“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” to Premiere in Melbourne, Australia, in 2019!
It has just been announced that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child will make its way to Melbourne, Australia, in 2019. This will be the third city for the stage show, which debuted in London in July 2016 and will have its North American premiere in New York City in April 2018, with previews starting in March.
The play will run at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre.
J.K. Rowling, director John Tiffany, and playwright Jack Thorne discussed the announcement in the video below. Tiffany says he’ll be heading to Australia at the beginning of 2018 to start the casting process. Jo reminds us that she’s never even been to Australia, so she may soon be heading that way for the first time!
We think it’s likely that at least some of the original cast will join the Australian production given that the New York City production, which includes seven original London cast members, has currently made tickets available only through November 2018.
And we’re glad to see the play making its way around the world to reach as many fans as possible! Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender say they had planned from the beginning to get the production to Australia and are happy to see it in Melbourne:
Melbourne is a fantastic city with such wonderful culture and heritage, and so we’re thrilled that the gorgeous Princess Theatre will be Cursed Child’s next home.
