M. Night Shyamalan on directing a Potter film
Movie site ComingSoon.net has posted a new interview with the director of great thrillers such as The Sixth Sense, Signs, and more recently The Village. Now partnered with Warner Bros, Shyamalan was asked if he's been approached to direct one of the last two Potter films:
"You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time," he told us. "The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That's a tricky move.

"I haven't met with J.K. [Rowling]," he continued. "The first one was offered to me, but that conflicted with 'Unbreakable,' which was unfortunate. I would definitely, but I think probably before that I would adapt a book. I've gotten close a few times to adapting books."
Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

I'm not sure about that. The Sixth Sense and Harry Potter dont mix. As for Signs, I didnt mind that movie, but once again, they dont mix. And The Village was stupid in my opinion. I mean, yes, I was scared because im easily scared, but it was a copy of a book called 'running out of time'. So I won't judge his ability to direct one of the next two HP films until I see it, but I wouldn't be quite as happy if I hear hes going to direct it.

Posted by uknowho Jul 9th 2006

that would be cool i suppose though i dont understand why they have to keep switching.

Posted by alexE333 Jul 9th 2006

Well i don't think he is the best choice but who knows? he could do some good stuff with HBP. then again Harry potter just isn't his style.

Posted by Helene Jul 9th 2006

Just so you're all aware: M. Night had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he said all of this: in short; he's just kidding. He's known for pulling off these kinds of hoaxes right before a new film is released, (his "Lady in the Water" is due out in a few weeks), and before "The Village" he said something else that turned out to be a falsehoold, including his entire, 'Making of' show for SciFi. A very elaborant stunt. So don't believe the hype: it's all promotion for the new film.

Posted by flibbertigibbit Jul 9th 2006

i'm kind of wondering why they arent asking people to direct more than one film. it would be nice for once not to have to complain about the mysterious expanding of the lake of the relocation of the castle.

Posted by Snapple Jul 9th 2006

Oh God please No! M Night Shamalayan is formulaic and prosaic. Oooooh, the little kid whispers, oooh that is supposed to make me so scared. Please, please for the love of Harry, the other movies have all been decent, please please please do not even consider this man for Harry. He's OK at what he does. He would RUIN Harry. Please please no. [Thank you.]. Ms. Snapple

Posted by LunaLovegoodRoxx23 Jul 9th 2006

PSH! THAT WOULD BE AWESOME!!!! his movies are so great... i really hope that he considers. and plus, the fifth and sixth books are deff. the most depresssing, darkest, creepiest out of the series so far. so i'm for it. he'd be great at directing them!

Posted by veelagirl Jul 9th 2006

As everybody's been saying- his movies are good, but it wouldn't work if he directed HP. I just kind of wish that Chris would come back. Kind of.

Posted by Elphie Jul 9th 2006

eh... i guess. it would be something different for him to do - but i think there are a lot of anti- Shyamalan people out there that would complain and put a negative damper on the film when it comes out. HP doesn't deserve that. But I suppose we'll just have to go with whatever tickles their fancy. Personally, I'd like to see Tim Burton have a go at an HP film. I think he'd make it interesting. Plus, Burton = Elfman for music and that would be awesome. But that's just me talking...

Posted by HarrietJPotter Jul 9th 2006

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooo

Posted by Greeneyes_2006 Jul 9th 2006

NO!!! I will REFUSE to see the movie! M. Night Shame-amelan is a THEIF!!! He STOLE the idea of The Village from someone else...He is NOT a good director and my opinion stands that I will refuse to see the movie, and I will NOT see any of his other 'movies'. Eeek....what is becoming of the world?! lol...

Posted by Amortentia___xo Jul 9th 2006

I dunno, I really wouldn't like him to direct it, just because (of course, this is obviously happening, but I still don't like it) he's a new face. Buuuut, anyone's going to be a new face now, so I suppose we'll have to deal with it. However, it's just not his style. I really wouldn't want anything major changed (like The Village was a weird version of Running Out Of Time, which was actually a good book). It's like "soooo, who wants to watch 'The Wizard', eh?" All in all, I wouldn't really want him as a director.

Posted by Tdish14 Jul 9th 2006

M. Night Shamalan? NO! I mean, he's not a bad choice, but I can't see him directing a Harry Potter movie.

Posted by ANonnyMouse Jul 9th 2006

um... does he know that harry potter is a book? or is he saying he wants to adapt another book to see how it works first?

Posted by upsest336 Jul 9th 2006

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ok the only movie that i've seen directed by Mr.Shyamalan was the 6th sense. i didnt like it to much. not scary enough v_v any way, i read a reveiw ( i forgot who wrote it ) and doesnt JKR have to approve to the changes that the directors make? GET CHRIS COLUMBUS BACK! he'd do the movie right ^_^ i would hope o_o hee hee.

Posted by Brooke1125 Jul 9th 2006

I think that it would be awesome if he directed one of the movies because he is one of my favorite directors. he can't be worse than alfonzo though that's all i have to say.

