i definitely think this was the best book in the series. The epilogue could've been better but for all the people who are saying that it was fanfiction-ish, it's probably because we were so used to reading them. Also, about the whole "pointless death" thing, all I have to say is that it's WAR... not every death is going to be such an important death to move the story along or motivate Harry. Sometimes innocent bystanders are gonna die. I do hope that JKR updates the site and answers some of our questions though--especially now that it's over she can speak freely.
I LOVED IT! I always knew that Snape was gonna turn out to be good. The whole thing about him loving Lily was so heart-breaking. And Kreacher, becoming all nice!! Great job, JK only you could make me loathe a character, and then turn my feelings around and think of him as one of the great heroes of the series. =]. Overall, magnificent book. My new favorite of the series, by far. And little Albus Severus, so cute!
My favourite book EVER! It was so brilliant how she had all of this planned from book one. If I ever didn't think of her as the world's greatest author, I just changed my mind. Every detail of it was so perfect. I was really hoping that Snape would be evil, and I hated his character, but now I think he's my favourite. I almost cried when Harry named his second son after him and said he was the bravest wizard.
loved it...absolutely loved it..couldnt stop crying when the resurrection stone brought his parents back...the story was an abosolute thrill..best in the series and very adult
Oh wow, I can't belive it's over! And I can't belive how many times I cried during this book. I must say, the chapter about Snape has to be the best chapter in the entire book, if not series. I had always (well since OotP) thought that Snape had some feelings thowards Lily, but that he loved her from a distance, so to say. I had no idea that they were friends. And Albus Severus. How beautiful. I knew the moment that George was hurt, that he would not be killed, and I therefor didn't think that Fred would die either (we had heard that two people would be killed instead of one, who was originally going to die, so I assumed that the two would be a pair of some sort), and that was just so shocking to me, and so very sad, seeing as Fred and George have always been among my favourite characters. Percy's return, Kreacher's sweetness, what Ron said that made Hermione kiss him (about the house elfs), Mrs Weasley killing Bellatrix, Neville's rockin' change and his grams and much more were just so great. They were small things, but still great. The deaths were painfull, all of them (eventhough we hadn't learded about Snape being good or bad yet, and it did infact seem that he was bad, there was a sadness in me when he died. Also the death of Hedwig hurt, and what happened to her body). The epilogue was, at times confusing, until you sort of learnt who was who, and like I said, Albus Severus, how great. I was a bit surprised though, that none of the children (both Ron's and Ginny's) were named after Fred, but perhaps George had named one of his children after him, but it would have been nice to know. I would also have liked to hear what happened to some of the other characters. On the subject of who Ted is kissing; It says in the book that it is their (the childrens) cousin. This making it clear that Victoire is Bill and Fleur's daughter.
I though it was brilliant. I used to favor GoF, but now I like DH. Well worth the wait! Sure, somethings went amiss, but it was another spectacular book.
Overall, I thought it was a GREAT book, and my disapointments are really only one. I thought the ending was too sudden. It was like "Big Battle/Voldy Dies/Epilogue". There was no follow up with how the various deaths affected people, nor did JK go on to say what the survivors did later in life. Sure we get an Epilogue with some of the survivors, but what about the others? That was my only gripe. Rumor mill has it that JK will be penning "Hogwarts: A History", and that will cover all the follow up info. While pretty cool, I think a book should stand on it's own, and not rely on an external encyclopedia for the follow up. I felt DH needed one more chapter in between the end and the Epilogue. Much like we see Harry's reaction and burial of Dobby. I wanted to see that kind of stuff from others after the big battle. Favorite Parts: -Madam Sprout and Neville running past Harry, carrying pots and wearing earmuffs, and Neville yelling back over his shoulder "We're tossing Mandrakes over the wall! They won't like that!" -The fact that the Order chastens Harry about using stunning spells and Expelliarmus in fights to the death. Reflected later on when it seems everyone and their brother is using Unforgivables. McGonagall's use was BRILLIANT, and totally caught me by suprise. -Harry re-entering the Room of Requirement, and seeing dozens of old Hogwarts alumni in there. Oliver Wood, Angelina, etc. On of the many "Oh hell yeah, it's ass-kicking time!" in the book for me. -Percy Weasley's return. Another "w00t w00t!" moment. Things that made me go "WTF?!" -Ron just "happened" to speak Parceltongue correctly to get into the Chamber of Secrets? He just "happened" to recall EXACTLY what Harry sounded like from FIVE YEARS EARLIER?!
