The book was good but JKR said that Harry's eyes would be a major plot point for Book 7, but I didn't catch that. The only part I saw was when Snape was all "look...at...me..." (which was sad, but not THAT important). And who did magic late in life? But ignoring the unanswered questions, it was a great book. And I'm not ashamed to admit it: when I read that chapter where Harry saw his parents and we all thought he was going to die, I broke down sobbing and crying. And I had to stop reading because I was getting the book wet. :-)
What did we not find out that Rowling promised we would? I wanted to put this question to the top since many keep asking: "Who was the person who did magic later in life?". I thought the book was GREAT. Especially the Snape/Dumbeldore storyline. Rowling did a wonderful job putting all the backstories together. I understand and sort of agree that the "19 years later" chapter being corny but I think it would have been too much if she talked about how sad George is without Fred (it would take away from his humorous character lines), how Dorsleys ened up, etc. If Rowling had answered all these questions, how would anyone write fanfiction?! I think it's good she left it up to out imaginations. I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who cried as Harry was walking to the Forbidden Forest. For those who have said "one word- disappointed" why were you disapointed with the book?
I find it interesting to hear the different perspectives on Deathly Hallows. I think age and experiences in life defiantly affect our views. The Harry Potter series provides an escape to another world when we need it. I was afraid to read this book, I had my own hopes for it's ending. I was not disappointed. I am, however, still feeling the pain of Fred's death in particular. I'm sure that's the mom in me. I love what happened with Snapes's character and am pleased that Harry and Ginny named their son Albus Severus. I'm so glad that Harry Potter came to J.K. Rowling and that she shared him with the world. Perhaps it's my age, but I loved the epilogue. If Jo answers any questions I wish we could know where everyone is 19 years later.
Oh gosh. It was the best yet. But I cried. A lot. Like, loads of tears, until my face hurt. =[ Epilogue... ummmm...... not as great as the rest of the book. By far. She really didn't have an mercy for any of her characters. And a lot of people who didn't need to die died. WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL?!?! That annoyed me. She just dropped that. But, okay.... I need some comfert. It's all over... It's all done... what are we going to do? Is everyone like me? Do you feel like you just lost your best friend?
this was definitely my favorite!!! i agree that the epilogue was a little disappointing but since i was mostly interested in what happened to ron and hermione (yeah!) it was still awesome!!!
My first reaction is that J.K.Rowling must have read "The Golden Bough" by Sir James Frazer. It is a book about cultural anthropology that deals with many folklores and traditions. In Book 6, the idea of the horcruxes apparently comes from the external soul in the Frazer book. (http://en.wikisource.org /wiki/The_Golden_Bough/Th e_External_Soul_in_Folk-T ales) In Book 7, the idea of the Elder Wand comes from the Frazer Book as well. (http://en.wikisource.org /wiki/The_Golden_Bough/Th e_Golden_Bough) There is a certain priest in Italy that becomes the priest by killing his predecessor after picking a golden bough from a magical tree. His duty becomes guarding this tree to prevent anyone else from picking another bough. When he becomes feeble, there must be a successor that manages to pick the bough in order to win the right to duel the old priest and kill him eventually. Then a new circle begins. Frazer argues that the so-called golden bough is a holy plant worshiped widely called mistletoe. Luna mentions mistletoe before. On the doorsign of the house Xeno Lovegood, it also says "pick your own mistletoe." A hint can't be clearer. By the way, Frazer gets the idea of golden bough from "The Aeneid," written by Virgil. Aeneas, the protagonist, picks the Golden Bough and goes to the underworld to meet the dead people, just like the function of the Resurrection Stone. Later Aeneas sees the Shield of Prophecy, which discloses to him the grand future of Rome empire, which is like the Prophecy in the Minister of Mystery. Rowling is indeed well read.
does anyone know where the names rosie and hugo came from? and i would really have liked to know what became of kreacher, and the dursleys. nice change in dudley in their last meeting though. and what about luna..i would have liked to know what happened to her later on. sad for george when fred died, would have liked to see his emotions. anyway, i think that dean had a pretty large part in this book, that was a little unexpected, don't you think? ROCK ON HARRY POTTER!
that was the best book. great way to end. jk is so exceptional and talented i envy her! i thought i'd be distraught tht its all over but somehow she has a way of ending it perfectly and i'm beyond satisfied.(though i am a tiny bit upset). can't wait till she releases another book. but one question.....why did regulus black take the horcrux if he was a voldemort supporter????what did he have against voldemort? and wen hermione leaks the secret to yaxley about grimmauld place how can he tell other death eaters cos he isnt a secret keeper he's just bin told the secret if you get me!?!
