OOTP/HBP director to take us through the end?
Lois Lowry, a children's book writer, has updated her online blog with information about The Giver movie. She had hoped Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince director David Yates would be able to direct The Giver. However:...he has just decided he wants to do the final Harry Potter first, thereby postponing The Giver by several years.
While this is not confirmed by Warner Brothers yet, it appears to be a pretty reliable source. We'll let you know if we know more. Thanks to Ms. Lowry and Leaky for the tip!

cool, i like him
cool, i like him
Interesting. Although I wouldn't 'react' till this is confirmed.
he'll ruin it. but whatever.
well OOTP was my favorite film so far! I would be thrilled to see him continue!
I'll wait to whine or jump up and down until I see HBP.
OOTP is by far my fav film so far i loved what Yates did with it and i am excited for HBP...i would love for himt o do DH...it makes me so excited for it!!! However, i am going to wait for it to be confirmed and also i want to see HBP first before definately saying it would be a good idea for him to do it....it makes sense...he would have been doing it for years in a row...it would flow much more then it would with a different director......
I think Yates did a great job and im excited to see what he does with HBP. If he holds true like he did w OOTP i think it would be a great thing for him to complete the series. TOP TEN.. woohoo thats a first
well just because he'll like to doesnt mean he'll get to.
hm i'm kind of ambiguous on this; i liked ootp a lot but it could have been better. And it maybe/probably just means he is considering DH and would take it over this, meaning he would postpone this, but not necessarily that Warner Bros. has cleared him yet. (but they're making a movie of the giver? hmmm)
hmmm interesting ... we'll just have to wait and see if it's confirmed or not ...
If I was him I'd hold on to it and not let it go!! :)
I figured he would. Order of the Phoenix was amazing-- but a lot was cut out. I hope it isn't the same for DH-- I'd be pretty dissapointed if a lot of it was missing.
to be honest yes yates has cut things out in ootp....and i wouldn;t worry at all at the moment of him cutting extracts out fo the DH movie mainly because i think it is more likely it is going to be made into two films so everything can be put in....if you notice it says :' ''postphoning the giver for SEVERAL YEARS'' which makes me think there will be two movies....it doesn;t take several year to do one movie which makes em think he will be doing more then one if he did it........i can;t wait to see if this is confirmed or not :D
good point sticky, that is a good clue.
maybe it was just a nice way of saying he didnt want to do the Giver, so he made it up that he was doing DH.
i really like him. i hope he gets its. and Jill, how would he ruin it?
the people who dont like him dont know what an adaptation is. he did have some transition problems but he captured a new atmosphere for OoTP.
You no what, if that ass directs all the rest, I blame no one but JKR. After what he did to the 5th movie how dare she let him any where near the other movies. This might be the best thing for "The Giver." Maybe they can find another director and anyone is better then this assclown!!! To be honest I don't care anymore, after that terriable 7th book, I have moved on from Harry Potter. I remember when I use to visit this site 3 times a day now, I come hear about once a month to see how Yates is going to ruin the 6th movie. No Gaunts, no Fleur..he doing a great job with that!!
Considering Ootp is the worst movie (aside from the effects shots and the fact that Luna and Umbridge were done so fantastically) I'm not even liking the prospect of Yates's HBP let alone DH. They need Cuaron back, DEFINITELY. After the dire way Sirius's death was handled and how bad the Dursleys scene was, Yates shouldn't have been let anywhere near HP again!! Mind you, I'm still hoping we see an extended version of Ootp at some point. We still haven't seen the full Snape flashback or various other scenes like the one we saw shots of with McGonagall in a wheelchair.
Will reserve judgement until HBP... but based on OOTP, I so far have one reaction: WOOOOOOO!!! YAY!! WHOOT! =]
Yes ! I hoped for someone new but Yates is fine with me. Best movie so far, and he had the longest (and arguably one of the weakest) book to make, he can only get better now.
Oh no... I am also not going to make a huge reaction until this is absolutely confirmed, but if it is... I am going to be a little bit disappointed. If Yates is to direct DH, I sure as hell hope that he doesn't do the same to the 7th movie that he did to OoTP. I'm sorry, but that movie was BUTCHERED! It was the single worst Harry Potter movie out of the series. It had the greatest effects, and the duel between Voldy and Dumbledore was absolutely amazing, but as for doing the book justice, a darn horrible job was done on the 5th movie. I only hope that he learns from his mistakes, and doesn't wreck Deathly Hallows.
I just hope that JKR know what a bad book, book 7 was and Yates knows that movie 5 was bad also.
um.... ok, but I really wanted the director of the third movie to do it... :(
uhm... whats 'The Giver'?? its not a hp movie, is it? cuz if it is then i missed that book......
yeahhh!! david yates is awesome! WAY better than any other director of the hp films so far. and also: the giver is a book by lois lowry.
Eew, how could you root for director of PoA? He did such a bad job, it was nothing like the books and didn't even stand well on its own! I think Yates would be good, but shouldn't they give someone else a chance?
This is exciting news. I hope he's not too worn down by Half-Blood Prince. If he does Deathly Hallows, he'll have directed the most Harry Potter of anybody out there. As long as he keeps everything fresh and exciting, he'll do a fine job, I think.
