[Confirmed] HBP receives PG rating from the MPAA
UPDATE: The MPAA's official site has been updated with the rating. You can see it by clicking here and searching for Harry Potter. Thanks to Steven for the tip!Rope Of Silicon and Ain't It Cool News are both reporting that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has received a PG rating by the Motion Picture Association of America. Surprising, given that Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix both received PG-13 ratings.
The MPAA rated it PG for "scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality." We're currently checking this with Warner Brothers to make sure it's legit.
Thanks to Chris, Scott, Geoffrey, and Nizar for the tip!

Lol, really? Okay. Cool. :)
movie please!!!!
Wha-? After two PG-13 Harry Potter movies, they (whoever they are :P) are changing it to PG?? Surely this movie is PG-13 with all of the blood (Harry's nose breaking and Sectumsempra), Quidditch being more violent, the Burrow attack, the cursed necklace and a very important character dying... :S
WHAT!?!?! Not possible... Inferi? SECTUMSEMPRA!!!?? Ho w can this be?
I second the7thhorcrux. Also, even if they cut out those scenes (which makes no sense whatsoever), it's not appropriate. All they want is money... -.-
NO!
Anyone watch Prince Caspian? There was a lot of talk wondering how that got a PG when the violence clearly was PG-13 level. Seems to me that the WB through that one back at the MPAA's face and got a PG.
WHAT??
I'm more concerned with the mild sensuality.
Geez, that's stupid. Wonder if more people will watch it, though.
this is kind of scaring me....if its rated PG, how many of the things that should have made it PG-13 are being cut out of the film?????
Glad to see Mugglenet reads their e-mail =) I'll send more tips in the future if I can find them. On topic though, it is kind of strange that they would go for a PG-rating..
what....i am so confused....it should be PG - 13.... i guess....
Maybe the mild sensuality will make up for it if it's Hermione...
PG?? That's so random. Maybe DH will be G...lol. Anyway, does that mean Sectumsempra's out?
WHAT?! What about the Burrow attack? The bridge? The Dark Mark? The Inferi? The poisoning? The cursing? The kissing? The Quidditch?! Isn't that enough to earn it a PG-13?!?!!?
this is kinda weirdddd
I hope this doesn't mean all the PG-13 stuff is out of the movie... because the book doesn't have so much PG - 13 dtuff ... but i hope it in't a like a little kids moviee... it doesn't bother me if the inferi dark mark bridge kissing and cursing aren't out... i think DH will be R... or ... PG-13... maybee. :)
Man, I still remember the day I was shocked because GOF was announced as a PG-13, and now Half-Blood Prince, a PG????!!!! The movie has to include Sectumsempra, and obviously they aren't gonna make the death too scary. THIS SUCKS! I'm angry....
This is surprising. I remember thinking when reading the book that the inferi scene would definitely force it to be pg-13.
Uh, wtf? Seriously, I can't see how the movie could be any good and be rated PG. Let it be a lie! Or let the MPAA have gone blind! Or something...
wtf? PG? I hope they don't cut so many PG-13 worthy scenes that the movie ends up sucking.
That's ridiculous. What about the whole Ron Lavender thing going on. And all the fighting?? And well... everything!? Dumbledore dying.... just... what??? I feel like almost everything in that book would make it pg-13. that stinks if all the important stuff is taking out just so that it can be pg. This is sooo stupid.
that's weird. but i like the mild sensuality...no other harry movies have that...i hope harry and ginny sensuality? or maybe its all the ron and lavlav snogging.
Eeek. That's scary...very scary..
I refuse to believe it until WB confirms it.
really? hmmm....i don't know what to make of this? i mean.....really? This is the movie with a MAJOR death in it. True Dumbledor's death isn't that graphic but still...... and (as a lot of ppl have said) the inferi, the sectumsempra? hmmm........i guess we'll have to wait to see the movie. hmmmm.........*is confused*
Wth!! Really! this is sooo not real? C'mon at least PG-13!
Rubbish! It is so pg-13! that'a scandal
NOOO! The book so deserves to be PG-13! It has an epic battle, stuff about splitting souls, and a little child who reminds of the AntiChrist for crying out loud! This HAS to be false! Please...
some how I doubt this is true. PG seriously? We'll have to wait for the official report. If it is PG there must be a lot left out....
i agree completely-DITCH PG!!!!!!!!!
I find this rather doubtful, especially given the presence of Inferi. Hm...waiting for more confirmation first to believe this.