IT WAS AMAZING! There's no better book in the world. There were so many twists & turns, it had everything that a book needs. Every scene was great. I love how Ron has gotten so protective over Hermione, it was so sweet. Being a Ravenclaw, I got so excited to see how to get into the common room, and I REALLY love the Gray Lady, she's awesome! My favorite thing about this book was how all of Hogwarts (students & teachers & creatures) supported Harry until the end, no matter how much their lives were in danger. "NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU girl!" was the best line ever, lol. Even though SO much was left unanswered I liked the epilogue. I felt so happy for Harry, that he can now live happily in peace. I'm sure Jo will give us anwers later. I loved this book!
The story itself definitely exceeded my expectations. I had no problem with the epilogue. And as for any unanswered questions, I don't see anything wrong with using your imagination. That's what a good story is for.
I was rather disapointed with the epilogue. I was expecting Her to sum up more of the characters and questions. WHY WAS HERMIONE'S MIDDLE NAME CHANGED FROM JEAN TO JANE?!? sorry but that was really annoying me
it was REALLY good and all but I'm disappointed that she didn't clear up EVERYTHING, and the epilogue was disappointing (we never found out what Harry does!). but other than that, great book!
Wow, seems like some people did not like the epilogue much. I know I didn't.
I cant believe it is over, I guess i have to go and grow up now;) J.K did an amazing job of surprizing us and making us all happy. I wish i knew what harry ended up doing as a career. He would have made one hell of a Deffense Against the Dark Arts teacher. Any one else think that Arthur Weasly should have been next minister of magic? Does anybody else think that Victorie is Bill and Fluers daugher? Severus Snape= Pursues Evans
I felt that this was the best of the books, JK had a lot of lose ends to wrap up and most of them were answered. The fact that Harry was a horcrux was an obvious element but not that he would be able to return. For me the epilogue opens up so many possibilities for future stories it is untrue, some have been mentioned here already. What happens in the 19 years, we know about some of them but not others? What will happen with the next Generation? I am looking forward to seeing the resulting Fan Fiction that comes out of this book.
about the pages:if you include EVERY SINGLE PAGE, FROM THE TITLE PAGE TO THE BLANK PAGES AT THE END, THE TOTAL IS 784! wow, they tricked everyone. I think i might change my name to dobbyRIP
okay so did she EVER say how you become a ghost??? i think not!!! and i think it was ron who performed magic (beyond his ability) when he spoke parseltongue!
the book was ABSOLUTELY WONDERFULLY AMAZING!!! I LOVED IT!!!! Probably my favorite book out of the series..but its hard to tell..this one isnt really comparable to the others because its so different and its the last...gosh I wish it weren't. And why do people have such problems with the epilogue?! I loved it!! It was so sweet and cute and exactly what I would've wanted for Harry in the future...aww little Albus Severus! people who say its corny, you just need to get a life..why dont you like happy endings?? Although I loved everything she did write..I wish some other questions were answered..such as what did Harry's parents do for a living, and what do Harry, Ron, Hermione and Ginny do for a living when they are older, how's the rest of the characters...the rest of the Weasleys, Luna, the Dursleys!! what happened to them..i thought they were supposed to have a bigger role..a little dissapointed with that! who was the character who was supposed to perform magic later in life. the deaths were very sad and depressing..Fred's crushed me the most...but I was just so relieved that the trio and Ginny made it through. I was so scared one of them would die...so I'm happy that way. once Wormtail was killed I pretty much figured Lupin would die because all the mauraders would have to go kind of thing. I loved how we saw Dumbledore at the end with Harry at Kings Cross..it made me happy! OMGosh I can't believe its over!! I have post-Potter depression...I really hope she gives us that encyclopedia and answers our questions!!
the first few chapters were great, especially the chase scene with the order and the death eaters. I can't believe all the people who died!!!! It was an absolute bloodbath....I cant say I was too surprised. I thought the veil would come more into play than it did. I loved the story about the Hallows though and how they came in to play...I think in my heart I knew how it was going to end. I figured something would happen to Harry, at least a brush with near death, which it did, but I was so glad he didn't die. I knew voldy would die...he had to die, or a lot of people would have been extremely pissed off. And I KNEW Snape loved Lily....ha. All in all I think Jo did a fabulous job, and although I would have liked to see a little more to the epilogue on some of the other characters, it was well done. I felt a little numb after I finished the book though....not happy or sad, not at peace, or restless...more just the thought of "huh....well, I guess that's it".
