[Confirmed] HBP receives PG rating from the MPAA
UPDATE: The MPAA's official site has been updated with the rating. You can see it by clicking here and searching for Harry Potter. Thanks to Steven for the tip!Rope Of Silicon and Ain't It Cool News are both reporting that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has received a PG rating by the Motion Picture Association of America. Surprising, given that Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix both received PG-13 ratings.
The MPAA rated it PG for "scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality." We're currently checking this with Warner Brothers to make sure it's legit.
Thanks to Chris, Scott, Geoffrey, and Nizar for the tip!

This is horrible! Now people won't even want to see HBP because they'll label it as being too kiddy! And I have to wonder if some of the more intense scenes got cut out...maybe the Sectumsepra scene isn't even in it (wouldn't surprise me, actually). HBP NEEDS to be the darkest movie yet...I hope that the MPAA simply had a flaw in judgment or something, or else this movie won't be the brilliant movie it could have been.
In my opinion, this is more disappointing than the delay. Making HBP PG is a real turnoff, I was expecting it to be an amazing an suspenseful movie and making it PG makes it seem like it isn't. I hope that this is some horrible mistake and some miracle can make them change their mind. I don't think OOTP (movie) was any much darker than HBP would've been and they made OOTP PG 13, so why not HBP? The trailers looked dark and thrilling and it had PG 13 written all over it when I saw it.
i agree with most and feel this is a step backwards rather than a step forwards. The themes in HBP are strong enough to earn at least a pg13 by the MPAA. I mean, Horcruxes! The idea that to make a horcrux you have to kill someone in order to reserve part of your soul...thats not childsplay in my book. Im curious to see what it gets outside of US, for example where i live OOTP recieved a M rating.
Yeah ! I at least thought after the delay we would still get a full movie ! Apparently not ...
Interesting, very interesting. I was expecting a PG13 rating. Even just going off of what we've seen in the trailers, it should have theoretically gotten a PG13 rating. Maybe their going easier on the ratings this next year? I'll reserve any real judment for when I actually see the movie. Maybe they don't consider the darker parts dark enough to get the PG13 rating. I'm still looking forward to the movie.
NOT really that big of a deal. It's going to be the same movie (thats been finished for a few months now) no matter what the rating is. Who cares about the rating as long as you get the movie.
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
G_wizzle ,hope you are right :) Why is it a PG though if they are not cutting anything ?But doesn't really matter , I'm sure it will still be brilliant , whatever happens!
i think its a lot of crap. but you've gotta remember that nudity is in some pg-13 movies now. so really giving something a pg rating is nothing.
Harry Potter fans are STUPID!
Goon one phoenixknighter !!! I see you've finally found a way to prove your intelligence. Is that something you have written on the wall of your mom's basement? Oh, sorry, I meant your "apartment".
Okay so the last two were PG13 for 'fantasy violence and frightening images'. Yet this one has 'scary images, some violence, language and mild sensuality' and it got PG? How is that even POSSIBLE?
Oh crud, I meant "good". I guess me am stoopid. However, it isn't because I read Harry Potter, it's because I keep getting my butt kicked playing D&D in phoenixknighter's mom's basement. It has addled me.
WHAT COMPLETE CRAP.
That is really surprising. I thought the rest of the movies would be PG-13.
You know, it's FUNNY how people don't reply you when you're being nice. but when you're being RUDE that's when they want to reply.... sad world we live in
Oh and for some stupid person coughs *RUSirius* information, i'm in Ohio State right now... and Oh! I happen to be a student here.
Dw about it :) Just to clarfiy , why did you say we are stupid . Not annoyed just wondering
Twin_of_Ron, I said that not to be a jerk, but because MAJORITY of Harry Potter fans i met, especially here just complain and rant about EVERYTHING HP.. "Oh the movie is gonna suck! David Yates should be fired! i hate Steve Kloves... I'm not gonna see HBP, I wish Chris Columbus/Alfonso Cuaron were back.. John Williams is better than the others... Michael Gambon sucks as Dumbledore... I hate all the comedy and Romance in the film... Harry's hair is too short... Hermione is too pretty and her hair's not messy... Draco Malfoy looks better than Tom Felton, ewww!.... HBP = PG, it's gonna suck!...it's more darker than the rest!... Narcissa Malfoy looks Ugly!.... Dobby and Kreacher are not in this one!... Why did they cut off the battle of Hogwarts!... DD's funeral is gone, i hate WB... David Yates can suck my dick!...Battle at the Burrow, that's not in the book!... The bridge scene is all wrong.... No Minister?!? Tonks is only in this with Lupin for one scene! No Rufus Scrimgeour!... Why is pathetic Cho Chang in this one...!" And it goes on and on and on and ON! It's friken' annoying! as if you guys don't eve LOVE Harry Potter.. cut WB some slack for at least giving a crap about us!

