Scholastic Reveals Sorcerer's Stone Anniversary Edition Digg the cover | Share on Facebook

This September marks the 10th anniversary of when Sorcerer's Stone was first released in the United States, and Scholastic is ready to celebrate! This morning they announced the Special Anniversary Edition which features a beautiful new cover illustrated by Mary GrandPre and "exclusive bonus material from J.K. Rowling."

There is a great quote from GrandPre in the press release as well:
“It's a real treat for me to get another chance to visually bring Harry back to his fans in not only a new scene, but in a new light. Going back to draw the first cover for the anniversary edition was an opportunity for me to show another side of Harry... a vulnerable side. Having come to know and love Harry the way we all have, after experiencing the whole series, I think we can appreciate him even more on an emotional level.”

The book will be released on September 23rd and will cost $30. Read the full press release at the link below!

UPDATE: Check out the back cover art right here on Scholastic's site. It depicts Hagrid making his way up to Hogwarts Castle via boat.

Press Release:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Special Anniversary Edition to be Released on

September 23, 2008 by Scholastic

Book Features Special Material by J.K. Rowling

And New Art by Mary Grandpré

New York, NY (May 20, 2008) -- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, the first book in J.K. Rowling’s phenomenally best-selling series, will be released in a special anniversary edition on September 23, 2008. The book, published by Scholastic, will feature exclusive bonus material from J.K. Rowling as well as new cover art and a four-color frontispiece by Mary Grandpré.

The special anniversary cover of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Scholastic/Arthur A. Levine; $30.00) depicts 11-year-old Harry looking into the Mirror of Erised, which Harry comes across in his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and learns that the mirror shows you what you most desire.

“It's a real treat for me to get another chance to visually bring Harry back to his fans in not only a new scene, but in a new light,” said American illustrator of the Harry Potter books, Mary Grandpré. “Going back to draw the first cover for the anniversary edition was an opportunity for me to show another side of Harry... a vulnerable side. Having come to know and love Harry the way we all have, after experiencing the whole series, I think we can appreciate him even more on an emotional level.”

Published in the United States in September 1998, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was praised by The New York Times as “… as funny, moving and impressive as the story behind the writing. [J.K. Rowling] had wizardry inside, and has soared beyond her modest muggle surroundings to achieve something quite special.” There are currently 28 million copies of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in print in the U.S. alone, and 375million copies of the seven books in the Harry Potter series have sold worldwide in 65 languages.

There is a scar, but is hard to see. (Check the Scholastic page)

Posted by hotpinkFLEUR May 20th 2008

*carefully sets aside $30*

Posted by DeathlyH May 20th 2008

Yes....the scar is there. I already am saving a B&N gift card for this! :D Moaning Myrtle: YES IT IS!

Posted by liveyourdreamz May 20th 2008

wow...this Sorcerer's Stone is really cute.....I wish this was the American one. That one has random pictures on it from various points of the book--and this one seems to wrap it all together. :)

Posted by DeathlyH May 20th 2008

Liveyourdreams: This IS the American cover...well....the anniversary one anyway.

Posted by potterfanatic83 May 20th 2008

AAAAHH!! It's been 10 years already........(sigh) how time flies....i'm sad... Great cover though. I hope they make some new UK cover editions!

Posted by hedwig794 May 20th 2008

I like this cover alot! Harry looks so cute. I think $30 is too much for the book though, do you think there would be a release party for it?

Posted by hprebel311 May 20th 2008

AWESOME! I love the new cover. I wonder what the bonus material will be?! Great way to keep the fandom alive, by the way!!!!!

Posted by HPfanatic84 May 20th 2008

That is a great cover!! I think I will probably be buying that *sigh* Great job with the art, Mary GrandPre, as usual!

Posted by member_of_SPEW May 20th 2008

ah that is just beautiful. I want that cover as a poster for my dorm room next year. Maybe I'll have to skimp on textbooks to get this edition :)

Posted by gredandforgeluvr May 20th 2008

yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by hmrpotter May 20th 2008

Love it!! Will definitely be getting it!!

Posted by jumpmann1 May 20th 2008

what scene is it??????? I don't think it is the mirror of erised because harry didn't see himself in it, and the person he sees in the mirror has green eyes, not brown

Posted by little_claws May 20th 2008

what are you talking about? harry has green eyes and he is seeing his own reflection - therefore green eyes.

Posted by little_claws May 20th 2008

i think it is from our point of view and not harry's. so we wouldn't be seeing what harry is seeing.

Posted by theprophecy007 May 20th 2008

I really do not like the picture that they have chosen. It just not really appeling and you lose what the book is really about. Yes I also know that he is looking into the mirrir of Erised but it looks like he is looking in the mirror first thing in the morning. One more thing $30 on that . Hasn't scolastic made enough money yet?????????????????

