Mich, intitled to your own opinion, you are... but it is a children's novel through and through, and think about how depressed kids at the age of 12 would become if he did in fact die. and in fact, he did die, he just had a choice to make it final or not.
MichSet less: You sicken me. Don't see how you can call yourself a fan in the first place, this book was perfect and it had no "Cinderella ending". I have nothing else to say to you, I couldn't even finish reading your post because it was so bad... Anyways, I am going to buy the 7 book set thing in the chest too. As soon as I finished the book I went and ordered the UK version of it, I think those are the real ones right? It's the one with the scene in Bellatrix's vault on the front cover. Oh well I hope it's the original. I almost cried when I realised I had to read a copy that was bought at Wal-mart. It's just a thing I have...
it was a war, of course there were going to be characters like fred who would have died. all of the magic can't just avoid them like magic so all fo the main characters survive, that would be unreal. jo has been writing these for years and they are a big part of her life too. i think killing harry would have hurt her, she couldn't have done it, to herself and to us. i think it was brill and congrats to jo, Mich you are intitled to your own opinion of course. =) but like jhawk said it is a book for young teenagers, 12 year olds,
i dont understand how ppl can not like the book... it was SO AMAZINGGGG and i was still so overwhelmed with it, that even towards the end, i was reading so fast that and crying so hard (b/c harry was 'preparing' for his death) that i missed the part where it said harry was actually alive and i thought he really died..and then i went hysterical lol it was crazy.. THANK YOU JO for such an amazing series that we will never ever forget
Lilo- apparently you are not a true fan! This book completelyt went against her style and took the reality out of the entire series. It is realistic that they didn't kill Harry i understand that. I think she wrote this book to please the critics,, not herself or her true fans. I still think harry potter is the most amazing series and the first 6 books are more thann masterpieces and will go down in history. Im not trying to attack J.K. Rowling.. she is also my idol but this book really truly mad a negative impact in my life.
Well of course it's such an excellent book. :D
maybe lack of sleep has impaired me, but who is the character who "manages to do magic quite late in life"? that JKR mentioned??
While I agree that the ending was really disappointing ...up to that point I thought the book was amazing. Even as I was crying and cursing about unfair some of the deaths were, it was and still is an wonderful book.
i still hope jkr will answer some other questions though. we never did find out what the potters professions were. or what exactly was so signifigant about harry having lily's eyes. but i assume it had to do with snape and all that? especially with the part when he was all "look...at....me...." and i hope she tells us the other book titles she considered! and who got the reprieve. and i assume the two that died in place of the reprieve were lupin and tonks. maybe. i'm still so sad that teddy had to grow up without them :/ and i'm still very sad about fred :[ and i LOVED that the story had a happy ending. when i read the epilogue before the book came out, i too was a bit disappointed by all the happiness. but they all deserved it. i know it might not "seem realistic" but it's a children's book and a story about love conquering evil. it wouldn't have been right if harry died. and if ron or hermione died after their obvious love for each other had been made so clear, i would have been disgusted with jkr. so overall i'm VERY happy with the book :]
MichSet: Well, sorry, but I think you had it coming to you if you were expecting some kind of soap opera out of Harry Potter. That's ridiculous. Just because something you wanted to happen didn't happen shouldn't mean that you hate it. Just because it isn't as SAD and GRUELING as you want, doesn't mean it's horrible. But maybe it's just you. I, for one, LOVED the book! I had high expectations, even though I knew I shouldn't have, but it's okay: Deathly Hollows exceed them all! The plot was really what drove it through - and of course, since JK Rowling is a master storyteller - and I was really drawn into it. The story is just really, really amazing. I'm completely satisfied, and for some reason, the epilogue gave me some kind of closure, or else I would already have HP withdrawal.
BUT think about it. if jo HAD killed harry, then more fans would have been upset. the fans didn't want our hero to die. and you are wrong when you said jo was only trying to please the critics Mich. These are her books, she wrote them for her and wrote them the way she wanted them to end. they are her creation and she is happy with it. she didn't do it to please critics, she did it mostly for her as it is her story.