I still don't know who did magic later in life. I'm also not sure if she mentioned the importance of Harry having Lily's eyes. The epilogue left very much to be wanted. I also noticed a mistake. Teddy was born before the big battle with Lord Voldemort. However, in the epilogue, he is on the Hogwarts Express. As the epilogue was 19 years later, shouldn't Teddy have been 19 and well out of school? The Deathly Hallows was a far cry different from the previous 6 books, but I think it ended rather nicely. I had really hoped that JK Rowling would not succumb to the cliches of Harry being a Horcrux and Snape loving Lily. Those were terribly predictable. In the end, though, I was glad to see Neville become a great atribute. I always liked him. He just needed to grow into himself, for lack of a better phrase. I was really excited about the seen at the Lovegood's house. That was very well played. I'm also glad that Kreacher turned around and Snape turned out to be good. I never had a doubt in my heart. I KNEW that Dumbledore and Snape had planned Dumbledore's death. I just KNEW it!
In memory of Hedwig, Alastor Moody, Dobby the Free Elf, Colin Creevey, Nymphadora Tonks, Severus Snape, Fred Weasley, and Remus Lupin. Love conquers all. Like most people, I was rather disappointed with the epilogue, but overall, I was completely blown away. Merlin's saggy left WHAT? That was great. The final battle at Hogwarts was amazing. If anyone else had their socks rocked off by Minerva McGonagall and Kreacher, please speak up. xD There were several unanswered questions, but I'm not too fussed about it. I'm happy with what we got. I wouldn't say it would be impossible, but I imagine it would be immensely difficult to answer every single question and tie up every single loose end in one book. There was simply too much to fit, and I think we should be glad for what we got. Any other queries we have will be quelled in interviews and perhaps the encyclopedia. I must say, though, I think it's really funny how everyone seems really shocked about things that they saw coming anyways. I'll admit I was. xD And I don't think I'm the only one who thinks Voldemorts death was somewhat anticlimatic? Of all the deaths, I think Remus's hit me hardest. I saw it coming, but I can't pretend I didn't cry my eyes out over it all the same. I wanted to hit Harry when he was calling Remus a coward at Grimmauld Place...But, then again, being a Marauders' Era roleplayer (specifically Remus and Lily), I'm quite biased. And I doubt anyone wants to read this because it's just a big block of text, but I thought I would post it anyways. xD Oh. And go Neville. DUMBLEDORE'S ARMY!
Fantastic! I finished reading it last night and I'm ready to read it all over again.
