The book was just excellent. I really found it amazing that she put as much humor in it as she did, considering it was a war. As far as the epilogue woes go, Rowling did a pretty decent job with it. Granted it wasn't anything like anything seen in the books so far, but Harry Potter deserved a happily ever after and that's what she gave us. I think I would've been more disappointed if she dwelled on details (ones we could use our own imaginations for to satisfy ourselves with), rather than getting to the point that he finally had a family and children he could show the same care and love to that he always wanted.
I wonder what kind of movie will result from this. There is no way that anyone can capture everything that happened into a two or three hour film. Best book of the series! So sad that it is all over!
I just finished my fourth reading of the book, I finished it at 3 am Saturday morning for the first time. I sobbed for Fred, and for Dobby, but most of all for Severus Snape. Snape loved Lily from when he was 9, he loved her with his whole being, but she left him because he said one thing wrong, one thing that he didn't mean, and she married James, who tormented Severus whenever he could, and poor Severus had to watch over James' son for 7 years, 7 years of looking into James' face and seeing Lily's eyes, and knowing that it was his fault Lily died... and even in the afterlife, Lily and James would be together, and Snape the odd man out...
The book was great minus the 100s or so of pages of them sitting around learning nothing important. Pages she definitely would have condensed in her earlier novels. The last chapter left no closure we really didn't learn about any character that was created AFTER the first book (Luna, the Death Eaters, etc) It was definitely written at her skill level before the first book was approved by editors. It was as if JKR could do whatever she wanted because she's JKR. Any other author would have been told to rewrite that chapter and bring it up the skill of the rest of the book. I'm really disappointed that we didn't get real closure to the 2nd battle of Hogwarts. We find out who died, but not how it affected everyone else. I really would like to how George's personality changes without his other half. A simple chapter held a week after the battle as a funeral of the fallen examining the recovering wizarding world would have been perfect or even a summary of all the characters. We the fans deserve closure to how the Wizard World ends because this is our last window into it. (of course she could easily come up with an Albus Potter or Rose Weasley spin off and continue her world) Now my rant is over I loved the book so much but the end really leaves me wanting some sort of closure. By the way, anyone else notice the resemblance of the prosecution of Muggle-borns similar to prosecution of Jews and how this was the 2nd war of the wizards hmm?
I actually loved the epilogue. The last sentances wrapped it up for me. I think it means that Harry was no longer wondering about Sirius's death, or anything else... I also kind of hate the book because I don't think I'll ever be able to reread the books and still feel my eyes brimming over with tears of happiness when Neville wins the House Cup in SS...or in OOTP when Rita Skeeter writes that article in the Quibbler and people start hating Harry less...and especially at all of Fred's jokes.
greatest book ever but one question WHY LUPIN??? no really i love this book
I love book 7!!!! The only thing i didn't like about the epilogue was that it was too short ; i would have liked to have found out more about other people besides the trio. Even then, i would have liked to have found out what the trio and Ginny grew up to be. Did Harry become an auror (do they still have a need for aurors)? What happened to the Dursleys? What ended up being the significance of the heart room? Was it just to establish an importance about love in general, and not really about the room itself? Also, what were the voices behind the veil, will we ever find that out? Is greyback dead? Last we heard he was engaged in battle, but we never found out if he died. If he did, was it by Avada Kedavra, or something silver? Whatever happened to the Weasley's joke shop? (moment of silence for our beloved Fred!!!! It still makes me want to cry sometimes). Did harry and Ginny go back to live in Grimmauld place? What happened to the Wizarding community? Griphook pointed out the injustices against magical creatures: the unfairness that they don't get to have wands, the treatment of house elves, etc. After they all helped in fighting Voldemort and his Death Eaters (the centaurs, the house elves, Grawp), were measures taken to establish more unity between the members of the wizarding world?
Harry and the Potters put it best:: "THIS BOOK IS SO AWESOME!" Guys, this is the best book ever!