MichSet- although that may be your opinion.. what if Harry died? I'm sure you would have been disgusted to say that Harry was powerful. and so on. So you can't judge what J.K.R. wanted. Obviously it is and will always be her book, and if she chose to keep Harry alive, maybe it was for her own sake. I know for sure she had an unbelievable bond with him for 17 years. She was sure some people would hate the book, but have some respect. If Harry were to die, what would have happened to the wizarding world? I'm sure you would have been pissed if something else happened. Everything Jo does, is for a purpose. In her books and in her life.
i just cant believe its over. im glad its done but im sad its over... i cant get over it...
This is by far the best book EVER! I was actually teary-eyed wih Kreacher brave moment- I'm not going to give it away but it was touching! is I am definetly going to pass on the book to my children, and they'll pass them on to their children and so on and so on. Random note- I can't wait for the seventh movie! I really hope the climax is played out as well as it is written in the book!
MichSet: Don't see how you can say you don't think I am a true fan.. me? I'm not the one saying the book went completely against JK's writing. The book was perfect, any TRUE fan would say that. And not just because fans are blinded, but because the book really is wonderful. The only person on this website so far who is not a true fan, is you, and you make yourself look worse than you already do by trying to say that I am not a true fan. I have followed this book since day 1, it is my favorite thing in the world and always will be. In my eyes nothing compares and nothing ever will. And here you are saying that it was horrible...
Wow great job Jo!. This book was by far my favorite it made me Laugh burst into tear, jump up and down on my bed. and then it hit me no more to come. Which of course brought tears to as i'm sure every potter fan's eyes. But I myself could not have asked for a better last book. I bought 3! and one if comming in from england sometime today!
yet again, I DONT THINK HARRY SHOULDVE DIED. But she shouldnt have a holocaust book then... She was eprsecuting "mudbloods" like jewish people in the holocaust and let me tell you... that was very scary. I just wanted any twist and turn. There was not one! I predicted the book before it came out and i have never been able to do that before. It was too visible and easy to guess. Harry should not have died, you are right. But i wish it wasnt so perfect in the end and so scary in the beginning and a climax or turning point wouldnt be horrible either.
this book is fantastic i cracked up, i cried, and i now im crying because Harry Potter is finished
MichSet: How could she have been trying to please the critics? She's spent many years plotting the story out. The plot's been set in cement for over ten years. At this point, it didn't matter what critics wanted, or actually, what the readers wanted: the story had to continue along the lines she intended to. There was too much foreshadowing. JK Rowling was writing for herself.
I think she will release another charity book that will explain certain things that should have been answered... maybe she already did and everyone is oblivious to the answers. it could be very hidden, she's a master at that. Like i said, i think james and lily didnt have jobs because they are part of wizarding royalty, as we found out. does lucious or narcissa have any jobs.. nope... so, there you go. also, how the longbottms and potters thrice defied VM. I think, it might have been, 1) james tried to stop him, 2) lily tried to prevent him and 3) she begged and pleaded again. as for the longbottoms, i think they just thrice defied to tell VM where the potters were staying.
good point miraine.. the book had been plotted out for years. Plus, what did you want from Jo? Ending this book was a milestone in her life, and she loved Harry. Obviously there were reasons for her actions in her writing. I don't think she shielded anything she wanted to put in for the children that read the book. Jo put what she felt was right. Are you also saying that when Harry "died" you were pleased? was that a good ending for you?
harry did die, but she gave him a choice whether to die or go back. it is obvious what harry would have done! she was chosing harry's choice not her own. harry wouldn't have just let it all go, he wouldn't die knowing that voldmeort was still there and one horcrux was still open. he couldn't leave all he loved knowing that voldmeort was still alive. harry hadn't been able to rest in these books knowing that voldmeort was still alive, he would only rest when he died. voldmeort had killed all he loved, he wasn't going to give up like that, just die and leave it. no he had to finish it, he had to know it was over, relieve himself so he knows the ones who he loves will be safe now. harry wouldn't have walked away like that, so he came back. he was given a choice. jkr has used harry's perspective here, not necessrily her own. she did what harry would have done.
well its 170,000 in India... & considering that English is a second language for us...this is a HUGE number!!!!!!!
