M. Night Shyamalan on directing a Potter film
Movie site ComingSoon.net has posted a new interview with the director of great thrillers such as The Sixth Sense, Signs, and more recently The Village. Now partnered with Warner Bros, Shyamalan was asked if he's been approached to direct one of the last two Potter films:
"You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time," he told us. "The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That's a tricky move.

"I haven't met with J.K. [Rowling]," he continued. "The first one was offered to me, but that conflicted with 'Unbreakable,' which was unfortunate. I would definitely, but I think probably before that I would adapt a book. I've gotten close a few times to adapting books."
Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

It would be cool, but he's too self-stylized for Potter

Posted by irishseeker Jul 8th 2006

ewwww no I like his movies but no I don't want him directing a HP movie no no no no no he'd change too much like making snape the headmaster and voldy the dada teacher stuff like that 1st

Posted by harrypotteretard Jul 8th 2006

i loved all those movies but i don't think he'd be good for HP. The movie's he's done are pretty different from HP.

Posted by RedRidingHood Jul 8th 2006

It's funny. A friend of mine just got into HP recently, and the other night after watching the films, he mentioned how he thought Shymalan would be perfect to direct an HP film. I disregarded that and told him it was a nice thought but Shymalan would never do it. He only seems to want to do stuff he's written himself. So this bit of news surprised me, since I have just so recently been thinking about it. I think he would do a great job, and now that he's "partnered" with WB as the article says, it's come to light that the concept is not so foreign as I first imagined. Only time will tell but I am still highly doubtful it will ever happen. I think they should ask Alfonso Cuaron back first.

Posted by pocnib Jul 8th 2006

uh, how about NO. He has a tendancy to turn a potentially good story into a horrible dissapointment. Personally I think it would have been smart to hire one director for all seven movies like almost EVERY OTHER SUCCESSFUL SERIES HAS DONE. Sometimes originality isn't that good of an idea

Posted by StrawberryKiwi Jul 8th 2006

I don't think I've ever seen a movie directed by him. I just hope that whoever directs the next 2 movies makes them turn out really great, especially the 7th since that wraps everything up. :)

Posted by harrybagginsfrodopotter Jul 8th 2006

Great movies...not right for our Harry Potter. Top ten!!!

Posted by mischiefmanaged128 Jul 8th 2006

his movies are really good (I loved Unbreakable) but I dont think hed do a good job with Harry Potter. The movies would be even darker, and i think he'd take the humor out of it. I think Chris Columbus should've directed the whole series, but then who knows what would've happened to Rent? I would like to see Spielberg direct one of the movies, but I think it's a little too late in the game to switch. Oh, and for anyone going to the August 2nd book reading and podcast: 23 DAYS!!!!

Posted by hpjunkie Jul 8th 2006

top ten? This guy sounds cool!

Posted by Awesome_Sauce Jul 8th 2006

I like M. Night Shyamalan, he could do well with our Harry. So long as we don't have Mike Newell again i'll be fine.

Posted by evilbutsexy Jul 8th 2006

Ohhhh man. I LOVE HIM! I would support that decision...he is very very creative. Love him.

Posted by silverlala Jul 8th 2006

I could care less who directs because it's not my choice...every director has a clear head with every film they do...as long as Mel Gibson or Night himself are not walking around as teachers he and I are square :)

Posted by freepalestine_abm Jul 8th 2006

cool...hope he makes this movie gr8...

Posted by fuchsia Jul 8th 2006

M. Night Shyamalan directing Harry Potter? why not? besides, i'll definitely bet for Steven Spielberg, provided that he will maintain the Britishness in HP, like what Chris Columbus has done. only, Shyamalan's specialty is the really horrible in a horror movie that makes it real (like the Mel Gibson collaborations). the only drawback? if he adapts HP the next movies may be a (tad) scarier than Mike Newell's, and the child-friendliness may be out of sight. but M. Night Shyamalan for Harry Potter? why not?

Posted by Eratosthenese Jul 8th 2006

I would cry if he directed it. THe only good movie he's made was the Sixth Sense. There was a preview for Lady in the Water at the midnight showing of Harry Potter 4 and as soon as his name showed up, I kid you not, the entire theatre groaned. He can't do it. He just can't.