Posted by nitrogen May 20th 2008

Dangg....that looks like a hecka nice cover...and yeah, my copy is damaged like crazy T_T

Posted by avadaKedavra_hannah May 20th 2008

The cover is really, really nice... I still remember when Harry saw his whole family in that Mirror... ;p

Posted by HpAlwaysN4ever May 20th 2008

How appropriate, now that it's off the bestseller list. Hopefully it will bounce back.

Posted by kooldude10694 May 20th 2008

OMFG!!! lol. I'm so excited! I love the covers!! SOmething to look forward to this year besides the movie!!!

Posted by love_padfoot May 20th 2008

oh my god yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you jesus, how coolio is that!!!!!!!?????????? agh sooooooooo excited, totally getting!!! oh and the whimsic alley thing on sunday was amazing, i was little dissapointed about there being a short line and hardly anyone there........ quite sad that there werent many ans there...... then again i did leave eventually and people could have come afterward, and also not everyone could go probably.... oh well, i wish all of you had gone, it would have been great!!! -

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever May 21st 2008

@theprophecy007: while its not in the morning ,its probably pretty close ;)

Posted by Rose37 May 21st 2008

It has been ten years already. Wow, but to tell you guys the true I didn't start reading the series until two years after, publication. Sorry!!!

Posted by EchelonGirl May 21st 2008

You can see (with not only the covers from GoF-DH but this one too) how much Mary GrandPre's style and talent has evolved. She's definitely one of my artistic influences. Although a few people I know are saying, "Yup, they'll keep milking the cash cow!", I really don't mind. I will be getting my copy on Sept. 23rd.

Posted by xakix May 21st 2008

hehe Sept 23 is my 18th birthday! I know what I'm getting XD

Posted by ClosetPotterFan May 21st 2008

If he is looking into the mirror of erised, then it would make sense that he doesn't see a scar, wouldn't he rather have not had it at that point?

Posted by 7Nat7 May 21st 2008

for me i dont care about the cover (although it is nice) i just want the new information!!!!!!!!!!! OMG im so excited! I wonder what it is!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Posted by Rose37 May 21st 2008

I would mostlikely want to pay for the $30, but that price does sound alittle too high for a book. Book one of the hp series allready came out and that is the more popular book than the book one special anniversary copy. I that is different is the cover of the back and the front and extra info. I am soooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooo, confused right now, it is not even funny!!!

Posted by jimieo May 21st 2008

I hope J.K. Rowling will go on another book tour and signing when this is released. I can't wait.

Posted by Abergoat May 21st 2008

For people complaining about the book being $30... Here in Canada, we'd probably pay double that. We get so ripped off with books. You have it good.

Posted by HPfanatic84 May 21st 2008

$30 isn't that bad. you have 3 months to save up! and if you're a borders reward member, there's probably a pretty awesome they will have a coupon for 20-25% off any purchase for that time period. and as someone already said, target, wal-mart and other such retailers will probably have it way marked down. anywho... I think what closetpotterfan said is a really nice idea! harry's deepest desires wouldn't include a scar on his forehead... :)

Posted by some2morrow63 May 21st 2008

awesome...anyone know if you can preorder it anywhere? I looked but didn't have much luck.

Posted by patheticallyobsessed May 22nd 2008

Uhm...I didn't notice a scar...and someone said that when you put the magnifying glass in the right place, you see it. Well, although I haven't tried that yet...(who's gonna bother clicking on the link again :P)...technically I think that no scar being there makes more sense...because isn't his most heartfelt desire, to be with his family again, only possible if there was no Voldemort-Incident on Hallow'een? And if that isn't there ... how can a scar be there? So ideally...in the Mirror of Erised...Harry should see his family and NOT see his scar. Otherwise...I love this cover and think that Mary Grandpre has surpassed herself.

Posted by Rose37 May 22nd 2008

I saw my friend yesterday, and when she had heard that the book cost $30 she flip out like crazy!!!

Posted by HPfanatic84 May 23rd 2008

You can pre-order at barnes & noble, i saw it online the other day. I bet if you went into any local bookstore you could get on a pre order list there. :) OH! and at B&N the preorder price is like $22.50.

Posted by Jonas May 24th 2008

Is it possible that the "ideal-mirror-Harry" doesn't HAVE a scar..? Just a thought, did they ever mention that in PS/SS? Because it seems to me that in Erised, where Harry's deepest desires are shown, his parents are there with him, and the Voldemort thing never happened, so he doesn't have a scar neither that people can stare at oh-so-annoyingly...

Posted by rooon May 25th 2008

: )! COOL!!!!!!!!!!!
