Natalie Dormer, of Game of Thrones fame, has joined the Harry Potter family as the voice of the brand-new audiobook Harry Potter: A History of Magic! This original piece of non-fiction will coincide with the United States stay of the Harry Potter: A History of Magic exhibition to provide both the perfect companion to the exhibition and an alternative for those unable to attend.
The 11-hour audiobook will take listeners on a journey around the world, including places like ancient China, 14th-century apothecary shops, and the Salem witch trials. The course of the audiobook will be structured by Hogwarts subjects, such as Potions or Defense Against the Dark Arts, and will cover the rich cultural histories, intriguing artifacts, and fascinating folklore of the deep-rooted mysticism that exists in the real world and inspired the Harry Potter novels.
Listeners will also be privy to details of J.K. Rowling’s writing process and the development of the series with access to materials from Rowling’s and her publisher’s own archives!
The audiobook is further supplemented with exclusive interviews by illustrator Jim Kay and previous audiobook narrators Stephen Fry (UK) and Jim Dale (US) as they discuss their personal experiences and interpretations of bringing the story to life. Listeners will also hear from curators from the US and UK legs of the exhibition about the various featured artifacts on display.
Dormer has spoken of her delight at becoming part of the wizarding world.
I’ve always adored the Harry Potter books, but it wasn’t until I started speaking with the British Library’s curators – hearing about the various myths, legends, and cultures that have helped shape the wizarding world – that I really began to appreaciate the richness and depth of J.K. Rowling’s writing. There are so many wonderful details to explore and A History of Magic unearths some remarkable gems of information that are sure to have listeners awestruck.
Audible is also releasing a free audio tour of the New-York Historical Society exhibition that will feature Dormer’s voice and offer in-depth commentary about the showcased exhibits!