170,000 rupees!? really? wow, thats a bit extravagant..
not at alll! i didn't want harry to die. why can't people grasp that? J.K. Rowling is a master of making books that you cant figure out. I knew harry was a horcrux.. everyone should've known that. ANd everyone could see that Snape was a triple spy. i realllllly don't have interest in fighting with you guys. It's just that my excitement for this book was so overwhelming and I feel like she really took something away from me by the way she ended it. Please stop trying to argue with me everyone its not worth it because im not here to fight.
That's a solid number! I have to say that I absolutely loved it! I mean I can't honestly say that there is anything else like the Harry Potter series. The twists and turns in this last book were heart-wrenching at times and undoubtedly shocking. It was odd though because as I read the last few chapters of the book (maybe it was tiredness), but I really had a sense of deja vu. I felt like I had read the whole Snape/Lily thing before and even Harry's reincarnation. Thank you JK Rowling for making me read!
SPOILERS: Please don't read if you haven't completed The Deathly Hallows. I saw the Epilogue as some kind of tribute to us. Now we HAVE more to discuss - more to dream of. What did Harry do? What kind of adventures will the Potter family have now? JKR just gave us more to dream about - more to hang onto in the world that we don't want to leave. Tying up all the loose ends would lock the series completely, and who wants it to end indefinitely? I loved the Epilogue, because it showed me that life goes on - that Harry could get past the torment of his past and become a great husband and father, with no pain anymore. It filled me with overwhelming happiness to know that Harry really got the happy and complete life he deserved. Thank you so much, Ms Rowling! This book has surpassed 3 and 5 to become my favorite. It is simply outstanding and blew me away. The action, adventure, emotions and twists were amazing! The only slight loss I feel is when Harry never got to discuss Snape's goodness with him - instead he saw the memories. It would've been amazing to see that kind of conversation with the two long-sworn-enemies.
MichSet: I thought the story had so many climaxes... it was very exciting for me. And like a triple climax at the end. But the ultimate turning point would be... um, I don't know, maybe when /Harry comes back alive/? ---------- JHawk: I think I read somewhere that the only HP thing JK Rowling would do after this was, maybe, write a HP Encyclopedia and donate it to charity. ---------- By the way, lol, I like some of the couples in there. Bill/Fleur and Remus/Tonks, sorely for the reason for their children. And since it's never been set in cement that they were werewolves, I prefer to think of them as just that. Here's the first next generation of relationships, people: Teddy and Victoire. Teddy is a multicolored werewolf and Victoire is a 1/4 veela werewolf. How awesome is that?
Mich-i do agree that the book was a bit scary in the beginning with all the mudblood stuff, but a war was going on. she WAS being realistic. all the gruesome deaths that occurred, and that showed that this was real. i mean, what else do you think would happen if voldemort took over the ministry? voldemort is evil and he wasn't going to play nice with everyone once he took over the ministry. and because the beginning was so scary and sad, that made me glad to have a very happy ending. harry deserved an extremely happy life with ginny, ron, and hermione. and the book had MANY turning points. i nearly choked on what i was eating when i read some of the parts in the book. all the stuff about dumbledore, umbridge having the locket, kreacher's tale, snape's memories, etc. every few pages one thing or another was going on. it was very intense. but, you are entitled to your own opinion. but i think if anybody really and truly loves jkr and her books, and what she done with the rest of the books...they will appreciate the 7th book. because she had been planning all these things all along, and if that's what she wanted to happen in book 7, you should accept it, especially if you've loved all the previous books.
Can someone answer this for me? Was TED TONKS muggleborn or MUGGLE?
