Yates on 'bare' Radcliffe in Deathly Hallows, more
Yates on 'bare' Radcliffe in Deathly Hallows, more Several weeks ago, sites around the internet began picking up a rumor that Dan Radcliffe would bare all for the "The Silver Doe" chapter in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Now, confirmation comes from a new interview with director David Yates on VideoBusiness.com:

Besides detailing Half-Blood Prince, Yates and others also offered some surprising sneak peeks to the final two theatrical installments of the Harry Potter franchise, slated for 2010 and 2011 release. At certain points, Radcliffe will appear naked.

In one scene, “a horcrux [carrying a piece of Voldemort’s soul] defends itself by producing nightmarish visions, and one shows Hermione and Harry embracing and kissing,” explained Yates. “It’s something intriguing and sensual for Rupert to react to, and Dan will be bare for that.”

The article also includes comments similar to our earlier story where the cast and crew comment on the new Half-Blood Prince DVD and SS/COS Ultimate Editions. Heyman in particular noted that the Half-Blood Prince DVD has more extras than past Potter films. On lack of features in the past, Heyman says: "There was a part of me that doesn’t like extras, because I like the mystery of it all. But with the market being the way it is, it’s important to make the title as attractive a proposition as possible."

Potter cast, crew discuss wonders of DVD/Blu-Ray
Potter cast, crew discuss wonders of DVD/Blu-Ray Interviews with the cast and crew of Half-Blood Prince to promote the upcoming DVD release continue to be posted online - the latest one coming from Home Media Magazine. In it, the stars talk about the great features coming on the DVD and Blu-Ray editions:

“I’ve got the [PlayStation 3] with surround sound,” said Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy). “[Blu-ray] adds a whole new level to film. You can cram so much on it.”

“What’s amazing about Blu-ray is we can add this running commentary with the film,” added Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley). That “running commentary” is Warner’s Maximum Movie Mode, an interactive ride through the film that brings up film facts, commentary from the stars and director, photo galleries and more. “That,” said producer David Barron, “fans will find interesting.”

“I’m a geek when it comes to this kind of stuff,” [James] Phelps added. “Blu-ray, it’s like you’re there.”

Wizarding World to open in April 2010 at the latest?
Wizarding World to open in April 2010 at the latest? Back in September, Universal announced that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park would see a Spring 2010 release date. Today, it looks like we're getting that "Spring" time frame narrowed down.

MuggleNet reader Pammie has pointed us to Univeral Orlando's "2010 Gradbash" page (an event held for graduating high school students every year at Universal). It notes that attendees of the Gradbash - to be held April 23rd, 24th, and 30th - "will be the first GRAD BASH class to be able to step into an entire world of magic and excitement at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter".

With that information in mind, we can assume the Wizarding World park will at least be ready for visitors by the end of April. The bottom of the Gradbash page notes that "Prices, dates, times, rides, attractions and entertainment are subject to change without notice", so Universal is not necessarily guaranteeing an April opening.

As always, we'll keep you updated!

David Yates, cast on HBP Blu-Ray, DVD and more
David Yates, cast on HBP Blu-Ray, DVD and more Director David Yates and the cast of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows spoke to Brazilian blog Vira-Tempo about the Half-Blood Prince Blu-Ray and DVD, filming the final movies and the characters they play.

David Yates commented on the Half-Blood Prince live community screening Dec. 12:

It’s happened before, but not on the global scale that we're going to do because obviously there are Harry Potter fans everywhere on the planet. It's on December 12th of this year and Daniel Radcliffe and I will be answering questions directly from fans via BD-Live about how we made the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and some of the things that were challenging as we made it, and some of the things that I'm sure the fans will begin to know about: Why did we leave some things out? Why did some things come in? And it will be the first time that we'll really engage with that global fan-base on a minute-by-minute basis, so it'll be really cool.

Thanks to Snitch Seeker! Read more of the interview here.

Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint on Deathly Hallows filming
Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint on Deathly Hallows filming In an interesting interview with Sky News, Dan Radcliffe and Rupert Grint discuss the differences in filming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Of particular interest, Dan notes that he hasn't filmed one scene in the Great Hall in the entire 8 months of filming (so far) - a new record for him!

We can deduce that this means they have not filmed the final battle between Harry and Voldemort yet.

From Sky:

Daniel Radcliffe says filming some scenes for The Deathly Hallows has been so intense, it gave him a cold he couldn't cast off.