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this book. It was amazing, so many things were answered, and it just came to a brilliant close (Except for the stupid fan-fic epilogue.) And JK didn't keep some of her promises, but w/e. I loved Snape. I knew he loved Lily and that he was good. It would kind of be silly to have 6 books of Harry saying "SNAPE BAD!" and Dumbledore saying "NO! SNAPE GOOD!" and then have Dumbledore die and have everyone be like "JK! Harry's right! Snape IS bad!" I used to hate Snape just because he was so gross and mean to Harry, but after reading OotP again, he moved up to my favorites. He's such a strong character, having to convince the Death Eaters AND the Order that he was on their respective sides. He had such a hard life and I respect him. Had I not though he was going to die, I would have sobbed. I'm still crying inside about Fred. That was the first time I have cried during Harry Potter....actually, during any book. (I later on cried again when Harry was walking to his "death".) I didn't cry when Sirius died or even Dumbledore. At first, I was so angry. I almost didn't finish. YOU CAN'T JUST KILL THE COMIC RELIEF! But then after sobbing into my mom's shoulder for 5 minutes, she said that in war, the wrong people die. JK can't just not kill someone because she's afraid of it hurting someone. That's what makes her such a great writer I guess. Hedwig, Mad-Eye, Dobby, Fred (*SOB*), Lupin (saw that coming so no tears), Tonks, and Snape...These people didn't have to die. JK knew that the entire world would be mourning for these people, but she killed them because that is what would have happened in real life. The bad guy isn't NOT going to kill someone just because they are funny, or nice, or have cool hair. He's going to kill them becuase they got in his way, and that is what makes The Deathly Hallows such a great, realistic piece of literature. On the upside...LUCIUS MALFOY LIVES!!!!!!!
R.I.P. HEADMASTER/PROFESSOR SEVERUS SNAPE Thank you Jo for proving that mine (and many others) loyalties to Severus Snape were not in vain. Though I wish his death scene could of been more heroic, the fact that Harry FINALLY realized what a great man he was my favorite part of the epilogue. I raise a final butterbeer toast to you Severus, and all those who perished in the fight against the ultimate evil. Favorite Lines: "Look....at.... me..." - Severus Snape "NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU (female dog)! - Mrs. Weasley "You see...I'm holy. Holey, Fred, geddit?" - George Weasley "Severus Snape wasn't yours" - Harry Potter "Albus Severus....you were named for two headmasters of Hogwarts. One of them was a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew." - Harry Potter *sob*
it wasn't that great a book. First the good: the humor, great suspense, the despair midway very believeable, great quest clues and introduction of new characters and greater knowledge of the old. The bad: the symbolsim with nazi Germany was a little toooo obvious and much editing was needed re: Dumbledore's youth (excerpts for pages on end??). I also wanted to see Umbridge get her comeuppance. And I don't understand WHY Harry had to sacrifice himself. If he was the true master of the Elder Wand and its spells couldn't hurt him (ie the Crucio curse after he died) why didn't the wand just kill the part of Voldemort that was in him but leave him unharmed?? Seems like Jo wanted a comparsion with Christ (Yuck!!) The deaths: Iunderstand some were necessary, but why Tonks and Lupin leaving an orphan behind?? And why Colin instead of another minor charcter like Ernie or Justin or Terry??? She seems to have killed off all my favorites. I sobbed when Oliver carried Colins' body back. I just hope if Harry intends to live in Grimmauld Place with ginny he doesn't put the Elder Wand back until he has taken off the portrait of Sirius' mother, since nothing else can do it.
wow i loved this book! it was amazingly written and another one of jk's masterpieces. unfortunately, the entire part where harry, hermione, and (mostly) ron where traveling in the tent was too boring for me! after that however i loved it! the epilogue was a little weak for my taste...what happened to luna, george, aberforth, and all the other characters? what jobs did they do? other than those minor details it was a great book!
This book was utterly amazing. I enjoyed it sooo much, i'm reading it again. It is probably one of my favs of the series so far. I still don't get why some of the ppl/animals/creatures had to die. I think the person who "learned magic" might have been Ron learning how to speak parseltongue, however thats just my guess and i'm sure its probably wrong. I was very glad that harry and ginny got back together. I do wish more explaination had been given about what happened in everybodys later lives. On the whole though it was pretty fabulous and i'm sad there won't be more to come.