**ok can someone PLEASE explain one thing to me?? i absolutely LOOOOOVED the book and thought it was brilliantly written, but i'm so confused with the whole Elder Wand thing at the end when Harry said "the true master of the Elder Wand was Draco Malfoy" - ok so Draco disarmed Dumbledore at the end of the 6th, but he never took his wand, it was buried with Dumbledore - so how does that make him the master? ... and then Harry proceeds to say "does the wand in your hand know its last master was Disarmed? Because if it does, I am the true master of the Elder Wand" - but WHY? I don't get it....I know Harry was using Draco's wand, but Voldemort had Dumbledore's...I'm just so confused! can someone PLEASE EXPLAIN? (PS - HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DAN RADCLIFFE!)
I loved it. I can honestly say I am not longing for another Harry Potter book, Rowling ended it amazingly. I loved the background & the outcome of snape's loyalty. It was terrible though that harry didn't have a chance to talk to him about it before he died. The last chapter is exactly what it should have been. Harry defeated Voldemort. The way it should have been. But without actually killing him. He didn't understand the magic of the Elder Wand & therefor was the cause of his death. When Voldemort crumpled It made me cheer & clap. It was absolutely perfect. The epilogue, I thought, was also very well done. It gave us enough to let us know that "all was well" & that everyone was happy. But not enough to make it boring or drag it out. I thought the children's names were also good. My favorite moment out of all 7 books is when harry kneels down and says "Albus Severus. You were named after 2 hogwarts headmasters. One of which was in Slytherin and he was the bravest man I ever knew" This was also the part that made me break down crying. It was so unexpected but so perfect at the same time. Yes, Rowling did leave some questions unanswered but can any of us say we do not know the whole story? we know everything we need to know to understand. This was one of the best books I have ever read. It made me laugh, cry, cheer, and literally stand up and celebrate. All of the books will surely go down in history as 7 of the best novels ever written. Rowling is absolutely brilliant.
I LOVED EVERY MOMENT I WAS READING IT!!!!! i even loved the epilouge it was totally cool (contrary to popular thought) i am also soooooooooooooooooooooooo depressed. RIP Remus,Tonks and Fred!!!!!
Absolutely horrible. The epilogue was totally useless, Dumbledore's past was long and unnecessary, and the quest Harry, Hermione, and Ron took was far too long. She cut off the end and it was far too annoying. It seemed to me like she was trying to do a Sopranos spinoff, but it didn't quite work out. The Deathly Hallows seemed completely of and I thought she could have done a faaaaar better job.
So did Harry lose certain powers when Voldemort "killed" him? Can he still speak Parslemouth? We really don't know which powers were transferred initially, but might he have retained these powers? Any clues?
Did anyone else find the chapter on Snape (Prince's Tales) really sad? I cried almost through it all. It made me really pity Snape and how he died, looking into Harrys eyes (the same as Lily, his love). I though Harrys scar would of been gone though, since the horcrux was no longer in him. I also think that maybe Luna and Dean end up together? They went through some troubled times together and before the fight Dean says to Luna 'here luna' and holds out his hand (something like that)
Dont waste your remorse on sevEARus snape! I'll never forgive you! NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!! LONG LIVE GRIPHOOK!