I don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal out of this... So what if it's rated PG (and FYI, those of you who state WB only did it for the money, are stupid because WB does not rate the movies the MPAA does.) It doesn't matter that it's rated PG...this movie is not going to be toned down AT ALL...we've already heard from the test screeners that it was a very very intense and scary movie most of the time, so I don't know what you're all freaking out about... It's not that big a deal...the movie is going to be amazing (Prince Caspian was rated PG and totally was too intense for that rating it definitely deserved PG-13...maybe the same case with HBP)...don't worry about it...just relax and have more faith.
Keep in mind, everyone, that no one "goes" for a certain rating. You make a movie, and the MPAA then rates the movie based on content. Given that previous Harry Potter movies have been PG-13, I'm sure it wasn't a deliberate choice on Warner Brother's part. Clearly, they aren't afraid of making Harry Potter movies more adult films. Futhermore, I simply doubt the validity of this news item. In the trailers alone, I've seen a lot of things that would legitimize a PG-13 rating (The burrow on fire [tense and scary scenes can require a PG-13 rating--if the MPAA believe that the amount of intensity would terrify children], Fenrir chasing about in the swamp that we briefly see Ginny in, the dark mark, and Dumbledore conjuring fire to, we can only assume, fend off the Inferi). I may be proven wrong, but I full expect in the that when Warner Brother responds they'll set us all straight. That's my prediction; I'm sticking to it.
For this one, I don't think that's a big surprise. Really, it's one of Harry's more "tame" years compared to the other books. That and 75% of HBP dealt with hormones and teenage drama alone. There are a few elements that could throw a PG-13 rating on (notably Sectumsempra) but if the studio can get a lower rating, they'll do it. And things like Sectumsempra can easily be toned down to meet that lower rating, so they'll do it. And it's not as simple as making a movie and then it getting a rating. Filmmakers can initially plan what they're going for while shooting a movie, or the studio can "plan" for them and ensure their product is certified for whatever rating they want it to get.
either they cut a bunch of stuff out or this shows that the standard for rating has changed drastically.
I do think that they made it PG just so parents won't think it's too bad for their children and it'll sell more tickets. cuz remembering the book there are quite a bit of things that i think would qualify it to be PG-13 at least. a lot of people are talking about Sectumsempra being one thing, also the Inferi being another, not to mention Dumbledore dying and the whole part with the drinking out of the bowl to get at the locket. that's certainly going to be quite frightening for children. But hopefully it's all just a fib because I'm seriously wondering about the validity of this story....
hmm... Im having a hard time picturing HBP as PG, especially since GoF and OotP were PG-13. Oh well, whatever the rating I just want to see the movie!
Rubbish!!
.....What???
Oh c'mon...PG??! what rubbish!
DON'T LISTEN TO THIS GUYS! THIS IS A LIE! MPAA HAS BEEN TRYING TO GIVE HARRY POTTER A PG RATING SINCE GOF... THEY GAVE THAT PG AT FIRST, BEFORE IT WAS RELUCTANTLY CHANGED TO PG-13, SAME WITH OOTP, EXCEPT THAT ONE WAS JUST TOO DARK AND GRIM TO BE PG. NOW THEY'RE AT IT AGAIN! I BET YOU IT'S GONNA CHANGE AGAIN... SOME PEOPLE STILL DON'T WANNA EXCEPT THE TRUTH THAT HARRY POTTER IS NO LONGER A CHILD'S PLAY MOVIE.
Grrr....What ever, at least the movies actually going to come out this time...
Can we honestly believe Voldemort as a threat if he
*Can we honestly believe Voldemort as a threat if he's been given a PG rating? It will be interesting to see if it does turn out to be PG. And what DH will be.
Oh I hope this is just a rumor. There's absolutely no way they will do justice to the movie with a PG rating! The attacks on Hogwarts and the Burrow, Dumbledore's death, Snape, Harry and Malfoy, The Horcruxes, the cave???? No way!
Oh God, I hope this isn't true!!!!! Why on earth would they make this one PG when Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix where PG-13. There are things in Half-Blood Prince that are much darker and more mature than in those two. Things like the Inferi and Dumbledore's death would be a lot harder for younger kids to get through than anything that happened in #4 and #5. One scene that definitely comes to mind would be the Sectumsempra (I know it's not spelled right) scene. Malfoy is going to be on the floor bleeding! Hopefully the MPAA gets their act together and rates this properly! They need to get it through their thick heads--after Chamber of Secrets, HARRY POTTER IS NOT A KIDS FRANCHISE!!!! THEY ARE DARK AND MATURE!
wow that little picture of draco is really hot! lol anyway....i dont really care what its rated. man, if it was rated R i would still go and see it anyway! lol
I guess Sectumsempra is extremely dulled down. Or Warner Bros. got right up in the face of the MPAA, which, well, would be despicable.