Posted by annfelton Jul 9th 2006

ok village was bad.........absolutely HORIBBLEEEEE!!! but im really happy dat night has been considered...(it arises only cuz hes also indian..hehe)........wish mira nair was still ready!!!!!

Posted by Lance_Hermione Jul 9th 2006

This is exactly what the Harry Potter movies need, I mean he would keep it accurate, he's not an idiot like "irishseeker" suggested. And yes, he does have a personal input, but that is because he directed "and" wrote all of his famous movies. And the Harry Potter movies I thought were terrible, he will bring me back to them. Hey, the movies turned my brother off of Harry, and M. Night will probably inspire him to finish reading all of the books.

Posted by Nameless Jul 9th 2006

I'm not sure if HP is is style.

Posted by upsest336 Jul 9th 2006

oy, for the love of droobles best blowing gum. the only thing im worried about the 6th movies is if they dont include all the good stuff. like not going in the cave and Dumbledore not drinking the potion.if they didnt include that i'd be ticked. i guess i wouldnt care who the heck directed it just as long as they include the good stuff. theres this one part in HBP that i read over and over and over, because i was so gald it happened. but i wont mention it, to save me any further embarresment ^_^. ( I cant spell v_v quite depressing )

Posted by Susan14 Jul 9th 2006

Didn't Shyamalan direct (or something) Lady in The Lake? I heard that was terrible.

Posted by kellydofc Jul 9th 2006

Oh God no! I have figured out everyone of his movies within the first 15 minutes and have been bored out of my skull for the rest of them. Not sure that I really want to see HBP ruined in the first 15 minutes by a long lingering shot on a Horucrux. I think that like the cast they should stick with Britsh directors. I think it would actually be great to see Ken Branagh direct one. After all he did a great job with Henry V and is already part of the franchise.

Posted by evilbutsexy Jul 9th 2006

Yeah he did direct Lady in the Water. I hated the Village, though, I have to admit that I did NOT see that ending coming.

Posted by upsest336 Jul 9th 2006

ok im ticked. how in the hell can the HP movies turn somebody off from harry? sure the movies arent as great as the books but SO WHAT?! if the movies pulled your brother away from HP Lance_Hermione 9 what about Narnia eh? the movie wasnt great but i LOVED the books. ( not as much as hp though now dont get me wrong ) any way, and what about Lemony Snicket? I've read the books and seen the movie. the movie was the worst thing i've ever seen. how many has your brother read in the series? 1,2, 3 tops? you just cant give up on something. damn it. he's missing a whole lot of adventure by not reading HP. its like saying two groups of kids where assigned to read books for class. one side had star wars and the other had lord of the rings. now in both groups these two children dont like the books cuz the movies stunk. they're missing a whole lot of good stuff by not reading but oh well they'll never know. seeing as they're hard headed as hell. just like i was when i first heard about HP. i told my mom that it was scary and full of witchcraft. i finally saw the movie and LOVED it. being hard-headed looses you a great deal. and if you dont like HP then why are you even on the website? ~signed~ ticked off. yall probably think i went over the edge. well thats just to bad cuz i think i did too.

Posted by katie19 Jul 9th 2006

Hmmm I have seen a few of his movies, but I really don't think that Harry Potter is his style. I think that it would be kind of be good if Chris Columbus came back. I am not sure though. I talked to some people that watched the Potter movies, but had never read the books, and the seemed to think that the first and second movies were the least confusing. They liked that they kind of had a little bit of everything in it (a.k.a. the trio's adventures, and the actual classes, because the 3-4th movies hardly had any of the classes in them) I agree. They stuck to the books, and only took out the stuff that you really did't HAVE to have. In the third and fourth movies I noticed that certain things were missing that I was really looking forward to. So, for the sake of the Potter movies, I hope that in the sixth and seventh movies they get a director that can capture the whole book. (Possibly Chris Columbus)

Posted by upsest336 Jul 9th 2006

i meant Lance_Hermione. I spelled it wrong v_v.

Posted by xowakeupsandyxo Jul 9th 2006

okay this is ridculious because he is the type that directs weird stuff not good films. This M.Night Shabadabadingdong doesnt know what the hell he is doing with a master peice like this. He last two Films sucked and where just totally weird so i hope he doesnt do it.

Posted by Sariza Jul 9th 2006

I love him! He is an awesome director. The Sixth Sense and Signs are two of my favorite movies. I think he could make a really cool Harry Potter movie, although it would probably be scarier than any of the others!

Posted by Matrinka Jul 9th 2006

I still think that the idea director, for the sixth movie, is JOSS WHEDON. I adore his stuff. He has adolescent angst down to a "t." I would love to see his direction for all the emergent hormones with the horror backdrop. He did wonders with those things for Buffy & Angel.

Posted by Sariza Jul 9th 2006

@broadwayybabe: Really? It's like "Running Out of Time"? I love that book! I've never seen the Village but I love that book. That's interesting...

Posted by wheretheresawil Jul 9th 2006

WHAT A TWEEST! :O

Posted by Sariza Jul 9th 2006

Why is everyone getting so upset about this? Nothing is set yet. We don't even know if he's going to do it and everyone is freaking out. I say we wait it out and see what happens before anyone starts crying. Why worry when nothing is cast in stone?