"'I'm in every day, basically," Daniel explains when Sky News catches up with him on the set at Leavesden Studios, near Watford. "I was lying in a pool of mud and dust and smoke and it irritated my throat and I developed a cold."

This time round the cast are doubling-up on their duties. The seventh book has been divided into two films that are shooting back to back. The first will be out in November 2010.

"It's getting quite confusing," laughs Rupert Grint as he takes a break from shooting to talk to Sky News. "We're kind of mixing them together, and because I've got longer hair in the second part I do lose track."

Felton, Wright talk Deathly Hallows epilogue
Felton, Wright talk Deathly Hallows epilogue Similar to the interview from Australia we showed you the other day, a Belgian newspaper has online new interviews with Tom Felton and Bonnie Wright to promote the Half-Blood Prince DVD. Of particular note is this photo of the cast (thanks, Snitch Seeker) on the Deathly Hallows set as well as Bonnie and Tom talking about filming the epilogue:

Tom Felton: We still have several months filming. The last scene we will probably be filming the scene 19 years later is playing. I'm very curious how we all will be.

Bonnie Wright: I'm looking forward to returning to King's Cross station. I had my first scene for the first Harry Potter movie ten years ago. I hardly knew then what acting was. I especially remember that I was freezing.

Tom: We've spent more than ten years together on this film set. We have grown up here. It will be strange to say goodbye.

Bonnie: Who knows, we can have a reunion in about ten years. What became of the actors? Maybe we'll play together in the Harry Potter musical. (Laughs)

Deathly Hallows named top book of past decade
Deathly Hallows named top book of past decade As we move toward 2010, The Telegraph is taking a look back at the top 100 books of the past decade. Coming in at No. 1 is Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The entry reads:

If you don’t know what a Muggle is by now, you’re either Rip van Winkle or enormously stubborn. This is the seventh and final instalment in Rowling’s record-breaking series about Harry Potter, the world’s most famous lightning-scarred boy wizard and his tribulations with Lord Voldemort. We’ve seen Harry grow from a spindly, messy-haired 11-year-old into a heroic young adult. Children have grown up with him, finding in his battles metaphors for their own. This volume alone sold 15 million copies in the first 24 hours after it was published. Whether wickedly skewering suburbia, or bringing Harry, Ron and Hermione into mortal danger, Rowling is never less than absorbing. Some may sneer at her books, but they are triumphant sagas about the defeat of evil that tap into our basic hunger for stories. Most importantly, she makes reading a 700-page book seem easy. This one even has a quotation from Aeschylus as its epigraph. It stands as a cornerstone of the decade, a melding of high and low culture that appeals to all ages and nations.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone came in at No. 41 on the top 100 films of the past decade list. Do you think Deathly Hallows deserves the top spot?

Thanks to Leaky!

Oxford University now has a Gryffindor house
Oxford University now has a Gryffindor house Wouldn't it be cool for your school's houses to be named after the four Hogwarts houses? At Oxford University, students are currently on their way to making that happen.

For the first time in 550 years, the Magdalen College Junior Common Room at Oxford has been changed to the Gryffindor common room. From The Telegraph:

Students are now campaigning to rename Christ Church, St Hughs and Merton colleges common rooms after the three other houses in Hogwarts; Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.

"Magdalen College embodies the values of courage, daring, nerve and chivalry," third-year student Zoe Tyndall, 21, who proposed the name change.

"These are the characteristics of the Gryffindor house in Harry Potter novels."

The motion was passed with only six students opposing the name change.

Tom Meakin, President-Elect of Magdalen Junior Common Room added: "Magdalen does after all look a little bit like Hogwarts, and not to put any noses out of joint, but my Vice-President does look a little bit like Hagrid."

Wizarding World of Harry Potter commercial airs on TV
Wizarding World of Harry Potter commercial airs on TV We've received three reports now about a small television commercial for the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park. It aired on NBC this morning during the Today Show. From MuggleNet reader Brooke:

It was simple with a black background with "The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, opening Spring 2010 in Orlando, FL" in yellow Harry Potter font. The voice over basically just read the same thing and explained that it was a Harry Potter theme park. I thought it was really cool to see because I live in Lexington, KY - obviously no where near the park!

Sarah M. wrote in to say that towards the end actress Emma Watson talks about how great the park will be and the commercial wraps with Hedwig flying over Hogsmeade and stopping at Hogwarts castle.

On a related note, Universal has passed along this new video they put together which includes all of the announcements we learned about in September relating to the Wizarding World. No new content, but it's a fun refresher!

