M. Night Shyamalan on directing a Potter film
Movie site ComingSoon.net has posted a new interview with the director of great thrillers such as The Sixth Sense, Signs, and more recently The Village. Now partnered with Warner Bros, Shyamalan was asked if he's been approached to direct one of the last two Potter films:
"You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time," he told us. "The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That's a tricky move. Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!
"I haven't met with J.K. [Rowling]," he continued. "The first one was offered to me, but that conflicted with 'Unbreakable,' which was unfortunate. I would definitely, but I think probably before that I would adapt a book. I've gotten close a few times to adapting books."

please Dear God no. His movies blow. The Village sucked. Lady in the water looks rancid. DO NOT LET HIM RUIN THIS FRANCHISE.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! like his movies, especially 6th sense but NO!!!!! he'd ruin it, i think anyway. I just, he has a different style, way too thriller for the harry potter movies, they'd die (not literally) if he'd directed them, seriously, they'd totally be diffferent,it can't happen!!!!!!! oh, now i'm really depressed. But who knows maybe he'll the best one too!!!!! i just seriously doubt that!!!!!!
Shyamalan's movies are very well directed in my opinion. I think if he would have done the Prisoner Of Azkaban it would have fit his style better because of the darkness in the movie. I think if he directed the Harry Potter movie he would be great at it, and it would be interesting to watch.
I really do like his movies, but his style is so different from Jo's style that I can't see him working out well. I loved Cuaron's and Newell's versions much more than Columbus' two, but Shymalan's style is really out there. The ONLY one I might concede is number 6, because it was more of a mystery like he usually does (cerebral rather than action). I really really really would hate to see Columbus back. He gave the series a good start, setting everything that was necessary up for the rest of the films, and he did the best he could within the strict guidelines. That said, those are my two least favorite movies of the series. I probably would have stopped watching the movies had he continued. Cuaron cut things, but he talked with Jo (remember the interview about the graveyard?), so nothing major or important was cut out. He also added in things that filled out the world and made it seem less candy-coated and flat and much more exciting and real. I would love to see him back.
mike newell, pretty please--i want him to go back and redo the whole series. i guess he'd have to recast the younger cast members, but still, we'd at least have some consistency of direction. NOT shamalyan
hmm, never heard of him, then again, I've dont any directors(except the Hp ones)...well if he does direct a hp movie, it better be good!
Shyamalan movies are okay....The only one I really like was Signs but he just doesnt fit the Harry Potter motife(i know thats spelt wrong lol) Tim Burton on the other hand would be great!
yeah im kinda glad he doesnt do hp stuff... i like wb sooooooooo much better!!!!!!
As long as Mike Newell doesn't do another one and Tim Burton isn't asked to do one I'll be happy. Newell ruined GoF, it was the one HP film I can say I didn't like at all. Cauron was the best director and M. Night could carry on that vein with the books getting darker and having a more psychological meaning to them.
I think he'd be a great director for the last 2 Potter films because they are so dark, and that's right up his alley. I admit he's not the best director, but he's getting a bit better [hopefully his "Lady in the Water" will turn out okay], and as long as he didn't do a cameo for himself in the movie then it would be okay. As for Tim Burton, I'd have to put my foot down. He's a wonderful director, but he tends to take things to a whole new, and disturbing level which I personally don't enjoy. He's completely ruined many films because of it. CatCF anyone?
I think that all of the Harry Potter movies were wonderful. Of course, the mpst commensensical reason in my opinion is the variety of directors who all allowed the movies to be spiced with their own touch. In other words, directors added their own feel to the already amazing world of Jo. And so, it is only fitting to hope that a person like Mr. Night Shyamalan to direct a future movie for all of his movies have been wonderfully mystifying as Harry Potter fans are used to in the story plot. Mr. Night has a lot of experience and hence he would probably implement it in a Harry Potter movie. Nonetheless, all directors have done an amazing job for all Harry Potter fans! We look forward to any director, and definitely Mr. Night. I also do hope a person like Peter Jackson can direct! It would be an excellent movie as well.
OH GOSH NO. Not him his movies blow.
I love those other movies he made. He would be auesom in directing a Harry potter!!!
I think it would be AWSOMENESS! He good w/ dark movies nad unless i'm mistaken book6 and very likely 7 will be very dark indeed. I always thought the movies weren't dark enough. I hope MNS directs 'em!
i wouldnt mind seeing him as the director. i sae the 6th sense and that wasnt bad.
I think Shyamalan would be brilliant at directing HBP. He's a amazing director anyway... I mean, I've loved all his movies. However, I think it's probably a good thing he didn't do Sorceror's Stone.
