WB sues 'Hari Puttar' filmmakers
WB sues 'Hari Puttar' filmmakers Warner Bros. is suing an Indian film company called Mirchi Movies because of the title of a film it had scheduled to release on September 12th - "Hari Puttar."

According to a WB spokespesron, "We have recently commenced proceedings against parties involved in the production and distribution of a movie entitled Hari Puttar. Warner Bros values and protects intellectual property rights. However, it is our policy not to discuss publicly the details of any ongoing litigation."

However, a Mirchi Movies spokesperson stated, "We registered the Hari Puttar title in 2005 and it's unfortunate that Warner has chosen to file a case so close to our film's release. In my opinion, I don't think our title has any similarity or links with Harry Potter."

Hari is apparently a popular Indian name while Puttar means son in Punjabi.

WTF!!!! I hate WB and now I'm seriously wondering if I should see HP at all.

Posted by nothedwig432 Aug 27th 2008

This is too hilarious!

Posted by roothalabeary Aug 27th 2008

ok first off... mirchi movies... CAN YOU PLEASE TRY TO BE A BIT MORE CREATIVE!!?? and second... WB!? wtf its not that big a deal ur just gonna loose money.

Posted by armormew Aug 27th 2008

Um...that's so mean of WB.

Posted by AccioIrmathy Aug 27th 2008

53? WB probably has some evidence to prove that it is about something Harry Potter related. But if its just the name, then thats really stupid. Are they going to sue everyone who uses the word "puttar" [son?] in each title. And its not like EVERYONE in the world knows about Harry Potter. A lot of people do, but not everyone. WB is being really cocky and getting ahead of themselves. I wonder if JK Rowling gas anything to say about it.

Posted by LunarEclipse Aug 27th 2008

This is so stupid. Why is WB so freakin obsessed with making money??

Posted by kooppatil Aug 27th 2008

THAT IS HILARIOUS!!! WB ARE SOOO RETARDED IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY...SURELY THEY WULD HAVE LOOKED UP WHAT THE WORDS ACTUALLY MEAN BEFORE SUING THEM...THEY MEAN WHAT THEY SAY.

Posted by AccioIrmathy Aug 27th 2008

has*

Posted by Tony_the_Terrible Aug 27th 2008

Its funny to read all the people who believe WB might "know something about the plot" that we don't. It takes 2 seconds to google "Hari Puttar" and find an entire synopsis of the plot, and no, the plot is not similar. However, they are suing because of the name similarity alone, because it enfringes upon their intellectual property rights and 'might' draw on the Harry Potter fanbase in India and thus be more successful than it originally would have been.

Posted by otter_weaselxshipper Aug 27th 2008

If you read the plot on IMDB, it seems like a mixture of a little bit of Harry Potter(when his aunt and uncle visit and he feels unappreciated) and Home Alone(family goes on vacation and forgets Hari Puttar at home, but Hari captures two burglars and becomes a hero) woohoo...

Posted by ginmo Aug 27th 2008

I found this funny, "We registered the Hari Puttar title in 2005 and it's unfortunate that Warner has chosen to file a case so close to our film's release." They seem to have a pattern. Anyway, I DO think it's a little close to Harry Potter... but at the same time, it isn't the exact name. I'm really undecided on this one.

Posted by bradthewizard Aug 27th 2008

I saw this story on TMZ!

Posted by claerwen7 Aug 27th 2008

typical WB! always wanting money! that title has nothing to do with HARRY POTTER!! why can't they get over that?! they're always suing other people for the STUPIDEST reasons and they've got stop! i bet they're probably going to sue all of US just for saying this! i wouldn't put it past them! I've all all my respect for them. they ruined everything...just like they did with harry Potter!

Posted by slytherinprincess922 Aug 27th 2008

WB is getting more and more ridiuclous. Do they have nothing better to do than sue everybody? serious they need to get a life. the movie has nothing to do with Harry Potter. They need to get off their high horse.

