Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct
Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct UPDATE: As expected, this morning Warner Brothers issued a press released about the split. No new information is revealed.

Story highlights (Digg this story!):
- Part 1 to be released November 2010, Part 2 May 2011.
- JK Rowling was "cool" with the idea, according to Heyman.
- Warner Brothers to make official announcement tomorrow at ShoWest.

It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE. Quotage from the article:

Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.

"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."

Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

YES! My birthday is in November, and then I'll be graduating May 2011! What awesome gifts!

Posted by LillyBlack Mar 12th 2008

What the heck? This is a freaking rip-off! There was nothing in the seventh book, but this is the one they decided to split into two parts? Of all the stupid ideas I've heard, this is the absolute dumbest. I refuse to go see the seventh movie if they are going to do this. What a joke. All they want is more money. I don't care what they say.

Posted by heronxobsessed74 Mar 12th 2008

The "one story" thing is a wonderful point. And I've also been wondering about the DVD ... it's possible that even WB hasn't figured that out yet. Will they be released together ... ? I think they'll be released seperately AND together, later on. But gotta go!

Posted by Nekoknight Mar 12th 2008

Not cool. I was thinking along the lines of an intermission. And I absolutely hated the fifth film. I don't think Yates is for Potter.

Posted by HarrylovesGinny92 Mar 12th 2008

OH MY GOODNESS!!! I guess if J.K. is okay with it then it should be fine. But it is still a surprise. Oh on Danradcliffe.com Dan said he liked this idea. So I'm going to just go along with him! lol

Posted by fawkeshermione17 Mar 12th 2008

Well, it's been fun, my friends, but I'm off. Good night!

Posted by tjd8591 Mar 12th 2008

As said before, Harry Potter is not just seven separate stories, but one big story. Yes, they should have split up GoF and on, but DH was my favorite book so if they're going to do it for any movie that would be my choice too. Yates was, in my opinion, brilliant with OotP, and I'm glad that HP will have such a great director to finish the series.

Posted by uchia_potter91 Mar 12th 2008

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! I Can not wait another half year between the 2 movies. It's like being a Cubs fan, it's painfull. Anyway, oh well at least they have too add every part from the books now. that means no cut scenes!

Posted by hp_rox_my_sox15 Mar 12th 2008

soooo excitedd!!!!!!!! and people need to stop freaking out about what the movie should be like, it's not going to change how the movie turns out! it's not like you're not going to go see the movie just because they split it in two!!!

Posted by Nameless Mar 12th 2008

That's exciting, but I don't think I like the idea of them being separated by that much time. :/

Posted by love_padfoot Mar 12th 2008

oh sorry fawkeshermione i said i looooooove harry potter. and how dare you lillyblack, EVERYTHING WAS IN THE 7TH BOOK!!!!! what do you mean nothing was in there, if that book wasnt here today then we would still be guessing and trying to discover the meaning behind it all! besides that was the best j.k. rowling has and probably ever will(sorry jk) write! it was amazing in all its detailed glory of luna, the wands, the resurection stone, DUMBLEDORE, SNAPE SHOWING HIS TRUE FEELINGS, THE MYSTERY OF HARRY DISCOVERED, ron coming back, neville chopping off the snake's head, VLDEMORT DEFEATED BY LOVE, and of course THE EPILOUGE!!!! i mean honestly COME ON....................

Posted by Platform11 Mar 12th 2008

Yay! That's my senior year of high shool! It's going to be such a special year. :)

Posted by dark_nymph Mar 12th 2008

YES!!!! It's so good to finally hear it officially! They'll be able to fit in ALL of our favorite parts!!! I CAN'T WAIT for the Final Battle! PS: I really don't mind the extra cost; my local theater is really cheap- plus it's worth it^__^

Posted by Nameless Mar 12th 2008

Also, I'm not a Yates fan. Sorry. I just had a lot of issues with the first twenty minutes of the movie and the fight between Voldemort and Dumbledore (suddenly we were launched into an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender). Oh, and Platform11: That's my senior year, too! I'll be eighteen three months before the second half comes out.

Posted by nicolehp90210 Mar 12th 2008

finally giving the fans what they want!!! freaking amazing, plus it adds a year to the new in Potter!!!! can't wait!!

Posted by oomboo2 Mar 12th 2008

Yay!!!! Anything that will keep the fandom going longer is good news to me :)--------------------I wonder where they will split it at. I was thinking that it could be righ before the chapter entitled the Deathly Hallows, because it would be a good cliffhanger. Plus, it's a fairly even split of material at that point.

