Happy New Year!
The MuggleNet team wishes you and your family a safe, happy, and healthy 2008!It has been over ten years now since Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in the United Kingdom. At that time, nobody knew what Harry Potter would become and its impact on the world.
To pay tribute, we have put together a Decade in Review highlighting over 50 news stories from the past ten years which shaped the Potter world we've all had the privilege of living in.
Take a look back and enjoy! As time goes on, we'll continue to use this page to chronicle the biggest stories in the Harry Potter fandom. Don't forget, we also have our 2007 Year in Review at this link. BIG thanks go to Kat, Rachel, Nick, Rosey, and Micah for their help in creating this section!

wow.......go harry potter but isnt kinda of sad that it has come this far....well oh well bring on the future i have my seat belt on...GO HARRY
wow! its time for an end of the year speech and a long needed salute to harry potter! well now how can i start this......ok here we. first off i would like to say what harry potter means to me and most likly to every other harry potter fan. to me (and so many others) harry potter is not just a book or movie, but an actual person to a lot, like jk. harry potter is one of the few things i get up in the morning for, is my obbsession cuz im such a nerd, and a teacher. yes a teacher in many ways. it has been shown a numerous amount of times in the books, films, and jk's owmn words that love and friendship can conquer all! it has been taught to me that you are only one person in this world, and that you need the ones you love and the ones who love you. for with out them, in the words of luna, you are not much of a threat. also, with out harry potter were would we be in the world, i would have already probably jumped off some cliff. and thats no exageration, for when i read the series, it is like a comfort after something terrible has just happened. and i know you think i might just be a nutter, as some people thought of harry, but i just happen to love reading what i think is the best series of all times, and a gift to the world from a woman who is passionate and cares about what is going on in the world, J.K. Rowling. my idle and role model. the person i will always look up to. it is now that i sit here, tears leaking down my checks, i finally say good bye to the loved and always charished series of harry potter. good-bye and good luck! we will all miss you dearly! yours truly allison elyane broyles a friend to harry potter fans every where
tell me how you feel about this comment if you like, agree or disagree
this made me tear up. definitely have to go read it. i'm still quite depressed the series is over. and now mugglecast is ending too. :(
god this sounds amazingly dramatic, but i wouldn't know what i could've done without Harry potter. this has been a part of my life sine i was five years old, and its hard to look back. it's so insane thinking that i finally know whats happened to everyone, yet its still coming. the end hasn't quite hit me yet. no doubt it will sink in in april when MC stops its weekly casts. I'm going to miss this so much.
Very cool...gotta check it out asap
woww. i cant believe so much has happened. i dont kno what i would haev done without the series. its sad that the books are done. but i guess the movies will keep living on. thanks jkr for adding to this decade for all hp readers
did anyone else notice that they name Harry and the Potters for starting wrock? not to be a johnny raincloud or MTV clone, but the switchblade kittens started it.
this is a great review that i will save forever... NOTE TO MUGGLENET STAFF: keep this in your archives!...FOREVER!!!
I love this, it makes you realize how just in a very short time this roller coaster ride started and look at how big it has grown. Very wonderful sucess story makes one feel anything is possible. I believe Harry Potter is one of the best sucess stories as far as having a dream and seeing it come true. J. K. Rowling, Thanks for believing in the magic and helping us all believe in it too, to know anything is possible. If you dream it, believe it, you can make it happen. Never give up on your dreams. Thanks for believing in yourself enough to take the effort and time to not only write Harry Potter, but to keep on trying until you found someone else who believed in it too, and for it to become what it has become to so many of us in the world today and to those of the world of tomorrow as they too discover the wonderful world that you creatated. Thank you, Thank you, from the bottom of this reader's and Harry Potter Fan.
this is great!! it makes you remember how far we've come!
OMG!!! After reading onle the first 3 I started to cry!!! I am soo pathetic!!! THank you so much Mugglenet!!! Now we can relive all the moments in which I probably cried!!! That was such a great idea!!! I love you guys!
