McKellen talks Gandalf vs. Dumbledore
Sir Ian McKellen was recently interviewed by The Guardian where amongst other things he discusses Dumbledore vs. Gandalf, the character who he played in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.McKellen says that while he and Michael Gambon are close friends, the topic of "how to play a wizard" has never come up. And as far as if he would have taken over the role of Dumbledore from the late Richard Harris, McKellen said:
"People say to me, don't you wish you'd played Dumbledore? I say no! I played Gandalf! The original. There was a question as to whether I might take over from Richard Harris [Gambon's predecessor in the Dumbledore role], but seeing as one of the last things he did publicly was say what a dreadful actor he thought I was, it would not have been appropriate for me to take over his part." He smiles icily. "It would have been unfair."
When asked who would win the battle between Dumbledore and Gandalf, McKellen never hesitated, "Gandalf. Of course."

yeah, I agree with -the musicwich-. What UhsFethMalorn said is an opinion, and it should be stated so. Not everyone agrees with you, UhsFethMalorn. Anyway, can we all please keep the spamming to a minimum? I don't want more work than I need. Oh and Cheesecakians, I'm FelixFelicis888, but I'm on my admin. account.
'Since gay people are cooler than straight people, they have awesome gay powers.' What? That's just childish rubbish. And the Lord of the Rings is a higher level of reading in every way. The description, the depth to which it goes, the strength of the characters, the mastery of language...Harry Potter is wonderful, but Tolkien was the lord of the literary craft, up there with Orwell, Shakespeare, Wilde...
i completely agree with you UhsFethMalorn
DUHHH!!! that mckellen guys is a flippin' spaz!!!!
"And the Lord of the Rings is a higher level of reading in every way. The description, the depth to which it goes, the strength of the characters, the mastery of language...Harry Potter is wonderful, but Tolkien was the lord of the literary craft, up there with Orwell, Shakespeare, Wilde..." As for description, I don't think we could have a much more descriptive author than J.K. Rowling. Every scene is depicted with specific details to the point where you could easily picture it in your mind. And don't even get me started on depth. Most characters in the HP series are without a doubt complex enough to be real people, and Harry, despite his obvious flaws (recklessness, stubbornness, arrogance [in that he usually feels that he has to do everything alone] and a slight temper) finds the strength within him to intend to sacrifice his own life for the general public, which includes people who have greatly wronged him. If that's not depth then I can't tell you what is. I shouldn't even have to explain how brave and strong a character like Snape was. Some say that Snape was weak in not being able to forgive James, and that is true, but his weaknesses make him all the more real. Frodo also has emotional depth as he travels all the way from the Shire to Mordor but I don't believe for one minute that LotR has any more depth than HP. I think the depth of both stories is equal. We also have to consider that J.R.R. Tolkein and J.K. Rowling grew up in different time periods, so their lingual styles are bound to be different. The language Tolkein uses is more stiff and formal than Rowling's language, and I believe this is because of a difference in personal narration styles of the two authors and the time period in which their stories were written. I personally prefer Rowling's more casual writing style over Tolkein's stilted language...but hey, to each his own.
Haha I love Ian McKellen. He's so witty even when he's talking about someone who doesn't like him. And duh, of course Gandalf would win. He's the original wizard!
NO WAY, Dumbledore is better! Ian McKretard doesn't know what he's talking about.
^Actually that would be Merlin.
In my opinion they both did an excellent job portraying their own wizard and I wont choose sides.. as for Ian McKellan playing dumbledore.. I wouldnt have liked it only due to the fact that I would be seeing Gandolf instead of Dumbledore.. When I hear someone mention Dumbledore I picture Michael Gambon or Richard Harris.. when someone mentions Gandolf its Ian.. they both rock though! EMERSON FOR A WALK ON ROLE IN DEATHLY HALLOWS WAHOOOO!!!