Posted by Quiscalus Mar 12th 2008

We're going to have to wait 6 months between the two parts??!?!?! Hmm, well, I guess that makes sense but it still sorta sucks. And I was hoping for a new director for DH. Oh wellz.

Posted by Accio_Patronum Mar 12th 2008

I don't mind the fact that it'll be split into two. At least that will do the story justice. However, I can't say that I'm a fan of Yates. I just don't like his style of filmmaking. There are so many things I didn't like about Order of the Phoenix that I can't even list them all. I can honestly say that I'm not excited for these next 3 movies at all now that I know they're all going to be done by Yates.

Posted by colorfulcrocs Mar 12th 2008

I am not happy. I AM NOT HAPPY. The first half of Deathly Hallows on its own just isn't movie material... there's no good place to split it. I have a feeling they will alter some plot aspects in the first half in an attempt to make it more climatic. Plus, I do NOT want to wait three and a half years before seeing the final scenes. Stupid greedy executives.

Posted by ginmo Mar 12th 2008

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSS!! Omg i'm soooo excited. You people who are against it are only against it because you don't want to have to wait for another movie lol. But see, they're almost released back to back anyway. I think it's a brilliant idea because that means they're actually going to stay true to the story line this time!! AHHHH! I'm just curious as to what they're going to name the second one... lol. "Harry Potter and the Death Hallows part 2" ....

Posted by tjd8591 Mar 12th 2008

I definietly agree, releasing them six months apart is just to make money, since I can bet you almost anything they'll film the whole thing at once. And I think almost definitely it will be split right after the scene at Bagshot's home.

Posted by magic_owl1 Mar 12th 2008

Darn, I won't be able to listen to the live show. >.

Posted by BatJeff Mar 12th 2008

OH COME ON!!! I like the idea of splitting the movie, BUT COME ON!!! Releasing the second part 6 MONTHS later?!?!?! What the hell??? Way to ruin the book there. Seriously. Is there a specific problem with showing both parts one after the other with an intermission??? Ah! This has me so pissed now!

Posted by felixfelicis888 Mar 12th 2008

WOW THAT'S SO COOL!!!!!!!!!

Posted by i_am_nagini_777 Mar 12th 2008

How do the Cubs relate to Harry Potter? Well, actually I kinda see your point. But seriously, I checked Mugglenet every five minutes. And then I left for like twenty minutes, and when I came back... boom!

Posted by hogwartshottie20 Mar 12th 2008

im not sure how i feel about this at the moment. haha but this is such big news that it made my local news on yahoo... when i typed in local news. and its not like i live in a big town or a town that actually deals with the movies. haha

Posted by tjd8591 Mar 12th 2008

Haha, I just thought since its nearly April, wouldn't that suck if Mugglenet was just pulling an April Fool's Joke?

Posted by Mrs_Erika_Radcliffe Mar 12th 2008

They had better get the movies flippin' right or they will be shot. The moment I heard the news I started crying. I'm so upset. The only thing that makes me feel any better is that David Yates is directing the films. He's a genious. I trust him. But they had better not butcher one of the best books in the world. This book is the last. It needs to be the best movie ever. If they miss a single part, I'm going to be furious. And Givrhellpeeves...don't write crap about no edititing. OF COURSE THERE'S GOING TO BE EDITING! HOW IN THE WORLD WOULD THEY END THE FIRST PART?! IT STOPS RANDOMLY AND SAYS 'TO BE CONTINUED'?! TAKING CRAP AWAY ISN'T THE PROBLEM NOW. IT'S MAKING CRAP UP TO END THE STUPID THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! They are going to have to make something up to end the 1st part so the ending of it is cool and the movie doesn't suck. This movie will have the worst ratings ever if it ends with "TO BE CONTINUED."

Posted by JonathanMalfoy Mar 12th 2008

YES! I LOVE IT!

Posted by Hermy_Luver Mar 12th 2008

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Posted by Kristi123 Mar 12th 2008

This is so awsome, its going to be split in two and david yates is directing!

Posted by Susan14 Mar 12th 2008

I thought it was Society for the Protection of Elfish Welfare. Guess I've been away from Harry Potter for too long. Two movies, eh? I'll be so old when they come out! But, I'm a Harry Potter fan, I'm used to waiting a long time and far off deadlines.

Posted by tjd8591 Mar 12th 2008

I think a good way to end Part 1 would be (depending on if they end it at the Bagshot scene) Voldemort flying through the air coming after Harry, or him in the house after Harry and Hermione escaped.

Posted by ashleyyosaurus Mar 12th 2008

Ugh. Are they honestly doing this? What are they going to call them, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2? For real?

