for children with special needs.
It will […] have a huge impact [not only] on the children but also on their families and communities as children will be able to receive an education whilst living at home with their families and being part of their local communities. Parents will receive support to send their child to school and will no longer have to feel that sending their child to an institution is the only way.
More information about the Special Education Unit can be found here. Since the campaign was launched, Lumos has already raised 14% of its goal but needs your help to raise the full amount and fund this project.
As one of the perks for those donating to the cause, Lumos is offering two passes to MuggleNet Live! 2015: Expo Patronum. Also available are three signed copies of Warwick Davis‘s autobiography, although these have since sold out. Davis played Professor Flitwick and Griphook in the Harry Potter films and will be attending MuggleNet Live! next year.
You can find out more information about the campaign, how to donate, and what difference your donation will make on the Indiegogo page.
Visit the charity’s official site here. The campaign will run until December 20.
