“Cursed Child” Wins Best Play at Evening Standard Awards
The Evening Standard Theatre Awards took place last night in London, UK, hosted by comedian Rob Brydon. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was nominated for several awards, as were many Potter alumni.
Cursed Child walked away with the award for Best Play, given out by Dame Maggie Smith (Professor McGonagall), who of course is particularly familiar with the wizarding world. The award was accepted by director, John Tiffany, who said,
It’s a show about the peril of isolation, about unity, about family and about love.
J.K. Rowling, who was recently been in New York for the Fantastic Beasts New York premiere and Lumos screening and thus unable to attend, sent a message, which was read by Noma Dumezweni (Hermione Granger). The message praised
Tiffany and writer Jack Thorne for ‘crafting the bare bones of a story into something very special’.
