Amazon offers chance to read Beedle the Bard
Amazon offers chance to read Beedle the Bard Back in December, Amazon purchased JK Rowling's Tales of Beedle the Bard for $3.98 million in a charity auction. The online retailer promised they would work on some plans, and today they've announced a new contest that will let you fly to London and read the tales yourself!

Posted by TheQuiet1 Apr 9th 2008

"100 words or less" Are you kidding me? That's it? Man, that makes it even harder to answer; there's barely room to explain anything. Oh, well. Question: I feel like a dork asking, but why is it called the 'Ballad Writing Contest' if it wants us to right an essay? Maybe I just read something wrong. ^_^

Posted by lilpotterfan Apr 9th 2008

this makes me all giddy inside! : ))) except... im not creative at. all!

Posted by lilpotterfan Apr 9th 2008

Posted by ennaxor Apr 9th 2008

Awesome! A contest I can finally enter... I know what I'll be working on during my 10+ hour plane flight in a couple days!

Posted by Gryffindorfan221 Apr 9th 2008

This is just a waste of my time! People could be reading the Harry Potter books again instead of taking part of this stupid contest!

Posted by phantomfluteplayer Apr 9th 2008

It isn't a waste of time if youre the winner It would be very much worth it if you could read Tales of Beedle the Bard. And I am entering the contest. I know it's not likely that I will have even a fraction of a chance of winning, but I will at least have a chance if I enter. It's better than nothing.

Posted by rob1007 Apr 9th 2008

oh man! its for only over 13!! thats DUMB they arent TRUE fans!!!!!

Posted by EverettChronos Apr 9th 2008

I wrote a really fun short essay about a wizarding birthday song. I've got an extended version of abut 150 to 200 words saved on my computer now. I had to cut a bunch of details to get it down. I can't believe they're choosing based half on writing style. You can't get an idea of someone's writing style in less than a hundred words. And I'll try to be helpful here: THIS IS NOT A TRIVIA QUIZ! This is for showing off your creativity. If for option one, make up a song and write about it. I think the only songs in the books are the Hogwarts anthem, Odo the Hero, three or four Sorting Hat songs, and the clue egg's song. There are more, but none for birthdays. I'm just glad it's open to adults as well. In separate divisions. And is anybody taking options two or three?

Posted by Katharineee Apr 9th 2008

EverettChronos... What did you write about, like, did you write a song, or about a song you made up, or abour birthdays in the book? I think the questions are, well, not hard but just too vague.

Posted by lauradovi Apr 9th 2008

no Portugal... :( it's not that far from the UK and there are tons of low-cost flights from here; it wouldn't cost more to Amazon than most of those other countries... we never get to do anything Potter-related here. '-,- (official stuff, I mean.)

Posted by gregorama Apr 9th 2008

Lol Gregorama what do you mean you're bringing Doritos? I'm guessing folks in about every part of the world have these very popular & salty tortilla chips covered with orange nacho cheese flavored powder. Anyhoo... if you've ever had them... well, you get Cheeto Fingers. (not desirable while reading a four million dollar piece of literature) And if you don't have Cheetos in your country, then no wonder the American Economy is slumping.

nooooooooooooooooo way dude

Posted by rooon Apr 9th 2008

?

Posted by honeydukes0209 Apr 9th 2008

Even by a long stretch, if I miraculously won, I would never let my parents agree to let me go...=(

Posted by honeydukes0209 Apr 9th 2008

whoops! Obviously I meant: I would never be ABLE to let my parents to agree...:p

Posted by hermyweasley105150 Apr 9th 2008

I entered and I think I did ok I know I would never win but if I did my parents said they would let me go I hope I win. Cause Harr yPotter means more to me than anyone can ever know.

Posted by lilyevans412 Apr 9th 2008

That's awesome. I want to enter but I'm out of ideas. I could do the 3rd one but it wouldn't be creative and would be way too long. maybe I'll try the 2nd... I probably won't win, but best of luck to everyone!

Posted by Lydia_13 Apr 9th 2008

This really makes me angry. I HATE JKR for doing this. its really biotchy of her. "lets make a book EVERYONE wants to read..tell them about it, and NOT give it to them" i am so mad.

Posted by adriennecray Apr 9th 2008

I wish I'd win! Of course I doubt my writing could outshine all those smart people in the fandom, but whattheheck it is reaaally worth a shot so I'll try.

Posted by lauradovi Apr 9th 2008

As much as I love JKR, I do have to agree with Lydia_13 in a sense... Of all the souvenirs JKR could give to the people who helped her the most while writing Potter, why would she pick one that so clearly dismisses all the millions of fans, who have been loyal to her and to her her work for so long? I feel betrayed. I know I wasn't there like those six "special" people, but I would have been if I had the chance. I don't care for handwritten stuff and jewels much; I just want to read the book. I'm sure it's an amazing piece of writing and I can't understand why she won't publish it.

Posted by EverettChronos Apr 9th 2008

I wrote about a song I thought wizards would sing at birthdays. The lyrics include a spell that does something cool and birthday related. But I also think Wizards would be fine singing "Happy Birthday," because Warner Music Group owns the rights to the song, and Warner Bros. owns the film rights to Rowlingian magic. The questions are vague to let your creativity out.
