Hagrid’s Fantastic Beast of the Month: The Thunderbird
‘Ello again!! Welcome back ter Hagrid’s Fantastic Beast of the Month! I am Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper o’ Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. Tis’ my hope that this column teaches yeh all that kritters aren’t all bad.
I went back and listened ter an older episode of SpeakBeasty and was very interested by what I heard. This segment’s Kritter is a Thunderbird! I was excited when I heard about this one because it was new ter me, too!!
This creature ‘parrently comes from Native American mythology and is common in the Midwestern, Plains, and Northwest Coastal tribes. It is rumored ter be large enough ter carry a killer whale in its talons!! Now, killer whales grow ter around 28 feet and weigh between 3,000 and 8,000 pounds. That has ter be a massive bird!!
The superstitions surrounding the Thunderbird are storm based, as its name suggests. This bird creates thunderstorms as it flies. The clouds are brought together by its wings, and the sound of thunder comes from the clapping of its wings. The lightning that spans the sky is caused by the Thunderbird blinking, while individual bolts of lightning are caused by snakes that are carried in its talons. GLOWING SNAKES THAT SHOOT LIGHTNING BOLTS!! That’s like another awesome creature right there!! One of my favorite bits ’bout this creature is that it can take a human form and walk among us! It can remove its bright feathers like a blanket, allowing it ter blend in.
‘Parently, America has a lotta kritters that can turn themselves human. I need ter take a trip there ASAP. Thanks fer readin’, and I hope yeh learned something! Remember ter check out SpeakBeasty! Don’ forget ter follow the spiders!
