M. Night Shyamalan on directing a Potter film
Movie site ComingSoon.net has posted a new interview with the director of great thrillers such as The Sixth Sense, Signs, and more recently The Village. Now partnered with Warner Bros, Shyamalan was asked if he's been approached to direct one of the last two Potter films:
"You know, that Harry Potter dance has gone on a long time," he told us. "The problem is that it is a living breathing thing now, all by itself. When it comes over to my camp, it needs to be kind of handed over, adoption papers and everything. That's a tricky move.

"I haven't met with J.K. [Rowling]," he continued. "The first one was offered to me, but that conflicted with 'Unbreakable,' which was unfortunate. I would definitely, but I think probably before that I would adapt a book. I've gotten close a few times to adapting books."
Thanks to everyone who e-mailed with the tip!

The only thing "funny" I ever saw in an MNS movie was him doing an obvious cameo. I would vote for Terry Gilliam definetly. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Posted by hpfanatic714 Jul 9th 2006

YEAH!!!!!!!!! That would be awesome if Shymalan directed HP!!!! He is such a good director! His films are so scary and I think he will do justice to Harry Potter! Plus he focuses more on the story of a movie than action, which is more exciting! I hope he does direct it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by VeryWeirdSister Jul 9th 2006

I actually think that his style would be perfect for the series. I've never seen Unbreakable, but from what I've seen of his other movies, his only "pure" horror movie was The Sixth Sense. Signs had a large theme on faith and human courage and The Village had a lot to do with love and innocence. Lady in the Water looks mostly like a fantasy to me. His films are dark and scary, yes, just like the Harry Potter books, but he always has a light side to his movies. I mean, the whole thing in HP is good vs evil and that love always prevails. I didn't like Cuaron's edits, but I liked his style. Newell did a good job, but he tried too hard to make the film "dark." Making it moderately shadowy with no lighter side is NOT Hp. It needs to be as crazy dark as Cuaron's but with the glimmer of hope we see in Colombus's, like JK wrote it. I think Shyamalan could do that with HBP because it's very mental. Tim Burton would have been perfect for OotP with it's strange dreaminess, but no other books. The only book-to-movie adaptation that didn't annoy me in some way was Holes. It only changed some very minor things and kept to the spirit of the book. The guy's name is Andrew Davis but I've never seen anything else of his. Oh well. Rant over.

Where is MuggleCast?? I'm thirsty for MuggleCast!

Posted by Gyffindor_Lioness Jul 9th 2006

I think that M. Night Shymalan, would do a great job with one of the last movies, maybe movie six, because he does so well with plot twists and "cliff-hangers" so-to-speak. It seems that a lot of you don't like his movies. I think that that is because of the script. Remember, he wouldnt be writinting the story, he would just be directing it. Also, he hasn't even been given the job yet. I dont know about keeping the same director throughout the movies, because, as the books go on, they get darker, making the movies so. Chris Columbus did a good job of capturing the innocence of the children in the first movie (2nd as well?) But, if he were to go one directing all 7 movies (which he hasnt), I dont know if he would be able to capture the maturing spirits of the characters and darker themes. He (Chris) might make it too fairy-tale-ish. I think it is a good idea to switch directors, because, they all have their own interpretations. All movies need a little variety, so as not to have the same flare and directing style.

Posted by fashion_critic Jul 9th 2006

that would be TOO AWESOME! i love him! i can't wait to see Lady in the Water.

Posted by YouKnowWhoIam Jul 9th 2006

Sounds like he'll do a fantastic job and if he does, I hope he can break the curse on the director postion. Can anyone say Daja Vou?

Posted by brittie Jul 9th 2006

I love all of the movies that he has made! He would be perfect for the 6th movie!

Posted by mariapuff Jul 9th 2006

Isnt that the guy that directed Lady in the Water? Ohh nooo!! Lady in the water looks so creepy, he better not turn Harry Potter into something like that!

Posted by Thephoenixlament12 Jul 9th 2006

I HATED Christopher Columbus. He was wayyy to corny with the directing of the movie. It was a very innocent movie with innocent children when the series is no longer like that. I would possibly not see the movie if Christopher Columbus directed one of the last two.

Posted by Scar_Head_Forever Jul 9th 2006

I dunno. I really love his movies, especially The Village, but he's a horror film director... I don't know what this would do to HP. But I think that if he changes, just for this movie, and doesn't make the focus the darker and scarier parts, he could do wonders for our Harry. All in all, however, I think that there are better directors out there, I just can't see him changing all that much. The movie would be much too dark if we let him direct {ha! if 'we let him' direct, like we have a say in the matter :P}.

