oh my god! it was amazing! i cried quite abit when i got the book...when doobbbyy died! when fred died i bawled worst was when harry was entering the forest about to supposedly die and his parent sirius and lupin were there oh and when dumbledore told his past! its soooo sad! i only have a couple of complaints! but you adressed them all in how some things were unanswered in your mugglecast episode 101! which was awesome! which i could have come but not trains go to london at that time! one question though why?! why did fred have to die?!!!!!
it was amazing. i bawled twice, when dobby died and also when his family came back in the end before he died. i actually had to stop reading and stand up to compose myself. i thought she did an excellent job, but didn't cry for fred
Loved it! Thanks for the great ending J.K.!
I think it's fair to say she's left it wide open for us to see Lilly, James and Albus Severus growing up with Rose, Hugo at Hogwarts. I don't think we've seen the end of Harry Potter at all. :)
I got ripped off! i want the other 25 pages! yet again, if you count the dang blank ones, it was 770 pages instead of 759 when they promised us 784! come on! what did they do? chop off another 25 pages the day after they said it would be 784? THAT'S NOT RIGHT! In other matters, Hermione swore for the first time, along with (colective gasps) Mrs. Weasley! Not to mention, that book 7 proved an important point: Ron has a potty mouth!!!
yeah epilogue could have been better. my guess is jo will give us a better explanation in the future. i was so shocked by some of the deaths! fred!! that was the biggest one for me. then hedwig & mad eye. & dobby??? no one expected that. then tonks & lupin???? what?!? i would think their son would live with harry, seeing harry was his godfather & he was in the same situation as harry. anyway....enough rambling....the book was great! definitely my favorite book.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! It was beautifully written, and I cannot believe how emotional I became at the end. So glad Hermione and Ron finally kissed! When Harry and Hermione went to Godrics Hollow to visit his parents' graves I had to stop reading just to pull myself together. How talented is JKR?! I knew we hadn't seen the last of Dumbledore, and I loved how she gave him flaws. It made him more human. ~To the person who asked why the Sword was pulled out of the Sorting Hat...I think it has something to do with how help will be offered to anyone who needs it at Hogwarts. I'm so sad its over...but so proud of Harry!
wow, this thread is moving, i cant read so fast! i was happy to see that snape was good, but i didnt find him to be as amazing as everyone else. he still favored slytherin all those years and he was still horrible to harry, i didnt find that part so wow! and i still dont get, why harry was giving to the choice to move on or go back, if he couldnt die in the first place bc of his blood and the everylasting wand. if anyone reads this and knows, please answer, thanks!
I really enjoyed the book, but I was disappointed by the Epilogue. Also, why were Ron & Hermione not with Harry at the Dursley's, as they said they were going to be? Why was Dudley suddenly nice to Harry? That whole chapter seemed out of place, as if a lot of necessary information was left out that would have made it plain.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!! She had me at the beginning! The way she had the WAR going, PERFECT! It takes a true Griffendor to pull that out of the hat!!! Way to go Neville!!! and Harry is Amazing!!!! I am going to cry!!!
JQsGal -- thanks for answering back. i figured that's what had happened after i thought for a while. but i still think it would've been better if harry had raised lupin. :]
JUST FINISHED THE BOOK! : ( I loved some parts, liked other parts, but overall, the book was AMAZING. i WAS AMAZED TO SEE THAT MANY OF OUR THEORIES (such as Snape loving Lily, and Harry being a Horcrux) HAD TURNED OUT TO BE CORRECT ! I WAS SOO SCARED AND FELT SO BAD 4 HARRY WHEN HE WAS WALKING TO HIS DEATH AND told his mother to stay With him. Sooo many tears shed, tears of joy and tears of grief... And I do not lose hope in the chance that Jo may not be able to lay off the series and may write another HP book. I know this from HOW SHE HAD TO CHOSE TO WRITE the LAST SENTENCE OF THE EPILOGUE : HARRY HAD NOT FELT HIS SCAR HURT FOR 19 YEARS, MEANING HIS SCAR COULD DETECT WHEN THERE IS A DANGER OF ANOTHER DARK LORD SUCH AS VOLDEMORT IN THE FUTURE, WHICH IS DEFINITELY POSSIBLE, IF NOT INEVITABLE.
