JKR announces character reprieve and encyclopedia
JKR announces character reprieve and encyclopedia In an interview with the Today Show, JK Rowling revealed who the character is that received a reprieve in Deathly Hallows. Highlight between the arrows to read who it is! --> Arthur Weasley <--

Additionally, Jo announced that she "probably will" create a Harry Potter encyclopedia! From NBC's website:

The encyclopedia would include back stories of characters she has already written but had to cut for the sake of narrative arc (“I've said before that Dean Thomas had a much more interesting history than ever appeared in the books”), as well as details about the characters who survive “Deathly Hallows,” characters who continue to live on in Rowling’s mind in a clearly defined magical world.

thats cool he got it-...encyclopedia!?! awsome but i hope theres pics lol (is that why we never found out about everyone else who lived)

Posted by Tonks1975 Jul 24th 2007

I hope she does!!! It could be a way to finally put these characters to rest. I need that so bad!!!! Hopefully it has more than just back story, I hope it has a little bit more on what happened after Harry beat Tom Riddle. A little more on EVERYONE!! What is everyone doing now. Happy, peaceful stories! Something I can walk away from feeling good not loss!!!!!!!! Don't get me wrong all the books are awesome and Deathly Hallows was the best, I loved it, she wrote it perfect, but lets face it, it was a sad story. Tragic. I think we all could use a pick me up one. PLEASE J. K. Rowling!!

i dont think that lupin was one of the characters she killed off at the last minute. the way she said it in the interview she made it seem like that chapter when james, lily, sirius and remus are walking with harry had been planned for a while. maybe she hadn't intended to kill tonks and someone else, but i think lupin was going to die all along. but i really dont know, so if anyone else has another opinion, lemme know.

Posted by hpfandudebruh Jul 24th 2007

I thought for sure it would be Hagrid. Anyway, I always thought Arthur had a much higher chance of dying than Molly, even though Mugglenet predicted Molly would be the Weasley to go. I'm glad they both survived, though, although part of me wishes Fred would have gotten the reprieve. I don't think anybody saw that one coming.

Posted by AurorTonks Jul 24th 2007

AWSOME! I cant wait! Hope it comes out soon!

Posted by i_heart_harry Jul 24th 2007

hahahaha i was off b4. i can't wait for the encyclopedia!!!

Posted by mischiefmanaged128 Jul 24th 2007

I guess he was supposed to die from the snake attack? Well I'm glad she didn't kill him, besides from being extremely upset and there being an odd air around the Weasley house for Books 6 and 7, we probably wouldn't have gotten that beautiful yet devastating scene with Neville and Alice and Frank, nor would we have seen the fate of Gilderoy Lockhart. Good decision, Jo. And I am quite excited for the encyclopedia!

Posted by freakishBBQ Jul 24th 2007

That's awesome! I really hope she does write one!! I'm sooooo happy she reprived Arthur! It would have really depressed if he died.

I’ve speculated why J.K. Rowling would make the epilogue 19 years later, and it just hit me why! James and Lily Potter died on October 31, 1981. Now, 17 years later, the date would be 1998 when Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows took place. In 19 years the date will be 2017. J.K. Rowling has stated in interviews that “Who knows? In ten years I might write another book on this Magical World†In ten years the date will be 2017!!!!!!!!! My speculation is that she might just pick up the story where the epilogue ended and follow Albus through his year at Hogwarts. It all fits together, and Albus would just be starting his first year at school. She could follow him through all 7 years just like she did with Harry. Albus also seemed to be the favorite child. He was named after two great headmasters and he reminded him of his mother. Harry and Albus have Lily’s eyes. I might be totally wrong, but I keep telling myself that she will do this. That is very comforting..haha

Posted by tonks243 Jul 24th 2007

God , that sucks I would have much rather had Arthur die, at least his and Molly's kids would have had a chance to know their father, and would still have their Mother at least, Unlike poor Teddy Lupin :( not only will he never know his father, he wont ever know his mother either (CRIES) I wish Lupin and Tonks would have lived!!

Posted by Nick_K87 Jul 24th 2007

I wonder who the headmaster is if it is not McGonagall (well the article just says "McGonagall was really getting on a bit").

Posted by bobfredc3q Jul 24th 2007

I cant wait for the HP encyclopedia to come out. I want to know what the trio's occupations were.

