OOTP/HBP director to take us through the end?
Lois Lowry, a children's book writer, has updated her online blog with information about The Giver movie. She had hoped Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince director David Yates would be able to direct The Giver. However:...he has just decided he wants to do the final Harry Potter first, thereby postponing The Giver by several years.
While this is not confirmed by Warner Brothers yet, it appears to be a pretty reliable source. We'll let you know if we know more. Thanks to Ms. Lowry and Leaky for the tip!

Guys... OotP was the best HP movie so far, and I HATED all the others. Yates is my freakin' idol, and if he finishes then we will finally have some continuity. And continuity is priceless when it comes to these movies. Aren't you all sick of how every movie is extremely different? Yates did what the others didn't; he combined and made a true sequel. On the other hand, The Giver was one of my favorite books as a child, so I hope that they get a good director. :/
NO! David Yates was terrible in OotP. He cut out way too many things, he ruined the trios acting, and doesn't seem to be too enthusiastic of the books or films. He's way too bland, but thats just my opinion. I don't get why everyone hated Cuaron. He followed everything except the Marauders Map. Cuaron is God comparedt o Yates.
NOOOOO!!!! SAY IT AINT SO!! it can't be! I was actually afraid of this. i'm not even bother gonna see this movie now. Yates isn't a good director like at all! OOTP was such a disspointment! I wasn't even looking foward to HBP at all and now they're going to ruin Deathly Hallows. OMG if he leaves anything out of Deathly Hallows I WILL SCREAM! How can they give the most long awaited movie to him?!! How??!! It should be TIm Burton or Alfonso Cuaron. No-One else!! DAM YOU WARNER BROTHERS!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I really hope not. He did not do order of the phoenix justice. He is focusing too much on the "love" "teenage angst" aspect. Yes thats important but thats not what the story is mainly about. I want some one who will sticl true to the last book. Not turn it into some frilly love story with some action thrown in. I mean come on the shortest film?? He cut important plot out and added new stuff. If you have room for your own plots you obviously had room for the real story. Who knows. Maybe he will change his ways and make a great movie.
angelina_johnson92: hehe I totally agree. I worship the ground Alfonso walks on, especially after seeing 'Children of Men', one of the best films ever made. POA was the only HP film true to the books and that portrayed the charaters correctly in my opinion. OOTP sucked, it had no character development, had way to much missing and was in general just a huge dissapointment. The only thing i liked about OOTP was that the Twins got lots of screen time, (i'm a big Fred and George fan hehe). POA on the other hand was dark and funny and creative and original. Alfonso's a friggin genius man! Why didn't they ask him back? As i said before: DAM YOU WARNER BROTHERS!
this blows, david yates sucks...but i never knew that they were making a movie for the giver thats awesome
Honestly I was very angry with OotP. The movie was crap compared to the book. Yates left so much detail from the movie. And look at how Fleur's not even in HBP!!!! How do you expect for a wedding to happen, which HAS to, when it hasn't even been announced. It's awful!!! I would hate to see how he would handle Deathly Hallows. I'll just wait until I see how he does HBP. If it's great, then I'll reconsider. I think maybe the director that did Pirates(Gore V) should do the last movie. He'd do a great job!!!!!
HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only problem is, I think he would mess up the 7th movie.
NOOOOO! sigh. I liked some elements of the OotP movie, like how they used the newspapers to show the news and stuff, but the overall movie was certainly not my favorite. I think it'll be OK, but he won't do it justice and I think another director could do it better. Cool they're making a Giver movie though. I wonder if they'll do it in black and white at first? Until he starts Seeing?
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!! He will ruin what is supposed to be the best book. Think of all of the things he cut out of the OOTP; he didn't focus much attention on Kreacher, who plays an important role in Deathly Hallows. He's the worst thing that ever happened to the Harry Potter movies. He's going to ruin the HBP for sure, but he better not ruin my favorite book out the bunch! These sort of things make me furious! Somone should just go shoot him already and be done with.
That would be great! : )
i hope not! he could never do DH justice!
I find this news both sad and disappointing.
That's cool that he is thinking about doing the rest of the films. OOTP was a really great movie, the best HP movie by far. It's also really cool about David Yates thinking of doing The Giver movie because i'm reading that book in school and it would be cool to see the movie being done by someone who i know can put together a great movie.
Cuar
OMG I'm SO excited!! I don't care what anyone else says, I LOVED how he directed OOTP!! I thought he was incredibly creative (i loved the newspaper clippings to summarize certain parts). The first time I saw OOTP I hated it because it was so different from the book; but I realized that in order to make a film in the alotted time frame they have to cut and alter certain bits of the book. So anyways, I'm SO HAPPY that he will (possibly) be directing the final two films!! YAY!!
Whoa...I just can't wait til everything is confirmed. I didn't know there was gonna be a movie of the Giver! It's such a good book!