I'd write a super mega long speech, seeing as how I believe I am one of the biggest fans, tied with many others, but people might try and eat me, and I'm really tired right now. So everything that's already been said and more, thank you J.K, HARRY, AND EVERYONE WHO'S HELPED THEM ALONG THE WAY!
bravo and encore, love_padfoot and ginervra_weasley and roxy and everyone else who wrote such beautiful tributes to HP. I sure hope Jo reads this, because the series has meant so much to all of us. I first read SS when I was nine (right there in June 1999), and now I'm seventeen - it's been a major part of me for almost half my life. I dressed up as Harry Potter (even as a girl) that first Halloween, and no one who ran into me even knew who I was! Ever since, the series has sat on my overfilled bookshelf (none too often), making the planks sag all by itself in its place of honor at the top. I only discovered online fandom this year (to think what I've missed - mn was created just a few months after I discovered HP!), and it's been what's kept me sane through my senior year mess. The DH release was my first bookstore party, for which I spent weeks sewing my own Luna costume and after which I read and cried, and read and cried, and cried. I wrote my college admissions essay on Harry Potter and how it's influenced me, and I can't imagine having to write it on anything else. The one set of books from my collection I know will be traveling with me to college is Harry Potter, because I know I can never outgrow it. There's my personal review of the best decade ever. We love you, Jo!
SPEW MY FRIEND, THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL!
thanks member_of_SPEW, honestly i think we're clones judging by our experiences. except i'll be going into high school this year, not college. i'm writing a letter to Jo thanking her for everything and giving her the long version of my discovery of potter and love of my fandom family. god, i hope she actually reads it.
wow!! i miss all of it....the hipe, the partys, the premires!!. *sigh* i hope she does the encyclopedia soon!
yay! Happy New Year!!! XxX Joanna XxX
I'm only a teenager, but HP has been such a huge part of my life for almost as long as it's been published here (US). My older sister was reading the books at age 7 or 8, and wanted someone else to talk HP with, so she read them to me, aged 5. I obviously could not comprehend them very well, but somehow I still enjoyed them immensely. My dear older sister read books 1-4 to me, over the course of a year. That's quite a bit of determination for a 7 year old, reading over 1800 pages out loud at all hours of the day and night. Thank you Jo, for influencing my personality and entertaining me for so many years. And of course, thank you to my amazing older sister. I owe you both so much... Oh and member_of_spew, I did the same thing at age 8! weird! maybe great minds think alike :) lol
I can't believe how quickly time has gone by and how it has all happened so fast. I remember reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone when I was just 6 in 1999, and I'd never heard of Harry Potter before in my life. I never dreamed, had no idea, that it would take a place so large in my life, that I'd be on fansites every day, talking to other fans and desperately searching for news. I can't imagine life without Harry Potter and I can't believe how much it has grown. So much has happened so fast that it makes me want to cry (which I have done). But I'll never stop loving Harry Potter, and I'll never stop thanking and appreciating Jo for her creativeness, talent and effort for inventing and writing all about Harry, his friends and his magical world. Thank you, Jo, thank you all us major fans and thank you to everyone who helped bring Harry Potter to life. Happy New Year every one, and make it a good one! :)
^ thanks erised, ginevra, and cristianaeg. *great minds ... like JKR's* :) i've got to say, it's a great new years' getting to read the countdown and all these wonderful tributes to Jo. I sure hope she's reading all this (and that she'll read your letter, ginevra. Wouldn't that be awesome?)
It's amazing how quickly time has passed. I'm not just talking about the past few months, with OOTP and Book 7. But the passed ten years. Harry Potter had influenced the lives of Harry Potter fans everywhere. It's connected all of us from all over the world. It has brought us together to talk and analyse and laugh and cry over these books. Because to us, they aren't just books, they are a lifeline. I appreciate all that Harry Potter has given me. It has given me the chance to meet so many people in this amazing fandom. As the hype continues to die down, I know that the Gryffindor that roars inside of me will never die. Five years from now I never dreamed that Harry potter would play such a huge role in my life. I just want to wish everyone a Happy New Year, I hope you'll make it the best. Never forget how many memories the past ten years have given us. ~Shaeri♥
I can think of one article I know will be on there..