Firstly...I loved the book! Could not have ended any other way...totally unpredictable! I LOVED that Dumbledore wasn't infallible....made him human for a change and it made his obvious relief that Harry survived everything that more meaningful. But while the saga's last installment got off to a rocketting begining, I found myself dozing off after a while. My sister actually came down from her room to ask if we were reading the correct book. "Does this feel right?"..."No...I feel like I am reading a bad 10th grader's fanfiction." But after page 404 US edition the ball got rolling and never stopped. I had decided to give it another 50 pages before taking a nap, but after reading the words "Deathly Hallows" at the end of the chapter I was in for the long haul and couldn't put it down. Dobby's death and Harry's walk to his own death were perhaps some of the saddest writing I have ever read....a half tissue box each, and the headache to follow. While the epilogue didn't reveal everything, or most anything at all, it did what it was meant to do: Reveal that life went on and that Harry finally got what he had always wanted and never dreamed of having....family.
what a great book i did not like the ending.it seems like she rushed the ending .its not like she was going over what she normally rights cause to be honest it wasnt that big.JK also didnt mention the locked room in the department of mysteries i was really looking forward to reading more about that. i thought i was great that you didnt know who was going to die cause thats what war is really like. but i still its the best book drawn with poa. well done jk you deserve all the money you get from this book
Sheer genius. Truly. I finished it on the 21st (p.m.) and have kind of had a lump in my throat ever since. I'm in the middle of my second read and I'm picking up things I missed before. I'm just so grateful for the rich enjoyment these books have brought me. I was particularly moved by Kreacher's tale, Snape's story, Harry's death march and Hedwig and Dobby's deaths. A lifetime of thanks to the master, JKR!
Just one word: AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ok, a couple more words: im so sad fred died! and tonks and lupin too! :( but harry, ron, and hermione lived!!!!!! After i read that book i couldnt stop smiling! it just had such a happy ending!!!!!!!!! :D I LOVE THAT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!
WOW! snape never really had to die for voldemort to use the wand b/c i wouldve loved if draco had also died. but mad-eye, fred, dobby, ted tonks, nymphadora, lupin, bathilda ,the minister, crevvey, and all others who died and were innocent ......................... ..............r.i.p.
I just want to say this: For the past nine years, Harry Potter has been a huge part of my life. Every sentence, every page, every novel, every priceless moment. This series, this literary amazement, has changed my life and touched my heart. The characters have become so dear to me and I can say I'm satisfied with what Jo has given us for the last book, because Harry, the character I love above all others in any other book that I have ever read, survived in the most fantastic way he possibly could've. Happy. LONG LIVE HARRY POTTER
luved it it was the best i cant beleive fred, lupin, nd tonks r dead tho:(:( i cried during those parts but i do wanna know who does magic late in life??/
OH MY GOD this book made me laugh and cry and i was always suprised! I cried soo many times cos i thought hagrid died!! TWICE.................... ... RIP FRED TONKS LUPIN HEDWIG DOBBY:( SNAPE! COLIN MAD-EYE MOODY! But i was a little disapointed by the way it ended i expected that harry would die ahh welll............ Who was the person who couldnt do magic then could in this book???? Overall a good book i loved the book.....i was like the first person in an Australian bookstore to get my book! i read in 10 hours
This was hands down the best book in the series. Unbelievable!Fabulous stuff. My absolute favorite scene was when Molly attacked Bellatrix. That goes down as the best scene in the entire series for me. She was awesome in answering all of our questions, getting all the details down, without dragging it on...it was excellent. I was a little disappointed/mislead about the whole Deathly Hallows thing and I'm not really sure why she introduced them at all. They were really an unnecessary sideline to the rest of the story. The whole "Harry is a horcrux" thing was also a little silly, but I thought it was awesome how Harry's blood that was taken to resurrect Voldemort, was what ended up saving him in the end. And then that Harry gave his life for everyone else the way his mother had - it protected everyone against Voldemort's spells - FABULOUS!!! I wish that Dobby didn't have to die, and Colin Creevy's death seemed a little unnecessary, but all in all - GREAT STUFF!
omg! it was great! once i started reading it i didn't put it down! i was a little confused about one thing though when lupin and tonks died i thought that ment that as ted's godfather, harry ended up w/ him... but it sounded like ted only visits. i mean granted he is 19 now but till they made it sound like he never lived w/ harry at all... i guess i missed something
I deeply respect Jo for giving us this amazing book. Of course I, also, was not satisfied with EVerything -- sadly the epilogue for one thing, though sweet and final, did not have information on most of the main characters or the progress of the wizarding world's stands(however i did appreciate the mention of cars popular among magical population) -- but those things matter so little because the book in general is wonderful! So many layers and it's clear how the characters have grown (say Neville! or Ron with more confidence or Harry with new values, understanding, wisdom). My favourite scene is Ron and Harry in the forest, it was so emotional! Actually the King's Cross and Snape's memories did it to me as strongly... Or The War.! So it's obviously a most fantastic book and my favourite of the set!
