WB sues 'Hari Puttar' filmmakers
According to a WB spokespesron, "We have recently commenced proceedings against parties involved in the production and distribution of a movie entitled Hari Puttar. Warner Bros values and protects intellectual property rights. However, it is our policy not to discuss publicly the details of any ongoing litigation."
However, a Mirchi Movies spokesperson stated, "We registered the Hari Puttar title in 2005 and it's unfortunate that Warner has chosen to file a case so close to our film's release. In my opinion, I don't think our title has any similarity or links with Harry Potter."
Hari is apparently a popular Indian name while Puttar means son in Punjabi.
We'll keep you updated on this story. Thanks to everyone who emailed in.

wat the hell is with the pic!!!! that is soo freakin racest....seriously wat the hell is taht all about
my mom's from Bulgaria! Sorry, someone posted a comment and said their language is Bulgarian... This is such a great reason to sue someone! Hey, you're name sounds like Harry Potter! Let's sue you! LOL!
Firstly they postpone the movie .Then they have these stupid ways of earning money. How much more low are they gonna get.Even if the movie has similarities, they cannot sue somebodies freedom of expression.I mean 1000's of spoof's have been made before this. Its totally preposterous.
that's kind of strange!!!! i mean even though the title sounds like Harry Potter, but i'm sure that the movie and plot are totally different, especially the plot!!!!
LOL I ACTUALLY FIND THIS REALLY FUNNY AND GREAT! JUST COZ IT WILL ANNOY WB! IT WUD PROBABLY TURN OUT TO BE A BETTER FILM THAN HARRY POTTER ANYWAY! so for once i find this A great laugh n i wudnt normally say this as i LOVE hp!
I, like a number of others, couldn't give a rats arse about anything that WB has to say on ANY matter. Maybe this 'Hari Puttar' movie does have similarities in plot content and maybe (more likely since they wish not to confirm any details) it's just a language barrier comparison which some single minded idiot at the WB saw while looking at the films title and all of a sudden the dollar sign sprang out of the butt crack in their head. Eitherway, I don't care, I lost all respect for the company even before their latest idiotic decision and their pathetic excuse for it. Since I haven't commented in a while, I for one just feel like saying that there's not really much point in me saying that I'm going to boycott the next official movie, because I'm a big fan of the books, but I WILL be making sure that I only see it ONCE in the CHEAPEST theatre that I can find and will then only buy the DVD once it is has reached its CHEAPEST price instore. Sure it will be a VERY long time before I get to own the movie, but WB's takings from me will be minimal ... And I will still begrudge every penny of it, and of all future releases. Does disrespecting the consumers really pay off?
As i have seen the poster of the movie,it has some similarities if not many. But we are a democracy,we can do anything we want to.
Whereas I think WB is being rather ridiculous, seeing as how the plot has absolutely nothing to do with Harry Potter, I also think the creators of this film should have realized that the names do sound familiar, and confusion might be caused by this similarity. In other words, everyone involved is quite silly, though I think more silliness belongs on WB's side.
I read the plot summary on IMDb at http://www.imdb.com/title /tt1255873/plotsummary It sounds nothing like Harry Potter. WB is a bunch of greedy pigs, and this last month they have proved it more than once with the date change of HBP (to make more money on a better release date), and now this BS.
I think WB stands for "We're B**tards"
I honestly don't see how WB can sit there and complain about this. This is proof that if you can dish it out, you should stand there, suck it up and take it like a man. WB should keep their collective noses out of the affairs/business of Foreign countries. Or at least take the time to study and learn what the movie is about before you file a complaint. Good luck Marchi Movies. They do say every cloud does have a silver lining. Hopefully people will learn what this movie is about and either see it in theatres or rent the movie when it becomes available here. If WB wanted attention, they got it again.
HAHA!! thats just too great!
Screw you WB!!!! Zouck Mydicko is my name, so sue me WB if it sounds like something else!! What a ridiculous band of pathetic morons WB is!!! It is unfortunate artists have to resort to WB for funds! WB does nothing other than have the money to make more money. There are no creatives at WB, only sharks, business people that can't care less about Harry Potter fans and do not undestand a thing other than numers in dollar signs. WB...SCREW YOUUUU!!
