WB sues 'Hari Puttar' filmmakers
WB sues 'Hari Puttar' filmmakers Warner Bros. is suing an Indian film company called Mirchi Movies because of the title of a film it had scheduled to release on September 12th - "Hari Puttar."

According to a WB spokespesron, "We have recently commenced proceedings against parties involved in the production and distribution of a movie entitled Hari Puttar. Warner Bros values and protects intellectual property rights. However, it is our policy not to discuss publicly the details of any ongoing litigation."

However, a Mirchi Movies spokesperson stated, "We registered the Hari Puttar title in 2005 and it's unfortunate that Warner has chosen to file a case so close to our film's release. In my opinion, I don't think our title has any similarity or links with Harry Potter."

Hari is apparently a popular Indian name while Puttar means son in Punjabi.

We'll keep you updated on this story. Thanks to everyone who emailed in.

lol!!! this is funny!!! second!!

Posted by Kaitlynnn Aug 27th 2008

i don't see why they're surprised. WB just loves throwing everyone off last second. and changing things right before they come out.

Posted by WB_R_LUNATICS Aug 27th 2008

first and second!!!! and why dont they just WATCH the movie?? then they could just tell or they probably just want MORE money. greedy people!

Posted by ashleyyosaurus Aug 27th 2008

I think it's pretty funny that you're using a picture of Katie Leung, a Scottish actress with a Chinese father, to illustrate this story about an Indian film.

Posted by victoire4teddy Aug 27th 2008

haha warner brothers is becoming a laughing stock lately hari puttar is just a name its not like its a movie based on a boy wizard lmaoXX

Posted by Niffler Aug 27th 2008

WB just keep getting it all wrong

Posted by magicgirl_rulz_4eva Aug 27th 2008

I started laughing when I saw this news story. It's so ridiculous that they're getting sued for naming a film "Harri Puttar". WB are getting jumped up about nothing. I think that they should at least watch the film first. It'll be a bit embarrassing for them when they realise that "Hari Puttar" has no resemblence whatsoever to the Harry Potter films!!

Posted by MysTerY_AngEl Aug 27th 2008

haha!! dis is hilarious!!! i knew sumfin like dis wud happen sooner or l8r......bt cum'on it sooo does nt hav nethin 2 do wid harry potter at all!! WB r losin it!! :P #7/8??

Posted by hkxhsx Aug 27th 2008

all i can say is.. "haha!"

Posted by sara_rr Aug 27th 2008

WB should do more research--my friend says its true wat they said about the meaning of the title 'hari putter' it's still funny, though!

Posted by Roxy2005 Aug 27th 2008

Number 1, I am a big HP fan and was just as disapointed as all of the rest of you, Number 2, Build a bridge and get over it, Number 3, There are many Hindi words that are simular to english but have total differnt meaning and contents. Number 4, Do you think WB would look into sueing someone with out more information other then just a movie title. Number 5, There are many Bollywood movies that have simular titles, but I am sure their has to be some kind of copy right issues before they do this, Number 6, How many times do we see American and British films as "pun" spin offs? Such as, National Lampon and Monty Python. My point over all keep your noses to your own business and keep out of things you have no idea what you are talking about because all of you just sound stupid.

Posted by Luna22 Aug 27th 2008

Hari Puttar, the name, had been used in an Indian movie(about four years back)-a boy,who resembeled dan,had been told by his gran that he looks like "Hari Puttar". I had watched that movie.and now Mirch Movies may have taken the idea from there.I f they have, then its very rude of them.If they haven't ,i dont know wat 2 say,but I still think its rude of them.SO dont blame Warner Brothere, they at least make the original Harry Potter movies.Lets just try 2 ignore these (POSSIBLY) absurd Harry Potter haters.

Posted by gryffindor_gal_714 Aug 27th 2008

Luna22, i've seen that movie, but I disagree w/ u. WB should see the movie before they get really embarassed just for money... I'm just saying, do they have any proof that this movie is related to the HP movies in anyway, aside from the title?

Posted by GrD Aug 27th 2008

WB is really a work of art. They are the greedious company I've ever seen. Get over it after the next three movies it's over live with it. check out http://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=9YIY3Q7x0IY

Posted by sweetpea831 Aug 27th 2008

What's up with the pic of Katie? She's Scottish not Indian!

