Who is Callum Turner? Meet the Man Behind Theseus Scamander!
We have just over a year until we get to see the anticipated sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, but a lot of aspects of the film are still a mystery. Perhaps one of the biggest mysteries involves Newt Scamander’s war-hero older brother, Theseus Scamander. We’ve known that Theseus would be featured in the second installment of the film series for a while, and rumors swirled around about the role being cast, and yes, the rumors were true. Callum Turner is our Theseus! But who exactly is this mysterious new addition? The Hollywood Reporter helps us find out.
If you’re a fan of indie films, you may recognize him from ones such as Queen and Country or Green Room. More recently, however, Turner appears alongside the legendary “dude” himself, Jeff Bridges, in upcoming project The Only Boy Living in New York. This role did not come easy to the up-and-coming actor, however.
I was pretty scared. I didn’t understand the relationship between the son and the father. It was all completely alien to me … I was pretty scared because I’ve been making my way on smaller movies, character-driven stuff. But this one felt like a level up.
Turner certainly has come a long way from the start. The 27-year-old actor was raised by a single mother in Chelsea, UK, and acting wasn’t even on his radar growing up. Turner actually had dreams of playing professional soccer. His mother was the one who introduced him to TV, and his love of film was born.
Turner goes on to describe his exciting role in the still-untitled Fantastic Beasts sequel. He had never actually met his on-screen brother, Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander) until his audition, but the pair quickly discovered they had much in common.
We grew up about seven minutes from each other but never saw each other. If you’re from exactly the same spot in the world, I guess there’s an energy that’s similar.
Turner has high hopes for the future, with many ideas for collaborations in mind, but keeps some sound advice from Jeff Bridges: “You pick something and you do it, and that’s the experience you have — the love that you have on that set, the friendships you make. If the movie’s good, that’s a bonus.”
It’s only been the last four years that I realized this is what I want to do. I’ve become an actor, rather than trying to be one, if that makes sense.