Now THAT is halarious! ha ha!
Warner Bros. needs to get that brookstick out of their ass already.
they just want more money.
Seriously? I can't believe there are this many people who would disagree with what WB is doing. It's called protecting your brands. And anyway, they are a company made up of stockholders. By law, they are required to try to make as much money as possible. That's capitalism, or should we just do away with that because apparently it's such a bad thing to want to protect intellectual property? By the way, the name is enough to sue on. It doesn't matter if the plot isn't similar. It seems pretty obvious that the filmmakers are trying to capitalize on the franchise name, even if the plot is different. And don't give me this crap about what the name means in Punjabi. Was it really necessary to put both names together? Or were all the other good surnames taken? Give me a break. WB is totally right in suing. It's what any smart business would do.
even if "Hari Puttar" is about Harry Potter, I hope WB loses. Idiots.
In five words or less? Well, THIS is crap. I hope that WB takes this one back. I bet the film has NOTHING to do with Harry Potter, too. I'd say more, but I don't know who'll see this post, so I'll restrain myself....
WB has just secured their spot at #1 on my sh*t list. It's ridiculous how far they'll go to make money. Now if the plot of Hari Puttar had any resemblance to Harry Potter, I would see their point in suing. But I don't think it does, it wasn't mentioned in the article.
Mirchi Movies has my 10000000000000% support on this one.. wb has lost my respect
i don't think that it's fair to judge when we don't have all the facts.
Its really Stupid of WB. "Hari" is indeed a very common name in India & "Puttar" again is a very commonly used term for "son". The movie has an indian name & it means "Hari's Son" Whts more the trailors n promo's bear no resemblance to the Harry Potter concept If they really have nothing better to do... why not give us Half Blood Prince in November ? Whts WB playing at ???
Wow. WB has officially lost all respect I had for them. This movie is more like Home Alone than Harry Potter and they ignorantly sued over a simailar sounding name. I'm getting so sick of these ridiculous lawsuits. It's totally unnecessary and completely uncalled for to sue over every little thing that might (but probly isn't) be a copyright violation.
Oh my god! this is too funnyy!! I mean people just used to make fun of Harry Potter by Saying Hari Puttar or Helicopter(Yes they say that!) but, woah, I never knew that it would be made into such a big issue! And by naming a movie called Hari Puttar, clearly it would be somethign funny!
Oh great another opportunity for WB to make more money. I have to admit that that is way awomse hari puttar i would see that!:P
All of you people who are saying that we shouldnt judge and that we dont have all the facts are stupid. The plot of the movie is so different than Harry Potter. Please look up the facts before you accuse others of being judgemental.
WB just wants more money
"In my opinion, I don't think our title has any similarity or links with Harry Potter." Oh, come on! 'Hari Puttar'... 'Harry Potter'... if you can't see the similarities than you must be blind. Honestly, I'm not surprised that WB has done this- even though there is no similarities between the film, and the film isn't exactly going to make much of an impact on the English-speaking world, they still want more money!
kay. really. AS if WB doesn't have enough money already. i mean they're postponing HP so they can make more money, do they really randomly have to go suing random film company SO close to the release date, just to screw them over? i mean come on. get a life WB.
Maybe I wouldn't be annoyed with WB and I'd back them up if they weren't sitting on HBP for another year. Yes, I am bitter.
I'm Indian, and I absolutely despise Bollywood (HELLO!, the name's derived from Hollywood!). Being a HUGE HP fan, this has given me another reason to hate Bollywood and the filmmakers for copying the name (kind of.)
Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha, Ha!!! When I first saw this title, I thought for sure it was the title for a Triple X movie. Doesn't matter if WB is suing, they don't really care about our opinions anyway.
I THINK WARNER BROS SHOULD STOP THINKING THAT THE INDIAN MEDIA WANNA STEAL THE SPOT LIGHT FROM THEM.......BECAUSE AS FAR AS I KNOW THESE WORD'S ''HARI PUTTER'' SIMPLY MEANS ''THE SON OF HARI'' .......NOW DON'T YOU THINK WE HAVE GOT IT ALL WRONG.......????????????? ?