Posted by sister_snape Jul 24th 2007

i want to know how were the two she wasn't going to kill but did

Posted by PeevesWithGlitter Jul 24th 2007

Yes!!! The encyclopedia would make moi and ectastically happy bunny. YAY!!! :)

Posted by Deana Jul 24th 2007

So, Mr. Weasley was supposed to die, but JKR let him live? Is that what this means? ...Hope the encyclopedia is bigger than Fantastic Beats and Quidditch...those were a tad short..

Posted by Janet0520 Jul 24th 2007

(Jumps Up and Down) YAY!!!! HP is NOT over!! We still have something to look foward to, besides the movies and theme park. I really can't wait...I want to know who where the two she killed instead. My bets are on Remus and Tonks. I want it to have a bunch of short stories. Maybe from when Harry was a baby, from James and Lily era, and even to the future. However, it is I know I will love it! Thank you Jo! :)

Posted by Shakespeares_Sister Jul 24th 2007

Arthur? Well, I'm guessing Lupin had to die in his place then. That's not fair! Lupin was one of my favorite characters!!! He had to leave his son behind, with Tonks dying too. So sad, but- I would have cried as well if she killed Arthur. I WANT ENCYCLOPEDIA!! What happened to Luna, did she marry Nevile? Ahh. What about everyone else?!

Posted by muggle1963 Jul 24th 2007

I would have wanted Arthur dying instead of Fred...Poor Fred....Why Fred!!! I am excited about the encyclopedia though. Fred!!! RIP.

Posted by Henri Jul 24th 2007

I had theorized that Arthur Weasley was going to die months ago. I'm glad that he got reprieved though! I would've been bereaved if he died too.

Posted by GABZx3 Jul 24th 2007

I emailed that in xD I had no clue it would be arthur i thought it was Draco And an ency! YAY! i hope theres a midnight release party for that XDD

Posted by Eenkan Jul 24th 2007

I am sooo excited! Can't wait! MAybe she'll elaborate on the veil from HBP? Hope so! I'd also like to know more about luna also!

Posted by HarryPotterFreakers Jul 24th 2007

I was just soooo depresssed after finishing the book, and then i pop onto Mugglenet to see how everyone's coping, and what do you know?! Its not over yet! YEAH!

Posted by joyflo Jul 24th 2007

OMG THIS IS SO GREAT. =)

Posted by DanielWhit Jul 24th 2007

I guess that Arthur could have been killed in the Nagini attack which Harry sees in OotP. It could easily have been done so that they didn't quite get to him in time, though that would have put a different tone on the Christmas events. A lot of people thought that the life debts would play a massive role in DH, which is why Arthur being the reprived character never crossed my mind. I was expecting it to be a Hogwarts student to be honest.

Posted by Katherine_The_Crowned Jul 24th 2007

I can't believe she was gonna kill Mr. Weasley!! Luckily he didn't get the ax!

Posted by polkadotted Jul 24th 2007

Drew, that's an awesome theory. But what would she call the books? Albus Potter and the blahblahblah. hee, that'd be kind of strange

Posted by phoenixdust Jul 24th 2007

um, like.... if you havent read deathly hallows....WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON MUGGLENET???

Posted by magicalfairy00 Jul 24th 2007

I read the deathly hallows and crfied after cuz i realized it was the end:(:( but i am pleased to know that there will be an encyclopedia ;):)

Posted by Neville86 Jul 24th 2007

Nice! Something to still look forward to besides the movies. And we get to know the little tid bits that were not in the book! I love it!

Posted by FearII Jul 24th 2007

ENCYCLOPEDIA!!! (I guess we really don't need to ask about the two characters she killed contrary to plan, do we? *cracks knuckles*)

Posted by Potionmaster Jul 24th 2007

Just when we thought that there would be no more long waits. I'm already aching to get my hands on that Encyclopedia!!!

Posted by snuffles100 Jul 24th 2007

I'm glad she decided not to kill arthur weasley. As for the encyclopedia, I'm going to not get my hopes up. I have a feeling It'll be a REALLY long time before it comes out, if it comes out.