awww it's been a decade.... *tears!* omg... 10 years of Harry Potter. I'm so happy (and lucky) to have been a part of the fandom. It's so funny how much the series has become part of my life. I mean now you go to stores and see the movies, books, action figures, and so much other HP stuff. It's just crazy!! =]
Wow, has it really already been ten years?...Harry Potter means the world to me...the books have been my greatest comfort, a best friend, somewhere I could escape...and it's difficult to comprehend that the series are over because they've been such a huge part of me. Thank you so much, Jo; you've brought millions of people together through your writing...I myself have met such great people on this site and outside, and I'm so grateful for that. I can't imagine my life without HP and know that I'm extremely lucky to have actually experienced it all, I'll never forget my memories with HP! This past decade has been, undoubtedly, an unforgettable and replaceable one; it's been a thrilling adventure. So to everyone at MN, to all my fellow HP fans, have a wonderful New Year and on, don't forget HP, and of course, feast on lots of cheesecake! Let's make 2008 a great one! ~HoNeY
first of all i hope everyone has a wonderful new year =D... at home we'll be having a very simple one but never the less i do have a good feeling about this new year!:P... on the second hand, thanks mugglenet for this great year!... its really very exciting to share my scary obsession for harry potter with mugglenet =D... it really gives me the hibee jibees to think this year is over!... i can still remember the more than 300 days countdown!!... hahahaha!... wow!... im getting old!!... o.O... although the series have already finished (at least for now... who knows!)... its always nice to take notice of how highly important harry potter has been in our lives!... i feel it has realy made of me a true person... i've been able to open my mind to a world as real as my finger!:p... yes, maybe hogwarts doesnt exsist in this world, but our minds i believe are much more grand =D... the series has taught to me to stand up for my friends, family and my very own beliefs... which now that i think of it, makes me quite proud!... even though i admit dealing with mean people who enjoy making fun of my harry potter fanatism wasnt that good at the time xD... but hey!... whats life without a bit of voldy excitement!?:P... well, anyway!... HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!... and avada_kedarvax your comment really tocuhed me!:p... heehee!... and no, i will not forget harry :)
Wow, I was wrong! I was so sure that the Dumbledore announcement and the possibility of a musical would be on there but.. no. Wow, everyone's writing these massive paragraphs!
10 years! Wow! Mugglecast was the first HP podcast! I love you guys! I'm almost crying over here:) I love you casters so much:) I just listened to Andrew's book 7 rap.. I sang along with it! I learned all the words! Don't let it be July! Trust the Brit!
I grew up with the books *sniff sniff* They were released the year after I was born.. My Mom started reading them to me when I was in kindergarden.. I started reading them to my sister 1, 2 years ago. Harry's always been a part of my life. I could never believe it will end one day. After the 7th movie comes out, is mugglenet going to close? I'd die the day it did. I really hope that before Mugglecast closes I'll be able to go to a live premiere:) Have they ever done one in Nashville, TN? Trust the Brit!
What a decade, what a series... NOTHING will ever come close.
I came in on the last five years and am most grateful for doing so. Harry is an important part of our lives and I see no reason for any change though we have the final book. It's only beginning. Thank you Jo, Mugglenet, all of you fellow fans of all ages and of course, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Luna, Neville, Hedwig, Dobby, Sirus, Fred and George, Snape, McGonagall... and Dumbledore!
Any one seen the wise one around? I need to ask them if I can be a cheesecakian.
sorry alastor no wise ones they are NEVER on but you can still chat with us
im a wise one alastormoody
Everyone has such poetic stories about HP to tell... This seems a nice way to end The Year of Potter, hearing each other's tails of a crazed HP obession...
ha i remember u christianaeg.
Happy New Year Guys! Thank you all for being wonderful and motivated!
Wow! Nothing will ever come close to the times we had as fans of harry in the last ten years. I still remember how I had to fight with my parents to buy the first five books bcoz at the time they thought it was stupid. They couldn't have been more wrong. I can truly say that it is one of the most lovely things in my life and oh...all the happy memories. Even though future kids will read the book they will never know the hype and excitement we had through the last decade bcoz they will always know the ending..which we didn't. So hp fans of the world, lets all say THANK YOU JO!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2007 WAS A GREAT YEAR FOR HP!!!! These books changed my life and really addicted me to reading. I started reading at 2 or 3, my parents said. 10 year anniversary!!! I was about to ask where the Decade in Review news post was, but then I saw! Anyway, Happy DECADE TO HARRY POTTER! AND Jo!