Ok :) I know you said majority but I think it is more than that , but yeah some people do go on ;) Do you like Inheritence ?
yeah i only said 1/10 of all the BS that's been coming out of the purists and HP fans.. Anyway, no i've never read Inheritance.. you mean the Eragon books? The only fantasy books i've read were Harry Potter and a little bit of Lord of the Rings.. I was never a BIG fantasy book reader in the first place, until HP came along. There was just something about it that made it better than the rest.
Same :) HP got me into fantasy. Yeah , that's its name in general . They are really good
yeah, but people said the movie was a huge dissappointment... i don't even know if they're gonna make a sequel
NO FREAKIN WAY!!!!! It's soooo totally PG-13! With a charater dieing, Sectumsempra, and the Burrow...NO!!! It has to be PG-13 like the last 2.
that sucks. i don't want to watch a pg movie. i want this to be the darkest one yet! lol :P i wanna watch violence, and the inferi HAVE TO BE scary!
i dunno, but to me, it seems that ever since david yates became director, harry potter has been going alittle bit downhill. but just a tiny bit. first, harry potter 5 was really that great. and david yates directed it. and now for half blood prince, it has a pg rating instead of pg-13. anyone see any similarities here?
So how has it gone downhill ? Yeah Phoenixknighter it was, compared to the book . There is an Eldest coming out in 2011 though
This has to be some kind of error! We should ask Eric if it could be PG!He's seen it!
how has it gone downhill? why dont u read what i wrote before. 1. harry potter 5 wasnt that great. it was the worst out of all of them so far. and now half blood prince is rated pg instead of pg-13. and david yates has directed the 5th and 6th one. get it?
this is absolutely ridiculous to me. A lot of the stuff that happens in this book and movie hopefully should be a lot more intense than GOF and OOTP. For one, theres a lot more snogging, even though thats all it is, but still, and Sectumsempra, Ron's near death experience in Slughorns office , blood when Draco steps on Harry, and oh yeah, DUMBLEDORE DYING????!!! i hope this is a rumor. half blood prince is my favorite book and it would be a same if it had a bad rep going into it/they totally screwed it up. i was thinking that these movies were getting so intense that by the time DH part 2 came around it could be close to R, seeing as these are not KIDS MOVIES. more adults and teenagers like these books than kids anyway.
Yes I do get it but HBP might be great , :) Well hoping :):)
a--we're being punk'd b-this movie sucks and the trailors are totally misleading c--wasnt this supposed 2 b sex drugs rock n roll? d--when eric saw it wasnt it supposed 2 b PG-13 e--i dont really care but i dont get it
I'm still hoping they'll change the rating, it can happen! Just because the rating is lower, doesn't mean the movie's so bad! I'm mad that it is PG though, I think it deserves PG-13.
It's a rating, who cares. Maybe they think kids are more mature now or something? ;) Buuut, this movie better be better then OotP. That movie didn't even have the HP mood in it. When I was watching it, it felt like I was watching a whole different series but with the same actors. HBP better feel like a sequel ...
WHAT are you talking about chommy ??? Everyone: the movie critics, and JK Rowling HERSELF said that Yates' OOTP was the FIRST Harry Potter movie to actually capture the REAL HP tone of the book... and to me, it's the FIRST HP movie that was ALMOST nearly BETTER than the book... that one was the HARDEST for me to read, and i only read it once.

