McKellen talks Gandalf vs. Dumbledore
McKellen talks Gandalf vs. Dumbledore Sir Ian McKellen was recently interviewed by The Guardian where amongst other things he discusses Dumbledore vs. Gandalf, the character who he played in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

McKellen says that while he and Michael Gambon are close friends, the topic of "how to play a wizard" has never come up. And as far as if he would have taken over the role of Dumbledore from the late Richard Harris, McKellen said:

"People say to me, don't you wish you'd played Dumbledore? I say no! I played Gandalf! The original. There was a question as to whether I might take over from Richard Harris [Gambon's predecessor in the Dumbledore role], but seeing as one of the last things he did publicly was say what a dreadful actor he thought I was, it would not have been appropriate for me to take over his part." He smiles icily. "It would have been unfair."

When asked who would win the battle between Dumbledore and Gandalf, McKellen never hesitated, "Gandalf. Of course."

MERCILESSHANDOFPLAGUES0: sorry, that is capped to get your attention in case you intend to post again. What is the matter with you? Was the F U really necessary? In case you haven't noticed Dumbledore and Gandalf are both fictional characters; though it pains me to say it. GET A LIFE! Also, IN CASE YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED MANY HP FANS ARE ALSO LOTR FANS and as one of that particular group of fans I found your post very insulting. Once again, GET A LIFE!

Posted by ginnypotter719 Nov 26th 2007

none of the old dudes who played dumbledoreare better than the dude who played gandalf...gandalf had a certain class..and powerful aura....dumble vs gandalf...gandalf could so take him down...GO LOTR!! who ever did the casting for lotr ...they really know what they are doing unlike the peeps who cast for hp.... how could the dude who plays dumbledore insult the dude who plays gandalflike that??! he was super super awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !! return o theking!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Nov 26th 2007

I did state that almost rudely, but i still uphold that compared to gandalf dumbledore is a measly being and i still think hes a wimp. Dumbledore was said to be the most powerful wizard of his age but dies in a situation that could easily be avoided and sends a kid to take out the darkest wizard of all time. Gandalf in my opinion was wiser and a more powerful in many ways

Posted by nadiapotter Nov 26th 2007

ok, I do think Gandalf would kick Dumbledore's ass very badly. But I cannot see them fighting.

Posted by honeydukes0209 Nov 26th 2007

Someone explain to me how Gandalf is better, please! I wouldn't know, cuz I've never even read LOTR...maybe I should...

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Nov 26th 2007

Dumbledore is pretty stupid to begin with. yeah hes wise but gandalfs been around for 2000 years so he beats him there. Just look at all the times hes been tricked in the books. and like spew said gandalf is like a demi-god, dumbledore is just a mortal. Gandalf is skilled in war too and not just against a few stupid death eaters, he takes out dragons and orcs and trolls and demons, then defeats sauron in mirkwood (with the help of the council) and in mordor (with the help of everyone else) while dumbledore can only take down grindelwald and some death eaters. not even a wizard that is mortal so i doubt he would do better against an immortal

Posted by member_of_SPEW Nov 26th 2007

CRYSTAL ARE YOU KIDDING YOU NEED TO READ LOTR!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAA!!!!!

Posted by falulabond Nov 26th 2007

I have always said that Sir Ian McKellen would have made the best Dumbledore, but what can u do...and P.S. Dumbledore would so kick ***, lol.

Posted by queen_emma Nov 26th 2007

ive met ian mckellen. hahaha. he is so lovely, he's just like dumbledore. sweet and gentle. and gay too! BET NO ONE ELSE HERE HAS MET IAN MCKELLEN!! HEHE

Posted by Meesaii Nov 26th 2007

Two completly different books Two completly different characters taking place in two completly different times xD ..... bu t >_> I second what Grnd3lW4Ld posted AGREE AGREE but seriously. if you're all going to compare them at LEAST read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings and have some knowledge of what Gandalf is capable of doing before saying "OMG DUMBLEDORE WOULD WIIN!!!!" because you have no idea :x

Posted by honeydukes0209 Nov 26th 2007

Thanks Grindles...Hey, did you know that Grindelwald is a city in Switzerland? I didn't know that! ...Haha, Spew...should I? I'll find time during the Christmas break of something...I just can't fit another book into my schedule at the present! Which one's the first book?