I wasn't totally thrilled with OoTP, so i'm not excited at all about this... but it doesn't surprise me at all if he does finish out the series. it'd make sense. my favorite of the 4 movies was GoF- why not bring that director back? LOL anyhoo... the giver as a movie?! that would be... interesting. haha.
Count me among those who did not care for Yates' work in the last film. Too much stuff crammed into too little time. No flow - just a series of jarring images. I hope that this story does not pan out. Give me PoA director again, please. This issue seems to be apolar, doesn't it?
I may kill myself if this is true ...
I could not be more excited!!! I was hoping that this would happen now my fingers are crossed for the confirm.
For those of you who are happy: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!? HAVE YOU EVEN SEEN OotP!? It wasn't only the worst HP movie, it was one of the worst movies ever made! All Yates cares about is 'sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll'. WHERE THE HELL DOES IT SAY HBP HAS SEX, DRUGS AND ROCK N ROLL IN IT!? I wouldn't be surprised if he cut the most important scenes in DH and replaced them with Harry and Ginny time. He'll probably have them have sex with the way he is talking about HBP.
Like ronstew, I liked the PoA movie best. Alfonso Cureon or something, I can't spell it. It was good though. Just not Yates, unless it's cut into two films because I think part of the problem with OotP was that it was too short and two movies may allow them to feel less pressured to condense and maybe Yates really is a good director, I'm just biased because they had to cut down OotP. (Like my lovely run-on sentence?)
I would be okay with it if Yates was to direct DH...OotP was my favorite movie so far. But I would rather Chris Columbus come back to do it. Prisoner of Azkaban was my least fave film, so I don't want Cuaron. But I thought the first two movies were truest to the books. I know they were shorter and therefore it was easier, but I really lost the feeling of HP after the second movie. What's with all the modern clothes in the middle of the school day? Please, please have it be Columbus or Yates!
Columbus would make it all frilly nilly. seems like action and darkness arent his forte. newell would do pretty well i think. better than yates, at least
It would be nice for continuity sakes, not having different visions all thrown together, though it's really hard to say till this is confirmed/denied, and of course till we see how he did with HBP.
if yates directs the last two films i will be really bad about it. ootp was so bad, i have watched it several times, but i can't get anything more out of it except a bunch of random stuff from the book all smashed together. there is was too much stuff cut out of that movie. it stunk. :.( it was way too short for the book. and seeing as hbp is my absolute favorite book(i have read it five times and i am in the middle of the sixth) he would do that movie total injustice. dh should be directed so that there is nothing cut out either. i say they should use the book as the script. well, anyway i hope columbus comes back for the last two movies.
I vote no for Yates. I mean if you're one of those people that doesn't read the books I understand how you would like ootp but man I have to admit i was disappointed. I was really hoping someone else would be up for Deathly Hallows. Either way its not like I'm not going to watch the movie. In the end they can't make everyone happy so whatever.
NOOO!! no wayy...this is the worst news ever!! i just hope it's not true. when i saw OOTP..i wasn't sad..i wasn't disappointed..I WAS FURIOUS!..that movie was just so bad i couldn't belive i waited 2 flipping year to see that mediocre adaptation crappy as HELL!!. When i came out of the theater no one was even talking about the movie..maybe just "yeah..it was ok"...but nothing compared to the rush of excitement that POA and even GOF left in the atmosphere at the end of the movie.. OOTP just came way too big on Yates..(as i'm sure HBP did with his poor decision making)...he should go back to his soap operas on TV
hmm. this kind of disappoints me, but then it doesn't. ootp definitely isn't my favorite, and i'm not exactly sure how he would do with dh...others probably won't agree but i think cuaron would actually be good for dh. and okay just listen. because i know, compared to the book, poa is horrible. so much was left out, that DIDN'T need to be left out. but that movie for me, captures the atmosphere or FEEL of hp the most for me. and that's what the director really creates isn't it? he didn't make all the decisions as to what would be in the script or what scenes would be in did he? sorry if i'm wrong about all that...i'm not a film major or anything lol. but yeah...that's my opinion on it all.
I would rather have someone elso. I didnt love OOTP, maybe just because it was so rushed, but it had to be. If they make DH a two part film, then i think he could great.
I am bittersweet with regards to Yates directing the final and best film of the series. Order of the Phoenix was not terrible, but it was not as amazing as i thought it would be either. This is, in part, Yate's fault, but you also have to remember who he reports to in the case of Harry Potter: Warner Brothers. They are the ones who hire the directors. They give the directors the movie they are doing, the exact length of time it should be (Not a second more or a second less), and the time span in which it should be done. If Warner Brothers gives David Yates a movie length time of 2 hours and 30 minutes, how is it supposed to justify a 765-page book? The blame of the short movie length time lies with WB and them alone. However, i still believe Yates should have watched the length and importance of scenes more. For example, the scene with Fred and George leaving went a bit longer than i thought it would. While it was funny, viewers could have gotten the gist of it in around half the time, and he could have used that extra time wisely by making, for example, the scene with Sirius's death longer or the scene in Dumbledore's office after his death longer... or even could have added a new element to the movie that he previously cut out! Yates did not truly understand the importance of some elements in the story.