Posted by nerdylatina Jul 8th 2006

Night taking over one of the HP films would be really interesting. Like he says, if they give him the movie they need to give it ALL to him, he does not come off as a puppet (just look at his movies and their story lines). And I agree - he will bring out the darker side of the books the way Alfonso did but to a higher level. I don't know if it would be such a good idea... now that I think about it. :)

Posted by Kdub45 Jul 9th 2006

Before book 6 came out I would have never picked Night to direct. But his specialty is making things mysterious and suspenseful and then hitting you with a big twist at the end. If Kloves writes the script, so that Night can't make it his own, I don't think there could be a better director to capture the shock-value of the scene atop the tower. p.s. Lady in the Water looks like it could be extremely scary

Posted by Impedimenta Jul 9th 2006

eh, he has good movies...i just don't think hes cut out for harry potter =[

Posted by Bonnie Jul 9th 2006

NO. NO. The Village made me want to cry because of how absolutely ridiculously ripped off it was from a Haddix book, Running Out of Time. And to add to it, how horribly it was put together. And since he puts himself in every single one of his movies, HECK. Maybe he could fill in as Flitwick while he's at it! I would lose all respect for WB.

Posted by Belsito Jul 9th 2006

I have not seen enough of this chap's work to be able to judge objectively but he sounds like a person who finds it difficult to follow someone else's story faithfully. I hope he realises that most of the those watching the movie will already know the story blow by blow, word by word. They have a depth of knowledge about the characters (except Snape's, perhaps) that he will never be able to achieve if he reads the books once through (or worse still, reads the relevant book only). We love these books the way JK have written them. I, for one, want to see JK's story on screen, not someone else's! Someone suggested bringing back Cuaron! Heaven forbid! The third film left me feeling so disappointed and empty inside, that on my out of the cinema, I had to struggle with myself to hold back the tears.

Posted by iluvharry Jul 9th 2006

Thank you, Bonnie! Plus he would probably turn HP into some sort of freaky-deaky horror movie, like the Sixth Sense. They should bring Chris Columbus back; at least he put as much of the books as possible into #'s 1 & 2 within a decent amount of time. By the way, am I the only person who has noticed that the longer the book, the shorter and further from the book the movie gets? But if he decides to, then he'd better not pull an Alfonso and fill the movie with all sorts of little stupid things while at the same time cutting all of the plot-critical stuff out of the script. Come to think of it, I agree with pocnib: they should have hired one director to direct all of them. And it should have been Chris Columbus.

Posted by Hermioneisgorgeous Jul 9th 2006

I Think that would be freakin awesome!!! if he did 7 Because 7 is probably the scariest and craziest and he as some sweet movies. i really think he could put a great "spin" on the movies. I did really care for the 4th movie anyway, but some people did so thats cool but that is way crazy that they offered him for movie one! it would have changed the whole thing, cuz it would have been WAY darker and yeah....

Posted by likelylad Jul 9th 2006

all hte criticism seems to be agaist his writing more than directing. he's not going to be writing the story, i'm sure it'd turn out fine if he directed one of them. and something like HBP, which didn't have many random hogwartsy fun details would leave a lot of room for directors to spread their creative wings without taking away anything from the plot.

Posted by TaylorHanna Jul 9th 2006

i read this story hours ago on comingsoon.

Posted by potterbookluver Jul 9th 2006

I personaly think he would be great for the fourth on or the fifth, he is good wit movies that challage ur brain and leaves clues on long the way,, ya know? If the seventh is really dark (which it prob will be) i say BRING HIM ON!! I really want to see what he would do....

Posted by Hermioneisgorgeous Jul 9th 2006

Whats up with People saying he would write it?? He wouldnt Write it, he directs it, so hes not going to make voldy the DADA teacher... And i think he would be the best for 6 or 7. He is good at making the scary dark movies so he could put a great spin on it

Posted by iheartmugglecast Jul 9th 2006

Wow, I'd love to direct a Potter film- an Australian female director. That would be FUN!!!