My Dad said that he would be awesome. I don't know many movies he has made, but Sixth Sense was pretty good. "
i think he has his own personal style... WAY too different from Harry Potter. I like him, but i don't think he would work for Harry Potter. now if they had someone like jerry bruckheimer, that would be awesome!
He directed the Sixth Sence? I love that movie! But i'm not sure about him directing Hp. He's kinda a horrow person, isn't he. Who knows what he might do, staying true to the book.
Im going to have to disagree here on that one and by the looks of it, so is everyone else. But no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. That would be horrible. I LOVE his movies but that would be horrible. Though I do amit he is a great director but Im just not sure if he would fit.
yes!!! the books are getting darker and so should the movies and for that he would be perfect...as long as he stays true to the books. as for his movies not be appropriate for little kids, well they shouldn't be watching it anyway. i really don't like to idea of anyone watching to movies who hasn't or is to little to read the books.
I would hate to have him direct a HP movie. His idea of Voldemort would problably be a retarded man who runs around a village every once in awhile and scares everyone. Im still bitter about the fact that I paid 5 dollars to go see that piece of crap called The Village. Thank god me and my friends decided to go to the cheap theatre that time.
i have never heard of him who is he??
WHERE IS MUGGLECAST?! And I don't think he'd be too bad, but he would need some help on the humourous bits. Because the next few books ARE much darker and I think the scarier the better.
umm....if he directs...it's gonna SUCK....The Village and all his other movies...SUCKED
No!! ..... Thats all I have to say.
NOOOOOOO! this is terrible! Shyamalan does NOT mix with harry potter in any way shape or form. he does lame 'thriller' movies with horrible endings... what does this have to do with the wonderful world of harry potter? now that i think about it... why do we have to keep changing directors like this? the movies have NO FLOW... it's just awkward. you can probably tell i'm not a fan of the movies. but i like them enough to save them from shyamalan's ways. don't let this happen =(
okay honestly people need to stop complaining whether he would direct it or not. i agree some of his movies have been horrible... i agree he has a darker vision for movies. but first off: WB will not let him change it into his own story. if he insisted on doing his own thing with the movie then they wouldnt have him be director. so stop using that as an argument saying that he wouldnt do a good job.. secondly: if you have read the 6th book then you should know that it is very dark. the Inferi for example coming out of the water towards harry i think is really frightening.. for some reason i picture the girl in the ring crawling in her sickening way... but the actual corpses not looking as horror-movie-ish as the girl. also the chilling mist because of the breeding dementors? news of murders and disappearances? what about spinners end? that scene is a very mysterious and dark scene.. the memories dumbledore shows harry are also dark... morfin? and then just the part with the dark mark at the end and then dumbledore being blasted off the battlements. yeah i would say the 6th book is more than a little dark. so stop complaining and saying he would make it too dark. honestly i would like to see a director brave enough to make the movie as dark as the book... but im sure things will be toned down for the 6th movie anyway. and lastly since the movie is based after the book it is harder for Night to screw it up. hes got the good story right in front of him. he just has to interpret it in a good way. and we all know there are some people who just hate the movies for some reason anyway... like how people strongly disliked Alfonso Cuarons interpretation. Night has a creative hand and some of his movies are very odd... Harry Potter needs someone who has creativity like his..
I don't think he's the best choice for an HP film. Just has very different movie techniques.
My reactions and thoughts while reading: "Um huh....coming soon....M. Night Shyamalan...harry potter?...not... no...great thrillers??...sixth sense maybe....THE VILLAGE??? ....what? what? ....WHAT? .....WHAT??!! ...................... WWWWWWWWWHHHHHHAAAAAAAAATTTTTT???..... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! What the heck is he planning to do to this book...murder it then have harry see it's ghost? or maybe change the griffindor robes to yellow and slytherin to red? and dumbledore has to go make patterns in cornfields to find the locket. no. no. no. no. no. HAS WARNER BROTHERS LOST THEIR MINDS??? AAAAAAHHHHH!
I think he’d be a good choice, whether people have liked his movies of the past or not, look at him just being a director, he is extremely good, I think he’d do a fine job directing a Harry Potter movie. He would be limited in what he would be able to chance so it’s just absurd who ever said he’d make Dumbledore DADA and Snape Headmaster.
I dont think it would be good if m.night ' ' directed it.. i dont know.. his movies just arent harry potter-esk.. i think a british director would be best suited
ew. No!! His movies have been going downhill for a while now. I will not let it continue with Harry Potter! Burton would be awesome.
NOOOOOO!!!! i don't think he should direct ANY of them..... i think they should stick to all British directors!! not him tho!
