[Confirmed] HBP receives PG rating from the MPAA
[Confirmed] HBP receives PG rating from the MPAA UPDATE: The MPAA's official site has been updated with the rating. You can see it by clicking here and searching for Harry Potter. Thanks to Steven for the tip!

Rope Of Silicon and Ain't It Cool News are both reporting that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has received a PG rating by the Motion Picture Association of America. Surprising, given that Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix both received PG-13 ratings.

The MPAA rated it PG for "scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality." We're currently checking this with Warner Brothers to make sure it's legit.

Thanks to Chris, Scott, Geoffrey, and Nizar for the tip!

wow...i haven't been this shocked since the delay. i wonder what this means for the rating of deathly hallows when it's released.

Posted by Harry949 Jan 7th 2009

guys! listen. all we can do is waiting till warner confirms it.

Posted by Spirit Jan 7th 2009

Weird.... But whatever. I was sure it would be PG-13...

Posted by phoenixknighter Jan 7th 2009

You guys should stop fooling yourselves.. HBP is NOT REALLY DARKER THAN OOTP, It IS more TRAGIC, and SENSUAL, and HUMOROUS (in a good way( than it's predecessors, maybe that's why STUPID MPAA made it PG.. Anyway, Parents will be in for a BIG suprise when their kids get terrified

This post is random and doesn't fit in here, but I'm really curious. Did anyone else get a deffective copy of The Tales of Beedle The Bard? Mine gets to page 48, then skips back and repeats pages 17 through 48, and then jumps to page 81. WTF?

Posted by sortedintoallfourhouses Jan 7th 2009

Um, sorry, but, WHAT?! This makes absolutely no sense. I had expected the latter four films to be all PG-13 after reading the books (hell, at one point I thought they might make DH rated R). Is there something wrong with them? Yes it will have violent and scary images, but on a scale five times that of GoF and OotP. This is absolutely NOT a children's movie, what is wrong with them? This has to be a mistake. (Not that it matters since I'll be able to see it no matter what the rating, but still. Supremely uncool, MPAA dudes, supremely uncool.)

Posted by G_wizzle Jan 7th 2009

some of you guys really need to calm down, the rating DOES NOT matter and trust me children nowadays know more things then they need to so they're not going to find it frightening. I don't think anything major was taken out of the movie.

Posted by rhj2816 Jan 7th 2009

Wait a minute. How could it POSSIBLY have gotten a PG rating? WHAT? Malfoy is supposed to get his chest slashed open and smash Harry's nose with his foot and there are supposed to be corpses coming out of lakes and.... the attack on the Burrow? And the end of the movie? How did Twilight get a PG-13 while this got a PG? It makes no sense. IF THEY DID THE BOOK JUSTICE, it's ok, but...... it seems like..... how could they have? .... I WILL HAVE FAITH IN WARNER BROTHERS.

Posted by xplodingsnap Jan 8th 2009

Booooo.

Posted by Moonpye Jan 8th 2009

Calm down, folks. Let's please not forget that some 7-10 year old children have read the entire series cover to cover, and there are all sorts of gory details in the books (and while we're on it....Beedle the Bard? Some pretty dark images there, too!). I'm not sure why we're harping on the fact that the movie got a PG rating. Is it because you think it's cooler to go to a PG-13 movie? Does going to a PG movie make you feel like a little kid? The fact of the matter is, most of the people watching the movies have read the books. They know what to expect. I honestly don't think there's anything to be upset about. Just go, enjoy the movie (when it FINALLY comes out), and, if you must, pretend it got a more "adult" rating to make yourself feel better.

Posted by Volde_mort Jan 8th 2009

I just hope those certain scenes that are dark in the book are still dark in the movie. That's what got me into them in the first place, so if they screw it up, it's gonna suck something awful.

Posted by jojoinpink54 Jan 8th 2009

agreed Moonpye

Posted by Erfa Jan 8th 2009

This has to be R to keep the spirit of the books, and I really thought they would at least manage a PG-13, but PG??? That is definitely not a good sign.

Posted by dracolover Jan 8th 2009

well im not going to let my 4 year old see the film, anyway she was scared when she 1st watched gof on dvd, when voldemort came back,,,so i anit going 2 worry 2much about the rating now as if ppl where scared of that bit then they not going to watch it straight away, as a true fan i go with out my kids so i can enjoy the film more.. i dont think they will cut most things out they just show it in away they can....