I definately loved it, as my first reaction. I hated that the last chapter(ninteen years later) didn't give us enough info. I would really have liked to find out the jobs of Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione. It disapointed me a little that we never found out what Lily and James did as an ocupation. I cryed when Fred died, and when Dobby died. I was really upset that Hedwig was killed, was that really needed? And wouldn't Teddy be 18, why was he at the station if he already graduated? To see Victoire? I am not sure. There were a few more things, but I can't think of them now.
Overall, the book was amazing, though I didn't like the epilogue. It was so obvious that Harry and Ginny would be married, and Ron and Hermione. I wish they could have gone on to say what each person became. Did Harry become the Auror he wanted to be? What about the other three? Did George keep the joke shop open after Fred's death? It left too many open questions, in my mind.
Thank you JK for keeping Hagrid safe. It wouldn't be Hogwarts without Hargrid. Best line: Dumbledore's response to Harry's question - "is it all in my head or is it real?" "Of course it's all in your head, but that doesn't make it any less real." (Don't have the book in front of me at the moment, so may be slightly paraphrased.) Mourning the end of the series, but so thankful that JK created a world I can escape to when I'm sitting in the dentist chair or when I am having a bad day.
I mean, its not about us sticking with harry till the very end... is HIM sticking to all of us till the very end... I have no words for the book. I can only say that the epilogue was a bit dissapointing, but in the other hand jk Rowlings took me through the story like she never had.. and she really got me thinkin that harry was dead... I loved it... but of course taht will never be enough
it wasn't as good as i thought it would be. i'm glad that harry and ginny got married and that ron and hermione got together! i was very cinfused in parts of it...but it was a wonderful book! it wasn't the best one though...but i still loved it!
LOVED IT. Favourite in the entire series. But.. So. Fricking. Depressing. O.O why DOBBY?! -sobs-
Could someone please explain the whole wand thing i didn't get it. About how malfoy was supposed to be the one with the elder wand i don't understand it. The ending was a crapshoot i didn't care much for this book it just took forever to read with all the boring chapters in it i swear you could have read bout 5 chapters and had the whole book figured out. I want to pose another q? has anyone noticed that only harry, and death eaters, cedric and i think ginny have ever SEEN voldemort? I think it is curious
I though the middle lagged, kept having to reread lines from lack of concentration, but the beginning and end were spectacular and action-packed and exciting and a breeze to read.
NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU B*TCH!!! Best.line.eve r.written. I love Mrs. Weasley... now we've seen her skill, I wonder if she made that clock???
The epilogue was a bit cheesy and it blocked a lot of potential fanfiction.
I absolutely loved this book, its the best in the series by far! I cant believe who she killed off...im glad it wasnt Harry Hermione or Ron though. I was devastated when he saw Fred's Lupins and Tonks bodies in the great hall! I wanted to know who else died though... like Lavendar Parvati and that! But i guess we wont no. I also wanted to see what become of the rest of the Weasleys...e.g. how george coped without fred! All in all the book was excellently written.
It the best book by far and i was not disapointed at all, it was fan-freakin-tastic!! I cried when i read about dobby, fred, tonks, and lupins deaths. JK is the best author and i hope she does another series like this one soon. Long Live Harry Potter!!!
Oh, why did life have to be so cruel for Snape!? Why did Lupin and Tonks have to die? WAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!! The beautiful thing about this book is that Harry is left with a respect for Snape. I have one problem, though; She did not explain if Harry bacame an Auror.
the epilouge was a dissapointmet, and the girl that teddy was snogging...was she like a ron/hermione kid??? i was so bloody confused. and then we hear about that albus kid...is he harry's fav. kid or something? other than that i thought it was a great book...yet it seemed like we had one horcrux forever, and all of a sudden we find and destroy the rest...a bit rushed in my opinion. then ron goes and speaks parseltounge...that confused the hell out of me. overall my fav. book of the series!
