New York, NY August 2, 2007 - Scholastic, the global publishing, education and media company, announced today that sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the blockbuster final volume in J.K. Rowling’s phenomenally successful series, reached a record breaking 11.5 million copies in the U.S. in its first 10 days on sale. This milestone comes on the heels of the previously announced 8.3 million copies sold in the U.S. within the first 24 hours of the book’s release at 12:01am on July 21st.

Scholastic was printing copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows right up to the final hours prior to release and, with pre-orders and reservations climbing at an incredible pace, the Company was able to print enough additional copies to be in position for re-supply following the launch. The additional copies brought the total number of the U.S. edition in print for the seventh book to 14 million.

Currently, Harry Potter titles and the deluxe edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows hold eight spots on the USA Today bestseller list. In the U.S. alone, there are currently 140 million copies of the seven Harry Potter books in print.

Harry Potter books in print in the U.S. by title:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone - 29 million

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 24 million

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - 20 million

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 19 million

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 17 million

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - 17 million

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - 14 million

To date, over 350 million copies of the seven books in the Harry Potter series have been sold worldwide.

That's great!!! It took HBP 9 weeks to sell that many copies so it's well on it's way to outselling it in overall copies! Kid_A: that's not the number of copies that each copie has sold...it's how many copies Scholastic printed!

Is this book popular or what? Actually the book has sold 11.5 million and counting. There are 14 million in print leaving 2.5 million left to be sold of this run. Okay, who out there is holding back? 2 of the 11.5 million are mine (yes, I had to buy my daughter's copy because we were going to fight over who got to read it first. Being a self indulgent mother, I would have lost that battle, so I bought 2 and I'm not sorry that I did.) JKR, you are sterling! And after 3 rereads I am still in awe of your writing skills. Long live Harry Potter.

I was literally in tears when I got this book in my hands. If a book can do that to someone, it must be pretty well on. No joke, guys.. a good portion of us had been waiting for July 21, 2007 for 10 solid years without knowing that exact date. We are SO lucky to actually be here for the release of each of these books, and to be able to theorize and contemplate and argue about every little thing in the books until now. Years from now, when our kids and our kid's kids are reading these, they'll just have to pick one up right after the other without the fun theories. Poor things.

Posted by srose2270 Aug 2nd 2007

wow, simply amazing. i'm proud to say i got one of the books bought within the first 24 hours. :)

Posted by hallowsaint Aug 2nd 2007

the 15 of dannyrob is a mystery that we shall never know because of it's total randomness so let us celebrate you oh 15 who is so overlooked and which gives the rob of danny that added zip which defines who/what you are. So here's to you 15.

Posted by sirius_lee Aug 2nd 2007

oh tiki tiki ---hey dannyrob15, u r rob15, no? he says that 2 and he tlks like u 2. wut r u supposed 2 be? a BETTER rob15 in the form of dannyrob15????? i new that u were rob15 whos actalluy dannyrob15 who's u which is rob15 making u both but its u whos both so its all three thats u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by hallowsaint Aug 2nd 2007

oh sirius_lee don't make things such complicated...the whole thing for the name is definitely 15. I mean can't you tell how subtle that it is put in the name. 15 describes this guy/girl/it/wolf I mean it's that simple.