Posted by twilighthpbookworm Aug 27th 2008

That would be so funny Kamion, to see a bollywood version of Harry Potter lol. I would love to see where Harry, and Voldemort are battling they stop battling, and start singing "Why Can't We Be Friends" lol. I would crack up at that lol.

Posted by LumosSolem90 Aug 27th 2008

Oh my.... WB, are you kidding? Here in Norway we have a soap named "Heitur Pottur" gonna sue the company behind that too? Wouldn't suprise me..this is just so stupid.

Posted by WordNerd014 Aug 27th 2008

i kind of don't think that it's fair to judge when we don't know all the facts.

Posted by Vaibhav Aug 27th 2008

xD .... Warner Bros. Should use their time in making films in the right time and releaseing them than wasting their time in sueing everything they can....Ok I am an Indian and I know that Hari Puttar Sounds like Harry Potter but it doesnt mean that the movies are the same...Some research by WB won't do any harm .... I can also tell that one of the most successful countries in which the Harry Potter franchise has "ruled" is India ...It may seem a small country but one can't even imagine how many people read HP in India ...so there would have been a huge uproar from the Indian Fans if Hari Puttar was based on Harry Potter ...Also NO INDIAN actor is casted in the HP films ....and the Parvati twins (shefali and her sister) are from Bangladesh not India.... P.S. - Looks like people with "Harry" as their first name should beware coz they may be the next ones who may be sued just for fun...... or may have to pay monthly tax to WB for using their copyrighted material

Posted by evanna11 Aug 27th 2008

Kamion that would be SO funny! Haha, LumosSolem90 they really do have a soap serie called that? That's funny:P Ow, and btw, why te pic of Katie?

Posted by LunaLovegood123 Aug 27th 2008

WOW. Its like...wow i cant even say anything

Posted by HPbrownLove1 Aug 27th 2008

despite the similarity between the names of the films, hari and puttar are actually legit words/names in india. this makes no sense.

Posted by LumosSolem90 Aug 27th 2008

evanna11: Yeah we really do xD It's soap made of minerals from Iceland or something, I always think of HP when I hear that name xD

Posted by WordNerd014 Aug 27th 2008

srsly... i think we're really missing out on something crucial and we don't have all the information.

Posted by halfbloodprincess16 Aug 27th 2008

hahaha hari puttar! that's funny! but unless this film is about a bunch of wizards going to a school called...Warthogs or something...i don't think WB has any reason to sue.

Posted by TonksTheTiger Aug 27th 2008

Hari Putter?? Lawl! XD

Posted by Ram90016 Aug 27th 2008

Well, no surprise at this.. Just another try for W.B. to get more money out of someone else...it's ridiculous. It's like.. do they have the copy right to Hari Puttar or something.. it's a completely different name. Just because it sounds similar to Harry Potter, doesn't mean W.B. has to right to take that name too. So, after hearing this news and of course several other negative things concerning W.B., I'm going to have to declare that I truly and greatly dislike WB and wish their selfishness little selves would just go away..

Posted by sevviesnapples Aug 27th 2008

haha rofl this is ridiculous

Posted by TrueHufflepuff Aug 27th 2008

That's supid... Warner bros is just greedy for their money... >.> Made me laugh, though xDD

Posted by GemmaGinny Aug 27th 2008

hahaha, thats funny! "In my opinion, I don't think our title has any similarity or links with Harry Potter." oh no because Hari Puttar and Harry Potter sounds absolutley NOTHING alike?! "I think it's pretty funny that you're using a picture of Katie Leung, a Scottish actress with a Chinese father, to illustrate this story about an Indian film." ahahah i agree :) i can see where WB are coming from, but tbh theyve pissed me off too much with the delayed film for me to back them up.