Posted by MagdaleneRose Mar 12th 2008

hey! this is SO amazing!! and only six months apart? that's nothing! the first half will probably be in DVD version about that time... or else they will wait and put them together.. and what about the live mugglecast? the news DID come in the middle of the week as they thought it would... this will be AWESOME! *goes to think of theories to submit to said live podcast* YAYAYAYAYAYAY !!!!!!!!!!

Posted by love_padfoot Mar 12th 2008

i couldnt agree more tj, i couldnt agree more..............*smiles toward the sky, very movie like*

Posted by randomchat Mar 12th 2008

TWILIGHT PALES IN COMPARISON TO HP. SORRY, I HAD TO MENTION THIS.

Posted by Widdi2k7 Mar 12th 2008

Creative reasons my foot. DH can easily be edited into one 3 hour movie as the editorial I will be submitting shortly will show. The two movies will both be very short and very boring. This is nothing more than an attempt by WB to cash in on the series.

Posted by darkatheart33 Mar 12th 2008

They can fit so so so much more this way which is way better than cutting out a bunch of stuff, but it's gonna be torture waiting for the second part to come out after seeing the first!!!!!!!

Posted by kooldude10694 Mar 12th 2008

OH MY GOD! I kept saying that over and over when I logged on for the first time today!!! AAAHHH! I LOVE IT! But I probly woulda liked an intermission better. OMFG! lol. I can't believe it. AND NO CHRIS COLUMBUS! I AM SO ANGRY! HE BETTER MAKE IT GOOD AND HE BETTER HAVE JOHN WILLIAMS DO THE SCORE!!! OMG!! lol. I'm so excited!

Posted by margaret0048 Mar 12th 2008

I do not know weather this news is good, or bad...I knew it was coming, but I didn't really realize the impact it would have...I CANT WAIT 6 MONTHS BETWEEN! I DONT THINK I WILL BE ABLE TO HANDLE IT, BUT I AM VERY EXCITED! (NOTICE THE ALL CAPS) I JUST AM TOO EXCITED TO SPEAK! wow...wow...wow...wow...

Posted by Kate_Loves_Harry_Potter Mar 12th 2008

im excited and i cannot wait :D

Posted by margaret0048 Mar 12th 2008

hey tj, I think that that ending would be brilliant, but I think that it would be way too exciting for people to take it, and they would be just dying to know what happens next...I personally think that it should be split when ron leaves... but on second thought, I really am not sure...

Posted by fadnin2beautlite Mar 12th 2008

I'm very upset by this, not only do we have to wait two years after the half-blood prince release but we have to wait 6 months in between the release of the two movies for the last installment.I'm okay with david yates directing it but I wanted Mike Newell to direct the last film.I thought Goblet of Fire was amazing.I'm happy they're splitting it so they can put as much info in as possible but that doesn't mean they won't chop out things.I can definitely see them taking out the part with Charity Burbage, maybe dobby again because they've managed to cut him out of 4 and 5(but he also has a pretty big part in the last book) and a bunch of other things that aren't important but Bathilda Bagshot has to stay in but then again they did cut Ludo Bagman and Winky completely out of goblet of fire which I was pissed off about. But this only my opinion....Can't wait for more news!

Posted by rooon Mar 12th 2008

Yaaaaaay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! : )

Posted by fadnin2beautlite Mar 12th 2008

I agree with both your ideas tj and margaret0048.I think if they ended the first part with Bagshot that would make it really suspenseful but I think both your ideas would make it awesome.Who knows what they'll come up with.

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY YYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! .............. .........THIS IS THE BEST NEWS EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!! EPIC-LIKE.......WOOT WOOT! *SQUEES*!

Posted by RabidSphinx Mar 12th 2008

I kinda think that quote about cutting stuff is BS. MOST of the 7th book could be cut and it would simply be an IMPROVEMENT, but cutting stuff from the other movies was annoying, irritating, and didn

Posted by CFplayer19 Mar 12th 2008

YATES! darn!..i really didnt like what he did w/ the 5th movie, but im not some movie expert.....i guess it should be interesting 2 c! the worst will be the six month wait, and having 2 buy 2 movie tickets!!!

Posted by RabidSphinx Mar 12th 2008

my comment got cut off...grrr............... ........here it is again.................... .......I kinda think that quote about cutting stuff is BS. MOST of the 7th book could be cut and it would be an IMPROVEMENT, but cutting stuff from the other movies was annoying, irritating, and didnt do THOSE books justice! We have to wait until the last and WORST book comes out to film to finally be accurate? What the hell is up with that? I was hoping with this round I would actually LIKE the movie because it ISNT like the book, because book 7 sucked so bad. All I can say is if they TRY to add in the epilog I am sending arsenic in the post to Yates.