Posted by i_eat_death_eaters Nov 26th 2007

i said before dumbledore would win...but Ian McKellen would totally be Micheal Gambon in duel and Albus vs. Micheal......ALBUS all the WAAYY BABY and McKellen vs. Dumbledore...DUMBLEDORE!! !!!! i think that covers all the possible combos possible

dunno, i think its safe to assume it has something to do with the news post tho

Posted by Nerwen Nov 26th 2007

In an hypothetic duel between them, It's simple: - Gandalf is not a mere human or wizard but a maiar (a semi-angelic entity) - Gandalf CAME BACK from death...Dumbledore didn't. ;)

Posted by honeydukes0209 Nov 26th 2007

Right...well, how's life treating you, Grinds? School going good and stuff?

At the risk of sounding like a total know-it-all jerk, wizards in Lord Of The Rings aren't comparable at all to Potterverse wizards, because they aren't even technically people. LOTR wizards are basically the "angels" of Middle Earth. ...I'm such a nerd.

Posted by honeydukes0209 Nov 26th 2007

Haha...Thanks for clearing that up, sonicbluth!

Posted by UhsFethMalorn Nov 27th 2007

Er, sonicbluth, I wouldn't exactly call you a nerd. Especially seeing as you are wrong. They are not the angels of Middle Earth.

Posted by tiassa Nov 27th 2007

I wouldn't call them angels but they are one level under the gods/valars(sorry if Im wrong at what you call them its been a while since I read Tolkin) so sonicbluth is right. and by the way sonicbluth you are on an HP website. I think most people here read Lotr so we are all nerds.

Posted by dalvana Nov 27th 2007

My first thought was that Dumbledore easily would win over Gandalf. But then I realised that is because Dumbledore in his world is so much more powerful than any other. But Gandalf is only the most powerful next to many other powerful people, so he just seems less powerful in comparison to Dumbledore. But Gandalf would probably win against Dumbledore in a duel. I do prefer D to G though. D is so much more personal and warm than G. Anna www.option. blogg.se

Posted by EowynRowena Nov 27th 2007

Well, I always liked the way Richard Harris played Dumbledore, but I just can't believe he said that about Ian McKellen! A bad actor, hello?! Up to this day I am standing in complete and utter awe of his Gandalf portrayal. The man rocks!!!!!!! And he's gay, too, so he would've been even more appropriate for Dumbledore than Gambon, hehe. I'd have loved Ian McKellen as Dumbledore, that would've been really interesting and no doubt amazing. I don't really think the two wizards can be compared in this way ("the original"), both are unique and wonderful in their own way, don't you think?

Posted by Marvin Nov 27th 2007

Everyone who is saying "dubledore" have you even read any part of LOTR? Or are you basing your debate off of his charecter in LOTR? His Charecter in the Movie is a meaer fraction of his power. Heck, he's not even human, he's what they call a Maiar...basically an Arch-Angel. Futher more, he was was a Valar, the stronger and closer to hte creater of the two Maiar factions; the other being corrupted by Melkor (evil); others in this faction; Suarmon, Balrogs, ect. BUT WAIT GANDALF WAS KILLED BY A BLAROG OMG HAX! Galdalf outdone by a Balrog - and returned much more powerful then before. Dumbledore outdone by a ring - became more of a decrebid old man.

