Half-Blood Prince turns one year old
It was just one year ago today that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released to the world! Even though so much time has passed, fans are still going wild over Horcruxes (Can Harry find them?), Snape (Good or Bad?), and just WHO will die in the final book?

Remember the moment you first heard the title of the sixth novel? Or the second that you laid eyes on that all-important release date? What's more, possibly in another year from now the entire series will be finished with the final book being released.

Post your Half-Blood Prince release party stories in the comments! And maybe celebrate by reading HBP for the 8174th time.

My release story: I had a church retreat the next day, so my mom said I couldn't go and get the book at midnight (I was 14 at the time) so I sulked and got it the next afternoon and devoured it in two days. Wish my story was more interesting...it definately will be for book 7 since I'll be able to drive! (unless it's 7-7-07...my 16th bday...in which case that would be the coolest thing ever).

Posted by xScarletxPhoenix Jul 16th 2006

I cant believe its already been a year!! Well at least theres alot of HP stuff coming out soon. Not gunna lie....Who else is getting fully dressed and going to the premiere? MEEEEEEEEEEEE. Yes dorks rule the world

Posted by hp_lover Jul 16th 2006

Thats so cool but i must say that i have only read it three times. Oh well. IM reading the fourth again now. Do you remeber when we found out the title for the 6th book. How close was it to the publication date?

Posted by mcswan03 Jul 16th 2006

i was supposed to go to a midnight party lat year, but then my friend invited me to go on vacation that weekend. so i made his parents stop at a target to buy the book and i read it on the way home. but now i just want my book seven title!!

Posted by Wizard_Rain Jul 16th 2006

I went to my local Chapters for the midnight release party. They had a bunch of activities for younger kids and my sisters made their own costumes (Slytherin and Griffyndor ties) and were in the costume contest. I was the one who had to stand in line for half an hour while my sisters went home, but I did get first dibs on the book, and had to hold my eyelids open as I read into the early morning.

Posted by freepalestine_abm Jul 16th 2006

yay

Posted by lunabonamor Jul 16th 2006

i remember going to Barnes and Nobles and entering the costume contest... i dressed up as Luna. I won third place and got the third spot in line, I was even on tv briefly. As soon as I got it I hypervenelated! I got my book looked at the last three words: "Ron and Hermione" and then I began reading the whole car ride home. That night I stayed up until 2:00 AM I will treasure the green wristband I got with my HBP book forever!

Posted by MargaretLouise Jul 16th 2006

i went to the barnes and noble midnight party and theyre were all these little kids there but it was awesome.. they had this Catch the Snitch ish and the green bracelets (mine was stolen =[ ) and i was like tearing up at midnight after having to wait online for like a whole hour (it was soo worth it) and then i stayed up till 7 in the morning to read it and then me and my sister ate some pizza. when dumbles died, i cried like a little baby and my 21 year old sister had to sleep in my bed with me cause she was crying, too. it was the BEST. =)

When Half Blood Prince was released, I was in Hawaii. I was so sad that I couldn't go to a Midnight Magic Party! And I had already reserved a copy at B&N before I knew of my trip, so I couldn't BUY another one...I had to was half a week and it was terrible! I'm ashamed to say that over the whole year, I've only read it the one time. After I read it, I started the series over because it had been a while since I read the first books. I got half way through Goblet of Fire and then got distracted by school and other books. But I'm sure by next summer, I'll finish 4 and make it through to 6...maybe even twice.

Posted by ANonnyMouse Jul 16th 2006

i'm sorry, you must be behind, i'm reading it for the 8175th time. :-) actually, i slept before the midnight release... and then my dad woke me up at 11:30, and we went to get in line at barnes and noble. we'd gotten a number (53) earlier, so we weren't that far from the front. i pretty much got the book, went home, and read it in five hours straight. my mom was in england at the time, so i called her and she was like "it's 4:30 am! what are you doing up?" and i was deleriously happy. but that was before i read the end... anyway, that's my HBP story, and it's past midnight, so i should go finish reading... :-)

I went to our borders in our local mall in Taylor Michigan to stand in line. the earlier you got their the better the ticket you got so you didnt have to stand in line to whole time. Because of this AWESOME HARRY POTTER NIGHT many of the stores in the mall were staying open until 1 am so the fans could shop all at the same time. My cousin and i are 20 yrs old and we ended up playing the first HP trivia game on the floor ion the center of the mall with three 9 year olds. Just goes to show you the diveristy of the HP fans. We all love each other and could always count on each other for a good time. For that I Love JKR!!!

Posted by amortentiabrewer Jul 16th 2006

Earlier that night I went to opening night of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with two of my fellow Harry Potter friends. Later, I went to the midnight party and was third in line! I finished it in under 10 hours, staying up all night at my friends house. It was helped along by the half a birthday cake left from her mom's birthday party and a TON of soda.

Posted by CarolTL Jul 16th 2006

Oh darn.........I've only read HBP 8170 times. I must be really slow. :)

Posted by latif687 Jul 16th 2006

i want book 7!! top 20...???