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jan 8th 2009

L0L @ at all overreacting fans. You're still going to watch the movie, it's still going to be a block-buster and it's still going to be a good movie. I think it's probably all the comic relief and romance that overshadowed the scary scenes. Didn't Eric say he thought it would get a pg 13 rating? And in't this just in the USA? It will probably get a PG 10 here in SA.

Posted by bluedragoongal_442 Jan 8th 2009

LinseyBindsey is right. It really doesn't matter what rating they give it I'll still go see it but the rating still SUCKS. Now all the Stupid, Deluded, Twilight (barf) fans are going to be gloating and I'll get suspended from school for punching someone when they start gloating about how much better Twilight is! (barf again) Harry Potter kicked Twilight's arse though (throw a party Hooray !!!!) If you want proof follow these instructions. 1) www.rottentomatoes.com. 2) Type Twilight into the find movie, critic, star bar. 3) Click the Twilight with the 2008 release date, wait a minute the start shouting with joy. Twilight only got a 50, so in other words it SUCKED !!! Take that Twilighter's. And what's better than that is the fact that none of the Harry Potter's got anything under a 77. (I just noticed that I've been ranting an awful lot on this website. I guess I really ought to fix that but seriously, Harry Potter is and will always be the BEST movie/book series in the whole entire past, present, feature, world !!!!)

Posted by crispyo Jan 8th 2009

eh, no big deal. i found PoA more dark than GoF and OotP. so maybe they just didn't bother with a squirt of blood? it really doesn't change the movie. and this IS a children's book, therefore a children's movie. no matter how much your little minds want to deny it, you will always find it under the children's section.

Posted by tamikharat Jan 8th 2009

i really hope this is a lie, since they just can't be planning to do the book justice if it's gonna be PG. this sucks!! Malfoy breaks harry's nose with his foot, harry basically slices malfoy with sectumsempra, dumbledore's death isn't that cuddly, dead bodies come out of lakes, there's going to be a lot of fire back there, not to mention the ongoing relationship with ronald and lavender, harry and ginny, hermione's feelings about all of this, the epic battle of hogwarts, the attack on the burrow and not to mention the end of th movie, also there's supposed to be a lot of scary/violent images and sensuality? i like that :). But the MPAA must have gone blind!!!! all that content should be like PG-13 like TOTALLY!!! At this rate, Deathly Hallows is gonna get a G!!! Really cool, MPAA, really great, just fantastic. You might have tried really digging the movie before rating it!!!! :@:@:@

Posted by LindseyBindsey Jan 8th 2009

bluedragoongal_442, I like going to rotten tomatoes too. Just read some of those Twilight reviews, lol! I didn't see the movie (and don't really want to) but I read the book and it was very mediocre. I was very disappointed. Any way.. I wouldn't worry about the rating.

Posted by Dragon_queen4ever Jan 8th 2009

I don't care if the movie is rated G or NC-17. It is still the same HBP movie. I've seen plenty of PG-13 movies that could have been PG and plenty of PG movies that should have been PG-13. Rating or no rating it si still Harry Potter

Posted by muttw007 Jan 8th 2009

WHO CARES!!1 JUST FACE IT GUYS! THE REASON WHY HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE IS PG IS BECAUSE THERE'S NO VOLDEMORT IN THIS!! JUST TOM RIDDLE..... WHEN VOLDEMORT WAS IN GOF AND OOTP, IT WAS PG-13.. SO DEATHLY HALLOWS WILL BE PG-13 NOT R! VOLDEMORT IS THE ONLY CHARACTER IN THE POTTER SERIES THAT MAKES IT INTENSE AND SCARY ENOUGH TO BE PG-13, WHETHER YOU BELIEVE OR NOT. IF IT WASN'T FOR VOLDY, HARRY POTTER WOULD BE A 10+ PG FILM ALL THEY WAY

ROLF ???? pg for this???i thought theres gonna b alot more deaths and gore == Imao pg for this and pg 13 for GOF lolx

Posted by Photobrad Jan 8th 2009

Just go watch "This Movie Is Not Yet Rated" and you'll understand how the ratings system works - in that it DOESN'T! It's totally subjective of the (anonymous) people watching the movie at the time. I wonder if the "lighthearted" romantic stuff we keep hearing about offset the heavier stuff in the minds of the reviewers, so they felt - overall - it wasn't as heavy/threatening to younger viewers?? Bottomline - there's no rhyme or reason with the MPAA Ratings Board.