Posted by haripotar94 Aug 27th 2008

The Harry Potter name is a trademark of Warner Brothers and in my language wchich is Bulgarian Hari Putar means Harry Potter. So Warner Brothers is having the legal right to sue this people.

Posted by sara_rr Aug 27th 2008

that doesnt make sense. there're a lot of movies released each year in every country, the titles of which probably can be translated completely differently in diff languages. so while hari putter might mean harry potter in many languages, it has been clearly explained that this is not so in hindi, or panjabi, or whatever. so, unless wb has more information--which they might as well have!--i dont think it makes sense to sue a movie just for the name

Posted by Tony_the_Terrible Aug 27th 2008

If you go to IMDB.com, and search 'Hari Puttar' for a synopsis of the movie, it sounds more like a 'Home Alone' rip-off than anything. It does take place in England, but its mainly about a family who leaves a child at home 'accidently' and he foils the attempts of burgulars to break into the house (again, 'home alone' rip-off).

Posted by bigmuggle Aug 27th 2008

up urs WB...ur retards...

Posted by Luxmbrg_Harry Aug 27th 2008

But when did WB make sense? The only language they know is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!

Posted by nehasharma Aug 27th 2008

http://www.bollywoodhunga ma.com/movies/preview/138 86/index.html Please read the preview of this movie...it has nothing to do with Harry Potter!!!

Posted by Tony_the_Terrible Aug 27th 2008

Intellectual property rights are very much "thin ice", so to speak. They are essentially filing suit just because the name sounds similar, and therefore might try to "draw" from the HP fanbase, even though the movie is completely unrelated.

Posted by crispyo Aug 27th 2008

when I first saw this I thought they were making fun of Katie Leung's accent saying "Hari Puttar" or something. lol why is there a picture of her?? a bit too random for me... anyway, who GIVES A SH!T if they mean Harry Potter or not, are WB afraid the movie will become more successful or something?! seriously...

Posted by Lateshia Aug 27th 2008

Omgosh! What is up with WB lately? LOL. Silly people.

Posted by Luna22 Aug 27th 2008

OK gryffindor_gal_714,let's see what happens.

Posted by MadEye_Moody Aug 27th 2008

LOL! I thought this was an April Fools joke when I saw the title, then remembered that it isn't April...XD

Posted by chommy Aug 27th 2008

OK, Indian filmmakers make movies that are EXACTLY like Hollywood movies like Scream, The Wedding Singer, etc. I would know seeing as I watch Indian movies with my parents from time to time (the new ones suck). They could've sued them for THOSE movies but they sue them for a NAME? WB doing something stupid AGAIN!

Posted by zaxopoulos Aug 27th 2008

That's just ridiculous

Posted by chommy Aug 27th 2008

@haripotar: Uh, no they don't. Every language is different and there are many words that sound the same. In Hindi/Urdu, cheese means 'thing' and in English, cheese is food. Hari is a Hindi name that is used in many Hindi movies and Putar is son, and when Hindi's read this name, they won't think this is cheating Harry Potter. I didn't. When my brother told me WB is suing the filmmakers of 'Hari Putar' I thought they were suing it because of the story and I didn't think it had anything to do with a the name. Then my brother said they're suing it because the name sounds the same and I was like 'WTF!? SO!?'

Posted by twilighthpbookworm Aug 27th 2008

Yeah it is ridiculous,i mean come on WB you don't need anymore money. I mean i know it is similar to the how Harry Potter is pronounced in Bulgarian, but the film isn't even similar to Harry Potter. If i would see someone making a lawsuit against them,it would have to be the writer's,and creator's who came up with the idea for "Home Alone" since it is very similar to that.

Posted by Feathery_Golden_Snidget Aug 27th 2008

Hm, I wonder if WB knows what the movie's plot is. I mean, if it's about a boy wizard, than go ahead and sue. But if it's about, say, a young boy with a dream of playing table tennis, then they should deffinitely NOT sue. Notice they didn't mention if they know more than the title, as it was probably part of the "confidentiality" part.

