Seven Times Hermione Saved the Day
Hermione is amazing. She was an amazing role model to those who grew up reading about her lifesaving cleverness. Without her, and her vast magical knowledge, the trio would have perished early on. To celebrate Book Lover’s Day, I’ve compiled a list of Hermione’s top seven heroic moments.
1. Nicholas Flamel
Nicolas Flamel,” she whispered dramatically, “is the only known maker of the Sorcerer’s Stone” (Sorcerer’s Stone 219).
She was the one to discover who Nicholas Flamel really was. Had Hermione not found that information, they would never have figured out what was in the school.
2. Devil’s Snare
[Hermione] whipped out her wand, waved it, muttered something, and sent a jet of the same bluebell flames she had used on Snape at the plant. In a matter of seconds, the two boys felt it loosening its grip as it cringed away from the light and warmth” (Sorcerer’s Stone 278).
Without Hermione both remembering her Herbology lessons and knowing how to conjure the flame, the plant would have engulfed the trio.
3. Polyjuice Potion
This is the most complicated potion I’ve ever seen,” said Hermione as they scanned the recipe” (Chamber of Secrets 165).
Hermione successfully brewed an immensely complicated potion that allowed the trio to rule out Draco as a suspect. Plus, she was only 12 years old at the time.
4. The Basilisk
And beneath this, a single word had been written, in a hand Harry recognized as Hermione’s. Pipes” (Chamber of Secrets 290).
Not only was she the first one to figure out what the creature in the Chamber of Secrets really was, but she also managed to give that information to the boys while Petrified. Who knows how long it would have taken Harry and Ron to realize what was really happening otherwise?
5. Accio
Hermione, I need to learn how to do a Summoning Charm properly by tomorrow afternoon” (Goblet of Fire 345).
This part was completely glossed over in the film. In the books, Hermione taught Harry how to perform the Summoning Charm, which helped him in the Triwizard Tournament and several times against Voldemort.
6. Dumbledore’s Army Coins
You can do a Protean Charm?” said Terry Boot.
“Yes,” said Hermione.
“But that’s . . . that’s N.E.W.T. standard, that is” (Order of the Phoenix 398).
Hermione brilliantly came up with the idea to use coins to send secret messages between members of Dumbledore’s Army. Without her ingenious thinking, Umbridge would have found them out fairly early on.
7. Undetectable Extension Charm
Undetectable Extension Charm,” said Hermione. “Tricky, but I think I’ve done it okay; anyway, I managed to fit everything we need in here” (Deathly Hallows 162).
I would love to be able to have a bag like this. It saved the trio multiple times while they were on the run. Thanks to Hermione’s forward thinking, she was able to pack everything they needed to get away.
