Study finds 'Potter' can be addicting
Study finds 'Potter' can be addicting As if anyone needed to tell us this, MTV published an article earlier today about research concluding that the Harry Potter series can in fact be addicting. The story notes:

In a just-finished study that's being submitted to the Journal of General Psychology, psych professor Dr. Jeffrey Rudski and two of his undergrad students at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, report that they found characteristics of addiction in at least 10 percent of the 4,000 Potter fans they polled online.

While the doctor discusses that the end of the series did have serious withdrawal symptons for some, likening it to going off a drug "cold turkey," he also said he chose to do the study on the end of the boy wizard's saga over the conclusion of the hit series The Sopranos because of his 15-year old daughter and the things she's taken from it:

"She's picked up guitar because she wants to be in a wizard-rock band," he said. "She's studying Latin because she wants to better understand J.K. Rowling's choices of names for her characters. She started reading Stephen King and John Irving because they spoke with Rowling at Radio City two summers ago." If that's being an addict, he's down with it.

LoonyLoopyLuna, your dad is reading these comments?! Let me say that I think that his research is really awsome and proves what every ( if not most) Harry Potter fan knows about themself! :) Have fun with the Latin! :o)

Posted by hpwiz812 Feb 23rd 2008

well....DUH!!! way to state the FREAKING obvious lol

Posted by gernumblie Feb 23rd 2008

This made my day! Hahaa! :D LoonyLoopyLuna, your dad is sooooo cool!!! :D Take care you all! HP addicts, hah. :D

Posted by rbersol Feb 23rd 2008

I really think that J.K. Rowling just wanted to tell her story. I am huge fan of Harry Potter and the messages that it sends out to people. It is rather disturbing to me that so many people who come to this website are so negative. Yes, there are a lot of negative things in this world, that is why you have to look at as much positive as possible. Anyone can do a study on anything. The only studies about rape, murder, etc. are just to tell us that it is either rising or falling, not how to fix it. Perhaps more people should read books and series like Harry Potter to become a little more happy.

Posted by Kraize Feb 23rd 2008

If all they wanted to know is if it was addicting, i could have gave them the answer AGES ago. derrrrr.

Posted by gernumblie Feb 23rd 2008

We are just as sane as everybody else, actually (paraphrasing Luna). :D

Posted by ccunni Feb 23rd 2008

No way! Harry Potter is addicting?? I had NO idea! *rolls eyes* Duh its addicting! Anyone could tell you that lol! If it wasn't addicting would I have gone and stood in line for hours to get a copy of Deathly Hallows before all my friends? Would anyone have? No worries about me going 'cold turkey' and having symptoms and junk, any time I start having waithdrawls, I just pick them up and read them again lol. Glad it offical though, now when my friends say Im addicted, I can say "I know! Even some scientist guy says I am!" :D

Posted by lunalovegoodsnumberonefan Feb 23rd 2008

Yes i am so addicted to Harry Potter. I have so much stuff of Harry Potter,i know all the lines from the books and the movies, i know about all the characters, creatures, plac es,spells, and everything about Harry Potter. I mean Harry Potter is just a huge obsession of mine, and i will be a devoted, addicted, massive Harry Potter fan forever. I mean nothing will ever top Harry Potter for me,and when the series was over like other people said i was going through Harry Potter withdrawal too. I still sometimes am suprised that it is over with, and there is no Harry Potter left. I agree with Emi_5,i would join HPAA also:p lol, since i am so addicted to Harry Potter also.

Posted by raguentnerjr Feb 23rd 2008

Well, I confess, I have been adicted to Harry Potter. The Monday before the release of DH, I started with OOTP and read it thru. (2 days). Then HBP (2days). Watched all four existing movies. Read DH cover to cover when it arrived. Next day I found myself looking things up in DH, Read it again. Then back to OOTP, HBP, and DH again. I was having trouble reconciling some references from DH to the first books, so I sat down and read all seven books, start to finish. From the read of OOTP to the fourth read of DH took 7 weeks. Now that's an addiction. Unfortunately, the OOTP movie has cured it. It's more like a teaser trailer, there is so much of the book missing.

Posted by i_LOVE_rupert_grint Feb 23rd 2008

i think i'm living proof that that's true...... and of course we're addicted!!!! we live and breathe harry potter, so we're DEFINITILY ADDICTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!

Posted by lilyevans412 Feb 23rd 2008

I am so addicted!!! I have always felt a withdrawal after finishing each book. It would be 2AM, and I would just lie there and hold the book close to me until it was morning. And I have never been so addicted as I was this past summer - omg I LOVE deathly hallows more than anything in the world......anyway, I thought it was cool that he mentioned what his daughter did, because I wasn't a big reader before HP, and when I was looking for something else to read inbetween Harry Potter books, Stephen King was the first one I turned to, because I had seen him read with J K Rowling (on aol video).

Posted by lunalovegoodsnumberonefan Feb 23rd 2008

Yes that is true for me too, i_Love_rupert_grint. I live, sleep, eat, and, breath e Harry Potter. I was the same way raguentnerjr. I read the first six Harry Potter books right before the Deathly Hallows came out, before i would have to go to work i would walk around a mall where i worked at,and just stand my whole time looking at the Deathly Hallows cover on display in Borders Express. I would look really awed at it,wondering what it meant, and just fascinated that the book cover of my favorite series Harry Potter was in the window. I also read all seven books after i was done reading the Deathly Hallows for the first time, looking for clues that would add up to what would happen in the seventh book. I have a question for you i_LOVE_rupert_grint. Since that is you're username, does that mean Ron is your favourite character,if not then who is? It's obvious who my favourite character is by my username.