Hmm... not the biggest fan of M. Night Shyamalan; I'd rather they pick someone else.

"I want someone whos actually read the books and who really appreciates them (like us Mugglenetters) to direct. other than that, I really don't care who directs." exactly.. except.. i dont want some stupid thriller or 1 star director.

Posted by KikiPotter Jul 9th 2006

He did The Village? BLAH!!!!! Uggg..Can't we just get Steven Spieberg instead? He would stick loyal to JKR's story and he is the best! (i love Jurassic park) I hated the Village.

Posted by MuggleMage Jul 9th 2006

ronwheeezley: well...yeah that too. but I don't know many directors so I won't go ballistic over who directs the next 2.

Posted by ksig Jul 9th 2006

No No No! We don't need Shymalan to direct ANY Harry Potter film. I really liked 6th Sense and Unbreakable, but I don't like the way he stated his desire to have everything "handed over", meaning that JKR would have no input at all. I could just see him taking HBP or book 7 and completely changing the mood, direction, etc. I am still reeling from the odd direction that Cuaron took POA. To me, that's the movie so far that is most lacking in important similarities to the novel. To have completely omitted the information about the Marauders' identities is inexcusable, and I fear that someone so stylized like Shymalan would ruin a Harry Potter film. Ditto for Tim Burton. He's very creative, but wrong for this series. And forget Danny Elfman! What's wrong with the music we've had up to this point? I know it needs to be changed slightly for new films, but I would fear that Elfman would completely move it in a different and unfamiliar direction. At this point in the franchise, it's important to honor (to a certain extent) the precedent of the first four movies.

WHERE IS MUGGLECAST

Posted by GuiDumbledore Jul 9th 2006

I think it would be greit if this man direct any of Harry Potter films. He's good, I've watched all his films and his thrillers are more interesting than several other similar movies... But I really dont believe that it is possible. He doesn't combine with Harry.

i think that it would be pretty cool to see him direct it i liked 6th sense and signs but i never saw the village, but i think it would be good as long as he sticks to the story unlike the 4th movie

I would never accept a Harry Potter film directed by Night. Never. I am not saying his movies are horrible, but he has his own, I don't know, vibes to his films. That "vibe" just wouldn't go with a Harry Potter film, it just would not. I hope that TPTB do not consider Night for any of the remaining Potter films, that would be a buzz kill.

Posted by Ilona Jul 9th 2006

MUGGLECAST!

Posted by dabulls Jul 9th 2006

oh ok thanks

Posted by geauxtigers Jul 9th 2006

I think it should have been much better planned out. When they decided to do the movies, they knew that there would 7 books, thus 7 movies. Step one would have been to hire a director for all the movies. Chris Columbus has done the best job. He was true to the books and only cut what was nescasary so that even if you hadn't read the books, the movie made sense. PoA, there was no explaination what so ever as to who Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs were. That was kinda a big deal (yes I'm being sarcastic) It was what the whole book revolved around. Then we got to Goblet, which was good, but not consistant with the book. I have a big problem with the 'arrogant Harry' and egg opening scene. Now with 3 different directors, you get a large inconsistancy in the series. It will soon to be 4 different and if they added Shamam-lama to the mix it would be terrible. I just have to say that he wouldn't even have been considered if one director was chosen for all 7... rant over

Posted by xoxlizzxox Jul 9th 2006

I like alot of his work. I think he'd be a good co-director for the 6th movie, because the 6th book is quite dark, but also quite humerous. So if we had him and a more light hearted director working together that would rule the world.

Posted by cosmic_qt21 Jul 9th 2006

NOOOOOOOO!!!!! I swear, if he directs it, I'll cry! His movies are all freaky scary ones & I don't want him doing that to Harry Potter!!! Plus, The Village sucked! If he made just one sucky movie, I am NOT trusting him with Harry Potter!!!!

Posted by xoxlizzxox Jul 9th 2006

I think Chris did the worst job of all 3 directors so far. I agree that they should have tried to find one director for all 7, but I think it should have been either Curon or the guy who did the 4th one. Why? Because for SS and CoS I like the movies only because they're Harry Potter, on their own merits they're not the good. For PoA and GoF I like them as movies. Even if I didn't read Harry Potter I'd still like thoise two on their own merits as movies.

