OOTP/HBP director to take us through the end?
OOTP/HBP director to take us through the end? Lois Lowry, a children's book writer, has updated her online blog with information about The Giver movie. She had hoped Order of the Phoenix and Half-Blood Prince director David Yates would be able to direct The Giver. However:

...he has just decided he wants to do the final Harry Potter first, thereby postponing The Giver by several years.

While this is not confirmed by Warner Brothers yet, it appears to be a pretty reliable source. We'll let you know if we know more. Thanks to Ms. Lowry and Leaky for the tip!

I didn't like the fifth movie. It was an amazing book, and I understand that they did have to cut things out of it, after all, if they hadn't, the movie would have been hours longer than it was. But some of what they did put in, and the way the warped what was put it was so ridiculous that I couldn't stand it. If anyone else liked it, yay for you. But come on, HARRY GAVE LUCIUS THE PROPHECY! What was that all about? And when it broke? EVERYONE HEARD IT! THAT WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN! And I must say, the most hysterical scence in any Harry Potter movie has got to be when Voldemort has attempted to posses Harry and Harry starts to talk to him. This guy has already screwed up the 6th book by taking characters out (i.e. Fleur) I just hope he doesn't do anything stupid like leaving out the locket AGAIN. If he directs the 7th movie, I'll probably go see it cause no matter what he does to it, it will still be Harry Potter. And as for the 7th movie being split into two, why stop at two? Let's split it into seven and hide the pieces around the world! It would be like one big horcrux hunt! I really don't think that Lois Lowry's coment means that the movie is going to be split into two. The projected release date for the 7th movie is what, 2010? Last time I checked, they weren't even done with the 6th film yet, so producing those two movies just might take two or three years.

ummmm...Please don't. Our journey has been long enough. He won't do a good job. He has no idea of what is important.

wow i've noticed from all these comments that a lot of fans want Cuaron back to direct Deathly Hallows. I totally agree, i'm so glad i'm not the only one who thinks that. POA is still the best movie, totally original, creative, dark and funny. Are you even listening Warner Brothers?!! WE WANT CUARON BACK!! NO MORE YATES!! Maybe if someone from Warner Brothers read these comment pages, then they would realise what most of the HP fans want instead of making stupid bad decisions. Who the hell decided that Mike Newell should direct GOF!?? he was terrible! And who in God's name decided that OOTP would only be 2 hours 20 minutes long. It should have an extra hour!!! Whoever keeps making these stupid decisions needs a kick up the butt pronto!

this is great news to me, i like what Yates gave us in the OOTP movie. although i did wish that he didnt had to take so much out of it, i understand the decision he made of following a main plot to create the storyarc that will be built with HBP and DH. its a tough decision that obviously didnt please everybody, but it had to be done, and so far, we got a pretty good movie out of it.

Everybody is ragging on Yates for OotP. I agree that the movie was nowhere near what the book was, but, you have to remember that the director is handed a script and that

People seem to either love/hate Cuaron's directing style, as for me, i thought he was not too bad. In regards to DH, I think it should be kept as one (reasonably lengthy) movie, obviously not too long tho coz you have to understand that there are non-hp fans that would see it also, but long enough to keep faithful to the book and leave all the important bits in. To the people who say that David Yates is needed for DH in order to keep it 'flowing' - well, provided he does a decent job with HBP, im confident that any good director that is a fan of the books and familiar with the plot, will keep the flow. If it was up to me, i would choose Peter Jackson to direct it but we know that aint gonna happen as he will be busy with The Hobbit.

Overall i enjoyed the Order of the phoenix adaptation, but the battle at the end, between Voldemort and Dumbledore - well, it was great, but it was meant to be EPIC. Ya know what i mean? I think it couldve been epic if it was Richard Harris instead of Michael Gambon tho....couldve been a real winning formula...Point is, what if Yates does the same thing with Harry/Voldemort's final confrontation in DH? That scene has got to be a masterpiece

Ok I'm going to try this again. My comments are not making it in for some reason. Here goes. Everybody is ragging on Yates for OotP. I agree, the movie was nowhere near what the book was, But you have to remember that a director is handed a script and that's what he directs. The writers are the ones who butchered OotP. OotP was a fiasco compared to the book. The movie for Movie's sake was fantastic. If you didn't read the book, the movie was great. If you read the book once, it was great. If you read it a half a dozen times, the movie stunk. There was so much left out for the storyline. Lets just hope the writer for DH is someone who is passionate of the series. Someone who has actually read the book with fervor and really loves the series as much as us fans love the series. Hey, let Stephen King write it. He's dark enough to give the edge it needs, and smart enough to give all of the parts that are needed to make OotP the best of the series. JK did a genious with the book, the movie should be genious too!!!!

DariansDad -- I responded to you around comment 130, but I'll try it again. Yes, the script was weak... BUT... Yates was mostly to blame for OotP's defects -- most of my friends who watched the movie (and don't read the books) felt it was the weakest in series to date. Why? First, the pacing. The director is 100% responsible for the pacing, tone and *direction* of the movie. Yates failed miserably. There was no middle, there was intro, intro, intro, climax. It felt slow and plodding through 2/3 of the movie and the last 1/3 was incredibly rushed. He took one of the longer books in the series and created the shortest movie -- how exactly does that work? The portions cut and the parts that remain are not the scriptwriter, they are the director. Remember, Rowling herself had to tell Yates that if he cut Kreacher, the seventh movie will be screwed. Rowling didn't tell the scriptwriter, she told the director. Why? Because his duties are to cut and arrange the movie so that the pacing and flow work. It wasn't the scriptwriter's fault that Sirius' death had the emotional appeal of a walnut. It wasn't the scriptwriter's fault that the Voldemort/DD duel wasn't even 1/10 as impressive as anything in Star Wars. It wasn't the scriptwriter's fault that Yates could not bring Harry's internal struggles adequately to the big screen. The battle was supposed to be EPIC and it was average. Sirius' death was the only one that actually made me cry in the entire series and I felt nothing watching the movie. If Yates can't handle the emotional gravitas of Sirius' death, how will he handle Dumbledore (nevermind Fred, Tonks and Lupin)? If Yates can't deal with an epic battle like the Ministry, how will he deal with the dual Hogwarts' battles? If Yates couldn't bring Harry's internal struggle to screen, how will he handle the ultimate climax -- the confrontation of Harry and Voldy, which (instead of having visual effects driving it) has a mostly intellectual and intuit...

David Yates ruined OotP, and I can't wait to see how he is screwing up the next one. This guy is going to bring the Harry Potter film series to its downfall. So fan, Prisoner of Azkaban has been my favorite film, and it'd be best if Afonso or Chris Columbus would return to the helm, and for John Williams to give music to the last film.

lol kerr if you read correctly you will see the vote is about split evenly. id say about 25% want yetes or columbus back ~32.5% want cuaron and ~32.5% want yates. and since ive only heard arguments that say cuaron has barely any time so he prolly wont do it.... i think yates is a more likely candidate

Posted by phoenixmandc Feb 22nd 2008

well all the directors at least gave it their best shot (cept alfonso) so any one of them coming back (cept alfonso) is okay with me. honestly now that JKR has finished writing the series i think she should have the time to direct DH

In my opinion, OOTP was the only movie that was nearly BETTER than the book, the book is one of my least favorite HP books