Omg...Its by far The best book I've ever read......and probably ever will read, J.R. You are an absolute genius. and I love you. XD lol And My favorite person died...That really sucks. *crys* *Hugs Her snape doll*
oh and i absolutely loved Kreacher... he was like my new favorite character haha. anyway, im really sad the series is over and i can only hope that JK writes an encyclopedia... and that she falls in love with another idea and writes a new series about something else...anything she writes would be funny/exciting/and magical!
no idea how they're going to do the movie. I know it is going to be slaughtered, the ends of other books like PoA, but this one is much larger and complex
DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK that JK Rowling based her last book on fanfiction? i had the impression I had read all that before... and i really disliked the ending... it was so fanfiction-y....... very much!
the book was awesome, my sister has read it about 3 times so far and she still wont let up on talking about it. I am glad the book ended like it did.
It was insane. I loved it. And I sobbed many times. But it was awesome.
How did Neville get the sword from the Sorting Hat when Griphook took it at Gringotts? I think there are more loose ends then before we got the book.....But it was brilliant anyway!
I have a mixed feeling about the book. No doubt though that the chapter about Snape's memory was the best, probably in the entire series. I was shocked my Dobby and Fred's deaths...I knew one of the Weasley's would die but never imagined it to be Fred. He was my favorite. And Dobby...well, he was the coolest little guy. I was disappointed by the epilogue. All was well alright, they had kids. But honestly, there were quite a few questions left unanswered as many of you have pointed out above. First of all, we never found out the secret of the veil. Secondly, what did happen to rest of the characters? I mean we could have easily guessed that Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione would have gotten together and have had kids (it was odd in my opinion though that he named his kids after his parents...the family tree would really start going in circles. Anyway, I agree that one of Harry's kids should have had Sirius' name). But what about their professions, and George and Luna's futures. I reread the book and cried when I got to Bill & Fleur's wedding - Fred's talking about how his wedding would be like. To whoever said that Ron/Hermione didn't kiss till the battle of Hogwarts - you really should reread.
Yeah, with the epilogue: I was hoping to get more of a glimpse of Harry and Ginny's life together...I mean, do they have jobs?? Overall---the deaths were really shocking and quick, and I still don't REALLY get why Harry didn't die (again!) but it was pretty awesome!!
the book was really good but.......didnt like the epilogue...it just didnt seem harry potter-ish u kno? it was like reading a fanfiction! i was just really let down...and the names werent a treat either it was kind of a pain reading them actually. i guess it was cuz i didnt expect harry to live and i wasnt ready to see an adult harry w/ children yet...this fluffy cheesy ending didnt go w/ the darkness of the book and i was prepared to see harry die especially after he used the reserection stone and saw all of his loved ones i just felt that he should be back w/ them and somehow still manage to defeat voldy...i just wanted to see him die as a hero does anyone else agree with me?? that seems like a 'harry potter' ending to me...
Teddy WASN'T a student, he was just there to say good-bye to Victoire.
all i can say is, wow. i have never cried harder in my entire life. i was literally sobbing for the last chapters of the book, and couldn't stop crying for like two hours after i had finished it. ron and hermione's first kiss had me bawling so hard that i couldn't read the pages through my tears. thank you jk rowling, for ending the series exactly how i always wished, and thank you mugglenet for being my favorite source for harry potter news EVER. it's been an amazing 10 years, and i will never forget any of it.
