New York, NY August 2, 2007 - Scholastic, the global publishing, education and media company, announced today that sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the blockbuster final volume in J.K. Rowling’s phenomenally successful series, reached a record breaking 11.5 million copies in the U.S. in its first 10 days on sale. This milestone comes on the heels of the previously announced 8.3 million copies sold in the U.S. within the first 24 hours of the book’s release at 12:01am on July 21st.

Scholastic was printing copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows right up to the final hours prior to release and, with pre-orders and reservations climbing at an incredible pace, the Company was able to print enough additional copies to be in position for re-supply following the launch. The additional copies brought the total number of the U.S. edition in print for the seventh book to 14 million.

Currently, Harry Potter titles and the deluxe edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows hold eight spots on the USA Today bestseller list. In the U.S. alone, there are currently 140 million copies of the seven Harry Potter books in print.

Harry Potter books in print in the U.S. by title:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone - 29 million

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 24 million

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - 20 million

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 19 million

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 17 million

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - 17 million

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - 14 million

That's awesome. The midnight party I went to was insane and there were so many people there. As I looked around at all of these people willing to stand outside in the middle of the night for a book my thought was, "Why aren't more of these people my friends?"

Posted by Laly_fairy Aug 2nd 2007

That-s a LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!Well done, JK!!!!!!!!!!!!350 MILLIONS!!!amazing...but after all it-s HARRY POTTER...Obviously it-s SOOO fantastic

Posted by pxefig Aug 2nd 2007

The numbers aren't the ten-day totals, it's totals period. SS has sold more simply because it has been for sale longer. Give DH ten years and those number will be different...maybe just a bit!

Whoot!!! That's awesome!!! I contributed to 2 of those 11.5 million... :)

Posted by MelRows Aug 2nd 2007

I figured out that that is the equivilent of 13 people in the US buying a book every second for 10 days strait. That's pretty crazy if you ask me. I want to know in about 20 years the total sales of all the books. That'd be amazing.

Posted by loonyxlovexgood Aug 2nd 2007

yay!!! gooooooooooooooooooo harry potter!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Quirrell_is_a_squirrel Aug 2nd 2007

one of those copies is mine!!!!!! whooo!!!!!! top 25?

Posted by pxefig Aug 2nd 2007

After all these years of waiting to know, it's weird to think that someday the ending of this book will be as common knowledge as knowing Darth Vadar is Luke's father.

Posted by britishwannabe Aug 2nd 2007

Posted by Emi_5 Aug 2nd 2007

Heck Yes goooo JO!!! gooooo Harry Potter!!! yay! and yes i am proud to say that i am a proud owner of one of these lovely books.....AHHH...actually whoever said that there won't be any other HP books to break that record.....um well what about if Jo makes that encyclopedia...that is def going to be BIG...HUGE.....GYNORMOUS! !!

Posted by Kid_A Aug 2nd 2007

But the rank of the selling number seems to be decreased from to first book to the seventh book (of course seventh book is STILL on release, it's new). I hope seventh book gets 20 million copies sold in two months, but I don't have hope, because the fans have got their copies, other people will buy the book because of interest...

Posted by NelleDE Aug 2nd 2007

WAY TO GO JO! That is just fantastic. That is millions of people reading real books. No matter what anyone says about the stories themselves, to get that many people to read (anything) is an amazing feat. You helped make the world fall in love with reading again and that is the most wonderful gift you could have given us! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