Posted by alyssalovesharry Aug 27th 2008

hahahaha :D i wonder what the movie is about? it doesn't say

Posted by elish95 Aug 27th 2008

actually, i agree wid warner bros here! i live in pakistan, n ppl who dun like harry potter here, usually try 2 offend it by calling it by dat name, which, btw, i find really cheap! so, i think, the indianz DID copy it cuz wel, tht name IS commonly used by harry-potter haterz here. n i hate it!

Posted by sortedintoallfourhouses Aug 27th 2008

Seriously WB? How thick can you get? If the movie doesn't even have remotely a similar plot then what's the point? Uch, WB is really starting to irritate the hell out of me.

Posted by himani Aug 27th 2008

hey im an Indian.....and i wud say the claim made by wb cant be justified. the description given of the name is totally correct. i dont kno wat the movie is bout but hello nobody wud dare make such a vlatant copy here knowing that hp films r quite famous in India. is dere a law dat movie names across world cannot have any similarity. and ya Himani is an indian name but it resembles wid hermionee.....sue me

Posted by addicted2chocolatenhp Aug 27th 2008

why is there a picture of cho? just cuz she's asian? oh, please. nowhere does it say she is from india, and even if she was, still, gosh.

Posted by himani Aug 27th 2008

and ya i agree with ppl who says dat they shud sue ppl who DO copy hollywood flicks.......if it makes a difference they r all flops here.........but guys we do make amazing movies........watch taare zameen par.....its original

Posted by Erfa Aug 27th 2008

...yet another idiotic move by Warner Brothers.

Posted by Kamion Aug 27th 2008

Hari Putar is NOT a Bollywood remake of Harry Potter???!!! M**** another illusion chattered; I would love to see a Bollywood version of Harry Potter, with lots of singing and dancing in very rich settings and over the top romance. Wouldn't that be fun, having Harry or Hermione bursting into song at the most inconvenient moments or Malfoy and his Death Eaters in shouldershaking dancing at the Ministery or so? Bummmer WB is taking away all the fun.

Posted by Kareen Aug 27th 2008

Translation of WB's comment: "We're suing them because we want to and we're just saying we can't discuss it publicly just to cover our asses." Seriously they need to stop the overrating of movies they do. Be as protective of your crappy movies as you want, its not going to do any good because eventually it will be forgotten and no one is going to care anymore.

Posted by ajrome Aug 27th 2008

that's stupid. WB needs to leave them alone.

Posted by gorgon Aug 27th 2008

WB should have at least look into the movie to see if it was a rip-off. and Chommy, The Wedding Singer was based on the hindi movie. Not the other way around.

Posted by otter_weaselxshipper Aug 27th 2008

Wait a minute...i realize that the title may mean something completely different, but "I don't think our TITLE has any SIMILARITY or links with Harry Potter." Really? Harry Potter...Hari Putar... I don't know what their definition of similar is, but it isn't the same as mine.

Posted by I_Love_Muggles Aug 27th 2008

Does the plot even have anything to do with Harry Potter?

Posted by chommy Aug 27th 2008

gorgon: Are you sure? Because the Hindi movie I'm thinking of is 'Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye' which has basically the same story as The Wedding Singer. Kahin Pyaar Na Ho Jaaye was released in 2000 and The Wedding Singer was released in 1998.

Posted by bellaxslytherin Aug 27th 2008

i dont see how this is a surprise. just like wb. they wait till last minute and try to change everything to get some money. sounds like wb to me........

Posted by phoenix_knight Aug 27th 2008

WB IS A happy-ASS COMPANY! THEY'RE JUST TRYING TO LOOK ALL GOOD TO COVER UP PUSHING HBP TO NEXT YEAR JULY.

Posted by General_Martok Aug 27th 2008

What will happen next? Are the Dementors and Death Eaters in charge at WB going to sue every person in the world named Harry Potter and demand that they change their name?

Posted by freakishBBQ Aug 27th 2008

I have no respect for WB, especially after this. This is just pathetic. I bet the movie has zero similarites with Harry Potter. WB are just being greedy little pigs.

The Fat Friar told me that Umbridge tried to get back into his [Dumbledore's] office last night after they'd searched the castle and the grounds for him. Couldn't get past the gargoyle. The Head's office has sealed itself against her. Apparenly she had a right little tantrum...