I CAN"T BELIEVE DOBBY DIED!!!! He was my special favorite):.
one word. amazing. i've never cried so hard. it's so difficult to realize that harry potter is over. overall, my favorite hp book. except the epilogue, kinda cheesy.
Wow, this was the perfect ending for the series! Yay squeeee!
Amazing, amazing end to the story!...Though I was wondering did Snape ever confess his love to Lily? And if he did would Lily be so unfeeling and turn her back on him?...AND it's possible Lily never wanted to be with Snape cuz he was a death eater, and if Snape truly loved her, wouldn't he give up being a death eater, so he could be with her?...
Well I loved the book it was the best one ever! It was really different from the others and that made it so cool. But yeah the epilogue was a bit of a disappointment I'd like to know more!! I have a question though if Teddy was born when Harry was 17 and the epilogue was 19 years later wouldnt that make Teddy like 19 so he would be too old for hogwarts so that was weird. Well anyways I loved it and I'm pretty depressed it's all over. :(
I thought it was amazing. This seventh book gripped me more than any of the other ones. The action is almost non-stop. I think my favorite chapter had to be "The Prince's Tale." I knew that Snape had to be good, but I never realized the extent of his story. Lily was his best and only friend, and he loved her until the day he died. I thought the Epilogue could've been done better, with less dialog and more facts about the characters. But whatever. I'm not complaining. JKR spent 17 years writing Harry's tale, and I'm greatly satisfied with the ending.
It's too early to tell.
It was a superb book and the battle at the end was great. However, I thought the end didn't talk about Harry's emotions as much as usual? Maybe it's just me. Sometimes it felt like some explanations were rushed and thrusted upon us. It was good, though. Full of action.
NNNNNNNNOOOOOOO!!!!!! WHY DID FRED HAVE TO GO!!!!!!!!!!???????WHY??? ???
I thought the book was amazing. I am not sure if it is my favorite, I am going to have to go back tand re-read it. The death of Dobby was the most touching seen in the entire series. I wish there could have been more in the epilogue, but come on, we had seven great books, I think we can handle not knowing what exactly happened to each of the characters.
The whole book was amazing. The epilogue could of been longer though.
Well, I finished the book about an hour and a half ago (I've only just got online) and I have one word to say about it: AMAZING!!!!!! Definately my new favourite of the series. It was well written, confusing in places, but a definate good read. Now I was gonna have to wait until tomorrow at the earliest to get my copy cos the stupid computers at the bookstore where I'd pre-ordered crashed and the orderlists were lost, but my amazing sister, unbeknowen to me, went out and bought me a copy from the local supermarket and I was reading it by 8pm Saturday night (she'd been in work and didn't get home til then) It's taken me this long to read it cos I've had to keep letting my mom have a read, but I finally finished it and it was fantastic. Now onto my short (hopefully) review. Now, I agree with Rachel (Emma) about who was chosen to die. Hedwig, Dobby and Mad-Eye were definate shocks. I thought Mad-Eye would be kinda like the leader of the troops cos he was the really strong one. I think I cried most at Fred, Lupin and Tonks' deaths, even though I knew a Weasley would go. Lupin and Tonks really shocked me, but like Clare said, when Remus told Harry that he would be Teddy's godfather, I knew one of them would go. Snape was a definate surprise but when I really thought about it, you could see it inevitabley comming. Now, the Dumbledore family thing and him being friends with Grindelwald was a bit wierd. I didn't really get that, but it did add color to Dumbledore's past. The whole Snape being good and loving Lily for like forever was a really good storyline and I was kinda happy when Harry dived into Snape's memories and it showed Lily's childhood and her Hogwarts days. And as for the Malfoys... I kinda knew that a good streak would turn up in the end. Now, the epilogue had me in floods of tears. Not because I was still sad about the deaths and everything, but because it made me so so happy. I mean Harry got Ginny and kids. Ron and Hermione hooked up...
DOBBY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! FRED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! TONKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!LUPIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best . Book. Ever. Sad, but amazing!!!!