It was my absolute favorite book of all! I loved the twists, the heartbreak, th deaths, the plot, the betreal(sp?) and most of all, the ending. J.K. Rowling has really outdone herself. I was not expecting this ending, but I loved it just the same. I have already read it 2 times, and have started on my 3rd!♥ I must admit, I was worried about how she was planing on ending it like I'm sure every other Potter fan on the face of the globe was, but It was excellent. I can't wait to see the movie version of it, even if my close to least favorite directer, Mr. Yates does it. Harry's final adventure was captivating, ance I started, I couldn't put it down. My mom was the same. I even got a countdown "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" from Borders!♥ There were of course, loose ends that needed tying up that didn't, but none were so important that it ruined the story. The whole 'hallows' thing was intriging(sp?) and I enjoyed going through the story with Harry, Ron and Hermione as they search for answers and discover a horrifying truth. I must admit, at first I thought I was going to absolutely loathe it, even though in my heart I knew that I could never hate anything writtern by Jo. I was stunned by the plot, the twits, the deaths.I cried when Fred died, when Tonks and Lupin left their little boy behind. I laughed at How far Neville had come, from nerdlike to a rebel. I was amazed when I found out that Dumbledore's brother was at the Hog's Head. I was, most of all, shocked by Harry's fate. Now, I'm not one to completely believe in fate, but this was an exception. I was so happy when Voldemort, or Tom Riddle breathed his last. I felt like celebrating with Harry, but also a feeling of calm took me over. I felt wonderful knowing that Harry would live a wonderful life with Ginny. Overall, I am emensly(sp?) satisfied and more with J.K.Rowlings masterpiece. Thank you J.K. - a fan
It was amazing! The best book in the series, no doubt. I always thought that, after I read the last book, I'd be so sad. But now that I've read it, I just feel like it ended wonderfully. I like that Jo left some stuff open, but I really do think that she's confirmed that the veil is the passageway into wherever the dead people go in HP. There were tons of references, like the part where the second Peverell brother's girlfriend (or whatever they may have called it in those days) comes back from the dead, although he felt separated from her as though "by a veil". This book was very nearly perfect, and I think the epilogue really just made it better. The names were a bit crappy, but I loved the way everything ended and am thrilled that Hermione and Ron (finally) had babies together. Hahaha. I only wish that Fred, Tonks, and Lupin could've lived. But then it really wouldn't have been the same, I don't think. I cried and I laughed and I screamed and I cheered and I am now coming to the conclusion that the only real fault in this novel is that Umbridge never died.
I have read all of the books aloud to my mother because she does not like to read. She enjoys being read to, though. It took me until 4:30 a.m. on Sunday morning to read it to her (and I did not read ahead either). We both loved it and are sorry to see the series end. Awesome job, J.K.!
i'll probably have to reread this book to fully appreciate it.. cuz i'm not sure how i like it yet. but i was absolutely SOBBING during the entire time from when fred died to when harry died. I CAN NOT BELIEVE SHE KILLED OFF HEDWIG!! OMG!!!! i wanted to see what harry, ron and hermione's jobs were! so disappointed we didnt see that in the epilogue.
It was absolutely FATASTIC!! i loved it.. ESPECIALLY the epilogue!! I cant believe its over though.... and sad at who she killed off... except I was so happy when she nicked off Lestrange.. and Mrs Weasley to do it! AH! But still... completely wonderful..
wow. excellent. one of the best. very very dark though but really well written. i was so sad why Dobby died!!!!!! i wonder how they'll do with the movie. I didn't expect ron to leave, but it didn't surprise me that he did. he's got some issues, as the horcrux reveals. that was my favourite scene; when ron is about to destroy the horcrux. What a final battle! wow! way to go out with a bang!!!!!! literally.... poor Fred. he really didn't need to die. i thought she'd keep the twins together, cause that's just one of the cruelest things to do in my mind, separate twins. I expected harry to perform advada kedavra on voldemort. he'd performed every other unforgivable curse, i thought that was leading up to when he finally had to perform the third. And snape!!!! oh snape... what to say about him? i was one of the people that scorned the theory he loved lily. i was wrong. i was also wrong about harry bein a horcrux. meh. i suppose he wasn't a true horcrux. when he told harry to look at him when he was dying, it only occured to me after i listened to Mugglecast that he did so because harry has lily's eyes and he wanted to see them before he died... oh geez. well i could go on forever. on the whole a really excellent, terrifying and suspenseful book.
Yeah, great book, and great ending. But I´m quite dissapointed with some unanswered question and things that I do not understand, here they are: -Harry´s parents occupation and why they were so wealthy -If Bill can be the Secret Keeper of his own house, why Lily and James trustes someone else in the first place? - Who the hell was supposed to perform magic later in life? - Harry didn´t die, because Voldy was alive. So the other way, Voldy couldn´t die, becuase HArry was still alive, uh?...I guess, they both had to die, hadn´t they? Why Voldy died, if he had Lily´s magic protection as well? is that a flaw? - What about Fawkes? its important role? - The epilogue was so short, and without enough information!!! But, yeah, such a great book!!! Thank you Jo!!!
Oh my gosh, the book was so amazing!!! I think that Jo had to think a lot to get the entire story, starting out as a single mother and turning into one of the most famous people in the world!!! I think that she might write more; not about Harry but about Albus Severus Potter . . . . you never know about people.