Honestly, even though i earlier stated that Gandalf would win, they wouldnot fight (as numerous others have said). Plus, i respect both Wizards too much to throw mud at the other.
you know, this would make a great poll question
Actually, I agree with fightinirish555. This would be a great poll. EMMERSON OR WHOEVER IS IN CHARGE OF POLLS, TAKE IT INTO CONSIDERATION!! (I hope that's big enough so that they can see...lol)
I've never read Lord of the Rings.. so I guess I can't really say which one would "pwn" each other.. Yes, SiriusFan, Emerson would be great for a walk-on role in Deathly Hallows. :) On another note, where's this week's MuggleCast? I was looking forward to listening to it today. ;)
hey everyone! theres a party going on at my post! (the last post) anyone can come! ill see you all there!

all right TO LAST POST!
new last post everyone cum on cheesecakiens lets go *charges to the new moonlit post*
to everyone who is confused about the comment disabled thing: the new moonlit post is the one that says "HBP filming update, MuggleNet's HBP section opens". ^_^
I agree with everyone who is saying that it isn't fair to compare Dumbledore and Gandalf. I am a huge fan of both Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter, and the two wizards are both very powerful, but for completely different reasons. So trying to figure out who would win in a duel is both pointless and unfair... I mean it's like pairing Aragorn and Sirius off and seeing who would win. Both are great characters, but it'd be unfair because Sirius could obviously AK Aragorn, but that doesn't mean that Sirius is more powerful or better than Aragorn. It's just that they come from completely different worlds and have completely different skills.
I've got to say... I'm Dumbledore's through and through. Dumbledore would SO beat Gandalf. Gandalf stretches the number 1 rule: NO ONE CAN COME BACK FROM THE DEAD- what's with Gandalf the White as opposed to Gandalf the Grey?
hum.... any cheesecakians aboard?????
lidietta were all in my new post its the second from the bottom since they disabled the comments on the very last one.
i think the battle would be pretty even although Gandalf did come back from the dead so i think Gandalf would win
I am a HP and LotR fan and Dumbledore would have no chance, amazing wizard that he is. Gandalf is a member of the Istari, who were all Maiar. Basically, they were lesser Gods. The Istari could have power equal to that of Sauron if they had not all sworn oaths not to abuse their power. (Which Saruman broke, which meant he died, instead of going back to Valinor) Gandalf is also the holder of the Flame of Arnor, one of the most powerful branches of magic there is. So I'm sorry, but Dumbledore would have absolutley no chance against Gandalf.
gosh what is going on? why do they keep disabling the comments?
HEY CHEESEPEEPS WE'RE ON THE LAST POST
First off Dumbledore is a big, ugly gay turd-whopper who rapes the little Hogwarts students. Gandolf saved Middle Earth from destruction and he has the power to come back to life after he's already died and Dumbledore...is...well... gay. He also can't come back to life and he's a cotton-headed ninnymuggins who...is...yes, you guessed right ;is gay. BUT WAIT! Dumbledore can levitate a person and say some stupid "spells!!" Oooooooooooooooooo! That's really impressive...for a homo. Now let's talk about the Great and powerful Gandalf the Grey/White: Gandalf. He can kill a urak-ki faster than Dumbledore can picture Santa Clause in a man-thong...which as you may or not be able to imagine is pretty fast. Also Gandalf carries a rock-hard staff and a sword that can slice Dumbledore's beard off like a hot knife through butter. Now I've skimmed throuygh a few comments and people have said that Dumbledore the Gay could beat Gandalf the Grey because Dumbledore has better magic or something. That may be, but Gandalf has more useul magic like his shield he can surround himself with and he has his lightning-sword; Dmbledore may be able to make someone drop their stick- Oh wait (my bad) Their WAAAAND. Yeah some good that is. All they would be able to do is hmm, let me think...ah yes PICK IT UP!!! DUH!! Also even if Gandalf didn't have his sword he would just smack Dumbledore over head before he could wave his wand. If he didn't have any access to magic he would be able to do some sort cool move and chop Dumbledore into a million little pieces while Dumbledore probably hasn't ever seen a real sword except when little Harry Potter pulled the sword out of the hat and if he did have the chance to hold one the dingleberry would pick it up by the blade and then drop it on his feet and chop off his wee little toes. But back to the main point: GANDALF THE GREY COULD TOTALLY DECIMATE DUMBLEDORE THE GAY. Mr.Poe
well willyweasley800 i think your gay for being so imature about the subject (nobody cares for your opinion) even though Gandalf could probably destroy dumbledore if were a battle of the wits i think the winner would come down to being dumbledore
UhsFethMalorn i also agree with u , but i enjoyed reading the hp books more than lotr
NO!blackten64---willyweas ley800 is not gay! Gay have feelings to and are human like the rest of us! willyweasley800 is obviously some kind of primitive dinosauer or something! DON'T GET CONFUSED!