I was thinking about Hermione's middle name. I thought JKR said 'Jane" but in this book when they were listing Dumbledore's Will, it said 'Jean'. So I'm just confused. They epilogue was good. I love the fact the trio and Ginny are actually relatives. And JKR should tell us like things like what jobs they do. etc. There are still some questions unanswered and it's mostly at the epilogue. Perhaps Mugglenet and Leaky could do another interview with Jo? That'll be great!
I enjoyed the book very much. I do think that there should have been more of a fuss about Fred's death. I also think that Tonks and Lupin should not have both died, she just had a baby. Unless she plans to write another book, think of the endless possbilities of having Harry as a God father. I also would have liked a longer epilogue explaining what all our favorite characters were doing and what Harry and Ginny did for a living. (He is rich). As far as his being old, 19 years and 17 years is only 36. Not exactly an old man. I am glad we know about Neville and Hagrid. THe battle was awesome. Great book just the epilogue should have been longer, maybe we will learn all that in her upcomming enclyclopedia. Hope so
I LOVED IT! I have never cried so hard during a book in my entire life.
I'm kinda undecided about this book. I read a few of the reviews you guys posted and I agree with some people. First of all, thorough the whole book I was under the impression I was reading fanfiction. It seems the characters were a little off, or maybe it's just me. I also thought that some things were totally unexplained or modified from the other books... I thought the fact that both Dudley and Malfoy change and become "good" (well as good as they can be) kinda cheesy. I hated the fact that in the end, Harry completely ignores Ginny when he knows he's going to his death, at least Hermione finally kisses Ron (loved the fact that she made the first move and not him!). Most of the deaths didn't have purposes. At least Dumbledore's death was explained... I can understand Jo needed Mad-Eye out of the way because he was too much of a safety belt for everyone if you know what I mean... But all the others quite frankly didn't need to die in my opinion. I felt the action was kind of thrown in, and it's hard to imagine what the weeks and weeks of doing nothing must've been like with just the many "days turned into weeks" Jo put in the book. Overall, the book reminded me too much of a few fan fictions I read... I guess some people guessed right because some of the stuff / plot twists were exactly as they were in a few fan fictions. I'm not sure what else to say. My thoughts are still too mixed up after reading the book. I think the more I talk about it the more disappointed I am, but reading it is as entertaining as always. It's probably my second least favorite book (least one being chamber of secrets)
AMAZING!!! my fav book! but could have been even greater if the epilogue wasn't that bad (What they have done with my Luna!!)
Ehhh...this book was kinda disappointing. The first part was close to boring. Last three chapters were awesome. Epilogue was kind of confusing- i couldnt figure out whose child was whose.
i loved it finished it in 25 hrs or so. don't keep track, i loved every inch of the book of course i always had tissues near and ecspecially toward the end when things started to happen that i was like OHHHH NOOO.... and the epilogue was not quite finished ! it was a bit sad that we didn't get to see ginny and harry's wedding and ecspecially ron and hermoine finally admitting there "love" for one another i also was very happy about how the plot came together there were times in the book when i thought something was never going to happen. and i like how dumbledore was not completely gone from the story line. it made it all the more interesting. i would've like alot more and i am a little up set about the missing number of pgs out of the book as everyone else is ! it's upsetting truely.
Ok. everyone seems to HATE the epilogue, but i thought it was alright. It was the one infallible way to show that the war ended the same night as the war at Hogwarts and who really got together with who. I had wondered if Ginny gave up on Harry or not before the epilogue. I thought it was a cute way of showing that life went on after Voldemort.
The person to do magic later in life was Dudley. JKR put so much emphasis on love throughout the whole series. Lily saved Hary with love, love was the power the Dark Lord knew not, Harry's self sacrificing love for his friends kept them from being harmed in the end of the battle after he came back. After sixteen years Dudley was finally able to express, in his own way, that he loved Harry.