Posted by xoxlizzxox Jul 9th 2006

Two more points: 1) Don't judge a director by a single Village movie. 2) To thoise of you who think he would make it too dark: Have you read the books? I books are actually quite terrifying when you think about it. The 6th one esspesially. While these books have their humor, the plot lines are quite dark, if you really visualize some of theise events you'll realize the books are very dark, and the movies need a director that can handle it.

Posted by Kareen Jul 9th 2006

That's very interesting. Personally I like the Shyamalan movies I've seen. They delve more into the human psyche than anything I've ever seen. And his new movie Lady in the Water looks excellent. Hmmm... he could make the HP movies extremely interesting if he were to direct one of them. Especially one of the last two. The fifth and sixth books have definitely gone more into Harry's thoughts than the others and I think Shyamalan would do the best job at expressing that.

Posted by Solana Jul 9th 2006

No way. Shyamalan makes his own movies and own stories. He wouldn't do another persons work. I least I don't think so. He probably wouldn't do it. And if he ever does, at least the mysteriousness and darkness would be there. But I doubt it.

Posted by summerlover Jul 9th 2006

if he directs an hp movie, i will boycott that film and any other film wb makes, the village was terrible, the beginning, middle were bad enough without the end, which just killed the entire film and made me and many other people in the theater pissed... personally, i cant think of any director that it good enough for hp movies, the mopvies are just to hard to make, each just needs so much that no one can capture, however i would love to see peter jackson do it, he doesnt care if its long, and even though i didnt read the lotr books, he seemed to include enough detail in it so that everyone could understand it and enjoy it and he did capture and portray a lot of emotions, that would be good, if it had to be one of the previous directors, i would choose chris columbus, he stayed true to the book more than others, but alfonso captured and portrayed emotions well, ill be happy with either one but no mike newell, even though he did make the films more british, each director had a good trait to their movies, now all we need is a director with every one of those traits.

Posted by RK1313 Jul 10th 2006

seriously shut up: "if he directs the movie im boycotting". no your not. you know you would go see it just like the rest of us. seriously people need to stop being dramatic about it. yes night has had some horrible movies. hes also had some great movies and he has an imagination. no WB would not allow him to make Dumbledore the DADA teacher and introduce other ludicrous ideas to the film that you guys have been suggesting he would do. either WB will make him follow the book or he wont be director. so stop saying he will. as far as the 6th books concerned, its the darkest one yet...so why would you be complaining that his style is too dark. and i would just like to say that i think we can honestly all admit that none of us really actually can call the harry potter movies our favorites. the switching of directors has made it like a song thats offtune. the kids acting kinda sucks. they cut out large portions that would still be in the movies if the rites were under new line or something other than WB. i think its safe to say that none of the movies are great and that mostly we couldnt give a **** if the movies turned out horrible as long as the books continued to be fantastic. so stop screaming over something useless. whoever the director may be the movie will turn out just the same as the others: decent, all right, okay. and dont get me wrong im not totally against them they are entertaining.. but yeah i think you get my point.

Posted by Shirius Jul 10th 2006

i would loooooooooooove him to direct it,he would be so great for it. He will do an excellent job.ithink he is the best director in hollywood after spielberg, anyone who doubts that should watch the 6th sense and he is indian.GO Indiaaaaaaaa.Go shyamalan.

Posted by Alora_Phoenix Jul 10th 2006

That is seriously whacked. M. Night Shamalyan CANNOT direct a HP movie, are they insane? That is nopt his style whatsoever, we have to stay with Mike Newell. he's the best so far....what will happen if the movies get screwed up???

Posted by ConCon Jul 10th 2006

Um...... i've only seen the sixth sense, but my parents saw the village, and those kinds of movies are so different compaired to hp. I say COLUMBUS RULES!!!!

Posted by scurvy_cur Jul 10th 2006

No! Tim Burton and Terry Guilliam! i would love it if those two directed the last 2 movies!

Posted by Mandy4Ron4ever Jul 10th 2006

His movies get crappier and crappier, no way in h*** would I want him to direct a Potter film!

Posted by futureactress Jul 10th 2006

AWESOME!!!!a great director combined with a great movie equals an amazing movie!!!

Posted by Rizia Jul 10th 2006

Did you ever notice M. Night Shyamalan makes the villans in most of his movies wear red? If he were to direct a HP movie, how would he deal with all those scarlet/gold clad gryffindors?

Posted by clemence713 Jul 10th 2006

dude isnt he directing that new movie Lady in the Water ! Hmm he does do a lot of horror movies maybe he could do the 7th book or something since that'll probally be the darkest but i really want Newell to direct one or something !