Posted by Hogwartzgrl479 Jul 9th 2006

Well, I honestly don't care who directs it. I just want it to come out!!! and one of the comments said that at the midnite premiere for the 4th movie when Lady in the water came out and his named showed up everyone groaned. at my theatre everyone cheered. I just thought that was interesting! Yay for Harry potter 5((movie))--- 1 year and and 3 days away!!

Posted by mamaluvshp Jul 9th 2006

While I think Mr. Shyamalan is a very talented director, I don't think he is right for these movies. He has his own very distinct style, and the Harry movies have their own flavour. I think they need to stick with British directors because no one else can duplicate the Britishness required to keep the story accurate. Mr. Cuaron is an example. He changed so many things in Azkaban that I thought were material that it affects my enjoyment of the film. Chris Columbus has strayed the least from the books. The fact that Shyamalan says that it would have to be turned over entirely to him worries me excessively. He will change the whole thing to make it his own, and really these stories belong to JKR, and the spirit in which they were written should be allowed to come through, not altered to fit another's vision. I do not think I would watch either movie if he directed one of the final two.

Posted by gympiggy004 Jul 9th 2006

M. Night Shyamalan....great with the village, signs (iffy) and the sixth sense (ohmawgash), but with HP, NO.

Posted by Up_A_Mountain Jul 9th 2006

I don't understand what the problem is with M. Night Shyamalan. He is a good director and spends a lot of time doing what he does. I think he would be perfect for either HBP or HP7. Someone mentioned Tim Burton for a better choice and all I have to say to that is "NO!" Tim Burton would want Johnny Depp somewhere in it and would totally ruin the film just he did with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Posted by Kit_weasley Jul 9th 2006

"Ron get out of bed we have to fight Voldemort." "Harry" "What?" [lifts covers to eyes] "I see dead wizards" "They're ghosts Ron, we all see them." Yeah I dunno about M. Night Shyamalan, it could be intersting, he could bring out more interesting aspects of the series, but I still want Terry Gilliam.

Posted by ronlives99 Jul 9th 2006

umm how bout no? we all saw how the village turned out it was stupid...thats all i have to say...i wish we had chris columbus back

Posted by gympiggy004 Jul 9th 2006

this has nothing to do with anything, but i sent an e-mail with a song parody in it to the correct person, but it hasn't been put up yet. if any of you have posted song parodies, how long did it take for them to put it up?

Posted by xoxomal Jul 9th 2006

Ewww... If you're gonna be that way you should just get Tim Burton. He'd be just as bad. I would DIE if they got him to do it. Ew. No. No. No. Noooooo. xoxomal

Posted by evilbutsexy Jul 9th 2006

So I was thinking about this. M. Night might be ok because consider this: he's not WRITING the story. He usually does pretty good camera work and effects and things like that. He's very very creative, so he might be able to put Harry into a better light than he's been seen in the past. Maybe he'll even get Michael Gambon to act more like Dumbledore instead of a maniac. I think M. Night might be ok. A good idea would be for them to have him take one scene and do it all the way through, then see how it comes out. I wish they would do those kinds of tests. They might do them, don't know though.

Posted by mysduende Jul 9th 2006

Um, an emphatic NO THANKS.

Posted by dracomalfoy Jul 9th 2006

NO NO NO NO NO!!!! Absolutely not! I'd rather Danielle Radcliffe or J.K. herself direct them!

Posted by lupislune Jul 9th 2006

It would be an interesting twist, if were to have Shamalayn direct the sixth or seventh movie. I could really see him do the seventh as it will probably have many intersting resolutions that I think Shamalayn would be good at.

Posted by loonz Jul 9th 2006

now he's rly good...he has a gift as a director. but i cant imagine him doing hp... cuz hp has SOME humour and its not ALL scary and darkness

Posted by GryffindorPixi Jul 9th 2006

I think its a brilliant idea that he directs one of the last two films. He works very well with dark themes. And people, Harry isn't going to some magic school where pixi's and unicorns roam, with rainbows in the skies. Harry is going through a dark period in his life, and I think someone who has directed nothing BUT darker themed movies, is perfect for the role of director in one of the last two Potter films.

Posted by loonz Jul 9th 2006

its SHYAMALAN u weirdos and yea i agree with the many people who are saying he would change a lot because he always has his own thing going on in movies. what most harry potter fans want is for the movies to be as close to the book as possible...but i think shyamalan wud stray a bit 2 much

Posted by ba_ba_ba_ba_baloney Jul 9th 2006

That would be sooo cool!!! But....yes, I agree it would be wrong..... TIM BURTON???? since when did we get to him?? but still, he's a good director, I've memorized like, every single word in Corpse Bride. I love that movie

Posted by Ctgate12 Jul 9th 2006

NO, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no!!!!!!! PLEASE NO!

Posted by bookishballerina Jul 9th 2006

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....no no no no no no no no no no no no. He would be so wrong for it. NO.