All in all, a momentous, if not slightly fanfiction-esque end to one of the greatest series our generation has seen. Many things were left unanswered, including things we were told specifically to expect - who achieved magic later in life? It was not Ted, he was muggleborn, not a muggle, Tonks tells us so in OotP. Ron's Parseltongue is a possibility but I believe JKR was hinting towards one of the squibs. What were the occupations of James, Lily, Harry, Ginny, Hermione, Ron, Draco? Who is Scorpius's mother? It was a powerful book, in certain parts, though the middle dragged and sudden deaths of characters (Fred, Mad-Eye, even Remus and Tonks) lost their impact after the original quick and shocking death of Hedwig. After the location of Slytherin's Locket and Kreacher's story, when the trio were, in essence, camping, the story seemed somewhat dragging and I was forever expecting one of them to finally stand up and say, "Well, now we shall actually DO something!" Alas, I admit: finally learning that Regulus was RAB, especially that Arcturus was his middle name (I write fanfiction and had this down before DH came out), made me jump around and even tear up a bit. Perhaps I am touched by the wrong things here, but still. Kreacher's Tale was heartwrenching and respect for both him and Regulus skyrocketed. As well, as we FINALLY learned the Severus loving Lily is the answer to many, many things, I jumped around there as well. My friend owes me ten dollars for this. I had almost lost hope - we were so near to the end and Severus had been displayed as so surely on the dark side, but JKR did Lily and Severus's plotline better than I have ever imagined it. Props for that. Perhaps the most emotional moment, for me, was strangely enough when Harry, Ron and Hermione returned to Hogwarts - to see the castle, Neville, and all of the DA again, fighting even without their leader. Luna and the DA amazed me, but I believe Neville stole the show here. CONT'D -
It was the best harry potter book EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I was just thinking; where were the spouses of the hogwarts professors that we were suposed to meet?
The book was simply amazing!....J.K. Rowling gave a fitting end, however, like the others, I feel the Epilogue needed more, but as J.K. Rowling said. Never say Never. I believe with the Epilogue she's left an opening for her to go back if she ever decides to. I cried so hard at Dobby and Fred's death and Harry's walk to death with his family. I'm still crying actually. I think when I read about Dobby, I cried for a good two hours and i still get teary eyed talking about it. I can't wait to see this book on the big screen...however with what's inside....I see a big chance that Dealthy Hallows the movie will be rated R Blessed Be Always cory_myers2001@ya hoo.com
It was AMAZING!!!!!!! the epilouge, however, was a HUGE letdown, there was a lot more stuff I would have liked to know, but in all, a good ending to the story.
FANTASTIC. I love being right and I was right about EVERYTHING that I'd theorized. I'm so happy that there is ZERO room for conjecture about anything and I'm thrilled that Harry LIVED, Ron and Hermione LIVED, and Jo gave us the Hollywood ending. All those "goth" nutters floating around on these chatboards yammering on and on about how it was certain that Harry would die, Ron would die, Hermione would die ... well, it will be so nice never to come out here again and have to read that tripe. I cannot tell you how happy I am with how it all turned out and how happy I am that this is finally over. I'm now deleting all HP sites from my favorites and I'm never going to argue with children again!
I thought the book was absolutely amazing!! It took me almost all day to read the book, started at like 2pm and didn't fisnish til 3am with breaks and stuff. I actually liked reading that about Dumbledore. After all he was only human. I knew like all along that Snape was not evil, and I'm kind of sad that he died. I liked his character. And I liked the epilogue. It isn't actually part of the book, it isn't a chapter. J.K. Rowling didn't write things that she didn't feel had to be in the book. Some of the questions that some people have don't really matter much. If she wanted some things in there, she would have wrote it. Well, this book might be my favorite book of the series. I'm going to read it again to make sure. Amazing job Jo!!
Best book ever. Enough said. I just want to thank Jo for all the magic she has brought into my life with this book series.
wow. i read through the night and the next morning, finishing late saturday afternoon. there were somethings that i was sooo sure of (harry is NOT a horcrux, we WILL go behind the veil, ron and hermy WOULD get together at the wedding, we WOULD see the mirror of erised, ETC) that didnt happen. but there are sooo many more things that did! wow. and chapter nineteen (when ron saves harrys life and the horcrux tortures ron and omg ron and harry hug *tears* and then when hermy goes off on him) was my FAVE! i cant wait to see a fan art of that scene.. in the snow.. ron holding the sword, teary, harry watching the evil harry and hermy kiss.. what an awesome scene! (i am SUCH a ron/hermy shipper). victorie is definately fleur and bills daughter... the epilouge was lacking... i am seriously thinking of writing a fanfic right after the last chapter (not epilouge) i have some really good ideas too... :)... all in all... I LOVE IT AND AM GOING TO READ IT AGAIN ONCE MY SISTER HAS FINISHED.... WAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOO!!!! I LOVE JK!!!!
