J.K. Rowling Makes Surprise Appearance at Scottish Book Club Gathering
The members of Orkney Library’s Saturday Slaughters Book Club must have downed a bottle of Felix Felicis each because they got the surprise of a lifetime this past Saturday – J.K. Rowling herself appearing at their discussion of The Cuckoo’s Calling!
The magic all began when the library posted a tweet advertising their 2:30 meeting on Friday:
Join us for Saturday Slaughters to discuss The Cuckoo’s Calling by @RGalbraith 2.30pm Saturday 5 March pic.twitter.com/7Pep6M51aA

The author herself, an active Twitter user, saw their post and soon engaged in conversation with the library’s staff, raising the book club’s hopes that Queen Rowling might really appear.
@jk_rowling @RGalbraith It certainly will be. If you set off for Scrabster now you should still catch the ferry…

@OrkneyLibrary @RGalbraith No wait… you want Robert, not me. He can drive (I can’t).

@OrkneyLibrary @RGalbraith What kind of cake?
— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) March 4, 2016
@OrkneyLibrary @RGalbraith Robert (and Strike) are both partial to fruitcake. Something with a bit of heft to it. I like lemon drizzle cake.

@OrkneyLibrary @RGalbraith Tea the colour of creosote, just the way Strike likes it.

@jk_rowling @RGalbraith Quite right too. Weak tea is the work of the devil.

And we have the lemon cake on standby just in case @jk_rowling turns up #shopbought #weapologise pic.twitter.com/AmADuuEE42

That thing where you realise you made @jk_rowling tea in the worst mug in history. Hope it tasted alright. pic.twitter.com/SjTziet7hs

If you didn’t already have enough reasons to join a book club, does the fact that J.K. Rowling herself might show up convince you? (Especially if your book club is in Scotland.) (And if you read only books that J.K. Rowling has written.) Of course, fans all of the world are turning green with envy at the luck of the Saturday Slaughters readers, but isn’t it awesome that our favorite author is chill enough to attend an old-fashioned Muggle book club? Plus, supporting library communities is a magic all its own!