Posted by fell4snape Jul 24th 2007

OOOMMMMGGGG!!!! First of all, good for you, Arthur! I'm glad you didn't die...but like....all the same....I'd been hoping Snape would be the reprieved one....*continues weeping* Anyway. This Encyclopedia news IS EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN WANTING TO HEAR!!! *cries tears of joy* In my opinions of DH I wrote that the most valuable thing JK could do for us next would be to write an Encyclopedia, detailing the lives of everybody and including all kinds of random trivia that wouldn't come up in novel format but that we'd all eat up (you know, full names and birthdates and details of pasts and favorite pie flavors and all that important stuff!!) I mean for every character who had any kind of role in the books at all. *falls on knees* OH GOD JKR THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Now I have another HP book to look forward to, what a miracle! I can understand her wanting a break, heh heh...maybe she'll start the day AFTER tomorrow?? ^^;;; Well. Anyways. I'm sure the backstories and the futures of all the OTHER survivors we didn't hear about in the rather short epilogue will be SOOOO worth waiting for. This is crazy...best knews I've gotten all day...and I've had some pretty great news....wowwy wow wow woww!!!!

Posted by starslightskies Jul 24th 2007

that's great!! i thought she would do that. wonder how long it will be? i hope it will be veryyyyy long hehe. as for the reprieve, i thought it was hagrid, and i thought tonks and lupin were the two who died that weren't originally going to. [that was a badly written setence.]

Posted by FawkesFlames Jul 24th 2007

I was so sure that the reprieved character was Hagrid... oh well, I'm glad they both didn't die!

Posted by hArrYroCks46 Jul 24th 2007

the book was fantastic! got it at 12 in the morning and read it in 9 hours and 30 minutes! i knew Snape just had to be good... dumbledore never makes mistakes! so sad with all those people dying..fred...lupin....go nna miss the wating for the booKS! it was fun while it lasted!

Posted by girlwithawand Jul 24th 2007

That would be totally awesome if she'd do that!!!! I'm so glad that she told us which character she saved from dying because my guess was wrong haha

Posted by oshie13 Jul 24th 2007

I think that the encyclopedia will help smooth over all the complaints about the short but sweet epilogue (which personally, I loved). Really though -I hope Jo takes a good, long, well deserved break so that when she finally gets to it she will be ready and willing to really give us some great details on our beloved characters. I was so happy to read that the encyclopedia lies more on the side of possible than just an empty wish from mourning fans! By the way go back and re-read Snape's last scene if you have missed the importance of Harry's eyes being similar to Lily's. Lots of people seem to have that question!

Posted by gryffindorgrl10 Jul 24th 2007

OMG!!! Finally stopped jumping up and down with excitement!!!!!!!! It's not over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm happy we'll have more answers to our questions down the road. It must be such a relief for her to have the secret of the ending off her chest...now she can share secrets and stray plot lines!!!! Very excited!!! Thanks so much Jo!!!!!!!!! :)

Posted by Sarria33 Jul 24th 2007

This gives me hope. I couldn't bear to leave the whole HP series behind. :-( PLus: I really hope she includes is Snape, Lily, and the mauraders in this.

Posted by Long_Live_Potter Jul 24th 2007

Thank you God for sending us JK Rowling. I cannot wait for the encyclopedia because i still have so many questions! its exciting to hear shes already began taking notes about it, and all of my questions shall be answered =)

Posted by amy4dan1327 Jul 24th 2007

wow!!! i for sure thought that it totally wasn't going to be arthur weasley who got the reprieve, i thought i might be snape for sure or maybe even draco!!! but not arthur weasley!!! but so i'm happy she's going to write an encyclopedia, i'm going to get it when it comes out, even though it might be a while off!!! and i hope in it she will write about all the other secrets and stuff that we weren't able to find out in dh, like what dudley saw when the dementors attacked him!!! =]

Posted by ophia921 Jul 24th 2007

I cannot wait to see the encyclopedia. It will answer alot of questions that still may be lingering!

Posted by live_the_magic Jul 24th 2007

I am glad Mr. Weasley didnt die. I really thought he was going to. I wonder who the two people she killed instead were. Also, yay for an HP encyclopedia. She really must write one.

Posted by soccerluver13 Jul 24th 2007

OMG that is awesome!

Posted by hpgeek512 Jul 24th 2007

ooohh can't wait!!!!

Posted by chommy Jul 24th 2007

Ugh. Why didn't she kill Arthur? I would've cared less.

Posted by mungosgirl Jul 24th 2007

thats really interesting...is seriously thought the character who got the reprieve was Hagrid with the spiders...but no....I cant wait for the encyclopedia

Posted by chaibabachai Jul 24th 2007

ahhh! that's so exciting! I can't wait to read it!! I was hoping to get to find out more about how things ended up afterwards. I wanted that information(what will be in the encyclopedia) much much MUCH more than what was in the epilogue.