Interesting. I hope he does a good job if he is directing it. I like the Giver. :)
i am very excited now as this almost also confirms the last film being split into two films!!!! I've looked at it more carefully now, but if you notice as i have said before he says if he does direct the last film or shoudl i say films lol, he would have to postphone The Giver for 'several years'. If i am not mistaken a Potter movie doesn't take 'several years' to make therefore he must be doing more than one if you get what i mean...i could be wrong but that is the impression it gives me...he would only have to delay the Giver for at least one maybe two years not several if DH was ot be one film. Also, carrying on from that hidden in what he says, there is also no hesitation in what he says about delaying Giver for several years, he seems certain that he WILL have to postpone it for several years....so it is decided??? It seems he knows it is to be two films not one...another clue?? or am i just reading into it too much?? lol :)
his pacing issues ruined the 5th one for me. he didnt linger on any scene, which gave the movie no feel or emotion. sirius death was just "oh shhh, he died, on to the next scene!" that could have been a really intense and heartbreaking scene but it just moved to quickly. thats why i think he'll ruin the best book of the series.
oh yeah, that last comment was directed to kyleftw826.
HOORAYYYYYYYYYYY ! Party party party! ;) Oh wow. Mother. Wow. ;] I love this piece of news. Totally made me happy for today. Oh myyy. I hope this bit of news is trueeeeeeee. I absolutely LOVEE David Yates! Order of the Phoenix was REALLY good, and I'm sure that Half-Blood Prince will be too. OH ! Deathly Hallows would be perfect with him!
I would be so excited if he directs all 3. That would make them flow together quite nicely, and I really like what he did with OOTP. He left out things that were okay to be left out and included as much of the plot that he could. I hope he does direct DH!! Good point about the "several years" comment sticky. I noticed that too, but she could just be exaggerating. Man I hope this is true!!
Cuaron would do an amazing job with deathly hallows. PoA is hands down the best so far.also, i think it would be hilarious to see Terry Gilliam take on a harry potter movie. that would be banananananas! haha
@sticky: i still agree with you, but it's possible that it could be "several years" for another reason: The other movies have had to be completed in a little over a year each, which is a strain, so that the actors don't age too much. But DH is the end of this problem, so they might stretch out the process from a year and a couple months to two? I don't know.
ummm...I would not want David Yates to direct the final film. I mean he has brought darkness yes, and is going to fill most of HBP with love interest and relationships growing but I think if he wanted to make HBP good he would focus on the Dumbledore and Harry relationship which would make movie 7(if they do leave this in) the emotional frustation that Harry feels much more real and intagonizing. So yeah... -E.W.7.
uh, i dont want yates directing...he didnt do such a good job with the 5th movie...but this isnt confirmed yet, so we'll see!
I want Alfonso Cuaron, the director of the third film to do this one. David Yates cuts out WAY too much from the books. Alfonso cut a lot out of POA too, but nothing that was horribly important. Alfonso has been really the best HP film director yet because he stuck to the book when he did POA. He needs to come back and direct the final HP movie.
OMG did you see the news about emma and dan on perezhilton? i hope its not true
This is excellent. I hope it's true. I loved OOTP. Yates did a wonderful job getting the emotion out of Dan. The scenes with him and Gary Oldman were really wonderful. Still hate Emma Watson, but there's nothing that can be done about that now.
It's not the director who butchers the movie... The screenwriter, producers (it's Hollywood u know...)
hmm...i dont know. True, the effects of the 5th movie were awsome, but they BUTCHERED the book! A lot was cut out! i dont want to see Deathly Hallows having the same end....and as for cutting DH in to two: NO FREAKING WAY!!! hell no! Why cant they just make Deathly Hallows into an longer film??? I mean, ALL the lord of the rings are almost 3 hours (except the 3rd which is 3 hours). Why cant harry be the same?? Just give me director that will be loyal to the source, makes the movie totally kick ass and makes it ONE whole movie.
The Giver movie? there's one i wouldn't see at gunpoint! lol I want Columbs back, i think he was the most loyal to the books and that's what i really want to see in DH... OotP was too choppy i thought, not really a sense of time passage, and no single scene was longer then 3 min...
OH NO!!!!!! I hope he doesn't direct the last movie, he'll completely ruin it!!!! Oh well...... :(
forever_charmed, its the director that has visionary control over the movie. they have the power to say "i dont like how this screenwriter is interpreting the book" and fire them.
YaY! I heart David Yates! I think that OotP was the best of all the HP movies. I really do hope he does a good job with Deathly Hallows, and that he doesn't have a ton of stuff cut out. And some people are being way to harsh. Yeah, a ton was cut from OotP, but then again, it was a really long book. And Yates did a really good job with what he did keep in the movie. I just hope that Deathly Hallows is done more justice. Well as long as it isn't Alfonso Cuaron, I'm happy.
I wasn't exactly blown away by OOTP, too many parts were missing. But I suppose he did his best, with the book being soooo long and all. As long as HBP is good ( it's my favourite book ) I'll be okay with it.
Oh i sure hope not. I did not like OOTP, and i am not a big fan of this director. I feel the film was poorly done with what greatness there was to work with, and i am hoping that i am not saying this after HBP...and i shudder at the thought of what could be the outcome of DH, even if he has what could be 2 movies to work with.