Posted by Tony_the_Terrible Aug 27th 2008

Whoever thinks India is a small country is very misinformed. The population of India is more than TWICE that of the US, at 1.1 billion. I hardly think that justifies calling them a small country, Vaibhav.

Posted by beth_28 Aug 27th 2008

Are they for real? Are they that desprate for money? Wb are such greedy pigs. Here is another example of how they just disrupt things so close to movies release dates!

Posted by Vaibhav Aug 27th 2008

Tony_the_Terrible, bro I said that It "SEEMS" to be a small country ...I said I live in India .... Also I completely agree with you in the population but many people think India is a small country based on its area , and may not have many fans of Harry potter .....but IF you live in India ....you must know that there are tonnes of fans of Harry potter in India ....and According to me one of the highest ....I m sorry if my words were not clear ..... Cheers

Posted by haripotar94 Aug 27th 2008

IF WARNER BROTHERS HAVE DONE IT IN OTHER TIMES YOU WOULD JUST SAY OK. BUT NOW THEYVE CHANGED THE RELEASE DATE YOU ARE ATTACKING THEM LIKE SOME WILD CREATURES.AND IF YOUR FIRST THOUGHT IS THAT THEY WANT MONEY THEN YOU ARE WANT MONEY TOO.

Posted by free23allie Aug 27th 2008

Umm... are you kidding me?!? Seriously WB! This is just comepletely and utterly, a wtf moment lol. Well, In case anyone had any doubts about this: WB obviously doesn't care about the fans or the quality of the films, just the money the fans give them from their "quality" flims. Haha I like what General_Martok said: "...WB going to sue every person in the world named Harry Potter and demand that they change their name?" Good one... but i wouldn't be surprized... at all...

Posted by chommy Aug 27th 2008

haripotar: I would be mad even without the delay, but the fact that they delay the movie and then do this makes us even madder. And please don't type is Caps Lock; it makes you look like a 10 year old.

Posted by hpfan4444 Aug 27th 2008

This is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. Well, actually it sounds just like WB, who's mind works like this: it has a built in "money" detctor (not metal detector, money detector). Beep beep beep beep b$$p b$$p, oh, found some.

Posted by fawkes_phoenix Aug 27th 2008

i'm recently really starting to hate WB. they're soooooo paranoid and absolutely want everything to be PERFECT FOR THEM.

Posted by Mariami Aug 27th 2008

LOL, you know what? I'm just glad Jo has clarified those rights are WB to fight for and not hers, at least people will stop calling her a greedy biotch, I mean we all now WB has always been all about the money.

Posted by Atsuko_Chan Aug 27th 2008

WB's gonna lose this one.

Posted by boris83 Aug 27th 2008

I think this lawsuit is plainly ridiculous and, as others said, pathetic. Why didn't they sue the author of the book "Barry Trotter" then??? Isn't there a similarity just like the one with Hari Puttar? WB clearly does not know the meaning of the words "parody", "quotation" or "cultural reference". The next step will be suing everyone who's ever said "what's up doc?" in their lives just because Bugs Bunny is a WB character...

Posted by rooon Aug 27th 2008

That just makes me want to throw up. I'll probably see Equus instead of HP.

Posted by silverphoenix21 Aug 27th 2008

Well here we go again *sigh*. Every time this happens I think WB can't get any stupider, but apparently in their case stupidity is a virus with continuous outbreaks. And I'm so not saying this just because I'm Indian. The only people who have even the slightest justification of suing this movie are the makers of Home Alone. Policy of not discussing details publicly, my foot. They're just trying to cover themselves up. And what is up with the picture of Cho? Indian does not translate as any Asian person.

Posted by yourejustassaneasiam Aug 27th 2008

this is stupid.

Posted by Wierdgirl5834 Aug 27th 2008

warner bros, is kinda over doing it. So what if their title resembles, "Harry Potter"? It's not like they're making a cheap bollywood remake of it. I don't see the point in suing...but of course, it's always about money for them.
