Issacs tortures himself at night to prepare for HBP
Issacs tortures himself at night to prepare for HBP Jason Issacs, who plays Lucius Malfoy in the Potter films, has given a new interview to Ain't It Cool News where he discusses how he prepares for his roles in Potter:

And then HARRY POTTER, it's been such an enormous part of my life for years now, and almost everything else I do, I knock myself out to try and make things real--I research them, I over-research them. I steep myself in it and torture myself at night trying to make something interesting and believable and human. But then you suddenly get handed a wand and full-length velvet cape, and you're sharing scenes with some of the biggest and best scene stealers who have ever lived. You really have to hit the ground running. To give that much joy to so many people and to have such a laugh doing it feels like an embarrassment of riches.

Jason also notes that his character does not have a role in Half-Blood Prince and may only appear in a moving painting.

He really is crazy. It's great to see an actor in the films who loves being a part of them so much! He's a brilliant Lucius- I wish he had more scenes, too!

My goodness, I love this man far, FAR too much. It's fabulous to see a great actor, who has played some real landmark roles on TV and film, act so humble and yet have so much fun at the same time. Mr. Isaacs, you are a credit to the Harry Potter movies and all that an actor (and a gentleman) should be. I only wish some of the other actors respected and enjoyed the priviledge of working in the HP movies as much as you do. I am glad that you will continue being part of this gorgeous, fantastical world. I look forward to immersing myself in your excellent sense of play and presence on the screen. PS: Any chance of more The State Within? Talk to your BBC peeps!

I wish some of the other actors were that enthusiastic about the films, instead of the "this one is darker" crap.

Posted by the_patronus_seeker Dec 30th 2008

Why would he be in a painting though?

Posted by tonks654 Dec 30th 2008

how could u hate him? hes so enthusiastic and happy and responds to interviewers wonderfully! hes so happy and it makes me really unedge for the film!

Posted by kalb Dec 30th 2008

Lucius was only mentioned in the book, so the fact he has no scenes seems correct to me.

Posted by Kamion Dec 30th 2008

what a great idea: Lucius as a speaking portrait. As WB has cut Shirley Henderson out of the movie as Moaning Mytrle (HOWDID THEY DARE!!!) we could have Draco wailing in front of a portrait of his father with portrait!Lucius pusshing him on to be Man and Malfoy and just finish off that old fool DD. Threat to withdraw his fatherly love could push Draco of the edge to continue what he has started ( Remember, wicked as he may be Lucius loves Draco as a father loves his son)

There is so much wrong with this headline it's not even funny.

Posted by lgmxo Dec 30th 2008

why isnt he in the movie?! only a painting !?! i really hate WB.

Posted by Curiouser Dec 30th 2008

That's pretty much what I was going to point out... You mean Jason Isaacs doesn't torture himself at night to prepare for Harry Potter, right, Andrew?

Posted by SailorSlytherin Dec 30th 2008

Aw... Just for that he needs to be in the movies more. I mean, how many of the other actors are that passionate about the role? Poor Mr. Isaacs... :(

Posted by Ishi Dec 30th 2008

It's ISAACS, not ISSACS. And that's sadly not the first news with this mistake.

Posted by MrPoe Dec 30th 2008

Wait, what? If he's not gonna be in the film then why the fudge is he torturing himself to prepare frot the role?

Posted by hermyluvr Dec 30th 2008

oh God, Jason Isaacs is BY FAR the most enthusiastic of all the actors! He literally seems to ENJOY his role, which is really nice to see! Plus, he does an amazing job portraying his character! But when I first saw this title, all I could think of was like him sitting in his basement with those medieval torturing devices...

no lucius? darn. that sucks.

Posted by twitchy_little_ferret Dec 30th 2008

didn't say darn. said d a m n.

I just love this guy and everything he appears in.

He refers to "torturing himself" for OTHER roles, trying to make them realistic. But for HP he is indicating how fun it is to just go and act the pure villiain. He means that it doesn't require losing sleep at night, as it is a fantasy, and his part doesn't require the same kind of realism as other roles do. He is meant to be the Big Bad Wolf and nothing more complicated. However, if they do well on DH, although his part is small, we'll see a little "complication" with his character (please, please!).
