Yates' take on Book 6
Yates' take on Book 6 In a new interview with OOTP director David Yates and Potter producer David Heyman, they discuss briefly how they plan to adapt the Half-Blood Prince book.
Yates: It's about the kind of emotional and sexual politics of being a teenager. It's a very different swing, the next film. I think it needs to be for the series to keep evolving. In my work, every choice I've made I've always gone for something in the neurotically opposite direction. Once I've finished something, I've stayed keen to stay fresh as a story teller to try something different. The "Potter" world is so rich. They're so many things to play with in that world that it's possible to regear so the next one will be very different I think.

Posted by SceneLoveForLife Jul 9th 2007

well, i haven't [apparently] seen the new movie, but from the clips I have seen, Yates looks like he did a very good job on the movie. I am sure he will keep up the good work with Half-Blood Prince.

Posted by maki Jul 9th 2007

now that I can comment properly (sorry about the 2nd! thingy...I've never done it before and just wanted to know how it feels) : THIS IS AMAZING! yates seems to be doing his work perfectly! and it's so cool he's giving little hints in Ootp about harry/ginny!! one of my favorite couples! can't wait for HBP! it's the book I've enjoyed the most. And can't wait for wednesday! ONE DAY TO GO!...and a few hours... lol yates is so good I mean just look how he talks about the books...so cool....

Posted by bwof Jul 9th 2007

It´s great that Yates will direct the sixth one as well cause the fifth film seems to be the best of them all! I´ll see it on Thursday, that´s when it comes out where I am. Can´t wait :). Oh, and I´m still waiting very much for those videos from the LA premiere ;).

Posted by Potti Jul 9th 2007

Several sunlit days and a particularly happy hour is very sexual . ;o

Posted by mindymcmillan Jul 9th 2007

Awesome Interview. I can't want to watch the next movie!

Posted by dreamchill Jul 9th 2007

I think Half-Blood prince that will be the most hard to adapt to film.

Posted by FebFab94 Jul 9th 2007

I'm so excited t osee movie 6!! I think it'll be so cool... Wonder who is lavender

Posted by Save_the_Snidget Jul 9th 2007

I think its great he's spending so much time thinking about the characters becoming more adult and being loyal to the book. Just a movie??

Posted by herm_own_ninny Jul 9th 2007

Saw fifth film yesterday!much much better than third and fourth no offence to Laura but still out on whether it's better than 1 and 2 but still think Yates will do much better job than Curan!Reasonably happy with fifth so optimistic for sixth! At least the actors love him so thats one good thing!

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Jul 9th 2007

i dont doubt his direction, just daniels acting. i dont think he will pull off the being smitten thing very well. let alone his death in movie seven...

Posted by Anaela Jul 9th 2007

hehhehehe... yea i've been looking forward to this. not only because the plot of hbp was intense - but yea, because of the 'sexual' stuff. they're going to make a huge deal out of the casting of lavender brown, emmas going to play the scorned lover exceptionally - and, of course, dan going gaga over bonnie. its gonna be awesome. not to mention the love of tonks and lupin!

Posted by emilyli Jul 9th 2007

i hope the sixth film will be like the book. the other films haven't been like the books, the details haven't been in the films and that sucks . can't wait btw :D

Posted by Harry_iPodter Jul 9th 2007

Cool, awesome.

Posted by Inbl Jul 9th 2007

How about people stop saying 1st, second, 3rd and everything because I think we can all tell if you posted first!

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Jul 9th 2007

i dont think ron would approve of david saying harrys relationship with his sister was sexual...

Posted by Slytherin15 Jul 9th 2007

thats cool. when are they going to start filming it? or did they start already? i forget. i forget really easily you know. lol

Posted by OxfordGirl727 Jul 9th 2007

thats cool i guess.

Posted by emilyli Jul 9th 2007

they are starting to shoot it in august/september cause they have a vacation now. and the 6th movie is released in november next year

Posted by RyAn2006 Jul 9th 2007

" I think it needs to be for the series to keep evolving" IM DELIGHTED TO HEAR HIM SAY THIS! Every film, no matter how successful the previous, needs to feel fresh. And David has it spot on!! ALTHOUGH-i dont like him saying Prince is "SEX DRUGS AND ROCK AND ROLL..." LOL Although Heyman did say "No Drugs!" in the full interview which MN dont have here!!

Posted by loonyLuna01 Jul 9th 2007

wow....i don't know about this new sexual take one the Potter films..but it should be interesting. ; )

Posted by maki Jul 9th 2007

just a movie? it's based on a book in which we can clearly read about the tyranny of the Ministry and etc, instead of just a bunch of kids going to a school, do magic and fall in love. HP isn't just about that, and I think it's fine they just don't focus on special effects and looking good.

Posted by kissmysnitchumbridge Jul 9th 2007

Everything this guy says about HP is so awesome. I think he really gets it. I'm looking forward to seeing movie 5 mostly because of his comments. I'm eager to see what he does with the movie.

