Ten Magical Movie Moments
The films, especially the magical moments, are visually stunning. The filmmakers brought the extraordinary Harry Potter world to life and on our screens. Below are my top ten magical movie moments.
- Protecting Hogwarts
This fearful scene, heightened by Alexandre Desplat’s fantastically rhythmic music, was beautifully done. David Yates’s direction made this a visually exciting scene to watch.
- Voldemort vs. Dumbledore
The masterful display of power between two great wizards created this epic scene. This intense scene showed the viewers why both these men were feared and respected in the wizarding world.
- Diagon Alley
While not the most visually dynamic or exciting scene, this vibrant moment gives us our first real insight into the magical world, and just like Harry, we view it with a sense of wonder.
- DA practice
Seeing Harry going from a student to a teacher, preparing his peers against a common enemy was particularly touching. In addition, the effects used to create the Patronuses were spectacular.
- Harry’s Patronus
This is interesting because we saw Harry’s Patronus twice, once as him casting it and the other as him seeing it. Initially, Harry believes his dad cast the Patronus, but seeing both Sirius and himself helpless spurs him into action, creating a triumphant and jubilant moment.
- Fred and George’s dramatic exit
Not only was it satisfying to see Umbridge get some punishment, but it’s also a visually exciting and colorful scene.
- Priori Incantem
After four films, we finally see what made Voldemort so terrifying. The ending of Goblet of Fire marked a turning point in the series, and this scene demonstrated that. Cedric’s death and the tense duel were gripping to watch. In addition, the shadows of the Potters and Cedric Diggory coming to Harry’s aid were brilliant but heartbreaking.
- Hermione wiping her parents’ memories
This scene is one of my favorite modifications. Seeing Hermione wiping any trace of her from both her parents’ minds and from the house as well was heartbreaking. This poignant scene is one of the subtler magical scenes but brilliantly done.
- Triwizard Tournament: Lake challenge
All three tasks in the Triwizard Tournament were fantastically done, but the lake task is my favorite. The filmmakers created a terrifyingly beautiful world, which is emphasized by the mermaid’s ethereal song.
- Wizard chess
This giant game of chess seemed frightening at the time but pales compared to what Harry, Ron, and Hermione go on to face. Nevertheless, the game is beautifully designed, and the tense ending illustrates the trio’s bravery and skill.