I was one of the one's that spoiled the book for myself by reading it online, and now I am so ashamed of myself. My reasons for doubting her were selfish. By the time I worked myself out of my funk before heading over to the bookstore on Friday night, and by the time that I had the book in hand, I had a different attitude and it helped. IT WAS HER BOOK! Nothing she did in it, in the end, felt like that much of a surprise or contrived as I originally thought. It was, like I scolded many people when HBP came out, because we all had 2 years to speculate and theorize about what would happen. She walked us up the garden path again (Horcruxes) and then shocked us! And I fell for it at first and felt disappointed. I thought there was no emotion, no humor, and then I found it again. I cried when they toasted Moody, I bawled for 15 minutes straight (and I mean bawled, sobbed, the whole 9 yards!) when Dobby died and Harry buried him. Those two scenes being the kind of thing that JKR does best - take a simple thing (like Harry thinking about "Nitwit!" etc. at Dumbledore's funeral) and making it live with emotion. I'm sure when I read it again I'll cry over Fred. I'm still said, but it hasn't hit me since at the time my two pre-school children were clamoring around me and distracting me! But Harry's realization of having to "die" and his walk to the woods were so, well, Christ-like! Now I know why JKR said that if anyone asked her about her Christian beliefs they would know where she was headed in the books! Harry matured then. I mean, he always knew, but when really really struck with it, he did it. It reminded me a little of the last Pirates movie between Jack allowing Will to stab the heart and the way Will seemed afterwards - like all the innocence was gone, but not in a bad way - it was maturing, not dirty. Harry became a man in that moment. And I cried when Hagrid carried his body, because I remembered how he carried Harry so lovingly to Privet Drive.
"Deathly Hallows" was simply AMAZING!!! It was brilliant ~ my favourite now of all the HP books (how can it not be), and also I think it was the best book I've ever read. Thank-you Jo for making reading wonderful!
I agree with most that the epilogue was disappointing. What I got out of the book in general was not a sense of finality but a sense of a beginning. Contrary to what JK said she didnt end the series in my opinion. She opened up new areas to write. I dont believe she is finished. I thought when she began that she only wanted to go 7 books but there is so much more she can do with this, some many more places to go. I do foresee an eventual answer to the missing 18 years. I believe she will stop for a few years and see how much she misses Harry. This isnt over by a long shot. This may seem really petty but after 7 years of crap Harry put up with at the hands of Snape I, as a father, have a very hard time believing he would give his child a middle name of Severus...that was a little too much. Over all though thank you JK Rowling and I look forward to the next books which are already stirring in your mind! Everything is set up so perfectly for the same actors to pick up where they left off when Rowling wrtes more Potter
best book ever! loooved it!
omg! omg!omg! i seriously loved this book! i got the book friday at 1230am. :) then i fell asleep reading, i got to chapter 3. then on saturday i read from 11am, to 11pm straight! and finished the book. i cried so much in it. hedwig!!!
Alright, well..Neville shoule have DEFINITELY killed Bellatrix, that bothered me. But its better than her not dying at all so, that's ok. The Epilogue was really corny, they never said what happened to Luna or Cho or any of the smaller characters, it would have been nice. They never said the wizard who discovered magic late in life, and that got me mad too. The book was absolutely FANTASTIC though, no doubt my favorite of the series. I hope JK writes the book about all the backround information on the characters, that would be pretty cool! But yea anyway, the book was marvelous, i was crying nearly the entire time. RIP fred/lupin/tonks/mad eye/dobby :(
I loved the book but I was totally gutted that she killed Fred, Tonks and Remus - especially when they'd only just had a baby! The bit where Harry was talking to his mum, dad and Remus when he used the resurrection stone had me crying - especially when he was apologising to Remus about never seeing his kid. I'm glad we got to see a bit more about Lily's past and see that her and Petunia didn't always hate each other, and I felt so bad for Snape!
