Study finds 'Potter' can be addicting
Study finds 'Potter' can be addicting As if anyone needed to tell us this, MTV published an article earlier today about research concluding that the Harry Potter series can in fact be addicting. The story notes:

In a just-finished study that's being submitted to the Journal of General Psychology, psych professor Dr. Jeffrey Rudski and two of his undergrad students at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, report that they found characteristics of addiction in at least 10 percent of the 4,000 Potter fans they polled online.

While the doctor discusses that the end of the series did have serious withdrawal symptons for some, likening it to going off a drug "cold turkey," he also said he chose to do the study on the end of the boy wizard's saga over the conclusion of the hit series The Sopranos because of his 15-year old daughter and the things she's taken from it:

"She's picked up guitar because she wants to be in a wizard-rock band," he said. "She's studying Latin because she wants to better understand J.K. Rowling's choices of names for her characters. She started reading Stephen King and John Irving because they spoke with Rowling at Radio City two summers ago." If that's being an addict, he's down with it.

Im an Hp addict.

Posted by skadiblue Feb 23rd 2008

Hahaha I actually took these survey things. Somehow they got to me in an e-mail. So I guess I am a part of this study, and I'm probably in that 10%. Lol.

Posted by Snivella Feb 23rd 2008

Harry Potter? Addictive? Why, no, of course not. hehem. give me mine!!

Posted by tiassa Feb 23rd 2008

LoonyLoopyLuna-your dad is awesome. By the way can you guys imagine someone in a dark corner of your school with a hooded clock coming up to you and offering a book to you("Its good for you")?

Posted by magiclover Feb 23rd 2008

addict=person controlled by some habit. I don't think we are addicted we can stop when we want to ,but it's so AWESOME THAT WE WILL NEVER STOP!!!!personaly these books have helped me so much it has made my life change and I know I'm not the only person who is like that so what I'm trying to say is we are not addicted but we will not live with out it (if you get what I mean)=)

Posted by Quiscalus Feb 23rd 2008

Yeah, I could've told you that without any studies. :/

Posted by MiracleMira Feb 23rd 2008

Study finds 'Potter' can be addicting ahaha that just made my day. Not that we here needed any research to tell us that, but it's cool that there's scientific proof of it now LOL. I too started reading Stephen King and John Irving since they did that thing with Jo :) I'd like to take that poll and find out if I qulify as "an addict" just for the title you know.

Posted by felena90 Feb 23rd 2008

Addicting? Well, surely it is - but obviously not in the negative meaning! I've been totally addicted to the series since I read the first page of Philosopher's Stone - so addicted, in fact, that I: first, fell in love with the UK; second, chose English as my major subject in the uni and third, had to learn blind typing when I decided to try to translate Order of the Phoenix into my native language (Russian). Took me two years to complete it too! I can't really think of any other book - any other thing at all - that gave me such a motivation for development. So yes, thank you, Jo, for creating such an addicting masterpiece!!

Posted by NathalieCastle Feb 23rd 2008

WOW! They kinda discovered America! I mean, was it necessary to make a whole article about this? Oh, Jesus! Thiss might be TOO serious! I mean, these fans are learning Latin and are making bands about Harry Potter, THEY ARE RUINING THEIR LIVES!!!! How will they recuperate!?!?!? b Come on, people, since when learning latin and learning how to play instruments made any wrong? Isn't it actually supposed to be good? What are we going to DO!?!!? HP fans are actually writing fan fiction!!! They are writing stories and those stories are critiziced by other fans!! They are going to die because of that!! NOOOO!!! And then, what about people who speak other languages as me that want to improve their English so as to understand the original book? Men, those HP fans are totally out of their minds, they are ruining their lives reading books, improving their languages, learning Latin, writing stories, throwing HP parties, meeting other Harry Potter fans around the world, doing fan art!!! What's the point of that MTV article? Advise what we already know, that HP is addictive? That that addiction is actually good? Come on, they even asked psychologists to help them, as if anybody even needed someone to tell them! Peace, Nath alieCastle PS: sorry about my spelling mistakes!

Posted by emma_holloway Feb 23rd 2008

What a waste of time. Anyone of us could have told them so much.

Posted by snuffles101 Feb 23rd 2008

HAH! As if we didn't know this already. It's better than being addicted to all those stupid drugs and such. We've just got a slight obession with a certain boy wizard with messy hair, green eyes, glasses, and a quite dramatiac life. There's nothing wrong with that. And I'm sure we've all wanted to join a wizard rock band and learn latin at some point in our lives, not to mention go to every Harry Potter related event our town has ever had and dress up for the midnight releases of the books and the movies. But it's better than going to an AA meeting. :D

Posted by _Kettleburn_ Feb 23rd 2008

I definitely laughed out loud when I read the heading! At least we're addicted to something good, not something harmful or whatever! It's books, for goodness sakes! (Very good books at that!!!) I a proud addict to Harry Potter!!!