I'm almost completely numb that this was it. This was the last of Harry Potter. I cried as soon as I read the inside flap of the U.S. version, and it only grew worse. I bawled. It was almost too much for me with each chapter. Especially after the deaths of the characters I absolutely adored! But the feeling to finally have all your burning questions answered after so many years is incredible. J.K. Rowling- Thank you. Your work is brilliant.
I really loved this book. I agree with most people about the epilogue, it didn't really answer most of the questions I had!! I kept looking for more when I finished reading. I would've liked to see the funeral for those lost. But overall it was really great. I'm so glad I wasn't spoiled. JK Rowling is the best!!
too loved page 625. I'll remember that number forever. It was too long coming. And I loved Harry asking "Is this the moment?" I loved everything except the epilogue, but I agree that it does leave tons of good-sized gaps for fanfiction writers and JKR to fill in as well. With all the scenes in the book, I'm really worried that they will cut way too much out for the movie. Guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I was estatic when I finished the book, because everything fit into place, but this afternoon, all I feel like is that someeone I know died. I broke down finally. I hate that there will be no more in this series. As I always was on Snape's side, I absolutely hate how Voldemort killed him, but he died a hero, a better man than we all thought he was. It broke my heart that the last thing he wanted to see was Harry's eyes, Lily's, actually. It was beautiful. As for someone doing some magic later in life, in the MuggleCast, someone said it may have been Dudley, for showing his good side for once. That makes sense. Remember, there's more to magic than wand-waving... Also, it may have been Crabbe (the bastard), with the fire. I wanted so much more background about the Potters' lives, though. Dobby and Snape are the two saddest deaths in the book, I think. If anybody wants to comment on my comments: avrilandharry22@yahoo.com . JKR rules!
I love Jo and i love the series it has become a bit of an obsession. I was glad to read the book and it was good but, I'm still disapointed. I loved that we fell in love with Kreacher and Dudley. I love that the Malfoys who were supposed to be some of the meanest characters actually were some of the most loving. (at least of each other) I love that Snape was good. I love that Percy came back. I hated that the trio sat ina tent for half the book. I hate that we don't know what happened to nearly everybody. I hate that so much that we were supposed to find out we still don't know.
I didn't like the epilogue -_- it was really sort of umm how do I put it? Well, a let-down...yup...that. But overall, it was a FANTASTIC book! OMG Hedwig died... :(:( And so did Hagrid...shhh! :( i cried when Dobby died...i cried when everyone that died...died... Gah! The Ron/Hermione kiss made me laugh for hours! it was so unexpected (not really) but yea...
*Sighs in satisfaction* Ahhh...I have been really upset [ to the point of tears] that the series is ending. I have felt an awkward connection with Harry Potter since the beginning, and am forever greatful for JKR, who has provided me with such a noble friend. I had very high expectations for this book, and if this were OWL terms, I would give it an E for Exceeds Expectations [well...except for the epilogue]. It was an amazing book. One of the best I have ever ready by far. The only books that I can think of that exceeds this book in my mind is the first, in which we met Harry. So many things fell into place in this story for me. There were some things that didn't seem all that important, but still needed to happen. I hope that JKR wrote such a sketchy epilogue because she is going to write another novel about the after Hogwarts life. Over all I am very satisfied and happy that many of my predictions came true! =]
it was great. i loved it, and it's my favorite in the series. we got all the important facts...who cares about the irrevelent things?
I thought that it was really good but, I thought that there were a lot of loose ends and it seemed like a lot of the things that she said would be in the book, just weren't. 'ear 'ear!
Someone made a commnet about Luna... I think that she wasn't in the epilogue because... and someone can correct me if I am wrong... but I think I read somewhere that she was not created until later after JKR had written the first couple books. So, in that sense, she wouldn't have been mentioned in the epilogue since its the one JKR wrote so long ago... but I agree, I would have loved to have known what happened to her!