wow this is definetly suprising news. there shold be a live mugglecast to talk about it
WARNING: This is totally of topic, if your looking for people freaking out about the rating please look elsewhere. ( I can't remember if I typed 3 or 4 responses to that....) Anyway I just really wanted to make some comments about how everyone looks. 1) Daniel/Harry is so HOT !!! ( insert creepy fangirl screech ) 2) Except for the potions scene where her hair's all poofy, Hermione's hair looks more blonde-ish, it looks good but thats not the color I first imagened. I always thought her hair would be a chestnuty tone. 3) When and where the HELL did Ron get so....so not-Ron-looking ! Seriously I look at Ron from the 1st one and the current Ron and just can't really make the connection, he's supposed to be tall, and gangly, and teenager looking not all weird and....and muscle-y ( WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS RUPERT !!! NO ONE IS ALLOWED TO BE HOTTER THAN DAN !!fangirls scream again in the backround ) 4) I expected Lavender to look different. This one looks better then what I saw, but that may be because I always saw her a blood-sucking, ho-ish, leech( shrugs.(if you don't agree thats your opinion)) 5th and final) Ginny looks really nice in this one. All shall rejoice. Ginny's finally back !!!!! ( mild fanboy shrieks for Bonnie and Emma)
I LOVE OOTP! It's my Favorite Movie, other than The Dark Knight and V for Vendetta, I've watched Order of the Phoenix SOO Much, I've lost count! God Bless David Yates.. I KNOW he'll do an AWESOME job with HBP! Team Yates/Rowling!

What I mean is, after the first movie, a mood was created which went on through the fourth movie. The fifth movie may have captured the mood of the book, but the movie took a huge turn from the last 4 movies. It didn't feel the same and it felt too different from the previous MOVIES. [I capitalized movies to tell you I'm looking at the movies themselves, and not comparing them with the book]. Some people follow the HP series by the movies and not books, and they must've felt that the 5th movie was too different from the first 4. Like, when they go into the common room and everyone's listening to rock, I was like 'Huuuh ?' because we've seen them in the common room in 4 other movies and all of a sudden they listen to rock? I thought it was too weird. The movies have a mood of their own; needless to say, watching them is different then reading the books. And, by the way, I don't make opinions based off critics. I don't watch a movie, hate it, but then read positive reviews and suddenly like it. And if you read the book only once, how could you say the movie's better, when you've probably forgotten it? The book is 766 pages, and I doubt you can remember it all. :/
This is NOT possible OMG if its only a PG then this movie must be a piece of ... ok I won't say it but you know what I mean. How can some one dying, a lake full of inferti, Sectumsempra, Quidditch, kissing in a very Won Won-Lav Lav way, an attack at the burrow, and Hagrid and Slughorn getting drunk be rated PG!?!?! Thats like telling eight year olds to be violent, kiss people, and do drugs because it's in Harry Potter, which I consider to be an adult movie. It will be just like the time pokemon gave little kids strokes, only it will be a wave of nightmeres instead. The MPAA is either mistaken, or else WB left out too many of the good parts.
I thought the other movies were M, not PG-12?
dude i have EXCELLENT memory! i can recite the whole HBP, and i only read it once, don't underestimate me ;) Anyway, the funny thing is some people who love the books MORE say that OOTP isn't true to the book which is crazy.. the best critic is always the author him/herself. JK Rowling said OOTP was her FAVORITE, and that's saying something, because to her it finally caught the tone of HP, which is grittier, grimmer, darker, not nice. And in her books, i do read her mentioning the characters listening to rock or music in the background. so David Yates was Right On! People need to quit looking at previous movies and compare it with the book. Sure not everything from the book is in the movie, that's obvious with it's 2 hour length, but the movie was great and i loved it. Yates said from the beginning he didn't want to create another blockbuster hit movie, he wanted to create something more emotional and real from the core, that's why he did what he did with OOTP.
* Oops, typo, I meant PG-13.
This sucks. But either way, I'm sure I'm going to like the movie .... but just the thought that it's rated PG. Kiddish, in my opinion. :(
it's not that big of a deal. This will attract a larger audience (including younger fans) and will make more money for WB, making HP even bigger than it was two years ago!
No offense meant phoenixknighter but could you please stop sending the same message three times. We all get it you Really like OOTP and those other two movies and you really wanted to make a point with that other message. (BTW: How may other people would rather have the Dark Mark burned into thier arms than watch Twilight ( gag, barf, heave) Honestly, Seriously, and truthfully I just saw the stupid commercial for like the Billionth time and almost puked all over the keyboard. Good god why did she even bother to write that bloody series, the end of the last one made me want to throw it all the way to Germany. J.K Rowling and Terry Goodkind ( another WONDERFUL writer, I got one of his books, WIzards First Rule a day and a half ago and its almost as addicting as the Harry Potter series. I've reread the ending like 7 times already. You all really need to check him out !) but J.K.R and Terry ought to get together and Incendio all the books Myers has ever writen! ( except for The Host. As much as it pains me to admit it ( i'll type it really fast so it doesn't hurt as much) it was actuallysortakindaalmostg ood ( falls to the floor clutching hands. I can't belive I actually just typed that.