I found it to be amazing because I don't think I was thinking too much into what she said through the years which seemed to disappoint some fans because it didn't appear in the book. I thought it was well written with lots of surprises, sad moments, and the good old laughing parts. I loved the history of Dumbledore! Also Snape's past and his character was a twist that made him even better. Harry really is a fascinating character and all the choices he made makes him quite a wise and caring boy. The epilogue was cute and I loved that it was at King's Cross station --the atmosphere of the place brought good memories of Harry's first time there. It's been awesome years with Harry Potter and I just hope it doesn't fade any time soon or in lets say 20 years to come haha.
The book was an adrenaline rush from the get go. That was cool. But I agree with previous comments that the epilogue was lame. What happened to Umbridge, or Kreacher and 12 Grimmauld Place? If there was one person who needed to die a really horrible death, it was Umbridge, or at least forced to live the remainder of her days as a muggle, like Mrs. Figg. Did the trio ever take their N.E.W.Ts? What jobs did they eventually get? What about the veil? I was hoping these would get more explanations. Perhaps in time, JKR will write something about them.
I absolutely loved it!!! I couldn't stop crying for hours after I finished it. I am truly mourning the end of the series. I'm kind of glad that she didn't answer every question I had, now I can keep on debating, wondering and imagining.
This book was fantastic!! Everything was suspenseful and exciting throughout. I'm extremely happy Harry survived, but sad for all the people that died, especially Snape (especially since he was good, as I expected). I wish the epilogue had talked about more people.... like George, Dean, Seamus, Luna and about how they ended up living, but i do think this was the best book out the entire series. After finishing this book, I realized, finally, that this was the last Harry Potter book. Although I was sad the series was finished, I knew that there was always going to be a place for Harry in my heart!! Great job JK Rowling!!
favorite part= the AWKWARD percy moment. fleur: soooooo... remus! hows the kid?! lupin: huh? oh. OH. uuuh he's uh, awsome super awsome, we, uh - weasleys: *general awkwardness* lupin: (really loudly) Yeah, REALLY GREAT. LOOK, I HAVE A PICTURE! fleur: (equally loudly) WOW, THAT'S PRETTY AWSOME! WHICH I THINK YOU ALREADY MENTIONED! lupin: IN FACT I DID, BUT YOUR REITERATION OF MY EARLIER POINT IS STILL APROPRIATE! percy: (capslock x a billion) I AM A FOOOOOOOOL!!!!! lupin: *drops picture and starts whistling as if he can't hear anything else going on around him* *fleur joins in* plus other favorite quote(s): molly: you BIATCH! *generally pwns* and ron: oh, that's just me. i'm extremely famous. (i don't know why but i def pissed myself laughing here. i cried (well sort of) (i cried inside) when fred/lupin/tonks died. Lupin was so freaking happy to be a daddy! and they were so freaking in love! plus also i bet george is gonna lose his mindx1000000. because they were basically one person. so yeah. bon job, jkr. you win. for reals.
this book was the most wonderful book ever. I loved every second i read
i loved the book! it was my favorite! i didnt really like the epilogue. i wanted more. i think we all knew ron and hermione(yay!) and harry and genny would end up together. i dont like how genny and harry named their kids, it was kinda wierd. im sad that fred died, and i dont like that she killed lupin and tonks off right after they had the baby. and did she have to kill off hedwig? im sooo sad she isnt going to write more of them. other than those few things i loved the book! it was the best.
Excellent Book Couldn't Ron be the one who 'got magic' he never had before...speaking Parseltongue? What happened to Snape's admonition to 'cast spells without speech' at the end of the last book. That's realy the only thing I was looking for.
i think she should of made this the longest book. the us version was only like 606 or something. and the us version of OOTP was like 760 (around there). if she made it longer she could of explained so much more. k and the wand thing i found very confusing too. try re reading it (you also need to re read what Ollivander told Harry at Bill&Fleurs) and it should make sense.
Tom Tonks can't be the one who does magic later in life - In OOtP on page 113 it says he is "Muggle Born" (Like Hermione) not that he is a muggle. How cool was it to see Draco had a son and went on with his life? He recovered from the misguided and foolish decisions he made so young in life. Thank God Emerson created this web site so that we could have these discussions!!! Harry and Voldemort distantly related through the Pervells??? Hmmm...going to have to do some research on that one....