willyweasley800----By the way-you are aware that Ian McKellen who plays Gandlaf the gray is a proud gay himself, right?(I hope you understand all the things that I write. to tell you the truth I was quite suprised that a primitive dinosaur such as you could write english. In fact I was quite suprised that dinosaurs could write at all seeing as they don't have opposable thumbs. I guess those archeologists were wrong after all. Thanks for enlightning me!) ---To any other who may be reading this comment it has nothing to do with the HP vs LOTR issue I am not trying to insult either side!(exept for the primitive homophobe side)
I suspect that those who believe that Dumbledore could beat Gandalf in a fair fight haven't read the Lord of the Rings. Dumbledore couldn't kill a human with a maimed soul but Gandalf could destroy demons.
I love Gandalf and Dumbledore in diffrent ways. Dumbledore couldn't play Gandalf and vice versa. They are diffrent ppl w/ diffrent personalitys. I love them both.
willyweasley800-- That's very immature. As a few others have said, you're a bigotry-practicing primitive dinosaur, and I have nothing else to say on the matter. Dumbledore can do magic without a wand, by the way, and though I haven't read LoTR, i'm sure that Gandalf and Dumbledore are too different to compare. They wouldn't fight anyway... They'd discuss things over a nice glass of mead.
I am not a primitive dinosaur and I will admit that what I wrote was a bit imature but it was just for a laugh. Your comment shows that you obviously have no or little sense of humor. (blackten64) I don't hate Dumbledore just that he's gay. I do, however like Gandalf much more than Dumbledore as well as the LOTR series.----Mr. Poe----P.S. I very much agree with Lorelei about Gandalf.
First off Dumbledore is a big, ugly gay turd-whopper who rapes the little Hogwarts students. Gandolf saved Middle Earth from destruction and he has the power to come back to life after he's already died and Dumbledore...is...well... gay. But back to the main point: GANDALF THE GREY COULD TOTALLY DECIMATE DUMBLEDORE THE GAY. All for a bit of fun that was. But seriously, Gandalf would win.
Er...willyweasley800, if you're still there...are you a HP fan?
wow hallowsaint ur an idiot...trying to make fun of dumbledore for being gay when ian mcklellon or however u spell his name is a homosexual himself....dumbledore all day....anyway, its kinda stupid how ian mcklellon (i dont know how the hell to spell his name) is still all butthurt that richard harris dissed him so many years after it happened and after he died.
its not a question on who would win dumbledore or gandalf, but a question who has more fans...because on a poll comes around, the one with the most fans will win.
Dadu701, shut it about hallowsaint...
willyweasley800 -- It was a joke? But I thought jokes were funny?
hahahah i like harry potter alot more than lord of the rings but i have always liked gandalf better than dumbledore. gandalf would definately win, he came back to life as the white wizard when he died... dumbledore didnt. i always thought that mckellen (the guy who plays gandalf) should play dumbledore
Dumbledore, DUH!
Gandalf owns dumbledore on so many levels.
Mike!! Are you there??????