Posted by janu111 Jul 9th 2007

herm_own_ninny - how did you see it already??? i think if they make it too sexual they will change the feeling of the book...i mean there is a lot of kissing and relationship stuff but they might go too far

Posted by Zyzyx Jul 9th 2007

OFF TOPIC BUT EXTREAMLY IMPORTANT: One of the Mugglecast members got VERY excited by the prospect of the Prophecy being divided in a way that the first part (the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches) regarding Snape, as he ''approaches'' he room where the Prophecy was told and the second part regarding Harry. But the last line of the Prophecy clearly ''links'' the two parts ( THE ONE WITH THE POWER TO VANQUISH THE DARK LORD WILL BE BORN AS THE SEVENTH MONTH DIES) So it can't be that the ''vanquish'' thing is regarding one person (Snape) and the ''being born in July'' another (Harry). And Volemort clearly stated that Harry's parents ''were brave'' and that James ''put up a courageous fight''. So at the graveyard when the Priori Incantatem kicks in there ae no other spells shown except Avada Kedavra's. Not the Cruciatus used on Avery, not the ''Silver Hand'' and definately no signs of a ''courageous fight''. You could hardly say for a man who was instantly killed in a duel to have ''put up courageous fight''. Or maybe Voldemort just dodged James's spells and casted only one spell himself. But blocks, counter-curses and magical shields (Protego, LV's silver shield in the Ministry) are also spells, and even if he did cast only one spell in the duel again what about Avery's Cruciatus and Wormtail's Hand. And THE BIG QUESTION: Priori Incantatem: Frank Bryce, Bertha, and then Lily, WHERE IS THE AK THAT SCARED HARRY AND ''HURT'' VOLDEMORT? It should be between Bertha and Lily, but the Priori Incantetem didn't show it...

Posted by PotterLove06 Jul 9th 2007

the sixth movie is going to be very confusing for ppl who haven't read the books since it has all those memories in it bout voldemort's past

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Jul 9th 2007

i shouldnt worry about this film being explicit janu111, i think they just mean that it is getting more relationship based and so that will have to be reflected in the movie. i cant remember how your film censorship works in the US but i doubt it will even be a 15 over here in england. they wont make it "older" than it has been already.

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Jul 9th 2007

the funniest image just popped into my head: ron is arguing point blank with david yates that harry and ginny get up to no naughty hi-jinks other than some affectionate kissing and david yates arguing back saying their relationship is sexual and harry standing red-faced on the sidelines pointedly making no eye contact with ron. that situation could be a little tense...

Posted by dans_1_fan Jul 9th 2007

no offense to the people that work on the HP movies, but the books are soooooooooooooooooooo much better than the movies! the movies have been kinda dissapointing cus they're sooo different from the books. I hope that the sixth film is a lot more like the books. i have 2 say that it was a VERY bad thing that they took quidditch and SPEW out. what next? ron and hermione don't get together (we all know its gunna happen. after all, they kiss in the 6th one)? the ministry believes dumbledore about voldemort? i'm just sayin' that a lot of HP fans that were fans of the book first are really dissapointed in how different the movies are from the books, and i can't say i disagree. i'm not saying i don't like the movies, i'm just saying that they're really different from the books, and since i read the books first, i like them a lot more

Posted by janu111 Jul 9th 2007

asleep_at_the_moment- okay...i dont want the movie to be all about the relationships and not about the actual story... i no the relationships are a big part but they arent the only part ...there is still the actual story with the memories and the horcruxes

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Jul 9th 2007

oh i appreciate that. i will be disappointed if the relationships are bigger in the film than all the other stuff, but they definitely need to be there. i didnt mean to bring them right to the front of the film like the most important part of the story is harry and ginny...

Posted by emilyli Jul 9th 2007

i hope that it won't be all about the relationships and horrocruxes. they should have the details like kreacher and dobby following malfoy and you know ..

Posted by SM4RTYP4NTS Jul 9th 2007

ahhhhhh i just reread the sixth book and i think david yates will do a great job with all of the material. he seems to stay true to the books more that chris columbus did in GoF. SO EXCITED! (:

Posted by asleep_at_the_moment Jul 9th 2007

the whole book should be represented in the film as there arent that many irrelevant bit in the book. if they miss anything out it will be a shame but the only bits to cut are maybe harry getting slughorn at the beginning, lupin and tonks, and bill getting savaged. however knowing my luck, these will be highly significant points in DH. i shall find out in 11 days.

Posted by Save_the_Snidget Jul 9th 2007

I'm sure theyll incorporate as many different aspects of the story as possible, but it will be impossible to please everyone. Myself included. Theyll be more hype about the relationships to appeal to what the audience wants though.

Posted by sweasley Jul 9th 2007

I love Yates so far...but I've yet to see OotP, so that may change. But I'm all about the character growing and becoming more emotional and sexual beings, just like in the books. So I like the track he's on. Don't screw up HBP! :)

Posted by Save_the_Snidget Jul 9th 2007

Hear hear, sweasley! I love HBP the best of all the books so far.

Posted by tabitoo Jul 9th 2007

Hermione and Ron don't kiss in the 6th one, do they??? I thought the closest they got was at Dumbledore's funeral when Ron stroked Hermione's hair as she cried on his shoulder. I plan on rereading it anyways before the 21st.

Posted by xxxstinacakess Jul 9th 2007

I'm SO EXCITED. HP5 tomorrow at midnight :] I've watched two HP5 teaser chingadoras on HBO or something (with a guilty conscience, mind you, I wanted to keep everything a surprise) and it looks AHMAZING. I know I won't be let down, at least the first time around, because I already know this film is going to make me bawl when Sirius.. anyways they showed a split-second clip of Lupin holding Harry back and I KNEW!! I knew exactly what that was and I knew I was going to die. Bellatrix looks great, I was not let down. She has the essence of unbelievable hotness tampered with by hysteria. If Yates is directing HP6, I think we're in good hands, guys. Quit yo worrying.
