Gary Oldman and More Receive SAG Award Nominations
Every year, the Screen Actors Guild gives out awards celebrating the best performances in television and movies. Though these awards are less well known, they’re a huge honor for the actors who receive them. This year, three Harry Potter alumni have been nominated for their wonderful screen performances!
Gary Oldman (Sirius Black) continues to garner praise for his work as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. He’s been nominated for Oustanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for this drama, which focuses on Churchill’s first years as Prime Minister.
Two movies featuring former Defense Against the Dark Arts teachers face off for Oustanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture. Dunkirk, which stars Sir Kenneth Branagh (Gilderoy Lockhart) is up for the award, as is Wonder Woman, in which David Thewlis (Remus Lupin) plays the main villain. Both movies take place during wartime, so it’s no surprise that they featured incredible stunts.
Season 7 of Game of Thrones continued to shock and amaze fans. It’s up for three awards: Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, Oustanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series, and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series (Peter Dinklage). Though David Bradley (Argus Filch) was only briefly present in Season 7, his performance as the evil Walder Frey definitely deserves an award!
The Shape of Water, which was scored by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows composer Alexandre Desplat, is up for a couple of awards, including Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role (Sally Hawkins) and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role (Richard Jenkins).
For the first time this year, the awards will feature only female presenters, in honor of those brave women speaking out about their experience with sexual assault in Hollywood. The SAG Awards air on January 21 on TNT and TBS, so good luck to all of these actors!