Ok. To all those who are complaining about not learning certain facts (like what Harry's parents did for a living, who did magic later in life, etc.), I have one question for you: if Jo hadn't mentioned that before the book came out, would you have cared? Think about how much background information never made it into the books (for example, the entire background of Dean Thomas). She created an entire world in her head, but due to the reality of writing books she just couldn't put it all in. And I for one thought the epilogue, while definitely not my favorite part of the book, was just right. We learn some about Harry, Ron, and Hermione's future (that they have remained close friends and found love and family). But more importantly, Jo reinforces the morals of the books through Harry's actions at the end. He has named his child after Dumbledore and Snape, which shows that he still loved Dumbledore and forgave Snape. Moreover, Harry has truly learned that it is our choices that define us, and he passes this on to Albus Severus in his conversation about the sorting. What's a bigger hint, though, is that Albus Severus has NO IDEA that his dad is famous....did you all catch that?!?! What does that tell you about Harry? He didn't become Headmaster or Minister or probably even an Auror. Harry didn't ever want to be famous, he just wanted to live a normal life, which is obviously what he's doing now. He also probably lived away from the spotlight, shielding his children from the story of his battle with Voldemort so they could grow up as he did, humble and modest once they got to Hogwarts. Sure, James must know by now about his dad, but Harry wanted to pass on the lessons he learned to his kids. She included the most important stuff in the epilogue. If she had included more, then fans would have just wished they could have had more and more details. There was no way to please everyone, but I think she did a brilliant job.
Eh, the epilogue leaves something to be wanted. And I think Voldemort's death was somewhat anti-climatic, but the plot twists were nice and a lot of questions were answered.
brilliance- sheer brilliance
Poor george, I'm afraid he might never be the same after losing Fred.. He might even not continue his joke shop. But on the other hand, he might, because it would be what fred wanted i think. P.s. Why would Ginny not name one of her kids Fred? I think it was very unsensitive of her to not name one of her kids after her own brother who died while helping to save the wizarding world..
I hope JKR has another interview with you guys... and that you guys can ask the questions that so many of us want to know! What jobs did Harry, Hermione, and Rone have? There was supposed to be somebody who performed magic late in life - and we never found out who that was! What's George doing now that Fred's gone? Maybe he and Lee Jordan are owners of the shop? (I'd hate to see George owning the shop alone!) Snape's Patronus and Boggart were supposed to be big clues to Book 7... well, we saw his Patronus, but what is his boggart? ...And wasn't the last word of the book supposed to be "scar"?
Wow, I had no idea that could cry so much while reading a book! I understand what Jo meant now that some people would loathe it...but not just for the deaths. She left many questions unanswered, which I'm sure many people will not be pleased with. However, Deathly Hallows was my personal favorite of the series, even though there are many mysteries left to solve. I mean, that's part of the beauty of Harry Potter, isn't it, that Jo has left something to discuss, so that the world of Harry will continue to live on. Anyways, AMAZING book! If you happen to look at this comments page Jo, thank you so much for giving us Harry. No one will ever be able to open children's minds to reading like you have done.
OH! MY! GOD! What a great book.... but i have to agree with everyone, the epilogue WAS cheesy. it was not too bad, but still::: what happens to everybody afterwards??? Why does she leave all those doors open??? So we can keep debating???? I just wish she'd extended the epilogue a little bit. But optherwise, it was an amazing book, an amazing experience and my favorite for sure! Dobby's death left me crying and I thought Kreacher was AMAZING! Loved it! (I think the person that does magic late in life is Merope Gaunt. i said that already in some forums. I think it makes sense....)
This long-time fan was more than satisfied. We have an ending that brought the series to a close in a way that made each and every book worthwhile. The motorcycle, the diary, the shrieking shack, Krum, Snape, Dumbledore...each book had to exist and contributed to this ending. I will re-read each one to enjoy how they all work together. Finally we can read the series like an outsider might - so that we can appreciate the insides. Some might say we never needed - say Lockhart - and could have had more insight on horcruxes earlier - but I say no... we are like Harry, we had to learn it for ourselves. There are so many themes that I get to teach my children through Harry's world. I cannot wait for them to grow and to give them the gift of JKR. And more than anything - I hope she writes something completely NEW - she is a geniuse. Lastly, I too wished for all the answers - but then I realized that the Occupations, late in life magic, if Neville married - these are not the big picture things - they are fan fiction. JKR exceeded all expectations. My friend and I were in 100% agreement - the entire book with a few exceptions all read like Chapter 28 from HBP - we could hardly breath! We laughed - we cried and we screamed! And when we read what Molly said - we were very dissapointed, until we thought about what we would do if Bellatrix was trying to kill our child, and then we agreed. I mean, my goodness - this was exceptional. LASTLY - GOOOOO Mugglenet! Thank you for filling in between the books. You were a friend when I needed answers.