Posted by snapelova Feb 23rd 2008

yeah, im addicted...so what?? lol....who would actually be sad enough to set up a survey to find out if its addictive?

Posted by roxorgirl13 Feb 23rd 2008

like we didnt already know this! :D

Posted by 13hplover13 Feb 23rd 2008

comment one=wtfish r u doin on this site if you think harry potter fandom is not having a life? :-) oooh so true...I bet I've spent longer doing harry potter stuff than any druggie has spent smoking/injecting/sniffin g!! My daily fix: mugglenet, phoenixsong, mugglecast, tons of wrock, amazon DH forum and a healthy dose of fiendfyre whiskey!

Posted by HarryPotterFreakers Feb 23rd 2008

i have known that i was, but for a study to prove it is pretty cool. When i didnt have a book to read, i would find a related book, discussing what could happen. When we waited for the 7th book, i wrote my own, to see what could possibly happen. I have five wands, a time turner, a galleon, knut, and a sickle. 2 harry potter statues, and liiterally about a 1000 other things. My entire room is a "shrine" to harry potter.

Posted by TheDogStar12 Feb 23rd 2008

Haha, yes, Harry Potter may be addicting. I won't deny that... But considering what other things kids can get addicted to these days, it's a good addiction. Taking up guitar, studying Latin, and reading other books because of Harry Potter... that's not a bad thing, is it? ^_^

Posted by Dobbysgirl13 Feb 23rd 2008

BWAHAHAHA this is the funniest news piece ever!!! Well duh!!! I can't wait to hear about this on Mugglecast!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They should be glad! BWAHAHAHAH

Posted by voldy_x3 Feb 23rd 2008

addicted? US? pshh...naahhhh. haha but i do love how they published an arcticle on this....and how they studied it. And how they just realized this when the evidence is clearly all around them. lol. harry potter > real life. [usually] XD

Posted by citylove3583 Feb 23rd 2008

hahahahah like everyone is saying, we already knew this! harry potter= THE DRUG. lol

Posted by Ginny Feb 23rd 2008

us!?... addicted!?... naaahh! o.O... we are only compulsive readers who spend all day connected to mugglenet, try to talk to snakes when we go to the zoo, swift our wands at everyone, name our pets with hp names, (and lets not get started on how we INSIST on people calling US hermione, luna, harry, etc), we wear clokes, our poor teachers have to stand us calling them by different names (except for Snape, he gets very mad!) and our grades went up thanks to hermione =D... but those are only some very common symptoms, nothing to worry about!=D...

Posted by naff_inc Feb 23rd 2008

im addicted thats for sure. i cant stop reading them. but i wouldnt say its the same as a drug addiction. i was thinking about buying the collectors wands. and im basicly counting the days till half bood prince comes out. yer running around the streeds shouting spells is abit over the top, but you know what ever makes you happy. its started me off reading. and now iv finished off all of the harry potter books(4 times) i want to read more. so yer addiction maybe. but atleast its keeping kids off other drugs

Posted by NathalieCastle Feb 23rd 2008

Hello MTV, no offences, but I think you should study about what the noun fan is before saying HP being "addictive" (although it is).

Posted by voldy_x3 Feb 23rd 2008

But i honestly think that addiction can be good, as he said in the last few paragraphs (I just read that article. quite an interesting read :) ) Harry Potter has an entire community, if you will. It has a whole fandom. feeling part of something, feeling part of this huge fandom, I think that it might actually be good for you. It allows you to be creative (fanfiction, fan art, wrock, etc..) and gives you a sense of...belonging if you will. The Harry Potter community is huge and, in my opinion, can be completely healthy as it substitutes a break from real life and allows you to have friends and meet new people who won't judge you on age, race, religion, whatever. All we care about is Harry Potter, and if you like it or not. =] wow long post? haha thanks for reading.

Posted by voldy_x3 Feb 23rd 2008

Incase you were wonder, haha, yes i am ADDICTED!and I LOVE IT!

Posted by REMiiSAHMAZiNGx4 Feb 23rd 2008

Well yeah Harry Potter is sooo addicting! Its all I use the computer for!

Posted by vici1126 Feb 23rd 2008

FWOOP! Now at least when my friends call me obsessed (a word which I find insulting), I can look at them and say "NO! I'm an ADDICT!" Lol! And when people make fun of me, I can get "upset" and tell them of my "terrible" addiction and that it's not nice to make fun of people with "problems"...LOL! This is great.....LOVE IT! I wonder if people will start a support group or something? That would be SOOO HILARIOUS!

