Video: JKR's public statement yesterday
"It gives me no pleasure to take legal action, but I am here today because I feel very strongly about an important issue that affects everyone and not just me. If books that plagiarize other works are permitted, authors, fans and readers stand to lose. There are lots of books in many languages that comment on or criticize Harry Potter and that’s fine. But the book in this case is different. It provides no analysis and virtually no commentary. It takes far too much and it offers precious little in return. I would just like to add that I am extremely grateful for the incredible support of Harry Potter fans everywhere."
Some photos of Jo outside court can be seen here.

GO JO!!!!
awesome, jo
Go Jo!! We are on your side all the way! :)
LONG LIVE JO ROWLING!
nice!
I heard some radio show last night reporting about this and they were SOOOO one-sided against Jo. Funny enough, two of the three people on the show had not even read the books and had never visited the online Lexicon! Also, they kept talking about how she's so greedy, and didn't even include the part that she's giving all the money from the Scottish book TO CHARITY! Some people make me sick!!! Go Team Jo!!!
I know the feeling arithmanceer. they are so prejudiced about rich people and HP that they dont check the facts. LONG LIVE JO ROWLING!
Yay! Hardly any people have commented yet, so I'm seventh to post!
It really isn't fair. So many people are trying to leach off her work. There are so many unautherised books out there.
She a legend! She's so strong too, she has to deal with so much crap from people. :(
I still think some of her comments are over the top, but people shouldn't be getting rich off of her ideas. If she loses, then it will be legal for fanfic writers to publish their work and make money off of it. At least they would be showing minute amounts of creativity by making up a storyline.
I'm sorry, but I disagree completely with Jo on this. It's curious that she denigrates the lexicon book now, but she had no problem using it as a helpful reference when writing the books. Why was it a helpful reference - because it took events and provided some analysis. Warner Brothers stole the time line that was carefully constructed by the lexicon authors. I hope that Jo loses this case. If the lexicon book is illegal then so are all of the Cliff Notes books. Perhaps Jo doesn't like the analysis that was done by the lexicon's authors since it pointed out errors and inconsistencies in the stories? My prediction is that Jo will lose, but the lexicon might have to add additional disclaimers to their book indicating that it is unapproved by JKR. On the plus side, the court case will build interest in the lexicon's book and drive up sales. If the lexicon book was a continuation of the story, it might constitute theft, but as a reference book for a subject like the Harry Potter books, I think it is perfectly fine.
We support Jo! So sad it had to come to this, cause Steve really isn't a bad guy (even thogh RDR is taking the heat, it's still his book).. He should know better than this! Even if he feels he has the right, he should always respect Jo's whishes! She, after all, wrote it..
GO JKR!!!!!!!!!!!! hope she wins!!!!!
Go Jo!!! I feel so bad for her, she's so nervous and uncomfortable
I fully support Jo in this; the Lexicon was fine as a free internet resource; it used its input drawn in from multiple sources and provided a service for fans. And now the creator wants to capitolize on it? It's sleazy to the core, and a true fan would respect the request of the author and not publish.
Dogbert, I agree with partially. As long as they weren't trying to get rich off their website, I believe JK was alright with it. When she said they were "lazy" and "incorrect" I don't think she was referring to the information in it. However, the issue of whether or not it analyzes it is interesting. I know this has been brought up before, but what about Mugglenet's book? Granted, it was made to PREDICT what would happen. Perhaps the main reason this has hit JK so hard is they did exactly what she was planning on doing. Perhaps she isn't as concerned about the encyclopedia itself (which is still a big issue), rather she is angry that she was in the process of making one and then this was going to be published (so maybe rather than being the primany issue, it's like throwing salt on the wound)....
This is getting out of hand, this really needs to end! Forget the case, why doesn't Vander Ark just give up? I feel so bad for her, on the bright side, she looks beautiful in that outfit! lol. There's always something good to say about Jo!
@Dagbert: sorry, I disagree completely. Adding to what others have written, the court case is hurting the book sales. B&N, Borders, and others all pulled their orders for the book. Vander Ark's server host disconnected the Lexicon website from their service (he scraped for another and his hits are way down). No one supports unethical and illegal business practices.
I hope you mop the floor with RDR and Vander Ark. Even if he still considers himself a potter fan and wishes to disassociate himself with RDR. It's a little late for that now! Good Luck Jo!
@ dogbert- I don't agree with you either. Just because the lexicon book is illegal doesn't mean that cliff notes are too. CliffNotes are like overviews. What Vander ark is trying to publish is exactly Jo's is doing, It's stealing ideas. He didn't argue in court when they suggested that his version was "identical" and "very similar" to what Jo has written.
@Dogbert ... again, sorry. Still thinking you missed a couple key points and recommend you research the facts. The proposed book is 91% cut-and-pasted words from the HP books. The remaining 9% contains very little analysis, much of which is incorrect. (Yup...I looked at the facts on-line, as well as the book.) Cliff/Spark Notes are very different. They are over 50% analysis and commentary, with little regurgitation of text from the source book. Other "commentary" books on HP provide added insights and literary background, not an alphabetized laundry list of text directly lifted from the HP books. Mnet's pre-DH book, for example, comprised predictions. Finally, read what Jo said in her testimony about using the Lexicon website, and why she gave it a Fan-Site Award. You're wrong about that too. She checked it twice, to see if it really had anything interesting about it, and then gave it the award for Effort, not Excellence. The RDR president admitted on the witness stand that he lied when telling prospective book sellers and distributors that she endorsed and relied on the site. As for the infamous timeline WB "took" from Vander Ark...my 8-yr daughter made one for herself without any help from Vander Ark as part of a 3rd-grade book report. What really did he do other than copy dates, which Jo originally developed, and which anyone can do by looking at the books? To me, the proposed book was a greedy grab for post-DH holiday dollars. If Vander Ark wanted to make money of his Lexicon work, why didn't he start charging for the site? Because the content could not be legally "sold". He knew this, but now tries to sell it as a book. Finally, the ultimate greed was his grab for the glory and money without any thought or mention of how he was going to compensate all the fan contributors over the past years. As you said, the Lexicon website was written by "authorS", not Vander Ark alone.
you can tell she's upset by the tone of her voice. :(
poor ark....It must feel horrible to know that your hated by the majority of the hp fanbase
OMG its so sad because when shes upset, I'm upset. She's my and so many others hero and she doesn't deserve the shhh that RDR is giving her.