I could go hours and hours about the book. but to sum it up: I had guessed or rather hoped for Sanpe's story to be what it turned out to be ever since book 3, but I didn't like his end, he could have died differently. Also, I felt horribly when Fred died, he was a twin, they were like one it was as though she had killed both George and Fred which was totally unfair 'cause she had already injured George's ear. Dudley's farewell was awesome, absolutely loved it. But Lupin and Tonks! How could she make little Teddy an orphan? And how come it didn't come in the epilogue that Teddy lived with Harry and Ginny? He was Harry's Godson! Also it's kind of exasperating that until chaper 15 or so nothing relevant happens. What was the point on the trio saving Draco twice if he did not redeemed himself? Dumbledore's heirlooms were pretty interesting though, (anyone notice that we had to make the Deathly Hallows simbol when we did our last Wombat?) but remember book one? Everything fitted perfectly on the firsts books and somehow it didn't feel the same. Harry a Horcrux I dreaded the idea from the very beginning and i dread it now. Also it was kind of confusing that about his blood, how on earth could Harry kill him if they had the same magic protecting both of them? At least it explains Dumbledore's look of triumph in book four. Anyway, I really thought Harry should have died, it would have been a much more impressive ending than the "lived happily ever after" though the idea of Ginny and him getting married was cute too. Hogwarts batle was totally great, no critics there, but I believe that if JKR had had planned the horcruxes during all these years she could have given a bit more information about Ravenclaw. I agree with everyone who says the epilogue was really not worth it. I wanted to know everything, did Hermione succed in the SPEW? What did harry became? and Ron? And all the others? What happened to the dursleys? What happened to hogwarts? ...
wow. that book was amazing. if only we could've learned more about the Veil, though. i really wanted to see more of that. i also wish we could've learned more about everyone in the epilogue, like their jobs and stuff. this book is definitally my favorite in the series.
I really thought this book was good. The epilogue really surprised me, because I thought we were going to find out what happens to ALL the characters, not just the Trio + Ginny. Of course, after the number of characters she killed off, their weren't to many people to write about! Book was great, I really loved Harry trying to decide between the Halows or Horcruxes. Poor Dobby!
I can't stop crying.
AmberJane: There were a few homages to fan sites that as I was reading had a chuckle over. The one that was most blatant was Peeves' song after Voldemort dies-- "Voldy's gone moldy" .... There was a time when Jo commented about folks on the fan sites calling Voldemort "Voldy"...and now she used it in the book. There were about 2 or 3 others, but I don't remember the exact page and quote--again, I just remember thinking "haha--that's from the fan sites"
Oh my gosh! that was the best book ever! did any one else bawl their heads off when they were done reading? jo totally outdid herself!
I'm really really sad that Lupin, Tonks, Fred, and Dobby died. What will George do without him!?!?! And Lupin and Tonks, they just had a baby!!!!!! D: Who raised him? And Dobby... :( I never cried in any other book, but i was sobbing hysterically for this one... :(
This book was amazing... I thought that the epilogue was the perfect ending... Harry had such and awfull childhood that he deserves a happy adult life... I cried when Hermione Kissed Ron I was so excited and I cried for at least 10 mins when Dobby died... and I sobbed when Fred died and when Harry was talking to His parents and Lupin it was tragic. I loved this book so much It was so beautiful. I love how he got to have his talk with Dumbledore in the end. So amazing. I think that JK Rowling has outdone herself and that anyone who opposes her should go write there own 7 book series and see how it turns out.