Radcliffe, Grint on Pattinson's post-Potter success
Radcliffe, Grint on Pattinson's post-Potter success The BBC recently spoke to Potter stars Dan Radcliffe and Rupert Grint, who both comment on the success their Goblet of Fire co-star Robert Pattinson has had with his work on the Twilight saga. Here's what Dan had to say:

"I haven't spoken to Robert since we saw each other at the opening of a gallery three years ago," said Radcliffe. "We've been sort of exchanging advice through journalists, bizarrely."

"It is totally mad, when people are screaming and going absolutely insane for you.

"Particularly with Robert - the amount of women that would jump on him - you have to keep it in some kind of perspective, by thinking 'well, partly they like me and partly they are just attracted to the character'.

"As long as you don't think 'oh yeah, God they're all doing this - I must be absolutely fantastic'. As long as you do that, you should be all right."

Felton talks Deathly Hallows at Memorabilia convention
Felton talks Deathly Hallows at Memorabilia convention Potter actors Tom Felton and Warwick Davis were both in attendance at a Memorabilia fan convention in Birmingham over the weekend. Both spoke to fans about Potter, and Tom had some interesting things to say about his work with Deathly Hallows. From The Telegraph:

Felton said: "We've just finished doing the most substantial bits of filming.

"I think we're revelling in the fact that this is it- the last one. I get quite emotional just thinking about it."

"I'm not looking forward to not being blonde anymore. I've forgotten what my real hair colour is."

A report on Snitch Seeker from a fan who attended the convention also reveals that Tom touched on filming the Epilogue:

Tom was asked if he was to be used in the epilogue and as yet doesn't know but he told us that a mould of his face and the others was made last year and he was asked to provide photos of his brothers & father and remarked he couldn't wait to see himself wrinkly.

Reg Cattermole actor talks Deathly Hallows
Reg Cattermole actor talks Deathly Hallows Wales Online has a new interview with Steffan Rhodri, who will be playing Reg Cattermole, in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Rhodri talks about how he has not read the books, but has seen a couple of the films with his kids.

"But although I've not read the books, I've read the whole sequence I'm involved in."

He notes the difficulty of having to impersonate one character [Ron Weasley] while playing another [Reg].

Rhodri is filming most of his scenes with Sophie Thompson, who plays Mafalda Hopkirk, and David O'Hara, who plays Albert Runcorn. In the books, Hermione takes on the appearance of Hopkirk and Harry takes on the appearance of Runcorn. All three actors have spent time studying the mannerisms of Dan, Emma and Rupert in their respective roles.

The actors will be in studio for five weeks from December through February.

Imelda Staunton discusses Deathly Hallows
Imelda Staunton discusses Deathly Hallows In a new interview with The Daily Mail, Imelda Staunton (who plays Dolores Umbridge in Order of the Phoenix) briefly mentions returning for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows:

Another role that Staunton is to revive is that of the malicious Dolores Umbridge for the two-part film Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, which is due out next year.

'Now, that is a great role,' she says with relish. 'It was wonderful playing this baddie dressed in pink, and to be able to play her again is a real treat.'

Her first Harry Potter was in 2007. Did it change her life?

'No, not really. I don't get chased down the street by hordes of kids. I still live a very normal life.

'The one good thing is that I get a lot more good scripts coming through my letterbox. Vera Drake raised my profile in one way, and then Harry Potter in another.'

Rowling's thoughts of the trio at press conference in 2000
Rowling's thoughts of the trio at press conference in 2000 In a press conference back in 2000, producer David Heyman read a note from J.K. Rowling sharing her thoughts on the casting of Dan Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as the trio.

WB has released a new video of the press conference to promote the Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber of Secrets Ultimate Collector's editions.

"Having seen Dan Radcliffe's screen test, I don't think Chris Columbus could have found a better Harry. I am also delighted to see that we're going to have a screen Ron and Hermione who can bicker as if they'd been doing it all their lives. Chris's choice of three wonderful British actors for the leading roles shows how well he understands the spirit of these books. I wish Dan, Emma, and Rupert the very best of luck, and hope they have as much fun acting the first year at Hogwarts as I had writing it," Rowling said.

Harry Potter: Spells iPhone/iPod touch app now available
Harry Potter: Spells iPhone/iPod touch app now available Last week, we told you about a new Harry Potter: Spells app that would be released for iPhone/iPod touch customers.