Posted by geauxtigers Jul 9th 2006

If M. Night Shama-lama ding-dong directs this, I will not go see it. The Village was bad enough, not to mention this is not his style. He is a horror film director, not a children's fantasy film director. He would mess it up making it predictable and far darker than it is. He would ruin it and as someone else that you don't know said, I would feed myself to a blast-ended skrewt if he directed it. Sorry to Shamalama, but this is not his cup of tea. rant over...

Posted by Markle Jul 9th 2006

It would be a disaster if MNS did a Harry Potter mvoie. The only good movie in all that he has done is The Sixth Sense. Let's hope to G-d he does not be involved with Harry Potter movies and in turn ruin it.

Posted by geauxtigers Jul 9th 2006

I also forgot to say that I agree with whoever said one person should have been chosen to direct all the movies. I like Chris Columbus because he stuck closer to the story, and he kept the humor. Shama-lama would make it so dark and creepy when thats not how the books are in the least. I could go on forever in reasons why I think he shouldn't be allowed to get within a 100 mile radius of any HP movie. He would ruin the whole story. Even if he didn't write it, hes still the top dog as director. He can do whatever he wants, like changing things in the scrip. That there is enough to flush the movie down Moaning Myrtle's toilet.

Posted by GryffindorGirl5 Jul 9th 2006

I'm a big fan of Shyamalan's movies. The Sixth Sense and The Village were two of my favorites and I look forward to seeing Lady in the Water soon. It would definitely make for an interesting movie and a lot more people might see it, being a fan of his. I'm not against it...

Posted by Bonnie Jul 9th 2006

HAHA. geauxtigers, I completely agree with almost everything. I wouldn't fully classify it as a children's fantasy though. He has a tendency of taking a fairly good plot, if developed, and butchering it to the point where the movie seems utterly stupid. He has the mind of thinking like an original, but that gets him absolutely nowhere. And I loved all of your HP references.

Posted by Scribblo Jul 9th 2006

No, no, no, No, NO! I like MNS's films, but they work mostly because of the gimmicks and twists, NOT particularly superb directing. I cannot see him doing a HP film justice. Now, do you know who I WOULD like to see direct one of the last two? Kenneth Branagh (the guy who plays Prof. Lockhart, for those of you who don't know). I think he would do an excellent job with the dark themes of the later books. Asking M. Night. Shyamalan to direct a Harry Potter film is practically akin to asking Quentin Tarantino to direct a Harry Poter film. Great director, but TOTALLY wrong for the job. Know what I'm saying?

Posted by geauxtigers Jul 9th 2006

Bonnie, You're right about the kids movie thing, I was just making a point. He's like oil and HP is like water, they just don't mix, bottom line. He is at least to me, a horror film guy, he should stick to that, even though the Village was the dumbest film ever, I was so dissappointed in the ending.... But still oil and water never mix, Shama-lama and HP should never mix....

Posted by gandalfxj9 Jul 9th 2006

I really hope he considers it!! M. Night Shyamalan is a great director!! I've seen all his movies and there just brilliant! Also since HBP and HP7 are the darkest of the books, he would be perfect for the movie...yay a horror director LOL!!!

Posted by morbidimpishfae Jul 9th 2006

From what I've seen of MNS other films, I don't think he's the WORST choice for a new director, but there are other people I'd rather see directing it. I think Tim Burton would be an intresting choice...I wonder if anyone else has considered him...

Posted by thehillsx48 Jul 9th 2006

not a good choice.

Posted by metsburg Jul 9th 2006

Shyamalan has his own tastes and I'm pretty sure he'd have turned HP into a kind of thriller. That'd have done no harm to the series though, since all the HP movies we've seen till date are very detached from the excitement of the books. I'd love to see Shyamalan direct HBP, since it's so sensitive a book with so little action and so much emotions and suspense. That's what suits Shyamalan the best. And, I don't believe he'd make great changes to the storyline.