No!!! I despise the way Yates botched up OOTP. it was my favorite book until Deathly Hallows came out, and I do NOT want to see Yates ruin both movie versions of my favorite books. Lets bring back Chris Columbus. I thought his versions of Stone and Chamber were amazing. He would do wonders with Deathly Hallows.
wow...yay...thats awesome for 2 reasons: a) he'll do hpdh and b) he's directing the giver!! awesome stuff!
wow...yay...thats awesome for 2 reasons: a) he'll do hpdh and b) he's directing the giver!! awesome stuff!
I just hope that he doesn't make this movie as choppy and confusing as OotP!! And I hope that there isn't as much left out.
how can i say this.... I WANT CUARON OR STEVEN SPEILBERG I HATE DAVID YATESI WANT CUARON OR STEVEN SPEILBERG I HATE DAVID YATESI WANT CUARON OR STEVEN SPEILBERG I HATE DAVID YATESI WANT CUARON OR STEVEN SPEILBERG I HATE DAVID YATESI WANT CUARON OR STEVEN SPEILBERG I HATE DAVID YATESI WANT CUARON OR STEVEN SPEILBERG I HATE DAVID YATESI WANT CUARON OR STEVEN SPEILBERG I HATE DAVID YATES
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone but David Yates! I mean anyone, my dog could do a better job dircting than that man. I mean all the stuff he left out and added and changed in OOTP that was painful to watch. And it appears that he is turning HBP into a romantic comedy...it will be horrible if he gets a hold of DH.
YESSSSSS!!!!!!!!
oh i really hope yates doesnt do dh! ootp is my favorite book and i was REALLY REALLY disappointed with the movie! i wish yates wasnt doing hbp either, no fleur...dursleys...this sucks! i hope he doesnt do dh!!! but on the upside i love the book the giver, so im excited there will be a movie! although i hope yates doesnt direct that either!
OOTP was my fave hp movie to date and I think HBP will hopefully be great, but I am not sure I want him to end the series. I think it is time for some fresh blood!
He would be really good.
hmm. i dunno how i feel about this yet. i thought he did okay with OotP. i guess i was hoping for a fresh director for the final film but if he does better with HBP, then he may change my mind. and besides, if they decide to cut DH into two parts, i definitely support their Yates as the director. with all that time, i think he would do an amazing job.
Wow, the headline for this should be "Let's Try to Ruin Book 7".
I REALLY hope this isn't true, i didn't think he did that great of a job with OotP and was not happy about him doing HBP.
To Hell with David, i'm sorry I don't like David!!! He scwered up on OotP,And he is makinh HBP just the same. What's up with cutting all these people?! Hah,i'm NOT a big fanic about his directing!!!! Please just let David do,''The Giver'' and leave HP alone forever!!! xD If he does DH..[GRRR] I with really send him hate letters, lol. But,as much as I love Jo&HP, Jo needs to tell David NOT to direct DH...Or he might just mess up DH,just like OotP and HBP[soo far] I think David[to me] is the wrost HP director,...Lol. Yupp,I think WB should bring back a former HP director, I really liked,Chris Colum

Also OotP was/is my favorite book..But I kinda stopped liking it alot after David directed it! :/
I really hope he does direct the final film as well. I thought that OotP was definitely the best movie yet. It wasn't cheesy and it had more depth than the other ones. I really don't understand how people could have not liked OotP.
what is wrong with everybody. yates is the FIRST director to show trio how they are in the books, no more pansy ron or superbad hermione and harry was angsty and nervous and everything. all three of them were amazing in ootp and acted like there characters FINALLY! i am so pleased with ootp because he gets that we fell in love with the characters, you cant just slap on a name and face because we KNOW THEM, we know better. im so happy hes staying for the sixth and will be thrilled if he stays til dh because he will be so comfortable in it by then and everyone will be so together on it, dh would be the best two (hopefully) movies yet! ........ and who in their right MINDS would want speilburg?! he would hollywood the heart right out of the movie, it would be nothing but explosions and action and make out scenes, i for one want to see tears in rons eyes when he the locket taunts him, i want to cry in every death, i want to believe harrys dead when hagrid is carrying him! you know, jeeze............!!!!!!!! !!!! im so excited either way!!!!!!!! but.... I VOTE YATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!
As long as Yates is of the mind-set that he WILL NOT cut Deathly into two films, I'm all for him directing the final movie. Has he said anything on that matter? OotP was great for how little time they had to fit the book into. Yes, they cut a lot. But the book is more than 800 pages long. What they did keep in flowed nicely and told a good story. As Potter fanatics, we all want the movies to be extended about ten hours to fit every, single, minute detail, but that's obviously unrealistic. Anyway, Yates gets my approval. Not that it really matters. :]