Posted by narcibellhermina Feb 23rd 2008

My obsession goes WAY past 'addiction' I'm head-over-heals-going-meg a-crazy-with-only-fan-fic tion-and-crappy-movies-fo r-the-rest-of-my-life- obsessed. My life slowed down with no more Potter books... but I did start a facebook group with the object of pelting Jo with so much hate-mail that she should write another that she has to! Although we havnt started yet... but duh! Harry Potter is like caffiene! It's MEGA ADDICTIVE. What's not to like? A boy finds out he's a wizard and goes to a magic school, defeats a Dark Wizard what- 6 times? What makes them realise NOW it's addictive? Gosh!

Posted by artemisandapolla9328 Feb 23rd 2008

If that's addicting, then I'm just guessing that it's a lot better than being addicted to drugs. It's encouraging his child to expand her horizons, read more and learn more. And besides...I like being addicted. Through HP, I've made wonderful friends, and learned more than I could ever imagine from them, and JKR.

Posted by mrsfredw Feb 23rd 2008

hell yea im addicted to harry potter....and proud of it at least we dont kill ourselves with our addiction! :-D

Posted by gryffindor_2004 Feb 23rd 2008

I totally agree! I know that I am addicted!!!!

Posted by verona Feb 23rd 2008

hahaha. this made me laugh. Addicting? NO....WAY....

Posted by hplvr92 Feb 23rd 2008

Was the study really necessary? I agree with him about the addiction though. There are far worse things to be addicted to. My parents were teasing me the other day and I went into a huge rant about how I could be smoking and doing drugs like the rest of the people I go to school with, but instead I curl up with my book and look at all of the different literary devices Jo used! I'm a dork, but the books (and sites) have helped me through the rough times in my life. Reading through the comments, I have yet to see one negative thing that has resulted in being addicted to Harry Potter. So thanks for stating the obvious professor! :P

Posted by phantomfluteplayer Feb 23rd 2008

This article cracks me up! I can't believe that this was an undergraduate study. Actually, it would have been interesting to do, even though the results are obvious. I know that I am OCD about checking mugglenet when I get on the computer, I read fanfiction all the time (except for right now - gave it up for lent), I listen to the most awesome Harry Potter podcast ever (yay MC), and I talk about Harry Potter all the time, and make connections between my real life and Harry Potter. Oh yeah - I also say "accio ----" when I lose something. Addicted much?

Posted by xmugglecastismylifex Feb 23rd 2008

Psshhhh. Addiction? As. If. Hahaha, I didn't really need a survey to tell me that, but that's cool anyways! I wonder if in the future there's gonna be like "Potterheads Anonymous", for your Harry Potter withdrawal. Classiccc...

Posted by justmione Feb 23rd 2008

addicted me never. I just have mugglenet and jkr's website as two of my 3 home pages, the otherone being my mail service. BUT SIRUSLY IM not addicted!! i just wore my HP robes at work yesterday, but that's not obbsession, just extreme liking

Posted by malloriirollam Feb 23rd 2008

I'm reading all these comments and I realize how much I've gotten over Harry Potter. It's scaring me! I need to get "re-addicted". Time to break out the wand.... :o)

Posted by angelina_johnson92 Feb 23rd 2008

I don't think MTV needed to study if Harry Potter is addicting. Any faithful fan could tell you that it is. To some people, Harry Potter is more addicting than drugs, lol.

Posted by Kamion Feb 23rd 2008

DOOOHHH!!!! could have told you anytime anywhere. now hand me the research money or hand it to any random picked fan who could have made that statement.

Posted by LoonyLoopyLuna Feb 23rd 2008

Hehehe...just so you all know, my father has been reading these comments. He says thank you to you all:) Something that didn't really come across in the article is that my father is one of those fans in denial. The kind that you will find on the couch reading when no one else is around. A few times I even saw him minimizing leaky and mugglnet when I walked by. It's even funnier when he begins to quote podcasts and then denies that he listens.

Posted by hpaddict88 Feb 23rd 2008

lol...i think my name speaks for itself...=]]

Posted by KatieDancer Feb 23rd 2008

Posted by Kamion Feb 23rd 2008

Oh, I just added a new name to mental list of possible Next Generation Professors in case I need them for a fanfic and the old have retired: Professor Jeffrey Rudsky for DIVINITION, compaired to him Threlawney was clairvoyant.

Posted by LoonyLoopyLuna Feb 23rd 2008

LOL! That would be a great fanfic:) And KatieDancer, WooT! Allentown Potter fans unite! Btw, did you hear about the possible HP theme park day at Dorney?

Posted by rooon Feb 23rd 2008

You got that one right!!!!!!!!!!!! : )
