Deathly Hallows split confirmed; David Yates to direct
UPDATE: As expected, this morning Warner Brothers issued a press released about the split. No new information is revealed.Story highlights (Digg this story!):

It's official! The LA Times has confirmed that Deathly Hallows will be split into two films AND will be directed by OOTP and HBP director David Yates. Read the full article HERE. Quotage from the article:
Producer David Heyman said the decision was made with some anxiety and only after considerable deliberations. The producer joked that "while my wife and Warner Brothers were pleased" to hear that the Potter movie magic will continue into the next decade, he himself fretted that the cynical observers would see the decision as a purely mercenary move.
"I swear to you it was born out of purely creative reasons," Heyman said during an interview in a converted airplane factory outside London that has been home base to all of the "Potter" productions. "Unlike every other book, you cannot remove elements of this book. You can remove scenes of Ron playing quidditch from the fifth book, and you can remove Hermione and S.P.E.W. [Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare] and those subplots . . . but with the seventh, that can't be done."
Heyman said he approached Rowling with some trepidation about the strategy but found that she signed off on its logic rather quickly. "I went to Jo and she was cool with it," Heyman said, "and that was quite a relief."

It's great that because they'll be two parts, practically everything will be included...but am I the only one that thinks that six months is WAYYY to far apart? That's gonna be torture. :[
YAY! I'm super happy! That post made my day! Just think 5 HOURS OF HPDH! They better include everything now! The only drawback it has is the horrible realease dates, well maybe just the November one, the May one is okay 'cause i'll be out of school (since i'll be in college). BUT YAY!

I'd just like to say this makes me mad because there is a time difference between the movie releases, not because they are trying to "milk it for what its worth" (which I think is a lame excuse). Are they going to leave part 1 in the theaters until part 2 comes out? What are they going to title these movies? Are they going to do it like Kill Bill (Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Vol 2)? GRRRRRRRRRRRR

i'm sorry but you guys are being such babies! complaining about 6 months that the movies are going to be apart. You're gonna get 2 MOVIES!.. There are thousands of fans out there who just recently got DH translated to their language (ie. the spanish one was just released a few weeks ago). If you wanted 2 movies you should be thankful. So you have to pay to only see half of a movie? darn. I know making it into two movies will most likely make the movie better, but this sucks that they can't show all at once.
Though I do like the idea of the longer movie(s), I don't think much of the fact that we have to wait 6 months to see the 2nd half....and what will this do to the DVD sales? Will they sell them in 2 parts or will the package them?
OMG! I just realized that I was 10 when Philosipher's Stone came out in theater and I'll be 20 when Deathly Hallows Part II comes out! Thats 10 YEARS of Potter film! WOW!
I have to say I think thats pretty stupid. I mean what if JK Rowling said "Well one book will just be too long, I'll just split the 7th book into two parts" I mean howwill they restart the 2nd part, and end the first. They will have to rewrite it drastically because every movie has to have rising action, falling action, denoument, exposition, etc. And splitting one story into two parts wont allow for that! I think this is a MAJOR case of money hunryeness, and I am suprised that most mugglenetters are blinded to that fact, If I wasn't such an avid potter fan, I would boycott the 7th movies all together. AND what will it be called, they can;t rightfully call part one or two deathly hallows. UGH this really upsets me
AND ANOTHER THING, the actors were contracted into the 7th film, now that there will be 8 what if one of the trio doesn't come back for 7 part 2!!!!!
I don't think that splitting the book into two movies necessarily means it'll be better quality. There's one thing for sure though: one extra movie = more money for WB.
I don't care how many reasons there are to be upset about this - I'm happy. Two movies means... well, twice the time and twice the fun (trying not to sound corny, but it's not working)!! This means that people won't be able to complain about things being left out. So what if you have to pay to see two? I usually see the movie about 3 times in theatres anyway, this time, I'll just pick my favourite and see it twice!

I've just had the crappiest day and come home and hear this. Heck no. SEVEN BOOKS, SEVEN MOVIES! BLOODY HELL!! At least Yates in directing... but come on. Thanks a heck of a bunch. Whatever.
I honestly am going to hate it with the halves being released 6 months apart, that is going to suck. I understand they don't want to cut anything out, and I'm all for that, but, if they are being filmed at the same time, why can't they be released as such, or at least a week apart? But, alot of us were pissed off at OOTP, so this should be nothing new.

Im happy the split is happening. Really, its the only way it could have been done without making a 4 hour movie. But Yates?? He's terrible. I was really hoping for Cuaron to return. Oh well, I guess you can't have everything you want.

