What Is the Significance of Sleekeazy’s?
If you haven’t heard already, Pottermore released new information regarding Harry Potter’s family. One of the most interesting facts was that Fleamont Potter, Harry’s grandfather, invented Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion. The potion was so effective, it could tame even Hermione’s famously exuberant hair.
Hermione’s hair was bushy again; she confessed to Harry that she had used liberal amounts of Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion on it for the ball” – Goblet of Fire
A wonderful insight is embedded in this new information: the fact that after generations of trying to deal with unruly Potter hair, Fleamont had probably had enough.
It also lends a little more significance to this:
Lily Evans: “You’re as bad as he is […]”
James: “What! I’d NEVER call you a — you-know-what!”
Lily Evans: “Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you’ve just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid Snitch, walking down corridors and hexing anyone who annoys you just because you can — I’m surprised your broomstick can get off the ground with that fat head on it. You make me SICK.” – Order of the Phoenix
James was, as we know, a bit of a rebel and a prankster. He probably took great pleasure in ruffling his hair, making it as messy as possible, without his parents around to slather a load of Sleekeazy’s on it.
This may also have factored into Gilderoy Lockhart’s determination to befriend/leech off Harry Potter – as Lockhart’s secret ambition was
to rid the world if evil and market my own range of hair-care potions” – Chamber of Secrets