Thanks to Michael, we've learned that the app is now available in the iTunes store! It can be purchased for $4.99 and features the ability to turn your iPhone/iPod touch into a wand! You can duel your friends, learn spells, and a lot more. Visit the website for the app at this link.

If you get the app, let us know what you think in the comments!

MY MINI REVIEW: At best, this app is very difficult to use. The app requires a very specific movement for each spell. I failed 30 - 40 times before I passed each one (these include the very first spells you learn where you just have to move your phone left or right).

To perform a spell, you must put your thumb on the screen, make the physical movement, and remove your thumb. Apparently you need perfect timing, orders, and physical motion to be successful.

The app would repeatedly say to me "Too fast", "Too slow", or "Try again". I can't believe how difficult it is to successfully cast just one. Maybe I'm just a bad wizard?

Don't buy the app unless you have a lot of patience and a strong arm.

Bradley admires young Potter stars In a new interview with The Sunday Express, actor David Bradley, who plays Argus Filch in the Potter movies disputed recent reports that some of the younger stars on set have let fame go to their heads.

"You wouldn't even know that they had made the money they have. Their parents and the people looking after them keep them grounded. They don't disappear off to their trailers in between bits, they hang around and chat like the rest of us. Those kids work really hard. I really admire them."

"Nobody's pulling rank on this one. We all have nice trailers and they all look about the same size."

Bradley notes, just like everyone else, he is sad to see the series come to a close. Thanks to Snitch Seeker!

Wizarding World expected to boost Universal's revenue
Wizarding World expected to boost Universal's revenue The Orlando Sentinel has a report online looking at a recent refinancing deal by Universal Studios Orlando. It and quotes analysts who hope the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park will keep Universal in a good financial condition for the long run:

But the rating service also said the business' outlook is stable. Now Orlando's No. 2 theme-park resort can turn its full attention to opening the Wizarding World of Harry Potter on time, which it and its lenders are depending on to boost business.

"The stable outlook reflects our expectation that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will provide Universal…a meaningful boost in revenues when the ride opens in the spring of 2010 and will also help the company maintain a sufficient margin of compliance with tightening financial covenants," S&P analyst Andy Liu wrote in a research note. "On the other hand, if the opening of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is significantly delayed, or if the ride fails to provide the expected boost, we could revise the outlook to negative."

JKR may return to MS Society Scotland, says Society rep
JKR may return to MS Society Scotland, says Society rep The Scotsman is reporting today that a rep for MS Society Scotland believes JK Rowling may return as a patron if an upcoming vote makes the Society independent again:

A special general meeting will this weekend hear the results of a ballot, including a resolution proposing the society in Scotland becomes independent.

Bill Findlay, a former chairman of the MS Society Scotland, said he believed that if the charity could start again as an independent body, Rowling would return as patron.

Visitors may remember that JK Rowling announced in April she was stepping down from her position in the Society after she could not "in good conscience, continue to be the public face of a charity that is changing beyond recognition from the one with which I have been so proud to be associated."

Most notable is the presence of the Hogwarts Express sitting at the main entrance. The train's placement at the front of the park has been well known as it was in the original concept art Universal released in May 2007.

Jamie Campbell-Bower has a bit more DH filming left
Jamie Campbell-Bower has a bit more DH filming left Speaking at a press junket for his upcoming role in The Twilight Saga: New Moon, the actor who will play Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows had this to say about the two film franchises and his progress on the seventh Potter film:
"He's an old friend of Dumbledore's, a possible lover," offered Campbell Bower at the LA press day for New Moon.

Asked to compare the experience of working on Twilight with working on the Harry Potter franchise, Campbell Bower said, "The Twilight phenomenon cinematically is relatively young so there's still a lot of growth there to go with the film, and there's still a lot of connections to be made between cast and crew and stuff, whereas with Potter they've been going for 10 years now. It's a machine, Potter. You go in, you do your thing, and then you go on. Whereas with this, it's a lot more finding out about everything and a lot more exploration to do in general."

Campbell Bower's not quite done filming his scenes in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows yet. "At the moment, I've only worked on it for about a week. I think I've got another week and a bit to go," revealed Campbell Bower. "They're still working on it. They're shooting simultaneously because they've obviously got lots of time scheduled and they have to do both side by side. Whenever they can, they will do that, I think."
Speaking of New Moon, I run an awesome Twilight fansite called TwilightSource.com! Visit it if you like Twilight.