Yes!! This news is great. I can't see a downside to it. I don't mind the six month wait, and I'm really excited that more of DH will be included. This will do the book more justice! I also have no probs w/ Yates directing, I'm just glad that Alfonso isn't. Wow... it was my end of senior year in high school when the 7th book was released. -& it will be the end of the hp films when I graduate from my last year of college. -sounds fitting. -& I also can't wait for the live mugglecast! Awesome!!
I say there should be just an intermission like for 45 minutes just in case, to at least go to the bathroom. But still that means they won't cut out things hopefully.
Well I'm glad that they made a decision on the final movie. I don't mind the two part DH. And I'm glad that Jo gave her blessings on the project. It should be a great movie with all the best parts of the book included, including The Prince's Tale. I wonder if the camping scenes will be included? It will be fascinating to see what transpires. And I am happy with David Yates... I was hoping for Spielburg, but at least it's someone who is familiar with the Potter films. I even thought that Chris Columbus, who did the first two Potter films, could d the 7th film. Just a thought there. Anyway, I'm happy, but yes, there will be a wait between HBP and DH. And 6 monthes, they probbably need the seperation for post production between parts 1 and 2. And I do suppose the dvd set will be priced out of this world!

Yeah-So I'm on some other HP site and I see this post on the board that says "YES YES YES YES!!! YATES FOR DH!!!" and I do this perfect spit-take; spraying my water all over the carpet. I scream and go directly to this site figuring that I could find the story here and WHADA" KNOW!!! Yates is directing DH. *crumples into huddled self-hug and cries* Know All I have to say is: NO NO NO NO!!!! I hate Yates! OOTP was awful! How could JKR even consider letting him slaughter a third book of hers? He should never, never have been alowed to direct the 6th one just because of the horrid job he did on the 5th one. Yes, I believe in second chances but this is the kind of thing you have ONE SHOT AT AND YATES MESSED UP!!!!!!!

I think this is a great idea. I am not foolish enough to believe it is only for creative reasons though, from WB's perspective this will bring in more money but lets face it,we are going to pay it anyway because we are huge fans (we must be, to be on mugglenet 7 months after the final book ame out.) We cant complain because after November 2010 we are all going to be happy that HP hasnt ended yet. We will have another 6 months of HP. As for David Yates, i think he done a great job, it was the first film i could take it for what it was (a HP film, not a HP book). He included everything that was needed (although i would have loved the weasley is our king storyline). In the film he took us through different emotions, Sadness (sirius) hapiness/laughter (the twins)and hatred (umbridge). I loved this film as it is the first time i have been to the cinema and seen a reaction from the viewers including laughter, booing and even crying (yes, most of us Brits are boring in the cinema, spending most of our time shhing people) We still have 4 major HP moments to happen in the next 4 years, HBP Nov 2008, the theme park 2009/2010, DH1 2010 and DH2 2011. So i say Bring them on, just not to quickly. :-)

I'm very neutral about the split. My opinion won't change anything, so I'll just have to wait and see it. The only thing that annoys me is the two year gap between HBP and DH. Oh, well, I'm more anticipated for HBP.
i haven't read all of the comments so sorry if this has been said already. But no matter what WB says regarding the money to be gained, im sure it was still part of their decision. theyre gonna make soo much money outta milking this. Heres how its gonna go: Nov 2010 theyll release part 1, then soon after theyll release a dvd/bluray of part 1, make money off that. Come May 2011 they release the second part @ cinemas, and then a DH2 dvd, most likely followed by yet another release with both movies in one. But please, David Yates, do this movie justice. Still, id prefer a long movie all in one, with an intermission in between. That would work. Its gotta be epic.

I am so happy about this exciting news. I just hope the whole shebang of people putting this movie together get right. Director, writers, producers, cutters, etc. If they get it right this time, I'll take back some of the things I thought and said after the OotP disaster! I still don't like the thought of it being released so far apart. Gotta have the DVD for the first part before the second part comes to the theaters. (hint, hint, WB)

Okay, I am STILL not to sure on the movie split. I'd be much happier if they could make one four hour long movie with an intermission. As for the production costs being doubled and income being halved, it's the last film and they're gonna still make a profit (maybe not as much as they would have liked) but they've made Galleons and galleons already for the series as a whole...
I guess money talks. If GoF and OOTP could be done in one movie, why not this ? Besides, where do you split ?
I'm not really sure what I think about this... When I first heard the rumors, I was hoping they were't true, but when I read it's official, I was happy. In one way, I think it's silly to split ONE book in TWO, it means that story won't be told in the same way. But on the other hand, it's something completely new and different and that makes me excited! :p All in all, I think 2010 can't come soon enough! (Not november 21 either.. :p)