Posted by horcrux17 Jul 16th 2006

I went down to my local book store in my small, stupid rural town. I had to wait until 8.00 to get it, because the owner didn't want to wait up all night. That sucked, but in the end, it only took me 12 hours to read, so I was done by the end of the day. I pretty much stayed up all night doing HP quizzes, and chatting in HP chatrooms. It was SO COOL!! I love how one cause has brought me together with so many good friends. Thank you, JRK for the best times of my life. HP Forever!!

In my town the relesse party was not just in a book store but the whole downtown was made to look like Diagonally. They closed of two streets and had people selling butterbear from carts. It was so much fun! At midnight everyone sat in the middle of the street in front of the book store and waited for the store to let people in to pay fof their book. When they did everyone jumped up and down and huged strangers. I orderd my book from England so it didn't come for a week. i didn't talk to any of my friends for that week in case they spoiled it for me. When it did come I read it in about 10hr burst into tears and started to reread it again right away. Sorry this is so long!

Posted by Raiden01 Jul 16th 2006

I went to Ralphs Supermarket at 11:55. There was only one other person there. I even got a discount with a coupon! I left at 12 and finished the book before the sun came up. No big release party, I just cared about getting the book, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Posted by acacia59601 Jul 16th 2006

Purple cloak, $40. Heeled boots, $20. Showing up at the midnight opening as Bellatrix Black and scaring the shisnicks out of a bunch of little Gryffindor wannabes, Priceless. I went to my local Hastings dressed as a young Bellatrix Black. I entered the costume contest and won a free copy of the book! And got it delivered as into my hands at midnight so I got it before everyone else in line! Still had to wait in line for the Audio book though. So whenever my brother tries to tease me about a grown woman dressing up for midnight openings, I tell him that it saved me money before, and it makes me happy. He just rolls his eyes and goes back to whatever he was doing before.

Each book of the series has revealed more of a bigger plot and with HBP it was clear how much work Jo did in advance, placing her clues throughout the preceding five books, leading up to the Horcrux surprise, to only name one of many surprises. She is truly a genius and deserving of all the wealth in its many forms that have come her way. I'm anxiously awaiting the 7th and final book, as is the rest of the world, but I will also be sorry to see it end. Jo, you're the best.

Half-Blood Prince...oh, the memories. :) I was actually at an anime/gaming convention (Connecticon, anyone?) with my two best friends in the world. I was all dressed up in a Gryffindor uniform, and there were a whole bunch of things planned in honor of the big night. At midnight, I was in line to get my book, and was counting how many feet the table was away from me. When I got the book, I bolted out of the room and found my friends on a couch in the hallway. I threw my things on the floor, and just jumped around with the book in my arms. Then we sat down and started reading it out loud. It was one of the greatest nights of my life, and I'll never forget it! :) I just got home from the convention again this year, and I saw a video of the one last year. It was awesome!

One year ago right now I was forty minutes away from HBP, waiting in the bookstore looking at other books and looking through 'I Spy' books to kill the time. I was first in line. Ha.

Posted by Kadaj Jul 16th 2006

I didnt have to stay up or anything. I just walked into the book shop the next morning. Payed $13 for HBP and walked out. No line. No hassle.

I got it by mail from Amazon... after school me and my girlfriend (whom I had gotten hooked on HP) lay on the bed together and read it... that was so great... well, she's gone since the beginning of September... but I still hope... it would be great to be with her when the final books comes out... and to read it together... oh well, now I'm sad... nevermind.

Posted by crookshanks Jul 16th 2006

*hugs MikeB above her* I hope your girlfriend comes back to read it with you. :>

Aww.... thanks crookshanks... that was sweet... thank you! Now I just hope the last book won't hit the shelves before that happens... :) On another note... The great thing... I'm 22 and the only people that shoot weird looks at me for being a huge HP fan are hardcore LOTR-fans... lol Not that I don't love LOTR... but HP is HP... *shrugs*... I even got my mom hooked... :)

Ah, premiere night. That reminds me, I still need those pictures developed, suppose it’ll take book seven, and a year thereafter for those ones. I reserved two copies (one regular, one deluxe) at Barnes & Nobles. So, I took two of my dear friends with my for the midnight release. We ended up arriving late, which was my fault entirely, because my costume took forever to put on. I went as "Just-Broke-Out-Of-Azkaban" Bellatrix, my one friend as Narcissa and my other as…well, a random Slytherin. The store was packed when we arrived, and though there were no costume contests, or any contests for that matter, I enjoyed being surrounded by so many fellow Harry Potter fans. There, we met some friends of friends (one whom I insisted on calling Rita Skeeter) and another girl dressed as Voldemort. We became fast friends, and until we received our books, I followed her around shouting: “All hail the Dark Lord!” I’ve been told I made a decent Death Eater. Anyway, in the end, after we all received our copies, my friends and I spent the night at my house, where I proceeded to fall asleep atop Chapter One.

