New York, NY August 2, 2007 - Scholastic, the global publishing, education and media company, announced today that sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the blockbuster final volume in J.K. Rowling’s phenomenally successful series, reached a record breaking 11.5 million copies in the U.S. in its first 10 days on sale. This milestone comes on the heels of the previously announced 8.3 million copies sold in the U.S. within the first 24 hours of the book’s release at 12:01am on July 21st.

Scholastic was printing copies of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows right up to the final hours prior to release and, with pre-orders and reservations climbing at an incredible pace, the Company was able to print enough additional copies to be in position for re-supply following the launch. The additional copies brought the total number of the U.S. edition in print for the seventh book to 14 million.

Currently, Harry Potter titles and the deluxe edition of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows hold eight spots on the USA Today bestseller list. In the U.S. alone, there are currently 140 million copies of the seven Harry Potter books in print.

Harry Potter books in print in the U.S. by title:

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - 24 million

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - 19 million

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - 17 million

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - 17 million

No matter what anyone says about the stories themselves, to get that many people to read (anything) is an amazing feat. You helped make the world fall in love with reading again and that is the most wonderful gift you could have given us! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Posted by severin Aug 2nd 2007

I bought two copies - the US version at the midnight release, and I ordered the UK version from AmazonUK. I have two sets of each book. What do you think Jo's next book will be about? What could she possibly be cooking up now?

Posted by Cnmynameinlites Aug 2nd 2007

WOW! That is amazing. I am so excited that there are that many Harry Potter fans out there. I am so excited, JK wrote an amazing book! Great job again.

Posted by SheltieMom Aug 2nd 2007

Do the numbers include the deluxe edition? I have one of each (hubby and I can't share), and folks, if you haven't seen the deluxe edition illustrations, try to! Mary GrandPre out did herself. There is a beautiful *COLOR* print of the first scene outside the Malfoy Mansion--a glorious white peacock against a large orange moon, with Yaxley and Snape in the background, entering through the ornate gate. Also, there are full-page sized illustrations at the end of the book of each chapter illustration, as well as a bonus illustration of a smiling Ron, Hermione and Harry in the Headmaster's office, the scene from the end of the book (they are all pretty beat up... and given what they all just went through, no wonder!) Find it if you can... it was sooo worth getting!

Posted by badumboom Aug 2nd 2007

Severin Is there much of a difference between the two other than the covers?

Posted by Aestua_Nox Aug 2nd 2007

YAY!!! I'm so proud of the world at large for realizing how wonderful the HP series is. Yay for 14 million copies of Deathly Hallows!!! YAY!!! *grin* (top 200, lol :))

Posted by sbwilson2 Aug 2nd 2007

At an average of $20 a book...that is over $7 billion dollars. OH SNAP!

Posted by ThnksFrThMmrs07 Aug 2nd 2007

Ha, and that's surprising why? =]]

Posted by divz_potterized Aug 2nd 2007

Posted by severin Aug 3rd 2007

to badumboom: (sorry, I logged off for awhile). Sometimes there are interesting differences. In HBP, in the scene at the top of the tower when Dumbledore and Draco are talking, in the US version, DD says to Draco that if he comes over to the good side, the Order can hide him, his mom and his dad, and protect the Malfoys from Voldemort. However, this paragraph was completely left out in the UK version. Insignificant now because we know how the story ends, but until DH came out, that really kept a lot of people guessing.

Posted by inferi_girl Aug 3rd 2007

YAY!not surprised, but hey you just got to celebrate :)

Posted by goldensnitcher Aug 3rd 2007

Posted by OD_94 Aug 3rd 2007

JO IS THE BEST!! THERE'S NO DOUBT ABOUT IT!! I mean, seriously, what would we do without Harry Potter ... Would this site be a lord of the rings dedicated site instead? =o

Posted by melissa_hp_freak Aug 3rd 2007

I think HP is fantastic..wow..I just looked up US's population number..wow..a whooping 300 million..(compare to AUS...has only 22 million) I think HP has changed the world, teaching values through novels and Jo has given the literacy world more than anyone else.. I cant believe this is the last book..it's just soo -cries- amazing and sad at the same time. Im really looking forward to the encyclopedia..although I just hope it comes out soon..because I need something to read, Im not putting Deathly Hallows down or any of the other HP books because I love HP and Im determined not to read any other books other than HP..so Jo better slow down or hurry..or something along those lines. Seriously...Im now having a vision of my sitting in class reading an encyclopedia of Harry Potter's world...hmmm..I think it would be a strange scene for the other people in class...lol..imagine all the people that reads HP books are now nerdy because they're reading a HP encyclopedia...lol..still ..I am a nerd..so that's not a really big change..but there is one change..an HP encyclopedia... Im weird arent I? This is my first MuggleNet Comment Post..and it's freakin long..lol.. Imagine all my other posts Im gonna post..omg..lol.. -pop-

Posted by LovinLuna88 Aug 3rd 2007

WOW, that is pretty Spectacular. only Harry Potter could do something like that. HPBrian, I completley agree with you :)

Posted by irishfanaticwhobelievessnapeisgood Aug 3rd 2007

Wow that's great news!!!!! Go harry potter!!!! I still can't believe the series is over, for ages I was like, 98 days to go, 50 days to go and so on.... :( .... but on the up side us fans will make harry live on, and lets hope this encyclopedia actually happens some day!!!! I still have loadsa questions bout DH which werent answered on that online thingy with JKR. Sigh. I think Snape's boggart would defo be Lily's corpse... who knows???? GO HARRY POTTER AND JKR!!!!!!

Posted by britishwannabe Aug 3rd 2007