Posted by coral013 Jan 8th 2009

well this kills my hopes about a cool sectumsempra scene -_-

Posted by chocolateraisins Jan 8th 2009

LOL what is mild sensuality? Certainly nothing in Harry Potter. I'm hoping this isn't true! I wanted a gory (okay, maybe bloody) battle at Hogwarts after the Cave of Zombies. Dumbledore freaking drinks evil potion and gets KILLED! And you see his body once it has fallen off the tower! And Greyback!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ! He's a cannibal!!! WHAT THE HECK?!?!?!

Posted by s_black5 Jan 8th 2009

Ok i am totally confused with this rating. I dont really have any problem with it because when GOF was rated PG-13 everyone thought it was a bad idea. I am slightly worried about the sectumsempra and the inferi now, and the battle at hogwarts, but it may all be ok as we have heard loads about prince caspian being underated. I really want to hear what the mugglecasters have to say. Eric has already seen the movie so he should be able to reassure everyone!

Hopefully they've not cut too much out or watered it down and have just decided that kids are gonna watch it whatever rating they give it. But what are all the actors gonna say instead of "Well, this ones a lot darker than the last one..."

Posted by naybethdiaz Jan 8th 2009

Not cool people, not cool!

Posted by LunyWeasel Jan 8th 2009

Yeah, I'm totally confused about this rating. Based on the book and the trailers we've already seen that show the inferi (pretty darn creepy in my opinion) and greyback (also pretty gruesome), I really don't see how this movie can be PG! It doesn't sound like it's going to be any less violent and dark than the previous movies. Disney movies get PG ratings, not Harry Potter! Especially the second to last movie! It's insulting.

Posted by phoenixknighter Jan 8th 2009

OMG you guys are acting BEYOND stupid! If there's ONE THING that WB will NOT do is water Harry Potter down for kids, you guys have to be SMOKING something... WB can cut stuff, and change scenes like they always do, but they'll NEVER dumb down a franchise like HP for kids only.. If you guys woulda READ my other posts instead of ranting nonsensically, you would UNDERSTAND whats going on. SHEESH!

Posted by grednforge Jan 8th 2009

Woah, that's lame... After all these parents were complaining that PoA was too scary for a PG rating, they decide to make HBP PG?? I don't believe it.

Posted by ginmo Jan 8th 2009

the reason why people freak out at a PG rating is because we're starting to wonder what great scenes, that would clearly be rated PG13 are being cut out. And yadda yada, yeah... the test screeners saw it. Doesn't matter. The scary thing about the movie sitting there collecting dust for many months is that they have more time to change their minds and cut out stuff. EX: Golden Compass. That movie cut out THE ENDING (which is extremely important) in the last minute. I'm not saying the HP people are that stupid to take out the ending but you get my point.

Posted by Carlikinz Jan 8th 2009

uhmmm.... only pg? ugh danggggggit! i was really hoping for pg13, twilight was even rated pg13. geez WB!

Posted by Twin_of_Ron Jan 8th 2009

OMG !!! What are they cutting out of the film now to make it a PG?!?! Already Dumbledores funeral is gone so what else ?!?!

Posted by the_patronus_seeker Jan 8th 2009

Any MuggleCast listeners would remeber Eric was told that the movie (HPB) would be rated PG-13, so I exspect that this rumor is FALSE. So people please calm down, WB wouldn't let us down too much...

Posted by G_wizzle Jan 8th 2009

Moonpye - I definitely agree with you. Twin_of_Ron - they're not cutting anything to make it PG and dumbledore's funeral is gonna be a deleted scene on the dvd, just not in the movie. Some people really need to calm down because the rating DOES NOT MATTER!!!

Posted by kalb Jan 8th 2009

PG? The plot from the book is PG-13 in its own right. I hope they didn't dumb the movie down for a stupid rating. My guess is that the report is incorrect.

Posted by tonks654 Jan 8th 2009

this is rated pg? ok wb has made some REALLY BIG mistkes so the better not screw this up and asy that its ACTUALLY reated PG13. I dont think DH will be rated R becasue of the younger viewers. maybe theyll rate it G and have ahrry and voldemort froget their differences and skip off into the sunset lol!