lol this is pretty cool. I don't think I'm one of the 10% (seriously) because I had no "withdrawal", but I have friends online (none in real life, unfortunately) whom I think would be. Hello LoonyLoopyLuna's dad, pleased to meet you, haha I thought about applying to Muhlenberg (I'm a high school senior). The article is really interesting; I hope mugglenet can link the entire study when it gets published because I'd like to read it. ~Not-quite-addicted HP fan

I have been a Harry Potter fan since the series started in 1997. I was in England for vacation then, and i saw this book called Harry Potter And The Philospher's Stone. I bought it right away, went back to my hotel read it,loved it,and couldn't wait for more. I then kept buying a Harry Potter book all the times they came out,and devoured each one loving them so much. I mean it was like a three year torture to wait for the Order Of The Phoenix to come out,but i had such a wonderful time theorizing what could happen in the 5th book, and who or what the Order Of The Phoenix was. I then was waiting patiently for the 6th Harry Potter book, and when i found out the title i was so happy, and then when the release date came out i knew i had to get it right when it came out,and be at the midnight party. I put in my name for the pre-order at my local Barnes and Noble, went there on the night of July 14th.2005,waited all night til midnight, and was beyond words of how i felt having the Half-Blood Prince. I went home and read it right away, and i loved it so much, just like i loved all the rest of the Harry Potter books. I then found out when the 7th book was going to come out,pre-ordered my copy at my local Barnes and Nobles, went to the midnight party, and i first was number 200 and something to get the book. I then ran into someone who worked there, that i knew from going to Harry Potter discussions, and she told me she would bump me up to number 7 in line,i was so excited that i got moved up,and was number 7,and it was the 7th book. I was dressed as Harry at the party, and as i was leaving there was a camera guy filming. I had my Harry Potter book in my hand, screaming, and shouting i got the final Harry Potter book. I turned the tv on the next day to see if they had anything about it on the news, and there i was walking out of the store holding my copy of the Deathly Hallows. Now that was pretty awesome,i was so happy that was the best day of my life.

Hello everyone If you could meet one person from the Harry Potter world who would it be and why? I know it is very obvious for me, i would love to meet Luna Lovegood, cause she has alot of quirk, she believes in things other people would scoff at,and she is the outsider of everyone else at Hogwarts, and i just love her name.

Posted by Luna_sees_thestrals Feb 23rd 2008

Hi, my name is sara. i dont think iv ever eaten a fish. lol. i must be addicted to hp cuz i decided when i found out about dumby and laura called the bible outdated that i wasnt going to be a fan anymore, yet here i am. GO CHEESECAKE!

Posted by Hermownninny15 Feb 23rd 2008

i agree with Mattuk. we have much bigger things going on in the world and this guy sticks to the fact that harry potter is addicting. who gives a care if it's addicting or not? okay i can understand if someone goes and kills themselves because the books are over and they want to explain to the parents that they need to keep their kids from getting addicted to things that will end, but i don't see why their doing this now. it's retarded. people like it, so what.

Posted by LoonyLoopyLuna Feb 23rd 2008

My father just told me that there is a second part of the study coming comparing HP addiction to drugs and alcohol and all. Just picture that, Jo dealing "drugs". And also, he said that he may read some of these comments at his Terminus presentation:)

Posted by LoonyLoopyLuna Feb 23rd 2008

Hey folks...loonyloopyluna's father here.. Gee, some of you are tou....cheee. Just so you know, part of the motivation for all of this is to understand how all addictions are somewhat similar in how they become the focus of different peoples' lives. Yet some addicts are treated like criminals, while others (such as you if you are reading this) are looked at as a triviality. Sooooooo, this first study tried to establish what you all know, but to do so in a systematic way; scientists HATE anecdotal evidence. I would hope that you can now feel somewhat vindicated in what you knew all along. A follow up study (after this one gets published) will examine the stigma attached to different kinds of addictions; I'm willing to be that HP-addiction will score low, while drug addiction will score high. As for the Einstein who wanted the research money back, I DIDN'T GET PAID FOR THIS. And for those who think this is a waste of time....you're reading this, and commenting on it, aren't you? As a scientist who studies addiction, providing validated (as opposed to anecdotal) evidence of media-based addictions may help us understand addictions more generally. And as the article stated, most of you aren't 'suffering' from your addiction. Indeed, many of you are benefiting. See you at Terminus, Professor of Muggle Studies, Jeff Rudski

Posted by malloriirollam Feb 23rd 2008

I can see the headlines! 'popular author acused of writing addictive books!' Ha ha ha!

Posted by felixfelicis888 Feb 23rd 2008

you have to view this addiction as a new form of addiction... Generally, an addiction is viewed as something unhealthy. But obviously this type is very healthy so what the hey. that's pretty cool.

Posted by Emi_5 Feb 23rd 2008

hey LoonyLoopyLuna......your dad uses really big words....

Posted by rebel_hermionex7 Feb 23rd 2008

Well, that certainly explains a lot...

Posted by Chikicha Feb 23rd 2008

I found that article really funny. xDDD ...Of course I'm not addicted... *whistles innocently* *glances shiftly around*

Posted by The_Oddball Feb 23rd 2008

I love being a Harry Potter addict! But my mum isn't worried, she's glad, I mean in High School there are so many paths you can take. I know all the dialoge from all 5 films by heart, I read the books at least three times each, I wear my Hogwarts robe all the time I have a Ravenclaw and Gryffindor POA uniforms, still working on my Slytherin and Hufflepuff uniforms. (Go Ravenclaw!!) My Room has lots of HP stuff in it, I have a Alivan's wand (I mean, who doesn't!?) I mean, I just had to have the UK and US editions of DH, (In which I have.) I mean it's so addictive that once you have been a Harry Potter you never go back! YAY HARRY POTTER!!!!