Posted by LoveLusciousLucius Nov 27th 2007

ok, back on pages 50 and 51, hallowssaint says that "Gandalf would totally pwn on Dumbledore's gay self...." *cough* ahem...Sir Ian McKellen is gay. By the way. Now. I think that since Sir Ian and Michael are such good friends that "how to play a wizard" should be one of the FIRST things they should discuss. I mean really! GAMBON NEEDS ALL THE HELP HE CAN GET! HE'S A TERRIBLE DUMBLEDORE AND I HATE HIM AND I DON'T CARE IF RICHARD HARRIS THINKS IAN IS A BAD ACTOR! BECAUSE HE'S NOT AND AAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNYY YYYYYYYYYONE WOULD BE A BETTER DUMBLEDORE THAN GAMBON! I mean...Emma Watson would, and she's a teenage girl! That's how bad Gambon is! I will rejoice when Alan Rickman finally pwns that hack and launches him off of the astronomy tower! I will sing the Hallelujah chorus, and I don't care if they throw me out of the theater! I....DON'T....CARE! BECAUSE I HATE HIM! Ok. I'm done now. and Marvin, i think they are both amazing...BUT BOROMIR IS MY LOTR HERO!!!

Posted by PotterGirl1 Nov 27th 2007

No Way! Dumbledore Would Well Beat Gandalf! Dumbledore Rules!

Posted by mrs_weasley Nov 27th 2007

Why does it have to be either? They're both different characters (though they do have similarities), so it's not really possible to compare them... xx

Posted by LookMeUp_AtSpinnersEnd Nov 27th 2007

An immortal cannot die. Even though I haven't read LotR [and I don't intend to... not my cup of tea], I'm not going to argue that a mortal can beat somebody that cannot die. Of course Dumbledore wouldn't fight Gandalf, so the whole discussion is pointless. Hey; Instead, let's bash Gambon some more...!

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Nov 27th 2007

how do two things being different make them incomparable? some misconceptions. gandalf can die through violence - similar to an elf. also, he is not of the valar, those are the strongest i think 14 of the maiar. and not all but the valar were corrupted by morgoth. I agree with marvin that hes potrayed as weaker in the films, in the movie hes defeated by sauruman but we dont see anything like that in the book. even though hes not valar hed still easily defeat dumbledore.

Posted by ginnypotter719 Nov 27th 2007

LOTR is so much more sophisticated compared to hp. im a big hp fan but the complexity of lotr completely beats jkr....the quality if the film was amazing as well...very entertaining and mature ..gandalf i have to agree is way wiser than dumbledore...for instance if gandalf woud never have foolishly tried on that horcrux ring thing..and he would prolly call dumbledore a fool of a took for doing something stupid like that. theya re incompatible ..his coolness completely outways dumbledore's existence.....GANDALF WINNNSSS!!!!!!!!

Posted by amortentia143 Nov 27th 2007

im a fan of both lotr and hp. but i STILL think that dumbledore can and will kick gandalf's ass--bring him back to life so he would realize what happened, and then kill him again--in a duel.

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Nov 27th 2007

agreed ginnypotter and amortentia dumbledore is too much of a wuss to kill anything really, and again going by the fact that he cant even kill a mortal wizard I doubt he can kill gandalf

Posted by jonno2k8 Nov 27th 2007

gandalf would not win in a fight because dumbeldore made voldamort well scared

Posted by Grnd3lW4Ld Nov 27th 2007

so he made him scared. big deal. he still dueled him and lost (didnt win anyway) look at dumbledores accomplishments compared to gandalfs and then tell me hes a better wizard. What is dumbledores biggest again? getting a 17 year old kid to fight his battles for him?

Posted by BH_Admirer Nov 27th 2007

I wish Ian McKellen had taken the part of Dumbledore, he fits it soooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooooooooooooo MUCH better than Michael Gambon. I'm so sad, because in the HBP movie no on, absoloutly NO ONE, is gonna miss Dumbledore!!!!!!! The movies are soooooooooooooooooooo screwed up.

Posted by UhsFethMalorn Nov 28th 2007

I think Gandalf is stronger emotionally too; he is offered power which he would want to use to do good, and resists it because he knows his weaknesses. Dumbledore died because he wanted power for power's sake.