Posted by elizzibeth Jul 9th 2006

NO.

pocnib: There has never been a film series like Harry Potter before. When you mention other film series, what are you referring to? Star Wars? That's six films made over a period of 28 years, and three directors worked on it. Lord of the Rings? One director, but they "only" made three films, and filmed them all at once. Don't forget, Harry Potter can NOT do this, because they need the main characters to age from fairly young children to their late teens; if they literally filmed seven movies all at once, they'd have to either use the same actors pretending to be many different ages, or cast different actors for the roles at different ages. As to other series... Matrix? Three films, two of them made at once. Same for Pirates and Back to the Future. But a director commiting ahead of time to direct 7 films in the same franchise over ten years? That's a rather insane commitment for any director, and I don't think any established director would agree to it. For a film director, it's simply too much of the same thing, too close together. The only person who would have agreed to that is a director without many credits who saw it as a big break, and even there, you would have risked them getting utterly burnt out by the back to back production of the films (usually one is in pre-production while the other is in post, so the director would need to be involved in aspects of two films at once; Columbus quikcly decided that was too much to handle). It's just not a realistic thing to expect to have ever happened.

Posted by Mistress_of_Magic Jul 9th 2006

No, no, no, no. Letting Shyamalan direct any HP movie would probably scare the crap out of the thousands of younger children that will obviously be watching this movie...Harry Potter was written for kids for the most part and Shyamalan would make it to scary or ruin it completely like many of the other movies he's directed. As Long as Shyamalan never touches the HP movies and they never EVER let Cuarón direct again I'll be happy, and I agree with many others, they should have had 1 director for all 7 films and it should have been Chris Columbus.

Posted by Potter101 Jul 9th 2006

I'm seeing alot of negative things about this director...I dont know... i think Id like him directing te potter film...Defiantly not the 7th one the 6th one ya...but i want Chris Colmbus to direct the final one...becuse hell stay true to the book. And thats what we need...Is a director to tell teh aduiance whats eally happening....Thats just my opinion though.

Posted by Lor1980 Jul 9th 2006

"...but I think probably before that I would adapt a book." As opposed to Harry Potter??? He does know that Harry Potter is, in fact, a book, or does he?

Posted by Salamandras Jul 9th 2006

Please, no.... no. Just no. >.

Posted by RowlingsFan Jul 9th 2006

Huh. I know that a director is a big part of the movie, but to be honest, I haven't paid very much attention to directors so far and I probably won't anytime soon. My guess as to whether Shyamalan would be a good directer or not for one of the Harry Potter movies as is good as anyone's! I say, if he gets the chance, good for him. I simply enjoy the movies. :-)

Posted by The_Maltese_Fan Jul 9th 2006

I agree that the books are getting darker but you cannot exaggerate with the 'dark stuff' either. I mean - look at Prisoner; Alfonso did a really bad job with it because he made it look so much darker than the previous two and removed or decreased lots of the important things. Someone who has not read the books would not understand anything that went on in Prisoner, especially in the Shrieking Shack scene - the actors were talking so hurriedly and all at once. Alfonso was not a good HP director and, assuming that Night would conitnue in Alfonso's direction since he is a horror film direction, he wouldn't be either.

Posted by Veg_muggle Jul 9th 2006

I love his moies but.........I have to agree with what seems lik a majority here.............its not his style...........it seems he does more real horror (not the bloody gorey crap that is mainstream horror today. yuck) and HP just horror, yes it has some horror in it but its not like really scary and its just not his style........I thikn its a bad idea

Posted by cool_varzz Jul 9th 2006

i hav no idea abt wat his style is cause i havent seen any of his movies but since majority here say tht he isnt da apt choice so i think they shld reconsider their decision

Posted by fantastyfreak Jul 9th 2006

I really like pretty much all of his movies except for The Village which the whole time I was saying in my head this is just like that novel Running out of time which I swear he ripped off of. Well anyways, like everyone else his style just would not fit the style of the Harry Potter books. I really think Tim Burton would be a great fit for the series. I am a huge fan of Tim Burton's works and with Danny Elfman's wonderful score, Harry Potter 6 would be amazing

Posted by Deppified Jul 9th 2006

NOOO ... That can't happen! I would like to have Steven Spielberg or Terry Guilliam to direct HBP and the 7'th movie. But not Mr ..-I-don't-remeber-his-name .. Tim Burton ? YEEAH! I have thought a lot of him .. That would be even better than Spielberg or Guilliam .. Wohoo :D