Please CHANGE-THAT-PIC! There are Indian characters in HP, aren't there? The Patil sisters, for instance...
Just for a laugh, Mirchi Movies should change the release date of Hari Puttar to Nov. 21, to pi$$ of WB more! that would be amusing
I think the makers of the move "Troll" should sue WB. After all they had a character named Harry Potter long before the HP movies. I talking 1986 here. They just tried to capitlize on Trolls success.
The fact that the WB theme song is the Looney Tunes says it all folks.
LOL. Oh WB. My heroes. It's fun trying to picture this decision being made.
Whew, this seriously is ridiculous! Hari Puttar has no links whatsoever to Harry Potter (except the similar sounding name). WB has certainly lost it's mind & if really do think their case is justified, why the hell are they suing them now? Was'nt 2005 the year the movie got it's right? Just before it's release they sue them...... this surely implies they are after the money. And why are they targetting India? Last time they sued some Indians for running a festival in Harry Potter theme. What's up with them? Everyone knows HP is theirs & JKR's- no one is interested in stealing their ideas.
this is fudge ridiculous. not even a bit funny. that is all.
knowing what i know about law, they have no case.. its just another blatant attempt to get more money in their pockets, just like the HPB delay. WB You are only making a bad name for yourselves!
What's wrong with WB? This movie sounds absolutely nothing like Harry Potter, especially since Hari is supposedly a very common name in India. WB's is freaking anal, bordering on greedy, but maybe I'm still a bit angry because of the HBP delay and the DH split...both clearly all about money and milking Harry Potter. I'm disappointed in the way WB is managing this franchise.
And WB continues to prove how evil and/or stupid they really are ... really, guys, keep it coming. It's very entertaining to watch yourselves destroy your own reputation, it really is. Idiots.
So I have to wonder...if my last name was Potter and I chose to name my son Harry, would I have to pay royalties or fear being sued?
Oh, this is surprising The WB is being awful and greedy. I'm wondering what Jo's thoughts are on this. WB is really making the entirety of the Harry Potter fan base extremely pissed. Whatever they're trying to do to cover up their horrible set back is not going to work. Remember, boycott opening weekend.
After reading this story, I think that WB is absolutely ready to file lawsuits left, right, and center! I'm Indian and the Hari Puttar film is actually similar to a Home Alone concept. I read the summary online. Why the crap is WB trying to make money? Are they purposely trying to ruin the Harry Potter films and get away with it?
SwordofGodric... do you honestly think that most of these people read anything more than just the information provided here? and even if they look up the stupid plot on imdb... how much is that going to tell us? maybe wb has a case, and maybe they don't... but would they take out a law suit based on nothing? and most of you people haven't gone to law school, (i mean some of you have, but the majority haven't) so what exactly do you know about intellectual property rights! and most people r just biased against wb (even if they don't think they are). ur opinion is your opinion... and my opinion is that you shouldn't judge unless you know everything about this, which you DON'T! why don't YOU look up the facts before you go and call me stupid!
they have every reason to sue. obviously the indians are taking advantage of the fame of the harry potter franchise to appeal to moviegoers. if it was me, i'd try to stop it too.. 'don't touch what's not yours'. and if it grants me $$$ in the process why not? i'd just use that to further improve the movies that (some of) u adore so much. if it's true that many indians already mock harry potter by saying 'hari puttar', its quite clear that's where these mirchi dudes got the title from; from a common joke derived from the massively successful series "harry potter". now wouldn't that just boost their ticket sales? and if even it wasn't their intention or reason, the fact remains: they'll make more money than they would have had the title been different. and those saying 'oh i'm naming my son harry potter, r u gonna come sue me?'.. well thats a lame argument, if it can even be called one. of course they're not gona sue u, stupid. unless, of course you decide to make a reality show of ur son's life, title it 'hari puttar' and release it to the world. it wont be the content that'll bring home money, it'll be the curiously familiar title.. shame on you, cheat.
I just hope Hari Puttar fans dont start a site called mugglenut now.