Thtats a good question...i thought he was supposed to be muggle but he was definetly using a wand wasnt he?
wotcher- i THINK he was a muggle. if i remember correctly when bellatrix and narcissa were talking about andromeda and who she married and all that. but yes, i'm pretty sure he's a muggle.
But you are also saying oh its a children series harry cant die!! But then.. why can innocent people be slaughtered and tortured and persecuted liek animals? make one opinion and stick with it.. either its a childrens series so harry couldnt die or something else but dont contradict yourself by saying that it had to be scary becaus eit wa sa war. And also how could harry possible find the horcrux's so easily when dumbledore, the greatest wizard of all time needed to take years to find one
MichSet: Okay, then. I can understand why you're upset. ---------- wotchermuggle: Ted Tonks is - wow, I don't know. Muggle?
MPPMarauderGirl- yo took the words out of my mouth. Harry could finally be happy and that after all he had been through. From the Dursleys to Voldemort, he showed that you can overcome the obstacles. Well said.
that was deffffff. my favorite book in the whole series, and of all time.
andromeda was blasted off the family tree for "marrying muggle ted tonks" and all of the black family refers to him as such. but we learned from tonks in book 5, that he was actually a muggle-born wizard. which is clear from the fact that in book 7, he does magic.
Thanks for the responses re: TED TONKS....I was wondering if he was the one who did magic later in life as he fixed up Harry. Couldn't remember if he was muggleborn or a muggle though, hence the question. Any one else have input?
What's gonna happen NOW though??
*SPOILER* did anyone actually laugh out loud near the end when Molly called Bella a 'witch" (not gonna say in case of little'uns)
oh thats a good theory, ted tonks is the one who peformed magic later in life!!... i think its ariana, but ted tonks it could be!!
aahh how ironic....my layout for mugglenet is the one saying: mugglenet, make a final stand, no snape is in the order. only that the pictures fo the characters on it are all dead, except for the small pic of the DA, otherwsie, my layout is dedicated to moody, snaoe, lupin, dumbledore and sirius. i have only just realised that.....
MichSet: Okay, here it is: it's a war. Harry could have died. But Harry DIDN'T die. You know, ever heard of survivors? Luck? And also, Harry could find the horcrux's easily because Dumbledore GAVE HIM ALL THE CLUES. He left a trail everywhere! Hollows, Nagini, Dumbledore solves most of them for Harry. And Dumbledore only recently started destroying Horcruxes, after he confirmed their existence. The only reason he only destroyed one, the ring, was because he was overcome by his desperation to revive Ariana. So technically, it doesn't insult his power that he died, it just proved that he had a lot of heart and fell to his strong feelings of love.
I have to agree with MichSet on this one. I just think that the story was very weak, and not quite up to JK's standards or style of writing. the horcrux hunt went way too smooth, and the ending was just too happy for a series that has been so dark up to this point. also, i think that it was totally pointless to bring the Deathly Hallows into the story at this point with absolutely no indication or foreshadowing of them in previous books. i was also extremely upset at the fact that the veil played no part at all in the book. i was sure that something would've happened involving it, and i feel like it definitely should have. honestly, i didnt want harry to die, but the ending was definitely much too fairy tale-esque for a story that has been centered around significant deaths for good causes.
sickkk!!! ... happy birthday daniel radcliffe!!!! ...
well, im fairly certain that ted tonks has always been a muggle-born wizard. but i am rather concerned about the fact that i cant identify the character who manages to do magic late in life. interesting suggestion that it's ted.
hmmm...i dont think it could be ted Tonks but i'll have to dig out book 5 again. As for what happens now hopefully in a few years JK will reconsider and write more HP
hey.. i dont know if you guys changed this on purpose but on the snape is with the order layout you have all the main adult human characters that die.. you should add fred =\ *tear tear*
btownhockey- you grasped exactly what i was trying to express thank you so much
doodo018 - i noticed htat too! i posted it somewhere above thinking ti was ironic....LOL i was reloading the page when i thought i would look at it closer, then realised. they should put fred on it....stick dobby and hedwig on it to.......*sobs*