brilliant, thanks JK! all the things tied up & made the reader think about the rest. lots of you are saying didn't like the epilouge... i thought it was great! it leaves you to think about what happened between (the fanfics will love it) but i think it encompasses it all really. all was well ;)
OMG i cant beleive its over!!!! its a complete shock, theres no more harry potter other than the films but theyr not that great but omg i loved the book it was so great i laughed and cried an got so excited near the end i started reading faster and faster, i cnt get it in my head thers no more harry potter. After 7 years of being with him, it was like knowing him so weird an then the alst chapter of the book , it ddnt go thru my head, like 7 yrs with him thru skool then suddenly went to him being in his 30's with kids, i spose im dissapointed its ended, i loved reading it it was like i was there watching it all happen wer u culd just escape into the book, awww maaan i cnt beleive its ended no more waiting for another book T.T T.T T.T overall the book was amazing! i dont know were she gets these ideas from the way that it all leads to the last book wer everything is answerd (ok not everything but most) she is an amazing woman JK
Poor, poor Severus, it was just heartbreaking to see him die. I know Jo always said there will only be 7 books, but hey, she did give herself a chance to wirte more books: how about the trio going back to Hogwarts for one year to finish their education? And I am not even talking about the 19 year-gap between the last chapter and the epiloge. Billiant, really.
awesome but I wish we knew what harry's parents and harry did. The epilouge seemed a bit like ff to me though. I definitely need to reread. Alot of the deaths like dobbys were sad but I didn't cry. I'm so glad percy came back. I wonder when the last time he joked was. I love Mrs. Weasly in the end. that was awesome. Why did it take hermione and ron so long to kiss anyway? I was so surprised when harry was a horcrux. the book was a bit strange because there were long periods of doing nothing and then all of a suddon , so many confusing things happened at once. I am so glad neville finally stepped up to the plate
This was the best book I have ever read. Though the epilogue was a "disappointment", I'm kind of glad it was. It left the story wide open for much more story. Hopefully JKR decides to write more, not even necessary about Harry and company, but about things like the life and adventures of the founders of Hogwarts. I'd also absolutely love to hear more about Teddy, being as similar to Harry as he is and with the possibility of him being a werewolf.
ok n i also forgot to ask anout trelawny. What happend to her? did i miss something about her through my tear filled eyes?
i have to reread it to be sure, but it is quickly becoming my fav. there are a lot of questions that i she did not answer though. what were Lilly and James' professions, how did they get all that gold, who did magic latter on life (i think it was was prob. Filch during the battle, what was Dudley's worst memory... i did like that we found out that it was not James who who was the "awful boy who told Lilly about the dementors. I thought that was a nice touch. Dumbledore's back story was awsome and i loved the whole deathly hallows thing, although i found some of the wand lore and the true master of the elder wand thing to be a bit confusing. It def. need a second and third read. but all in all amizing
I see otenetial for sequels.... Teddy=harr y (possibly?) Scorpius=dra co rose=hermione albus= harry one nice little touch was that volemort & malfoy, hrry started calling them Riddle and Draco. i thought that was wonderful.
it was probably the best book ive ever read, the ending was way more than i expected, the best book ever. loved the epilogue and what came after everything.
There is something to be said for the simple fact that JK finished. Not many authors, or people in general, could have pulled off what she did, keeping Harry thriving and supported for an entire decade, and end it with such finesse and grace like a true professional. For some, Deathly Hallows was a disappointment, others a perfect ending. But haters and lovers alike shared the same feelings of anticipation, excitement, emotion and fulfillment leading up to July 21, 2007. For JK and Harry and fans worldwide, that is a success in itself!
wow this was just absolutely incredible. the whole experience. i stayed up all night reading and i just have this great sense of loss. so many questions are still left unanswered. things that jo promised us. could anyone PLEASE help me i need closure!! 1)was the "gleam of triumph" becuase voldy now had harry's blood in him and would cancel out him being a Horcrux? 2)is "King's Cross" different for everyone who dies? i got the feeling it was only that becuase thats where harrys adventure began 3)WHO EXPERIENCED MAGIC LATER IN LIFE? i guess it could be Ariana but she was just introduced...wierd. 4)McGonagall new headmistress? 5)what happened to the Elder wand and the rest of the Hallows/Horcruxes? 6)was snape REALLY good? i have a hard time seeing that. and i still htink he was a double agent. 7)Who ends up living at Grimmauld place? i assume harry and ginny....8)James/Lily/Har ry/Ginny/Ron/Hermione JOBS???
JK Rowling has said dta shge may do sumfink for charity so all the proceeds go to charity like comic relief so just hope for the best!!!