It was wonderfully amazing!!!! Fantastic, indescribable, loooved it, best book ever... lol it was really good. I love books that have alot of excitement, emotion, and adventure, and this book definetely had it all. I like me a good mystery too, which this book had. And I especially like books where the evil guy pops up alot, which, again, this book has. I have to admit I was disappointed because it didnt answer all of the questions, but thats ok. I really liked the epilogue, but it disappointed me cuz I wanted to see what house Albus got into. Oh well. Amazing and wonderful.
it would have been good to know what happen to all the important character in the epilogue, some are not mentionned (luna, dean, seamus, the current teachers at hogwarts (even if we can guess they are dead or retired), the weasley apart ron and ginny (whose fate don't need an epilogue as we all could have guess their fate) and some others. I would have appreciate to know who are the new hogwarts headmaster, teachers, the new minister of magic and the muggle side of the end of the war. but apart that, the book was great. ah last thing, the deathly hallows is really a big excuse for jkr to make harry survive lol , but in fact i think it is better this way. the death of 3 great characters at the end of the book was, i think, not necessary, especially tonks.
I think the Harry Potter community is happy with the ending, especially Harry surviving and finally marrying the love of his live Ginny and having Ron and Hermione get together as well. Book was long in places but I couldn't stop turning the pages once the Hogwarts action started. I would love to see Neville's grandmother in the movie with her hat waving wildly dueling with Lucius or Greyback. Really thought that Snape was good and sad to see him die like he did. Really didn't need to kill off colin creevy and appreciated the Kings Cross scene even though it was a bit out there. We can critize all we want but bottom line is it is Jo's imagination and her story that we bought into and we need to accept that and appreciate the wonderful world of Harry that we have had over the last 10 years. I would REALLY like them to film both 6 & 7 at the same time (Lord of the rings style) and then release them a yr. apart.
I'm a little confused after rereading a few parts. If the only horcruxes that Voldemort created were destroyed by Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore and Neville. how was Voldemort in the flesh? I always assumed Quirrel discovered a horcrux and so did Peter in order for Voldemort to come back at all. Can anyone explain this.
i really loved the book... i thought that jkr perfectly tied in most of the little tidbits and characters from way back.. i know there are a good amount of unanswered questions, but honestly, what book DOESNT have that?! i mean i think it was brilliant the way she was able to tie in SO much from the other books, like so many LITTLE things..for instance, its only mentioned once or twice in other books that dumbledore battled grindelwald (hinted really in the first book when harry reads the chocolate frog), and hints here and there relate to snape's true being, and other things to harry being a horcrux... i think JKR did it perfectly and although i expected both voldie AND harry to die and was a bit saddened that the epilogue was a little sappy... JKR did a fine job on it... i never want it to end!!! never!! im soo extremely sad it's over, like i really feel i will cry months from now not on who died but that it is actually done with... she was really what helped me get through the ages--- and she taught us so many morals! i'm in college now and ill never be able to just throw away my child or teenage years because that was all harry potter... we will never forget.
Okay, so I have to post. I actually finished the book Saturday night after going to a midnight party to get it. First off, I think Tonks dad was the one who did magic because he is suppose to be a muggle! Remember at the beginning of the book Narcissa and Belletrix telling Voltmore that they hadn't talked to her since she married the muggle. BUT Ted told Harry that he mended his ribs and regrew his tooth. So he must be doing magic now. And another thing I think is...Harry's aunt told harry that she knew about the magical world from Lily and that freak boy she hung around. I always thought that ws Harry's dad!! But it was Snape!! Wow. And Voldermort and Harry were related, so Harry was part of the Slytherin line. Remember there were three brothers that had the stone, the cloak and the wand. Well Voldermorts uncle had the stone and Harry's dad had the cloak! So they were related after all. And you guys are right the last chapter was terrible. It didn't sound as if she wrote it at all. I hope she would at least come out with one more book to explain away some of the questions that she left lingering. But I do feel the epilogue did give a way into another story. I think Harry's son James would be an excellent choice for a new adventure. One more thing...Why didn't anyone name their son after Sirius? James Sirius would have been a great name. And Ron should be shot for not naming his after Fred. I think the thing with Snape was totally awesome.
I'm upset with the epilogue i wish there was more
I don't know why a lot of you thought the epilogue was weak. I thought it brilliant. Favorite of the series. What is better closure than Harry being able to have a normal life it's all he's ever wanted, and I'm glad JK gave it to him. Maybe it was written for us older fans.
AMAZING. best book ever! i loved the epilogue it was great. harry/ginny and ron/hermione all the way. loved it