M Night Shyamalan: I'm very concerned about his *adoption* comment. The last thing we need is a director who will stray further from the original story and the nature of the characters. Chris Columbus: While he did a great job with the first two films, the series has grown up. I'm not sure a return to his style would work. Alfonso Cuaron: More talking shrunken heads at the expense of important and/or beloved scenes deleted from the movie? I think not! Mike Newell: I can never forgive him for allowing Dumbledore to manhandle Harry Potter. There is AMPLE evidence in the books to declare that Dumbledore would never have done anything of the sort. Steven Spielberg: I think it would end up too cute, frankly. Tim Burton: I love his stuff, but I don't think he's right for the Harry Potter series as it stands right now. I think he would have been a good choice for the early films. As for having Danny Elfman be a composer, I would love that! Has anyone else ever noticed that Williams' score owed a bit to Elfman? Kenneth Branaugh: EXCELLENT! INSPIRED! Terry Gilliam: Ooooh, he could do it. He could be funny and quirky and dark -- all at once, even! Bottom line: it needs to be someone who knows and loves the books. They will then know which scenes need to stay and which can go. They will know how each character should act and maybe even whip that obnoxious Gambon into shape.
No that's not a very good choice for a director.
i am absolutely obsessed w/hp. and whoever said on the page before this that tim burton should direct a future film, i would probably puke. because tim burton is a twist. and the village was probably one of the worst movies ive ever seen. :)
Time for me to be obnoxious: Joss! Joss! Joss! Joss Whedon would be EXCELLENT. He's a great director - who understands teenagers, evil, and directing! Joss Whedon is the perfect choice!
p.s., newell did an awesome job with gof... cuaron was the worst. columbus was the best though. but i cannot believe anyone would think newell did a poor job! ah, just a matter of opinion i suppose.
Why are people saying they should stick to British directors?! There has only been one British director and that was Newell who screwed up a great book. Chris Columbus is American and Alfonso Cuaron is Mexican!
if shamu-watever.. directed a Hp movie.. well.. i'd.. get realllllllllLLLLY upset... i mean.. i juss dont think he's harry potter material.. he's more of the scary movie blah.. i mean fantasy-wise yeah.. but he really likes to change things.. harry potter might even be turned into a serial killer.. he'd totally fanfic the whole MOVIE!!! i mean.. we could even see snape falling off the tower as dumbledore kills him.. i mean..? yeah.. i would really rather have tim burton.. i mean.. his movies are REALLY good.. i mean.. they all are really successful.. so.. BOO SHYAMALAN!
"What the heck is he planning to do to this book...murder it then have harry see it's ghost? or maybe change the griffindor robes to yellow and slytherin to red? and dumbledore has to go make patterns in cornfields to find the locket. no. no. no. no. no. HAS WARNER BROTHERS LOST THEIR MINDS??? AAAAAAHHHHH!" haha extremely possible! I DO HOPE THAT THIS IS ONLY A RUMOUR!! i cant stand shyamalan.. i mean... his documentary about all these movies ACTUALLY happening to him... i doubt it.. and all his movies STINK!!! and tim burton.. would be REALLY good.. i mean.. he kinda twists things.. but look how Charlie and the Chocolate Factory turned out.. weird twist yet very successful and very good movie
As long as it's not Alfonso Cuarón (Prisoner of Azkaban director), I am up for anything. My personal oppinion is that movie III was the worst one, I didn't enjoy it too much. I really liked the way Mike Newell did Goblet of Fire.
um, M. Night Shyamalan? hell NO. he would kill the series. absolutely destroy it. i mean, he'd KILL HBP, and no WAY would i want him for the final movie. heck no. after such a stupid and dissappointing movie as The Village, please, M. Night, stick with your own stuff!
Ugh. Please no. I have never seen a decent movie directed by this guy before, so I think I would cry if he was chosen to direct one of the final two movies. I believe that WB should have simply chosen one director to make all seven of the movies, that way we'd have a bit of consistancy throughout the series. I say no to M. Night Shyamalan.
I don't feel like posting on Mugglenet what I did on Leaky, because it's very long, but I doubt many are interested anyway. :o)
No Matter what all the harry Potter Fans are goingn to go see the movie because its like putting to life your imagination... you most fans are just interested to see if it was good... Even if it didnt look like the best movie, so if MNS directed to im sure it would be a fine movie, it might be alittle more scary but it would still have humor and all the stuff thats needed, they arent getting new charaters or anything, and hes not going to change anything more than all the other directors have, i know that Warner Brothers wouldnt let him mess it up so yeah ... I think it would be interesting if he did 6 or 7...