I work at a bookstore, so we had about 20 boxes of HBP sitting around in the back for a week beforehand, driving me INSANE (my boss explicitly told us that it was against the law to read any part of them at all). Then, I had to work that day so I kept selling the books, but I had to wait all day before I could take my own copy home and start it! Agh!

Posted by XboredX Jul 16th 2006

I was at a Barnes & Noble over a thousand miles from home. I was on an internship quite a bit north of where I live, and had gotten my reservation setup pretty early along (considering I arrived there at the beginning of June). At midnight I was in the unending, tormentous line, hoping, nay praying, that it would speed up. At about 12:40 or so (the line was crazy and there were, for some reason, special people who got to get them first first - no one told me) I had book in hand and was headed to my car (which was parked along the curb at a nearby closed bank - since the parking lot of B&N was gridlocked). At about 1am Central time, I was back at the home I was living in, nestling up and reading the first few words. I read straight until about 8am. Then, believe it or not, I had a volunteer commitment, helping collect balls at a Charity Golf Tournament in the area. I had the book with me in our cart and read between strokes. When I got back to the house at about 2-3ish, I resumed reading. Finished pretty shortly thereafter.

i think i will always remember that night. me and 3 of my friends and one of thier older sisters and young brother went to the big barns and noble attacked to our mall and walked up to the desk in the front. They gave us the neon green wristband and a packet of trival papers and stuff like that. i was number 17!! and then we went into the mall and went to see charlie and the chocolate factory. then we went to eat dinner and meet with a couple of my other friends. the mall was closing because it was 10 so we went back to barns and noble. and it was PACKED!! there were a bunch of kids dressed up and upstairs they had set up tables to make wands, get your fortune told, and there was a hat decorating table. it was so cool because all of us just took a bunch of books we wanted to read and got our own aisle and just sat down. THen me and one of my frineds got bored so we went downstaris to the music section and they were playing the harry potter movies there. and when i looked behind the desk they had the harry potter boxes just sitting on the floor waiting to be opened. When 12 rolled around the whole place counted down it was amazing. i got the book and screamed. One of the best nights ever!!

Wow, a year!! It feels so soon that I was going to the midnight party to get my copy. Half-Blood Prince was such a great book. Now with only one book left things are really starting to sink in. I'm going to have some sort of combination of smiling and tears while getting book seven.. ha. Time sure does fly.

Posted by harrypotteretard Jul 16th 2006

at midnight i went to the premier party with 3 of my best friends. it was 6 in the morning by the time i finished it. i was literally sobbing my eyes out so i called my friend sarah (even more of a HP freak then me) and she tried to kill me because i almost ruined the book for her because she doesn't read as fast. so i called my other friend claire who reads faster than me and we sobbed on the phone for about an hour until my big sis came out (she didn't want to read the books) and she tried to calm me down. it was like 5 in the morning wen i got to the inferi scene and wen i was reading it my dog jumped onto the couch and almost gave me a heart attack! it was a really fun night. my friend becca won a pre-copy of Eldest and she let me borrow it because she doesn't like that series. it was definitely the only night that year when i had almost the funnest time in my life and then ended it by crying and having my best friend hang up on me

Awwww! Yayay! I remember last year at the late night party. Waiting forever!!!! I loved it.

Posted by Glary8402 Jul 16th 2006

I went up to a local borders with my cousin and a friend at 11:00 PM on friday night to wait to get HBP at midnight. I was wroking at a hospital at the time and as such I worked all weekend and I wasn't off until Monday. I wanted to read it all straight through so badly that I refused to read it bit by bit. I had plans that I had no way around for both Saturday nad Sunday after work and realized I wouldn't have time to read it straight through. I ended up locking the book up, with a combination lock, in a foot locker I owned for when I moved to and from school. I put a big note on it that said, "Do not open until Sunday, July 17, Evening". Sure enough, as soon as I got home from my plans Sunday evening, I tore into it and finished sometime around 5 AM Monday Morning.

Posted by PotterMust Jul 16th 2006

I went to borders with my friends and this nice lady told us that we could wait in another line which was WAY shorter than the one were standing in, so we went over and she was right! We laid hands on the books in just five minutes! We read the first three chapters at Burger King, with Scrimgeour, Snape's house, Narcissa's weird nickname...Then I went home and my mum yelled at me for not retuning home immediately after I got the book. Pssssh parents just don't get it do they? I finished it in the next two days reading the bulk of it in my grandma's house. Dumbledore died and so did my soul it seemed. I was remarkably pissed at Snape but after some thought, I decided, he was really a good guy. My absolute favourite line of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince '"I am not worried Harry," said Dumbledore, his voice a little stonger despite the feezing water, "I am with you."'

Posted by n0cturne Jul 16th 2006

My HBP release party is one I'm never going to forget. I met the love of my life on that night one year ago and it's been the best year of my life (despite Dumbley-dores dying - I cried like an absolute baby). There's always going to be a special place in my heart for my local Barnes & Noble and for that release party.