John Hurt on Deathly Hallows and big budgets
John Hurt on Deathly Hallows and big budgets The actor who plays Mr. Ollivander in the Harry Potter series recently sat down with Rotten Tomatoes. In the interview, he reveals that he'll be heading back to the Deathly Hallows set sometime this month.

More interesting is where he voices his concern over Warner Brothers' large budgets for films in the Potter franchise:

Q: Do you think the big franchise movies shooting in the UK give a false impression of the health of our industry? All these productions move in and hire local talent, but they aren't British films.

A: No, they're not British films. Even Harry Potter isn't a British [franchise]. We gave it to Warners, we just sit and collect. That always infuriates me. I do think huge areas of the industry are being neglected and we've lost the ability for middle-budget films. When we did have a stronger industry -- and not just a business -- we did have room for middle-budget films. They've gone out of the window, as they've done in America as well, but a $20m picture would be wonderful to make every now and then. We could do a lot for that.

But it's like any country, if you don't have a lot of money to spend. And it's interesting seeing how much money gets spent on Harry Potter. It's quite absurd, really. I watch it and think it's just the same as Hollywood. I look around and you've got three costumes there, none of which are likely to be worn, and they're all replicas of each other. It's a vacuous waste of money and it drives me insane.

Benedictine monk supports messages within Harry Potter
Benedictine monk supports messages within Harry Potter We've heard of Harry Potter dissenters, but here's some religious support for the Harry Potter series, as a Benedictine monk is publishing "Baptising Harry Potter: A Christian Reading of Harry Potter."

"I do not think there is any intelligent view out there that says these books are evil. They are the sort of objections that come from people who have not read them.

"What are they suggesting we do, ban everyone who turns up at a children's party to do a few tricks," said Fr Luke.

"I don't feel at all that the books were leading children away from Christian spirituality.

"They are full of Christian themes of love and sacrifice," he said.

Every month should be breast cancer awareness month
Every month should be breast cancer awareness month Although October is over, we want to remind our visitors the importance in maintaining good breast health. Maggie Smith, the actress who portrays Profess McGonagall in the films, is herself a breast cancer survivor. She is not alone as one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime and 40,000 women perish each year from the disease.

Preventative care is essential in fighting this disease. A BeMitt is a preventative care tool designed to assist women in performing their monthly self-breast exams. Beth Bromberg, creator of the BeMitt, had several benign lumps removed from her breasts yet still wasn't doing her monthly exams. When her then 20 year-old daughter Jenna, a Harry Potter fan and MuggleNet visitor, discovered a lump in her breast, she decided it was time to spread awareness to make self-exams not just easier but more effective. She invented the BeMitt, a mineral oil-filled mitt that magnifies texture - allowing women to better know their breasts and increase the likelihood of early detection.

Early in October we announced our goal of raising $10,000 for Susan G. Komen for the Cure. We didn't quite meet our goal, but remember it is never too late to take action when it comes to your health. You can still show your support by purchasing a BeMitt.

Remember, every month should be breast cancer awareness month!

Cafe where JK Rowling first penned Potter reopens
Cafe where JK Rowling first penned Potter reopens Here's some great, bittersweet news. The cafe where JK Rowling started writing the Harry Potter books - with baby daughter Jessica by her side - has reopened. The cafe had closed and turned into a chinese buffet a few years ago, but a new owner has changed it back:

Owner Moira McFarlane, 42, says she’s more than happy for customers to escape the cold and spend the whole day reading, writing or chatting with friends.

She said: “It’s a big space, so we need to make it cosy – we will welcome people to come along and sit all day – and write books if they like. ”The businesswoman, who already owns the Spoon Cafe in Old Town and runs the Storytelling Centre coffee bar on the Royal Mile, says the cafe is unlike any other.

Read more, including the owner's thoughts on the cafe's popularity thanks to JK Rowling, at this link. I want to visit! Don't you?

Wizarding World construction continues - and fast
Wizarding World construction continues - and fast The Orlando Sentinel has published a nice construction photo update from the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park, and things are going up FAST! I visited the construction site just under two months ago, and I can't believe this is the same area.

The Orlando Sentinel writes: The skyline of Islands of Adventure continues to morph as the Wizarding World of Harry Potter goes up. It's fun that you can see Hogwarts from Interstate 4 now, especially in the eastbound lanes. We took the usual counterclockwise spin through Islands on Sunday and construction sounds were evident in a couple of places, including behind the tarps obscuring the Dueling Dragons castle.

See all the photos - including nice views of Hogsmeade, Hogwarts, and the Dueling Dragons ride - at this link!
