What Makes a Hero?
What makes a hero?
A hero is not always a fighter. There is much more to heroism than daring acts of bravery or enormous feats of strength. Many heroes come in small packages, which is the case with Dobby the free elf.
Dobby was a gentle creature whose primary concern was the well-being of his friends. He went out of his way on numerous occasions to defend Harry Potter’s life from what he believed to be mortal peril.
But as I said, Dobby was more than his selfless actions. He was a generous soul as well. After spending all of his hard-earned wages for the yarn to knit a pair of socks for Harry’s Christmas present, he was overwhelmed to receive any gifts himself.
Sir is very kind!” he squeaked, his eyes brimming with tears again, bowing deeply to Ron. “Dobby knew sir must be a great wizard, for he is Harry Potter’s greatest friend, but Dobby did not know that he was also as generous of spirit, as noble, as selfless -”
“They’re only socks,” said Ron.
Dobby proved himself to be a wonderful role model for other house-elves in their work for fair wages. He was delighted to work in the Hogwarts kitchens and remain close to his friends.
Dobby beamed very brightly, and happy tears welled in his eyes again.
‘And Professor Dumbledore says he will pay Dobby, sir, if Dobby wants paying! And so Dobby is a free elf, sir, and Dobby gets a Galleon a week and one day off a month!’
Dobby’s heart was always in the right place. While his actions may have been unorthodox at times, his intentions were always pure. From his rogue warning Bludger in Harry’s second year, to his defiance of Bellatrix Lestrange, Dobby was never cruel or excessively violent (on purpose).
Dobby’s loyalty was unmatched. He defended Harry against the Malfoys and Bellatrix and on occasion even spoke up for him to Kreacher. He aided Harry and his friends in their escape from Malfoy Manor, even though the quest was wrought with peril.
Dobby was a crucial part in Harry Potter’s defeat of Lord Voldemort. Without his loyalty, bravery, and selflessness, Harry would have never been successful. Dobby was unfailingly loyal and kind to Harry in all that he did and ultimately sacrificed his life to save Harry’s. Even in death, Dobby was simply happy to be with his friend and was completely unconcerned with himself.
Heroes come in many shapes and sizes. Some are frontrunners like Harry, who inspire and lead a heroic effort. Other heroes are like Dobby, kind and gentle souls who give up everything they have to support their heroes and strive to make the world a better place for all.
Wands up in remembrance of this tiny hero who made a huge impact. We remember you today and always, Dobby the free elf.
